Hello again, and welcome to the recently resurrected Panel Discussion. I’m Kieran, and every week I’m going to go through some of the best comics of the week to give you an idea what you should pick up that you might have missed. This is another stacked week with some fantastic first issues and great jumping on points for books you might be behind on, so let’s take a look at what’s on offer.
The biggest release of the week again goes to DC Comics for Tom King, David Finch, Danny Miki and Jordie Bellaire’s Batman #25 which kicks off the massive new storyline, “The War of Jokes and Riddles”. It feels like absolutely ages since we got a great straightforward Joker story or a great straightforward Riddler story so getting both at the same time feels like an absolute treat. Not only that, but the story has already promised to bring in players from all over Gotham including Deathshot, Deathstroke and of course, Kite-Man. This is going to go down as an iconic Batman story that you’re not going to want to miss out on, so grab this issue today.
The second big release of the week is Chip Zdarksy and Adam Kubert’s Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #1 which is conveniently timed to come out just weeks before the brand new motion picture. Zdarsky proved that he had the skill to write Spider-Man in the pages of Howard The Duck and his love for the character is evident, even if he dunks on him constantly. While one of Marvel’s top-tier artists, Adam Kubert is underrated as a Spidey penciller even though his work on Astonishing Spider-Man and Wolverine was one of the best Spider-Man comics of the past decade. While he does great work here, his classic superhero style doesn’t quite gel with Zdarsky’s comedy chops but each creator has tweaked their traditional style to accommodate their collaborator in new ways, which is always the sign of a great book.
If you’ve been sleeping on Dan Abnett’s run on Aquaman this week’s Aquaman #25 is a brilliant jumping on point thanks to the arrival of Stjepan Šejić who breathes new life into the underwater world of Atlantis as a deposed Arthur Curry grows a sweet looking beard and tries to get his throne back. Šejić is an artist known for his love of DC Comics characters thanks to his prolific fan-art output and it’s a massive surprise they haven’t recruited him sooner. Abnett has been building a long-form story in the pages of Aquaman to rival his work on Guardians of the Galaxy and Legion of Super-Heroes so this is a jumping on point you absolutely don’t to miss.
Lastly, I have to shout-out Image Comics’s new release, Shirtless Bear Fighter (Shirtless Bear Fighter #1 review)by Jody Leheup, Sebastian Girner, Mike Spicer and Nil Vendrell, which is exactly what it says on the tin. It feels like a throwback to the Image Comics of ten years ago that didn’t quite have the identity it does now and was trying a bunch of new stuff that led to comics like Proof and Firebreather and if that’s the sort of thing you’re into or just if the name catches your eye, you’ll want to at least give this first issue a shot and see if it’s for you/
That’s it for me this week but there’s still a great number of awesome comics on the stands for you to check out. Happy reading everyone, and I’ll see you all next week!

No, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling did not perform their infectious La La Land songs at the 89th Academy Awards. But costar and professional singer John Legend did.
The musician stepped in for the actors and performed both “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)” and “City of Stars”, which nabbed the Best Original Song Oscar.
Legend, who previously won an Oscar for his song “Glory” from Selma, channeled Gosling’s character Sebastian, playing the keys beautifully as background dancers recreated scenes including the floating in space number.

Don't be fooled by the Nick Cannon rumors, says Amber Rose. Despite the gossip surrounding newly single Rose, who announced her divorce from rapper Wiz Khalifa last month, the only man who wins her attention right now is her 19-month-old son, Sebastian. "I'm focused on my son and my work," the model-author, 30, told People at the launch of Xxiv Karat Sparkling Wines on Thursday. "I really don't have time for a man." In fact, her most recent date was at the pumpkin patch with her toddler, who Rose says is now talking up a storm. "He's obsessed with pumpkins, so I had to take him,...

Well, this should be interesting.
As expected, Chandler Massey received his fourth and final nomination for the Outstanding Younger Actor Emmy for Days Of Our Lives. The winner of the Emmy the last two years, this is his last chance after leaving the role of Will Horton last year, under … difficult circumstances.
Sadly, and inexplicably, his castmate Freddie Smith, who was nominated last year, was snubbed of a nomination this time. Also disappointing was the exclusion of Casey Moss, who was the breakout star of the show last year, and Blake Berris, who’s brilliantly made the character of Nick one of the most loathed in recent memory, was also overlooked.
There was some good news for Dool fans. Eileen Davidson (crazy Kristin) and Arianne Zucker (Nicole) are nominated for Lead Actress, while Eric Martsolf got a nod for Supporting Actor. And the show (which won last year) is up for Best Drama again.

