Four secretaries of state are speaking out about the threats they receive regularly simply for doing their jobs, thanks in large part to election denialism perpetuated by Donald Trump and members of the Republican Party.
“Threats against elections officials in the United States of America is domestic terrorism. Terrorism is defined as a threat or violence for a political outcome. That’s what this is,” Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes said on Meet the Press. He spoke as part of a panel of four secretaries of state who appeared on the show Sunday.

Two Michigan anti-choice activist groups are working with Republican lawmakers to sue the state and block the implementation of a voter-approved constitutional amendment protecting access to abortion rights. The lawsuit, filed Wednesday and first reported by The Detroit News, speaks to the lengths the GOP is going to undermine the will of voters who remain furious over the Supreme Court’s 2022 reversal of Roe v. Wade.

Martin Luther King Jr. would be stunned by the rollback of voting rights in this country and efforts to suppress the teaching of the struggle for civil rights, according to his eldest son, Martin Luther King III.
“People ask me, what do you think your father is doing? He’s not just turning over — he’s spinning in his grave,” MLK III told Deadline in a conversation at the SXSW Conference and Festivals. He imagines his late father thinking, “’What the heck is going on? Me, my team, we opened doors that should never be closed.’ And yet we’re going, it feels backwards — at least temporarily. Which is interesting because he prophetically wrote in his last book, Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?, obviously he wanted us to revert to community, but we are seeing chaos constantly. Every day something else comes out that’s more extreme than the last thing.

On Tuesday, Kerry Washington joined Vice President Kamala Harris and Los Angeles mayoral candidate Rep. Karen Bass for a meet-and-greet at a breakfast spot on Pico Boulevard, encouraging maximum civic participation on Election Day. But just before this, the actress and activist completed a three-day, four-state trip that she has termed the “S.O.S. Tour,” where she hosted rallies and discussions, filmed TikToks and took photographs, and visited local radio outlets to raise awareness about the power of the vote.
Though Washington has been a surrogate for candidates for years, this election season she wanted to focus her efforts on showing up in battleground states for the midterm elections to raise awareness about the importance of secretary of state races (hence the “S.O.S.”) and the impact of local elections, as opposed to parachuting in every four years during the presidential voting cycle.

If Donald Trump wants to repeat his infamous phone call asking a secretary of state to “find” more votes for him in 2024, he’s going to have fewer people taking his calls, thanks to the election returns on Tuesday night.
That’s because the election was a disaster for the America First Secretary of State Coalition (Afsosc) — a slate of candidates who ran for their state’s top election-administration post while denying the 2020 election and echoing Trump’s lies about mass voter fraud. Those promises proved unpopular with voters, as...

John Oliver used the top of his HBO show on Sunday night to tear through the America First Secretary of State Coalition and its entire platform. The “Last Week Tonight” host got a particular kick out of the idea that Democrats are operating on a “satanic agenda” — or even have a plan at all.
The America First Secretary of State Coalition is a conservative coalition created to support a specific slate of candidates in secretary of state elections nationwide. That specific slate is largely made up of people who believe the 2020 election was stolen from Donald Trump.
Among them is Kristina Karamo, who is running for secretary of state in Michigan, and who has made a slew of baseless claims about Democrats and the 2020 election. During one podcast appearance, she claimed that the Democratic party “has totally been taken over by a satanic agenda.”
“Ok, obviously, Democrats don’t have a satanic agenda.

Michigan state GOP Chairman Ron Weiser took it all the way back to the 17th century when he made a remark about the assassination of Michigan’s governor, attorney general, and secretary of state — all of whom are women. Weiser called the women “witches… ready for the burning at the stake.”
“I want to make sure we have the opportunity to take out those three witches in three years from now,” Weiser said to laughter from the crowd during remarks made at the March meeting of the North Oakland Republican Club on Thursday.

Dozens of armed reality deniers gathered outside Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s home over the weekend, making “threats of violence, intimidation, and bullying” in support of the president’s false claims of election fraud.
Benson released a statement describing the “threatening” scene in front of her house.
“As my four-year-old son and I were finishing up decorating the house for Christmas on Saturday night, and he was about to sit down to watch ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas,’ dozens of armed individuals stood outside my home shouting obscenities...

President Donald Trump fired a top Homeland Security official who pushed back against false claims of voter fraud.
Chris Krebs, director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency, was among the election security officials who issued a statement last week that concluded that “There is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised.”
Trump tweeted, “The recent statement by Chris Krebs on the security of the 2020 Election was highly inaccurate, in that there were massive improprieties and fraud – including dead people voting, Poll Watchers not allowed into polling locations, ‘glitches’ in the voting machines which changed..votes from Trump to Biden, late voting, and many more. Therefore, effective immediately, Chris Krebs has been terminated as Director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.”
