The King of Monsters finally has his share of Oscars glory.
In an ironic triumph of small over large, Japanese monster movie sensation Godzilla Minus One — which was made for only about $15 million — beat out four big-budget Hollywood tentpoles to win the best visual effects category. It’s the first time in decades that a non-u.S. studio film has won the category. Despite its deep influence on the history of visual effects in cinema, this year was the first time in the Godzilla franchise’s seven-decade history that it was nominated for an Oscar.
Godzilla Minus One was written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also headed up the film’s VFX team, which included Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi and Tatsuji Nojima. The team is now Japan’s first-ever winner of the best visual effects Oscar. In another rarity, a director winning the category has only occurred once before...

The team behind Godzilla Minus One brought their beloved character with them to the 2024 Oscars. The group walked the red carpet in shoes adorned with Godzilla sculptures gripping the heels, and holding figurines of the fictional monster inside the theater.
The Oscars red carpet isn’t the first place the figurines have traveled this awards season. They were first seen in a video of the group learning they earned a nomination, and later again at the Oscar nominees luncheon last month.

Toho released a new Godzilla film, titled Godzilla Minus One (read our review Here), in Japan on November 3rd, which happens to be Godzilla Day – the anniversary of the 1954 release of the original Godzilla movie. The film made its way over to the United States in December… and it became the highest grossing live-action Japanese film in North America even before a black and white version was released under the title Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color. Director Takashi Yamazaki has let it be known that he’s interested in making a sequel, and during a new interview with Empire magazine he revealed that he would like to feature some “kaiju vs. kaiju” action in the follow-up, if Toho lets him make it!
Yamazaki said, “I would certainly like to see what the sequel would look like. I know that Shikishima’s war seems over, and we’ve reached this state...

If you saw Godzilla Minus One on the big screen, chances are you’re desperate for a sequel. Takashi Yamazaki’s kaiju epic was a massive box office hit, managing to combine jaw-dropping city-smashing sequences with heartfelt character drama and resonant emotion – not bad for a 70-year-old lizard. And if you saw Minus One, you’ll also know – Spoiler Alert – that the film had a highly satisfying but bittersweet ending. On the one hand, our hero Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) was reunited with his presumed-dead lover Noriko (Minami Hamabe) after seemingly taking Godzilla down. But beyond that happy resolution looms danger – there seems to still be life in Godzilla’s fleshy remains down in the ocean depths, while Noriko now bears a mysterious dark mark on her neck. Plenty to explore, then, in a part two.

Toho’s Godzilla Minus One just made its way back into U.S. theaters over the weekend with a brand new black & white version of the Oscar-nominated movie, and along with that new release comes a major bit of news. The film has now crossed over $55 Million in total U.S. box office, making it the #3 Highest Grossing Foreign Language Film in U.S. history!!
Godzilla Minus One passed Hero ($53.7 million) and Parasite ($53.3) to claim that honor. The critically acclaimed film’s worldwide total currently stands at a massive $102.6 million.
The only international films ahead of Godzilla Minus One at the U.S. box office are:
#1 – Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon – $128.5 million (U.S.) #2 – Life Is Beautiful – $57.5 million (U.S.)
Godzilla Minus One is currently just $2.5 million shy of Life Is Beautiful‘s U.S. box office total, which would put it in the #2 spot for international films at the U.

Toho International’s Godzilla Minus One – with an Oscar nom and a $2.6 million estimated three-day gross – was no. 10 at the U.S. box office in week 9, and hit a milestone Friday. The giant radioactive reptile, on 2,001 screens, became the third highest-grossing foreign-language film Stateside passing Hero and Parasite.
Godzilla’s cume will pass an estimated $55 million this weekend.
The film by Takashi Yamazaki, starring Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe was on about 2,050 screens. The number is quadruple last week’s footprint as it prepares to exit theaters with a bang on Feb. 1. That gives it only a few days to overtake the no. 2 foreign-language film spot currently held by Life Is Beautiful. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in first place remains pretty un-catchable.

The official website for the Japan Academy Film Prize announced the 2023 winners of each category for the 47th edition on January 24. Films eligible for the prize included those released in Japan between January 1 and December 31, 2023 (which included 149 Japanese films and 221 foreign films), selected by a vote of the 3,950 Japan Academy Prize Society members. While the winners are usually announced at a press conference, the announcement was released in writing this year due to the Noto Peninsula Earthquake. The organizers announced that a portion of the proceeds from the awards ceremony will be donated as relief funds. The winners in each category, including the Best Animation of the Year, will be announced at the awards ceremony at the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa, Tokyo, on March 8. The five films selected for the Excellent Animation of the Year are listed below. One of these works will be chosen as the Best Animation of the Year.

