Piper Laurie, who blossomed as an actress only after extricating herself from the studio system and went on to rack up three Oscar nominations, has died. She was 91.
Laurie’s manager Marion Rosenberg confirmed the news to Variety, writing, “A beautiful human being and one of the great talents of our time.”
Laurie scored her first Oscar nomination for her work opposite Paul Newman in 1961’s classic poolhall drama “The Hustler,” in which she played an alcoholic who memorably tells Newman’s character, “Look, I’ve got troubles and I think maybe you’ve got troubles. Maybe it’d be better if we just leave each other alone.”

New Delhi, Aug 11 (Ians) The new subvariant of Omicron, Eg.5.1, which is more transmissible, yet is less likely to worsen Covid infection, unlike previous variants that increased ICU admissions and also led to death, according to global scientists.
As cases rise globally, the World Health Organization (Who) on Thursday designated Eg.5.1, nicknamed Eris, as a “variant of interest”. The global health stated that the sub variant was first reported on February 17.
While Eg.5 may fuel increases in cases, the Who said it poses a low risk to public health in comparison with other omicron descendants because there is no evidence it is causing more-severe disease.
Dr Dan Barouch, director of the Center for Virology and Vaccine Research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, US, said there is no evidence that Eg.5 infections cause more severe illness than other omicron sub variants, ABC news reported.

London, June 15 (Ians) Even as the UK government attempts to prepare for new pandemics, the country’s scientists have warned about a new ‘deadly virus’ that kills nearly every second patient.
The government’s Science, Innovation and Technology Committee was informed of a “highly likely” arrival of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (Cchf) due to climate change, the Mirror reported.
According to the World Health Organisation (Who), Cchf has a mortality rate of up to 40 per cent and is difficult to prevent or treat as it spreads by ticks or animal tissue.
It is also on the Who’s list of “priority” diseases, and it’s found in eastern Europe and now France.
The scientists noted that Cchf infections may not be picked up by doctors in the NHS, as previously they hadn’t been expected, the scientists informed the Committee.

Beijing, April 25 (Ians) Scientists in China have identified strains of influenza A-H3N2 virus, circulating in dogs that might be gaining the capacity to spill over into humans.
Influenza A viruses in animal reservoirs have repeatedly crossed species barriers to infect humans. H3N2 avian influenza or bird flu viruses first transmitted to dogs around 2006 and have since formed stable lineages in the canines.
A team from the China Agricultural University analysed swabs from more than 4,000 dogs.
The findings, published in the journal eLife, showed that the H3N2 canine influenza viruses (CIVs) are able to recognise the human-cell receptors and hold the potential to replicate in humans.
“We found that, during adaptation in dogs, H3N2 CIVs became able to recognise the human-like receptor, showed gradually increased hemagglutination (Ha) acid stability and replication ability in human airway epithelial cells,” they wrote in the paper.
Further, they found that “human...

It starts with a cry of pain. Then a look of terror or ecstasy. And then the body starts to change. Hair grows from the knuckles. Maybe the eyes turn black. Sometimes fangs sprout. Before you know it, the person in front of you isn’t a person anymore. The Transformation can be the most horrific moment in a horror film because it’s where the internal becomes the external. No more false faces. No more hiding. And depending how fearsome the new being is, no more running as well.

Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxton star in The Gamechangers, a drama about the making of the Grand Theft Auto series. Any good? Not exactly...
Nb: The following contains spoilers.
How do you make an interesting film about coding a videogame? It sounds like a difficult subject to dramatise on the face of it. But ultimately, all great stories are more about the relationships between characters than what they do for a living. A movie that contained nothing but boxing matches for 100 continuous minutes would leave audiences reeling. The Rocky movies were approximately 90 percent drama to 10 percent boxing, and audiences, for the most part, flocked to see them.
BBC's The Gamechangers takes the Rocky approach to Grand Theft Auto - specifically, the making of 2004's hit sequel San Andreas, the controversy surrounding a hidden sex scene on the disc, and the legal tussle that followed. In its dramatisation of real events,...

It's fair to say that Rockstar Games - the developer behind Grand Theft Auto - isn't happy with the BBC for making The Gamechangers.

Video gaming isn't the subject of many films (and we're not talking Pixels), but considering that Grand Theft Auto V became one of the world's best-selling entertainment products ever in 2013, it was only a matter of time.
Daniel Radcliffe sports a beard that his old mate Hagrid would be proud of as Rockstar producer Sam Houser in this one-off BBC film, which follows the company's difficult encounters while developing San Andreas back in 2002.
The film makes it very clear that it is in no way authorised by Rockstar, and so one can expect a certain degree of poetic licence in this tale of a bunch of white Brits making a game steeped in black American culture.
Director Owen Harris and writer James Wood must have been influenced by The Social Network in some way or another. David Fincher's 2010 film focused on another tech genius as he created something the whole world would eventually want.

