“The present came to a halt,” Bertrand Bonello writes in an ode to his teen daughter in his experimental feature Coma, “leaving us with the past and the future.” Much of this subtitled text refers to the specific circumstances of the film’s creation during the pandemic. Yet the French filmmaker’s follow-up, The Beast, which was developed before Coma but shot afterward, feels like a natural extension of his fascination with the scrambled perception of time in a digital era. In Bonello’s time-warping adaptation of Henry James’s 1903 novella The Beast in the Jungle, the present day is the Paris of 2044, where landscape and character have been warped by advances in artificial intelligence.
What’s evergreen, as a repeated aural motif so often reminds, is the twisted relationship of fear and love between Gabrielle (Léa Seydoux) and Louis (George MacKay). Bonello gives us a glance at two of...

At least stateside, audiences will experience Femme and The Beast, both starring George MacKay, as near-simultaneous releases. The 32-year-old British actor has been a presence for over two decades dating back to his film debut as a Lost Boy in 2003’s adaptation of Peter Pan. He grew up on screen in films like 2008’s Defiance, 2014’s Pride, and 2016’s Captain Fantastic. Twenty nineteen proved a breakthrough year for MacKay as a leading man, playing a heroic soldier on a mission in 1917 and delivering a brooding, brutal interpretation of Australian urban legend Ned Kelly in True History of the Kelly Gang.
MacKay’s latest one-two punch features elements familiar from his previous standout roles and elevates them to new heights. In Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping’s Femme, he’s electric as Preston, a hardened hypebeast in contemporary London who harbors a secret identity. The character is drawn out...

Léa Seydoux tells me “it may be nicer to have eye contact.” Though I was informed our interview would be audio-only––no complaints; time with the most exciting actor of her generation is the last time to grouse––it’s about six seconds into our Zoom call before she decides something more is necessary. Such directness will perfectly presage our conversation.
You’ll find this interview does not make great strides to cover The Beast (here’s one that does), despite Seydoux’s fascinating admission that Bertrand Bonello’s film wasn’t an easy viewing experience––her reason for which facilitated one of the more candid, no-frills conversations I’ve ever had with an actor. Fitting for someone who can embrace both knotty material and an international superstar’s career to extents that greatly exceed her Anglophone counterparts.

Every time I’ve seen The Beast there comes some point where I think Bertrand Bonello is the world’s greatest under-60 filmmaker. Not quite a new stance for me (declaring Saint Laurent the best movie of the 2010s was a lonely battle), but it’s exactly this accumulation of films through years and years of appreciation that makes his newest film’s climax so powerful, so cascading in its effects, so potent in the question of who’s even treating images and montage in service of such heady narrative frameworks and sharp-tuned performances. If I confess unique bias, having worked on Bonello’s films in the distribution realm––the theatrical and home-video release of Nocturama, the digital debut of Ingrid Caven: Music and Voice, and producing a vinyl LP of his original soundtracks––it means I’ve also seen a shift in perception, from cult figure to major figure of world cinema.

It’s too bright, the sunshine is monotonous, it’s very isolating. Those were the reasons why Chloë Sevigny, in a recent viral interview, said she will never live in Los Angeles. Anyone who’s lived there can relate to the loneliness that blankets the fragmented city, a collection of neighborhoods strung together by cars in traffic, where nobody walks or talks to each other. And why does everyone flake on plans? What are we afraid of?
That’s much like the central dilemma in Bertrand Bonello’s “The Beast,” a time-hopping sci-fi epic about the existential terrors of unrequited love, green-screen-acting, incel killers, artificial intelligence, and, oh, yes, Los Angeles. Léa Seydoux and George MacKay play reincarnated almost-lovers across time who can never make it work: first, in fin-de-siècle Paris (she’s married); then, in 2014 Los Angeles (he’s a sociopathic virgin inspired by 2014 Isla Vista shooter Elliot Rodger...

