No Federer. No Nadal. No (defending champion) Thiem. And now no Serena. The New York-based U.S. Open starts on Monday, and Novak Djokovic is, once again, feeling underappreciated, especially as he goes for the Grand Slam. Assuming he doesn’t stub a toe, he should reach that goal, lack of applause — or added asterisks — be damned.
The truth is, the female competitors — even without Serena Williams in the competition — will, and should, be what draws the viewers. “It’s very exciting to have this many women with very different games, playing with power and touch,” said Joel Drucker, who has covered the tennis world for many years.
“I think the women have always had compelling stories and can definitely drive and sustain ratings,” adds Andrea Joyce, who has covered the Open on TV for decades. “It’s a reflection of the culture and times we live in. Coming off the Olympics,...

With the 2021 Summer Games just weeks away, the NBC Olympics team is full steam ahead.
The network announced on Thursday that veteran broadcasters Mary Carillo, Andrea Joyce and Jimmy Roberts will once again serve as NBC Olympics commentators this summer in Tokyo. The Opening Ceremony of the 2021 Games is Friday, July 23 on NBC.
Including this summer’s Tokyo Games, the trio will have worked at nearly 50 Olympics. Carillo and Roberts will serve as correspondents in Tokyo, while Joyce serves as a reporter at the gymnastics competition and handles play-by-play for rhythmic gymnastics. Carillo will also call tennis and open-water swimming.
Tokyo marks Mary Carillo’s 15th Olympic assignment. Since the 2008 Games, she has covered the people, culture and history of each host country. A two-time Peabody winner, Carillo served as a correspondent for the 2014 Sochi Olympics and was the host and interviewer for a retrospective documentary on Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding.

Figure skater Mirai Nagasu has done it again, landing the rare and incredibly difficult triple axel — this time while competing in the Winter Olympics. The feat makes her the first U.S. female figure skater to land the jump during an Olympic competition.
Completing the triple axel at the start of her free skate in the figure skating team event on Monday morning (Sunday evening stateside) already set her apart from her competitors, all before she had even left the rink: None of the other women even planned to attempt the triple axel, which requires a forward takeoff and three-and-a-half rotations in the air.

Tara Lipinski has officially found her happily ever after.
The former figure skater said ‘I do’ to Fox sports producer Todd Kapostasy Saturday evening in an ultra-romantic affair at dreamy Middleton Place in Charleston, South Carolina, after two years of dating.
Lipinski, 35, walked down a 200-foot aisle in a Reem Acra gown featuring a 20-foot tulle skirt designed by Laura Basci, and Charlotte Olympia pumps. Her bridesmaids wore floral head wreaths, while the flower girls clutched baskets made by Lipinski’s mom, Pat.

Tara Lipinski is one gorgeous bride-to-be!
The former Olympic figure skater gave People an inside look at her “homey, intimate” pre-wedding celebration with 30 close friends and family members, including “bridesman” Johnny Weir. The April 15 party at her Los Angeles pad had a romantic, pastel aesthetic and was organized by Lipinski’s mother, Patricia.
“She designed the whole thing without telling me a word!” Lipinski, 34, tells People. “I know she started planning back in October, so it was a huge surprise to see all that she did. It was everything I could have dreamed of — and more.”

It was not the normal enthusiastic Tribeca Film Festival crowd at the Bmcc Theater on Friday for the premiere of Espn’s “Mike and the Mad Dog,” a new documentary about New York Sports Talk Show hosts Mike Francesa and Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, whose Wfan sports talk radio show reigned supreme for 19 years.
When producer and Tribeca executive vice president Paula Weinstein mispronounced Francesa’s name during her introduction, the crowd erupted like she had just fumbled an easy ground ball. When Weinstein jokingly responded that she was “a story-film person,” not a sports person, the crowd got even louder, and it became clear she was alone – everyone present was a sports fan there to see the legendary duo together again after having split up in 2008.
The documentary, which will premiere on Espn in July, was an all-access look at how the daily five-and-a-half hour talk show radically changed...

New York -- "Today" co-host Matt Lauer, already in China for his daily gig, will co-anchor with Bob Costas coverage of Friday's Olympics opening ceremony.
NBC said Sunday that the coverage of the tape-delayed event will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday instead of the previously planned 8 p.m. Costas and Lauer will be joined by NBC's Andrea Joyce, Bob Neumeier, Richard Engel and Peter Alexander.
During the 2006 Games in Turin, Italy, "NBC Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams was co-host of the opening ceremonies. And in previous Olympics, former "Today" co-host Katie Couric had worked with Costas.
Not that Lauer is an Olympics rookie. He has worked six Olympics for NBC. Costas will work eight for the sports division, including seven as primetime host.
Meanwhile, NBC Universal said that it had reached deals with a number of cable companies to provide Vod, HD, broadband and other Olympics-related content. Included are Time Warner Cable, Comcast Cable, Cox Communications, Mediacom and Bright House Communications.
The Vod offerings include daily sports highlights plus some of the most interesting events, along with 225 hours on NBC HD and 379 of simulcasts of CNBC and Msbc coverage, along with other HD content.