Love it or loathe it, Grand Theft Auto is a bona fide sales juggernaut in the video game industry, standing as one of the best-selling franchise of all time. Its meteoric rise to prominence has not been without controversy, though, and that’s an area BBC Two is aiming to explore with its upcoming docu-drama, The Gamechangers.

Of all the cinematic New Waves that broke over the world in the 1960s, the one in Czechoslovakia was among the most fruitful, fascinating, and radical. Bill Paxton will star opposite DanRad as lawyer Jack Thompson, who is determined to do whatever he can to stop the relentless rise of "Grand Theft Auto."
So the TV movie will follow both the mega-successful game developers and the moral campaigners who oppose the gameplay, which glamorizes violence and the criminal underworld. It should be pretty fascinating. The script was written by James Wood ("Rev, "Ambassadors"), and directed by Owen Harris ("Misfits"). No word yet on when this might air, but we'll keep an eye on it.

The Grand Theft Auto video game franchise has been targeted by BBC Films for adaptation. If that alliance strikes you as odd, then that’s because the proposed movie won’t be a direct lift from the games’ bloody vehicular antics. The film is instead set to take its cues from a real-life legal battle revolving around the moral issue of video game violence.
One man who took umbrage with Rockstar Games – the folks behind GTA – was Miami lawyer Jack Thompson, who THR reports will be played in the film by Bill Paxton. The Miami activist took offense to the games produced by Rockstar and in particular to its founders Ben and Sam Houser. The siblings stumbled upon immense success in the industry through their hyper-stylized series of games, including Max Payne and Red Dead. Shortly thereafter, their GTA franchise came under fire from Thompson who decried the titles for their glamorization of violence.

A scant few days ago, a report arrived that Daniel Radcliffe was considering playing Grand Theft Auto creator Sam Houser in a drama about the battle between the Rockstar Games president and a lawyer who fought to have the title banned as part of a drive to clean up the media. With Radcliffe now signed, Bill Paxton is in talks to play the legal eagle.BBC Films is producing this one, with director Owen Harris working from a script by James Wood that chronicles Houser’s stand-off with Miami lawyer Jack Thompson, who went on a crusade against rap and sex, then turned his attention to video games. His unorthodox actions eventually led to him being disbarred in 2008. Grand Theft Auto, meanwhile, has gone from strength to strength, becoming one of the biggest franchises in the gaming world. Currently titled Grand Theft Auto, the film represents the closest we’re...

Bill Paxton is in negotiations to star opposite Daniel Radcliffe in BBC Films' "Grand Theft Auto," the true-life account of the fight between the creator of the popular "Grand Theft Auto" video game series and a Miami lawyer who wanted to ban video game violence.
Radcliffe plays Sam Houser, the British co-founder and president of Rockstar Games which created that game along with other franchises like "Max Payne" and "Red Dead Redemption".
Paxton will play activist attorney Jack Thompson who made his name blasting media companies for pushing rap and sex onto the airwaves before turning his attention to video games. He frequently targeted Houser and was ultimately disbarred in 2008 for inappropriate behavior.
Owen Harris ("Black Mirror," "Misfits") will helm the project from a script by James Wood that is based on David Kushner's book "Jacked". Shooting begins next week.

To his credit, Daniel Radcliffe has worked hard to re-establish himself post-Harry Potter, solely based on his acting chops and not by crude antics or shock performances. However, the British actor will soon play Sam Houser, a man who popularized himself by letting others engage in lewd acts and once-shocking behavior galore... in the video game world that is. Houser is the co-founder and president of Rockstar Games, and the film is named after the company's most popular title, Grand Theft Auto. The BBC biopic doesn't center on Houser's life specifically, but more on his real-life legal battle with Jack Thompson, a Miami attorney and activist who attempted to ban violence in video games. The latter's role has yet to be cast. amz asin="0470936371" size="small"At the helm of this true-life story is Owen Harris, a television director behind episodes of "Misfits" and "Black Mirror." Fresh from Victor Frankenstein and the sequel to Now You See Me, Daniel Radcliffe is now eyeing the BBC's developing Grand Theft Auto drama. The film, based on David Kushner's book Jacked: The Outlaw Story Of Grand Theft Auto, has Owen Harris directing from a screenplay by James Wood. This is, as you'll have gathered, a film about the infamous videogame franchise rather than one based on it (we were told in 2013 that a "straight" GTA movie will never happen). Radcliffe is in the frame for the role of Rockstar Games honcho Sam Hauser, who steered the games from their simple top-down origins to the massively complex - and violent - open world system we now know. The film (and the book it's based on) deals with the British Hauser's clashes with the Floridian self-styled moral activist Jack Thompson: an attorney who had already gone after other media...