As most connoisseurs of cinema already know, the end credit roll is a relatively recent addition to the medium. The reasons for this are too lengthy to go into here, but suffice to say that films used to end very definitively and, at least for those of us raised in a world where end credits were already a thing, quite abruptly, sending audiences out of the theater with a brusqueness not unlike a train disembarking.
Ever since end credit rolls became commonplace, filmmakers have experimented with finding ways of extending the cinematic experience throughout their duration rather than treating them the way so many moviegoers tend to: as mere legally-mandated appendages to a movie. While even the most basic film includes music during the end credits so as to help keep the roll a part of the movie, some go above and beyond that, including deleted material, bloopers, or entire...

David Thion, the French producer of Justine Triet’s best picture contender “Anatomy of a Fall,” is preparing a raft of projects helmed by daring female directors including Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet (“Anais in Love”) and Emily Atef (“More Than Ever”).
Speaking to Variety ahead of the Oscars, Thion said he and Marie-Ange Luciani, who also produced “Anatomy of a Fall,” have also signed Triet for her next movie, the topic of which hasn’t been decided yet.
“Justine has devoted herself fully to the awards campaign for ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ and she hasn’t had time to decide what her next film will be, but she has a few ideas,” Thion said. He added that Triet’s next film will likely be “mainly shot in French, but could have an Anglo-Saxon actress as the lead.”

Guy Ritchie’s spinoff of his quintessential British crime drama of the same name finally comes to a finale in episode 8. I had hoped to see some resemblance in the characters in the series, but I can’t say that I am disappointed at all. One can’t deny that the characters in The Gentlemen are a treat to watch. About Theo James, I never thought of him as that significant an actor, but now I feel he might even pull off a decent James Bond. The plotline at least for a few episodes does feel like a spinoff about the everyday adventures of Eddie and Susie, yet it wraps up pretty intensely towards the end and packs a punch in The Gentlemen finale.

Was Monsieur Spade Season 1 Episode 6 the end of the story, or just the beginning of a new chapter in the life of the venerable detective?
With the superb cast, masterful writing, and one of the few times that viewers and critics connect, it's hard not to imagine everyone involved hoping this was only the first chapter of a new book about Sam Spade and his exploits in Bozouls.
Of course, it would be odd to have so much happen in the quaint town, but even during the finale, it was noted that it's not so quaint after all.
If you're not a fan of tales being tied up with exposition, you may have been disappointed in Monsieur Spade's final hour.
But if you've been enjoying the banter filling the canyons of Bozouls, then it hit the mark.
This was a highly stylized finale.

"I'm afraid of no longer feeling things..." Janus Films has revealed the full official US trailer for the indie French sci-fi romantic thriller The Beast, the latest unique creation from filmmaker Bertrand Bonello. This initially premiered at last year's Venice Film Festival in the fall, with additional festival stops at New York, London and Toronto as well. It's hard to properly describe or even try to explain this film, as it's a peculiar mix of ideas spanning multiple timelines. The plot is set partly in a near future in which A.I. is in control of everyone's lives and emotions are perceived as a threat. To get rid of them, Gabrielle must purify her DNA by going back into her past lives. There, she reunites with Louis, her great love. But she's overcome by fear, a premonition that catastrophe is on the way. The Beast stars French actor Léa Seydoux...

Bertrand Bonello’s sensual epic love story “The Beast” is finally landing stateside. The French-Italian film stars Léa Seydoux and George MacKay as two lovers who find one another across centuries, in different times, places, and lives.
“The Beast” premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival and went on to screen at last year’s NYFF. Director Bonello told IndieWire’s Ryan Lattanzio at Venice that the film was rejected from the Cannes Film Festival, saying that the festival “didn’t like it.” “The best place for a film is where the film is wanted, and now we are doing, with this film, a huge fall release, so Venice, then Toronto, New York, Busan, stuff like that, so maybe it’s what’s best for the film,” Bonello said at the time.

Opening in select cities on April 5, Crimes of the Future actress Léa Seydoux leads the cast of The Beast, and Janus Films has debuted the trailer through Vulture this morning.
The mind-bending sci-fi drama comes from French director Bertrand Bonello.
“The year is 2044: artificial intelligence controls all facets of a stoic society as humans routinely “erase” their feelings. Hoping to eliminate pain caused by their past-life romances, Gabrielle (Léa Seydoux) continually falls in love with different incarnations of Louis (George MacKay).
“Set first in Belle Époque-era Paris Louis is a British man who woos her away from a cold husband, then in early 21st Century Los Angeles, he is a disturbed American bent on delivering violent “retribution.” Will the process allow Gabrielle to fully connect with Louis in the present, or are the two doomed to repeat their previous fates?”

