With SXSW currently winding down, we’ve got the trailer for a film that premiered at the fest a year ago. Aaron Rottinghaus‘ indie drama Apart looks to employ some great cinematography and an interesting concept. In our review, we called it a “well-crafted and directed debut,” but ultimately thought the “over-produced” look of it distracted. Check out the trailer below via Apple and our interview with the director and star Josh Danziger here.
Synopsis:
In his luminous directorial debut, Aaron Rottinghaus unravels a complex and intricate romantic thriller about the tragically star-crossed Noah and Emily, who are linked by a rare psychological disorder classified as Icd-10 F24, madness of two. Drawing from actual case history, this richly evocative and unsettling mystery holds a love story that will haunt you long after the final scene.
Apart is now on VOD.

South By Southwest is largely awesome as a condition of place. Austin is an amazing case study that has much going right. It is a city of filmmakers, lovers and scholars with public and private support. An organization with the most visible influence is the Austin Film Society, which sponsors filmmaker financially through the new Texas Filmmakers Fund (partly funding two strong films I saw – Where Soldiers Come From and Five Time Champion) amongst other initiatives. I think SXSW Film has grown partly because Texas filmmaking has grown. There is a large display of strong work including the festival’s Lone Star States showcase. This is as much a local festival as it a national festival (and shockingly less so an international festival, with very little work from other non-traditional Hollywood funding bodies like Europe).

Romantic thriller Apart had its world premiere at SXSW earlier this month, and will be playing in competition at the Dallas International Film Festival on April 3 and 5. I interviewed star Josh Danziger and writer/director Aaron Rottinghaus while they were in Austin to promote the movie (read my review for more details).
But before I get into my conversation with Rottinghaus, allow me to take a moment to share what actress Joey Lauren Adams had to say, when I spent a few minutes chatting with her. Adams (Chasing Amy) hired Rottinghaus as an editor on her writing/directorial debut Come Early Morning, which Austin Film Festival in 2006 after a Sundance premiere earlier that year.
"In the process of editing [Come Early Morning], we became friends and he went above in beyond in helping me with my project," Adams told me. So she returned the favor to take a small but significant role in Apart.

Arguably the best thing about SXSW is discovering "new" talent, both onscreen and off. One of the world premiere films at SXSW 2011 was Apart, the feature directorial debut of Aaron Rottinghaus. The movie starred Texas native Josh Danziger, who worked on the original story with Rottinghaus (read the Slackerwood review). Both took time out of their whirlwind week to talk with Slackerwood about their romantic thriller, the story of a young man haunted by the past and the girl he cannot remember.
Below are excerpts from my conversation with Danziger, who was in town to support the movie and to celebrate making it in his home state of Texas. We're confirming he's also going to be in Dallas for the screenings of Apart at the Dallas International Film Festival in less than a week.

I was surprised how long Apart (you can read my review Here) stuck with me, even days after seeing the film. From the look of the film to the performances to the intricate story, one thing was clear, director and co-writer, Aaron Rottinghaus, has a vision and is a talent who is just scratching the surface of what he has to show audiences.

Following the premiere of their visually striking love story, Apart, The Film Stage sat down with the film’s director/co-writer Aaron Rottinghaus and star/co-writer Josh Danziger.
How did the film come about?
Aaron Rottinghaus: Josh and I have known each other for a number of years, we worked on a small indie horror film. Josh was one of the actors in the film, I was the editor. We struck up a friendship because we were one of the few people on set that were living in La at the time. From there we started talking about things we could do together. Through that I knew I wanted to write something that was kind of a romantic drama, and Josh wanted to write a thriller. And we matched the two together when we found about induced delusional disorde), which is what our film is about.
Josh Danziger: My good friend Dr.

Problematic is any new film technology as its use becomes more pervasive, limits and controls are found as its boundaries are pushed. The advent of the Red One, allowing for filmmakers to “bake” in a look is distracting and startlingly in its artificiality while otherwise remaining grounded within the confines of the ‘real world’. This is the problem that is the major, and fetal flaw of Apart – an otherwise well-crafted and directed film by Aaron Rottinghaus, who previously worked as an editor (and continues his work here). This is a love story with horror elements and textures and it builds up a striking atmosphere that is ruined by the artificiality of the Red One, which adds digital texture and grain. Like the first digital projectors which looked artificial, the replication of reality is too slick, polished and animated. It doesn’t work within this context.

Director Aaron Rottinghaus and actor Josh Danziger’s thriller, Apart, premiered at SXSW to great reviews. The film is about two people who are linked emotionally and psychology through a shared experience and rare disorder called Icd-10 F24. The story, which Danziger came up with, is based on actual case studies of the disorder.
The film, which also stars Bruce McGill and Joey Lauren Adams, looks beautiful and for a first time director, Rottinghaus has got to be estatic with what he put on screen.
The two friends sat down with me at SXSW to talk about how they wrote the script, how the first draft came in at more than 200 pages, the casting of the film and their advice to filmmakers and actors.

Joey Lauren Adams is best known for her roles in films such as Chasing Amy and Dazed And Confused and her appearances on television in shows like The United States of Tara. In Apart, she gives us a character who represents hope in a story that seems to be surrounded by anything but that. Having previously worked with director Aaron Rottinghaus, when he began writing Apart, Rottinghaus wrote the part of Dr. Jane Sheppard with Adams in mind.

Any film that gives away a critical plot device before the first scene starts is clearly ambitious. Aaron Rottinghaus' feature film debut Apart is just that, an intricately layered romantic thriller about a young man haunted by the past he cannot remember.
Inspired by a rare psychological disorder (folie à deux or Icd-10, F.24) that occurs when two people share delusions where the only known cure is separation, Apart reveals itself slowly as Noah Green (Josh Danziger) is recovering from an unrevealed trauma. As Noah recovers, it's clear he's not aware of all that transpired before he ended up in the hospital.
Flashbacks depict a strong bond with childhood friend and would-be sweetheart Emily (Olesya Rulin), now absent from his life. Apart doesn’t so much play fast and loose with chronology, as it deliberately teases at what could have been and can never be, making it all the more poignant.

It's only the end of day three, but I'm already having to remind myself SXSW is a marathon. Noah (Josh Danziger) and Emily (Olesya Rulin) are best friends who are practically inseparable. There is hardly a decision they make or moment that goes by that they do not share with the other. When Emily is asked out on a date, she immediately goes to Noah to ask, “What do we think?” Despite this, it is clear that Noah harbors feelings for Emily beyond friendship, but it is less clear whether Emily returns those feelings. She is obviously drawn to him in a way that suggests more than friendship, but by a force that seems more powerful than simple young love.

A most unusual sort of psychological thriller, Aaron Rottinghaus' Apart takes a very rare - but very real - psychological disorder as its basis and builds out a story of tragedy and mystery from there. Here's the official synopsis:Noah Greene (Josh Danziger) awakens from a two-year coma. His memories are hazy; even as he rehabilitates himself, he remains lost in his own life. As Noah digs deeper into his half-remembered life, he is forced to confront the suspicions of those around him, as well as a pair of shattering tragedies that both bind him to and drive him away from the girl he loves.