The taxonomy of Godzilla movies has been carefully considered and deliberately arranged for many years, cordoning off various "eras" of Godzilla movies — eras named after Japanese emperors — into their own, neatly distinguishable chronologies. 1954's "Gojira" through 1975's "Terror of Mechagodzilla" constitute the Showa era, encompassing 15 films. The series was rebooted in 1984 with "Return of Godzilla," and the second era, the Heisei era, ran through "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah" in 1995. Roland Emmerich's 1998 English-language "Godzilla" is an oddity in that it exists outside of an era or a continuity. 1999 through 2004 — that is: "Godzilla 2000" through "Godzilla: Final Wars" — constitutes the Millennium era, although the continuity of one of the films in that era is questionable.
2016's "Shin Godzilla," like Emmerich's film, also exists in its own continuity. A trilogy of animated Godzilla films, also in its own universe, was released in 2017 and 2018. And, of course, the American Monsterverse series has been humming...

You will soon be able to bring home the soundtrack for one of the best movies of 2023. The folks at Waxwork Records have teamed with Sony Music and Toho to bring the "Godzilla Minus One" soundtrack to vinyl. The double LP record will arrive in April and you can pre-order a copy now. And, as per usual, the folks at Waxwork have gone all-out for the release.
The 150-gram vinyl is beautifully colored and it comes in impressive packaging that captures the film's terrifying version of Godzilla in all of his glory. The score was composed by Naoki Sato, who was inspired by the works of Japanese animated films from Studio Ghibli for the emotional moments (as well as the work of original "Godzilla" composer Akira Ifukube's score to drive home the moments of kaiju terror). Anyone who has seen the film can attest to Sato's incredible use of the original "Godzilla" theme,...

"Godzilla Minus One" is one of the best Godzilla movies of all time. At times a riff on "Jaws," it's also an homage to the 1954 original movie and technically a sequel to "Oppenheimer." Yes, the 33rd film in the franchise feels radically different and yet comfortably familiar. It uses a post-war setting to tell another story of humanity's first meeting with the King of Monsters, bringing back the original film's nuclear imagery by giving an update to Godzilla's atomic breath. This helps turn the titular kaiju into a terrifying force of nature bringing about divine punishment.
Perhaps the biggest achievement of "Godzilla Minus One" is how it does the unthinkable and makes you care about the puny humans being crushed by the giant monster. Again, the post-war setting gives the film a historical background to mine meaningful drama, with the protagonist being a failed kamikaze pilot with survivor's guilt...

As a former teaching colleague was very fond of saying: “You can’t make a pie out of sh*t”.
He was wrong and right. You can technically make all manner of things – up to and including pies – out of sh*t, but in the end, put any amount of sh*t in a pie and what you’ll end up with is a sh*t pie. Ingredients matter, is the point. Just ask Gordon Ramsay, or Minny Jackson from The Help.
The ingredients in the below movies and TV shows are the opposite of shit. They’re grade A, top drawer, high quality constituent parts… I really wish I hadn’t started this ‘shit’ thing. Does anybody else feel a bit queasy. And off pies?
Any road, we salute the actors below for being particularly excellent at their jobs this year, in some similarly excellent films and shows. Top work,...

Rotten Tomatoes and the Academy Awards don’t often go hand in hand. In fact, the Rt scores of Best Picture nominees/winners are a mixed bag. “Parasite” won Best Picture with a Rt score of 99% while “Green Book” emerged victorious with a score of just 77%. The site dishes out percentage scores to movie’s based on the film’s collection of critical reviews. The higher the score, the better the movie. Supposedly.
But, that’s not how it always work in tandem with the Oscars. For instance, “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman,” and “Roma” all scored 96% but lost Best Picture to “Green Book.” Perhaps, if the Oscars listened to Rotten Tomatoes more, things would go a little more smoothly? Probably not but, just for fun, let’s pretend that Rotten Tomatoes are in charge of this year’s Academy Awards.