Each month, Boris Kachka will offer nonfiction and fiction book recommendations, and you should read as many of them as possible. Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, by Elena Ferrante (Europa, September 2) Having taken on a pseudonym that inspires Pynchon-level conspiracy theories, the Italian novelist — whoever she (he?) is — may not want fame, but she deserves it. This third installment in her Neapolitan series, which tracks two friends on divergent paths — urbane writer Elena and self-taught dropout Lila — finds them navigating the age of motherhood and activism. (It’s the '70s, and Italy seems to be breaking apart.) Start with the first book, My Brilliant Friend, and you’ll be caught up before the fourth and final installment makes its way into English. The poet Ben Lerner’s first novel, Leaving the Atocha Station, about a neurotically selfish American poet in Spain, was one of 2011’s smartest sideways social critiques — and perhaps its unlikeliest critical hit (James Wood called it “subtle, sinuous, and very funny”). The more mature (and still neurotic) protagonist of his new novel, 10:04 (out September 2), is a Brooklyn author considering fatherhood and his own mortality. Lerner describes this episodic meditation on the New York life — within the book itself — as “neither fiction nor nonfiction, but a flickering between them.”Why did you make 10:04 so self-consciously semi-fictional, and how semi-fictional is it? From the beginning, this was a book about how fictions become facts and vice-versa. I do consider this a work of fiction — plenty of events and characters are made up — but it does occupy that flickering edge. How about a few specific facts:...

David Mitchell and Robert Webb's BBC Two comedy Ambassadors will not be back for a second series in its current format - but could return as a drama.
According to Radio Times, production company Big Talk are believed to be in discussions with the BBC about reformatting the show.
Ambassadors was written by Rupert Walter and James Wood, who also wrote BBC Two sitcom Rev.
The show, which aired in October on BBC Two, contained strong dramatic elements.
David Mitchell told Digital Spy last year, that Ambassadors was actually "very much on the drama side".
"I think the key distinction between a sitcom and a comedy-drama is that in a sitcom people are bad at their jobs, but in a comedy drama, they can be good at them," he explained.
"It's about some diplomats - I play an ambassador and Robert plays a deputy ambassador in a fictional -stan in South Asia.

As fans of the Disney franchise, we spend a lot of time talking about the princes and princesses. The internet is filled with articles talking about the feminist implications of Disney princesses and the complete lack of personality frequently shown by their male counterparts. And while that’s all well and good, we never seem to talk about the good old Disney sidekicks (sorry, hero support). True to form, these lovable BFFs remain shunted off to the side, doomed to spend their existence living in the shadow.
But it’s a shame, because a lot of times these side characters are the best part of the movie. Really, in terms of audience enjoyment, the hierarchy goes: sidekick, villain (depending on the film and whether or not James Wood happens to be voicing him, in which case the villain catapults in awesomeness), plucky female lead, boring tenor prince.

The director on death, predicting the future and Scorsese's fear of him
Hi, David! You're here to talk about Evolution, a touring exhibition of props from your films (1). Do you purposefully try to make the objects in your films iconic?
No. You work from the inside out. If something is projected on them afterwards, it's kind of gravy.
What's it like to see your ideas become reality? The iPod seems like a very Cronenbergian concept …
A lot of the science fiction writers of my youth – such as Arthur C Clarke – were very proud of predicting the future(2). But that was never really part of the excitement for me. I never thought of myself as a prophet.
Everybody has antennae. Some people mute them. If you're an artist, you enhance them. If your antennae are sensitive enough, you pick up some things that are an anticipation of the future whether you want to or not.

Chicago – The revolution in technology, that has allowed the world to change completely in just two generations, was led in part by dreamers in a garage. One of those “Edisons” was Steve Jobs – the creator of Apple Computers – portrayed with an inventor’s instinct by Ashton Kutcher.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Kutcher, and the approach that director Joshua Michael Stern and writer Matt Whiteley took with the character of Steve Jobs, are the highlights of the film. There is great respect toward the passion in the dreamers and innovations, and that type of creativity that changes our way of doing and thinking. Where the film doesn’t score points is within the “inside baseball” elements of the Apple Computer corporation. There is too much time given to boardrooms, marketing managers and staffing decisions, and while this is intriguing, it isn’t as interesting as the reflective vision that Steve Jobs gave his products.

Chicago – The new film about the founder of Apple Computers, “Jobs,” is a tour de force for Ashton Kutcher, in his portrayal of Steve Jobs. Opposite to him is familiar character actor Josh Gad, as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Creating the ethereal atmosphere in the film is director Joshua Michael Stern.
Josh Gad and Joshua Michael Stern were recently in Chicago on a promotional tour for their new film, and provided insight to capturing the essence of what made those two “Steves” tick. Josh Gad has been a journeyman actor, cast in five TV series over the years (like “1600 Penn”), character film parts (“The Internship”) and in his most high profile, originating the character of Elder Arnold Cunningham on opening night of the Broadway smash “The Book of Mormon.” Joshua Michael Stern made his directorial debut with “Neverwas” (2005), and followed that up with “Swing Vote” (2008).

In addition to General Secretary-Treasurer James Wood, the slate includes 13 International Vice Presidents, three trustees, and the delegate to the Canadian Labor Congress.