Probably you’ve noticed our enthusiasm over Bertrand Bonello’s The Beast, a major evolution in genre and ambition for one of the world’s greatest filmmakers. There’s Léa Seydoux’s potentially career-best work; George MacKay vaulting above just about anyone of his generation with a bilingual, multi-headed turn; Bonello’s characteristically great soundtrack; and a final, terrifying stretch leaving me to wonder how who else is pushing images and montage to this director’s extent. What’s not to like? First-viewing reservations largely melted away on a second look, and my third can’t come sooner. Ahead of its April 5 release from Janus and Sideshow, the U.S. trailer is here.

(Credit: HGTV) Working under a tight deadline, Shay is getting involved so the house can be ready before his sister’s upcoming wedding date arrives, and this is teased in the episode’s title, “Family Home Makeover Helps Tie the Knot.” In the clip, above, Shay takes in the changes being made to the house as Jenny and Dave walk him through the rooms.

We are still not much closer to the full picture of the boy and how his mere presence has created such an uproar in Bozouls, but Monsieur Spade Season 1 Episode 4 began fleshing it out in some detail.
There are many layers to this entertaining mystery, and as one is peeled away, another is revealed.
The past and present are intricately reliant, and the more we know about one, the more we'll know about the other.
The previews for Monsieur Spade had already hinted at Sam's turn at being a badass, but watching him in action, questioning his attacker with amazing physical prowess without ever leaving his chair, was a treat.
That scene spoke directly to Spade's capabilities and what makes him such a formidable enemy and detective. Even after almost losing his life in a chokehold, he's ridiculously calm and in control.
Filming scenes like that must be a hoot.

You can now mark your calendars for when you’re able to see the finest film of 2024. Bertrand Bonello’s ambitious, time-hopping Lynchian sci-fi epic The Beast has now been set for an April 5, 2024 U.S. release by Sideshow and Janus Films. Along with the announcement, they’ve unveiled a harrowing Léa Seydoux-centered teaser which also unveils the title treatment and release date––and, in perhaps a winking touch, features a line of dialogue that matches the title of the best undistributed film of last year.
Here’s the synopsis: “In the near future where artificial intelligence reigns supreme, human emotions have become a threat. To get rid of them, Gabrielle must purify her DNA by going back into her past lives. There, she reunites with Louis, her great love. These standouts include new films from perennial favorites like Hayao Miyazaki, Errol Morris, Bertrand Bonello, Yorgos Lanthimos, Kitty Green, Andrew Haigh, Bill and Turner Ross, and Alexander Payne. Rising stars aren’t in short supply either, including first and second narrative features from TIFF winner Cord Jefferson, Annie Baker, and Kristoffer Borgli. Amongst this selection, words like “gem,” “masterpiece,” and “crowd-pleaser” are thrown around with regularity, but not without real consideration.

Before she knows it, Irena is ushered away to a munitions factory where she does intensive labor all hours of the day. She's been separated from her mother and sisters and is told her only chance of survival is to assist the German war effort.

Fans of David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks: The Return” and its mystical loop through hell and horror that ends with a scream, charged by Tulpas and body-swapping and timelines that swallow each other up, might find their itch for the heartsick uncanny scratched by Bertrand Bonello’s “The Beast.”
It’s the most formally daring, willing-to-alienate of any films to premiere out of the Venice Film Festival competition so far, shape-shifting from Belle Époque Paris in 1910 to a recognizable 2014 Los Angeles, and, finally, a sterile post-pandemic future somewhere in 2044. Where to begin with Bertrand Bonello’s wonderful The Beast? It’s been so gratifying to see the initial reaction to the French filmmaker’s tenth feature, after several decades of increasingly remarkable work––the majority of it dark, beautiful, and sleazy. In fact, for what a discomforting and despairing experience much of The Beast is, when I’ve thought back to it, its moments of real, uncomplicated cinematic pleasure, its verve and sense of joyousness, are what mark my memories. It’s romantic, without a capital-r.
Rather than Romanticism, its source derives from the bleeding edge of literary modernism, or literary modernism as it sometimes arose: from stuffy-seeming upper-class drawing rooms. The Beast is the coincidental second French adaptation this calendar year of Henry James’ 1903 novella The Beast in the Jungle. It centers on two haute-bourgeoisie singletons of leisure, John Marcher and May Bartram, whose lives cross paths at...