Nearly 70 years since Godzilla first appeared on-screen, the king of the monsters has headlined almost 40 feature films along with a few TV shows. Initially conceived as a metaphor for nuclear weapons, the atomic dinosaur has since battled numerous monsters on-screen, something that has driven Warner Bros’ recent adaptations while they build a Monsterverse. A different approach has been taken by writer/director Takashi Yamazaki, taking the icon back to its post-war roots for an outstanding work that is among the franchise’s best.
As World War II nears its end, kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) runs from his orders by claiming that his aircraft is faulty. His arrival on Odo Island coincides with the attack of Godzilla which kills all...

Toho released a new Godzilla film, titled Godzilla Minus One (read our review Here), in Japan on November 3rd, which happens to be Godzilla Day – the anniversary of the 1954 release of the original Godzilla movie. Director Takashi Yamazaki has let it be known that he would like to make a sequel to the film, which has been a box office success both in Japan and internationally. But before we find out if Yamazaki is going to get the chance to make another Godzilla movie, it has been confirmed that he was given the opportunity to make another version of this one. A black & white version! The black & white version – which was created because the original Godzilla was made in black & white – is called Godzilla-1.0/C, which stands for Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, and it will be receiving a theatrical release in Japan on January 12th! A trailer and...

"Live and resist in a world of black and white." Toho in Japan has unveiled plans to release a special black & white version of Godzilla: Minus One in theaters in January 2024 in Japan. The studio has dubbed this new version as "Godzilla-1.0/C", meaning Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color. It's a "monochrome video version" that will be playing in theaters - only in Japan for now, but perhaps later in the US. One can hope! Post war Japan is at its lowest point when a new crisis emerges in the form of a giant monster, baptized in the horrific power of the atomic bomb. This epic action sci-fi movie stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, Kuranosuke Sasaki. This is the latest B&w release of a great action movie, following Mad Max: Fury Road and The Mist, among others. It's actually much more...

Nearing $35 million at the U.S. box office, besting the almost-$30 million it’s made internationally, it’s safe to say Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One is a monster hit. Now, following in the recent footsteps of George Miller, Bong Joon Ho, Guillermo del Toro, and more, a black-and-white version of the film titled Godzilla-1.0/C will be arriving in Japanese theaters starting January 12 and a new trailer and poster have arrived. While no U.S. release plans have been confirmed for this version, considering the success of the film here, expect news soon.
Ryan Swen said in his review of Godzilla Minus One, “For much of Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One, Toho Studios’ 33rd film in the beloved kaiju franchise, the iconic monster exists as an abstraction. After a brief, brutal rampage to start, he is kept offscreen, a shadow in the mind of our hero Kōichi...

Toho is celebrating the smash hit success of their new movie Godzilla Minus One with a “minus color” version of the movie in theaters over in Japan next month, we’ve learned!
The brand new black & white version of Godzilla Minus One will open in Japanese theaters on January 12, 2024, with no word yet on a release here in the United States.
Toho’s Godzilla Minus One, written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, sees an already devastated post-World War II Japan facing a new threat in the form of Godzilla.
Yamazaki said in a new statement tonight, “We are now able to announce Godzilla-1.0/C, which we have been working on for a long time. Rather than just making it monochrome, it is a cut by cut. Godzilla Minus One is a tremendous addition to the Toho canon, demonstrating once again that when properly leveraged franchises can be used to tell enthralling and distinct stories. Yes, it has its eponymous kaiju trampling through the city, coming up from the depths, but his tales are more than 40 stories long. Their quality varies, but despite the negative in its title, Minus One is one of the high points.
In late 1944 Koichi Shikishima pilots his Mitsubishi A6M to a badly damaged runway on Odo Island. He has returned after an unsuccessful tokubetsu kōgekitai mission. That's most often translated (and subtitled) as 'kamikaze' but that form doesn't appear in the dialogue. Koichi will return to a Tokyo that's in ruins, flattened by the fiery breath of a different monster, General Curtis LeMay.

After debuting on the big screen in 1954, Godzilla has become famous throughout all of cinema. Staring in over thirty films, the giant lizard has terrorised the world, from Tokyo to San Francisco, and now the filmmakers of Godzilla Minus One have brought the monster back to what feels like its roots, in post-World War 2 Japan. This time it may just be the best version we’ve ever had.

Director Takashi Yamazaki sets his destroyer of worlds against a postwar Japan still recovering from the effects of the A-bomb with the little people left to work out how to save themselves
There are bazillions of Godzilla films out there, both from Japan and the US and this latest contribution to the franchise is one of the very best. It’s up there with the original 1954 film, the clever reboot from a few years ago Shin Godzilla, and my personal favourite, Godzilla vs the Smog Monster, Aka Godzilla vs Hedorah (1972), which rocks because it has extras in white gogo boots, head-trip sequences and, in the English dubbed version, a kicker of a theme song called Save the Earth.
However, like the other two aforementioned great Godzilla films, this one works because it puts the trauma of history at the very centre of the story, ultimately crafting a story about human...

