Out of adversity comes opportunity. That’s the view from the top of the Sundance Institute, where CEO Joana Vicente is preparing for her first in-person festival in Park City since she took the reins of its parent nonprofit organization in November 2021.
“Sundance is so unique — it really is a place of discovery,” Vicente tells Variety.
The last-minute cancellation of the in-person festival at the start of this year — due to a Covid surge — was a blow to the institute’s bottom line because so much event expense had already been incurred. And that only added to the financial hole from the 2021 gathering, which also shifted entirely online.
But the vast expansion of Sundance’s virtual and streaming capabilities has had a huge silver lining. To Vicente, who previously headed the Toronto Intl. Film Festival and New York’s Independent Filmmaker Project, it’s clear that the organization can vastly...

If Gov. Gavin Newsom is recalled next week, the entertainment industry will lose a valuable ally in Sacramento.
The industry’s top concern at the Capitol is the film and TV tax credit, which provides a 20-25% discount on eligible production spending in the state. In July, Newsom signed a two-year expansion of the program, bringing it to $420 million a year, and indicated he would support making that increase permanent.
With the exception of former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, the leading Republican candidates to replace Newsom all oppose the film incentive.
Radio host Larry Elder, who has led in the replacement polls since entering the race in July, has long been against giving tax credits to Hollywood. He sees the program as “hypocritical,” given Democrats’ support for higher corporate tax rates on other industries.
“I find it interesting that Hollywood pulls that lever for the Democratic Party, that raises taxes,...

“I’m sticking with Gavin Newsom,” said comedian George Lopez about the California recall in an Instagram video on Tuesday, “and I’m voting ‘No.'”
Lopez did not berate others who might vote “Yes.”
“You do what you do, and I’ll do what I do,” he said.

The endorsement video is less than 30 seconds, but likely coveted by the embattled governor. A CBS poll released Sunday shows the recall vote a virtual dead heat. Fifty-two percent of likely voters said Newsom should not be recalled, while 48 percent said he should be removed. That difference, however, falls within the poll’s 4-point margin of error, meaning the true result is anyone’s guess.
One thing that’s not in doubt: Newsom’s poor standing among the state’s large Latino population. The...

The American Film Institute said Friday that it has established the Thomas P. Pollock Endowed Scholarship Fund in memory of Tom Pollock, the famed Hollywood attorney, Universal Pictures chairman and producer who died last month at age 77. The scholarship, which is being supported by a who’s who of Hollywood, will be awarded annually to promising producers from underrepresented communities.
This year’s first recipients are Haley Beasley and Nagee Brown, both in the Producing track and in the class of 2022.
“Tom championed AFI and the power of great stories – and he believed in the mission of the Conservatory to inspire and educate diverse voices,” Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, said today in announcing the scholarship. “Through this endowed scholarship fund, made possible by the goodwill and admiration he created during his lifetime, his legacy will live on in the next generation of storytellers.”

At the spry age of 98, Norman Lear just made Emmy history, breaking his own record as the award’s oldest winner ever.
And when he’s not working on projects such as “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” on ABC, or a new animated version of “Good Times” for Netflix (which Variety exclusively reported earlier this week), Lear has been a longtime advocate for sustainability in Hollywood. During the second episode of Variety‘s Sustainability in Hollywood event presented by Toyota Mirai, the legend spoke with senior TV editor Michael Schneider with his wife, Lyn Lear, about how they got first got involved in the environmental movement, their involvement in politics and why climate change shouldn’t be politicized.
Lyn shared that women were at the forefront of starting the conversation on sustainability across the industry. The producer of 2014’s Un Climate Summit documentary, “What’s Possible,” Lyn brainstormed...