You didn’t expect French filmmaker Bertrand Bonello to make a conventional sci-fi, did you? Good, because “The Beast” is far from it. It all starts in 2044 with beautiful actress Gabrielle (Léa Seydoux) in desperate need of a job. To get it, she’ll have to conform to the new normal in this quasi-dystopian society where the frigid efficiency of AI has deemed human emotions unproductive and downright dangerous.
The solution to this nagging little human problem is simple: to eliminate the futile intensity of emotions altogether.

Compelling evidence that every major arthouse director should be required to make their own “Cloud Atlas” before they die, Bertrand Bonello’s sweeping, romantic, and ravishingly strange “The Beast” finds the French director broadening — and in some cases challenging — the core obsessions of his previous films into a sci-fi epic about the fear of falling in love.
Split into three lightly intercut parts that trace the connection between two star-crossed souls (embodied by Léa Seydoux and George MacKay) from 1910 to 2044, Bonello’s latest and most accessible movie begins by literalizing the same basic premise that has undergirded previous work like “House of Tolerance” and “Zombi Child”: The past is always present (a dialectic explored here with the help of a machine that encourages...

The official trailer for “You” Season 4 has been released by Netflix, revealing that Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is not the only murderer with their sights set on London.
Posing as a literature professor named Jonathan Moore at a London university, Joe is surprised to find he enjoys teaching, despite being surrounded by egocentric socialites. But when members of London’s wealthy elite start dropping like flies, Joe discovers there may be another murderer in his midst.
The trailer also confirms the reprisal of Tati Gabrielle as love interest Marienne Bellamy in the new season, now sporting platinum blonde hair. In the final episode of Season 3, Marienne fled the country after discovering the truth about Joe’s heinous crimes.
“Did you break my heart, Marienne?” lead actor Penn Badgley says in an ominous voice-over during the trailer, followed by a first look at Gabrielle. “Heartbreak is always a catalyst for a new path,...

At the 2014 Cartoon Movie co-production forum in Lyon, France, I sat in on a pitch session for the strangest animated feature imaginable. This particular film, an artsy — and, fittingly, hand-drawn — indie titled “J’ai perdu mon corps” (or “I Lost My Body”), would be told from the point of view of a severed hand, separated under ambiguous circumstances, and the epic quest to reunite with its owner. I left Cartoon Movie intrigued but also feeling reasonably certain that this defiantly unconventional project would never see the light of day.
Flash forward five years, and “I Lost My Body” not only exists but screened to great acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was acquired by Netflix and won the top prize in Critics’ Week. In its finished form, director Jérémy Clapin’s peculiar undertaking is even stranger than it sounded to me half a decade earlier, and yet, there’s...

Thanks to a well-reviewed movie star, Bleecker Street took “Captain Fantastic” to a now-rare, once-common $20,000-plus limited per theater opening. With all well-oiled cylinders at work, Bleecker filled the demand for older-audience films after two failed recent attempts by others at corralling the younger market (“Swiss Army Man” and “The Neon Demon”).
Two New York-only docs, “Under the Sun” (Icarus) and Sundance opener “Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You” (Music Box) both attracted interest.
A wider Bollywood release, Salman Khan-starrer “Sultan” (Yash Raj), achieved something few specialized films have managed in recent months: a Top Ten placement despite playing at fewer than 300 theaters.
Meantime, The Orchard’s “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” expanded again to strong numbers close to last weekend’s. This word-of-mouth hit could play all summer and expand wider. There is still an audience out there: it’s just more selective.