For a film series that has severed into various franchise strands over the past seventy years, it’s fantastic that Godzilla has finally been reborn into a form that’s both refreshing for viewers and comparable to beloved past embodiments. Despite the surface central concept/draw of “big monster smashes city”, Godzilla has famously teemed with metaphors and allegories relating to Japan’s post-Hiroshima and Nagasaki fear of nuclear weapons and atomic devastation. So, with this latest instalment being set in mid post-war Tokyo, mid 1945, makes Godzilla’s origins more pertinent to the plot and characters than most of its recent predecessors.
The story follows Koichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), a kamikaze pilot who lands on the army-occupied Odo Island to get his plane repaired, but when no mechanical faults are found, our “hero” is brandished a coward. Koichi then returns to Tokyo to discover most of his hometown obliterated by Godzilla,...

This article contains mild Oppenheimer and Godzilla Minus One spoilers.
The most terrifying sequence in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is one that never occurred—at least anywhere beyond J. Robert Oppenheimer’s own mind. Mere days after the U.S. government dropped two nuclear bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the scientist who would later be referred to as “the Father of the Atomic Bomb” stands before a cheering crowd inside a Los Alamos gymnasium. Before these giddy revelers, Oppenheimer (played as a man hollowed out by Cillian Murphy) indulges in a bit of flag waving, and a bit of gloating. He tells the victors that he bets the Japanese didn’t like being thrust into a nuclear holocaust!
The words practically choke in Oppenheimer’s mouth; even at this early juncture, where he can only guess at the sheer magnitude of death and carnage inflicted by the bombs,...

The “death game” sub-genre sees ordinary people fight for survival through murderous games, puzzles, and exercises. These heightened stories have become so popular because of their tendency to turn torture and suffering into a twisted form of entertainment — a concept that feels increasingly authentic with each passing year. There are dozens of anime that fit the murderous death game mold between Deadman Wonderland, Danganronpa, and Gantz. However, there are also a handful of series that specifically follow Takashi Miike’s As the Gods Will and Hwang Dong-hyuk’s Squid Game’s example, where childish recreational games and activities become the competitive tools of these characters’ destruction. Kaiji, Liar Game, Death Parade, Alice in Borderland, and Btooom! all follow this model to some extent. As the Gods Will predates Squid Game by six years, but there’s fascinating crossover between these two death game stories. As the Gods Will is the...

"Godzilla Minus One" is one of the best movies of the year. This is a film that takes the King of Monsters back to basics, ignoring the other kaiju in the Tohoverse and instead doing kind of a retelling of the very first "Godzilla." Except it doesn't feel like just a remake, but a return to form. Hideaki Anno gave the franchise new life with his satirical 2016 film "Shin Godzilla," which focused more on the chaotic and often wacky reactions to Godzilla invading modern-day Japan. Now, director, writer, and VFX director Takashi Yamazaki ("Lupin III: The First") takes us back in time and makes Godzilla once again a source of pure terror and a not-at-all-subtle allegory for nuclear armageddon.
Yamazaki reinvents the titular Godzilla in fascinating ways. He adds his own touch to the iconic character's nearly 70-year history by turning Godzilla's atomic breath into a devastating weapon of mass...

Toho International released the final trailer for Godzilla Minus One just as the massive creature stomps its way into theaters. The PG-13 sci-fi action thriller currently sits at 96% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics describing it as a “refreshingly humanist and nostalgic reboot” and “nothing short of magical”.
Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the film stars Ranman co-stars Ryunosuke Kamiki as Koichi Shikishima and Minami Hamabe as Noriko Oishi. Yuki Yamada plays Shiro Mizushima, Munetaka Aoki is Sosaku Tachibana, Hidetaka Yoshioka is Kenji Noda, Sakura Ando is Sumiko Ota, and Kuranosuke Sasaki is Seiji Akitsu.
“The film takes place just after the war, when Japan has no self-defense force or no armaments,” reads Toho’s synopsis. “The starting point is what happens if Godzilla comes to Japan while it is completely disarmed.”
Shot in Japan from March to June 2022, Gmo marks the first domestic Japanese Godzilla film since 2016’s Shin Godzilla.