Supernatural‘s Destiel was your pick for Slash Madness Champion in our 2013 Ultimate Slash Madness Tourney, putting some teeth in the claim that the characters Dean and Castiel really do share a “profound bond“.
(source)
We here at TheBacklot are in awe at the level of intensity that slash fans brought to the competition this year. An astounding 9 million plus votes were cast, and there were more than 25,000+ user comments, plus countless tweets and #slashmadness Tumblr postings.
Regardless of which of the 32 competing OTPs (“One True Pairings”) you were ultimately rooting for, everyone who participated should be proud of the result. Teen Wolf‘s Sterek fans in particular should be commended for how passionately they fought in the final round. For much of it Sterek and Destel were locked in a 50/50 split, separated by just a few hundred votes.. Here’s the closing tally…

It's been more than a decade since the 1990s ended, yet the Internet can't seem to go a day without a reminder of the neon slap bracelets that may have been banned from your school.
Yes, we get it. Times are tough and there's comfort in reflection, but enough is enough.

Ah, Valentine’s Day. We’ve officially entered the season of love, romance, and overpriced chocolate. Here to help you get in the mood, your five rotating Siipping News columnists Hannah, Yvonne, Catherine, Adri and Aja have each assembled their top five most romantic (intentionally or not) slashy moments from many different fandoms. Included in this eclectic list is everything from movies to manga, so you’re sure to find a new fandom flame or rekindle an old love. Enjoy!
Hannah’s Top 5
Picking only five romantic moments was a big challenge for me considering how many TV shows, movies, comics and books I am forever in love with. But I’ve narrowed it down to these few heart-wrenching finalists.
5. Harvey/Mike (Suits 2.12): “Who did this to you?”

After a string of announcements, it looks like the Toronto International Film Festival have locked down their line-up and it’s looking like a fantastic slate. Much of the additions today come in the form of previous Cannes premieres, including Michael Haneke‘s Amour (review), Cristian Mungiu‘s Beyond the Hills (review), Abbas Kiarostami‘s Like Someone in Love (review), Bernardo Bertolucci‘s Me and You (review), Hong Sang-soo‘s In Another Country and the Venice premiere Olivier Assayas‘ Something in the Air. Most notably missing is Leos Carax‘s Holy Motors, but we do get a new Michael Winterbottom film titled Everyday. Out of the Discovery section, the biggest film seems to be The Brass Teapot, and indie drama starring Juno Temple and Michael Angarano and one can check out all the additions below.

9.22pm: Hadley – Are you kidding me? That film was lame. Lame! Butat least we get to see Spielberg make a thank you speech. Which feels so, you know, 90s. Also, I'm pleased for lovely Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, who co-wrote the script. But all that aside, that movie was seriously lame. Yes, I'm a Tintin fan, but not an obsessive one, and I went to that film full of hope and goodwill. It was all dashed. Dashed, I tell you, dashed! That is a joke that Tintin won.
9.21pm: Gong! The award for best animated feature film goes to The Adventures of Tintin.
9.14pm: Joshua – Very well deserved. When you condense a field of performances down to five, the nominees are all deserving. Good for Peter Dinklage. There's no more...

Helen Mirren in The Tempest
Photo: Miramax Films Disney just sent over their fall/holiday preview images and among them were the first looks at Russell Brand and Helen Mirren in Julie Taymor's long-awaited The Tempest, which will have its debut at the Venice Film Festival in September and then hit theaters on December 10.
Taymor's adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" offers a gender twist as Mirren as Prospera rather than Prospero as she reigns over the magical island. Shakespeare's play mixes romance with fraternal politics and the supernatural. As revised for the screen, it will center around Prospera, her daughter Miranda (Felicity Jones) and a shipwrecked crew full of Prospera's enemies.
The rest of the cast includes Russell Brand as Trinculo, Alfred Molina as Stephano, Djimon Hounsou as Caliban, Alan Cumming as Sebastian, Chris Cooper as Antonio, Ben Whishaw as Ariel and David Strathairn as Alonso.
