It’s a Hollywood cliche you have to hire the nicest actors to play the meanest people, and on “Under the Bridge” a group of struggling, lonely teens committing violent crimes certainly qualifies.
Unlike other shows about teens, where the cast is pushing 30, the kids on Hulu’s miniseries all are played by actors aged 12 to 16. This created a few challenges during production, due to the dark true-life plot, which centers on small-town British Columbia and the kids who assault and kill their classmate Reena Virk one night, and then basically all cover for each other while the case unfolds.
We wanted to “[give] them permission to explore the cruelty of their characters,” creator Quinn Shephard said to IndieWire. Lily Gladstone is getting sent down “Under the Bridge” to see about this murder.
Gladstone is following up her Academy Award-nominated breakout performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon” with “Under the Bridge,” a Hulu limited series premiering April 17. Hulu released a trailer for the gloomy true crime drama on Monday.
The trailer, with its eerie score, dark dialogue about missing and murdered young women, and focus on an uneasy partnership between two investigators, feels like it could be part of the “True Detective” universe. Gladstone plays a local cop haunted by the unsolved murder of a teenage girl, and Riley Keough (who also serves as executive producer) plays a journalist writing a book on the case.
Here’s the official synopsis from Hulu: “‘Under the Bridge’ is based on acclaimed author Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the 1997 true story of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta) who went to join...

Disney+’s new lengthy trailer for Star Wars: Ahsoka provides our first look at a live-action Thrawn. Lars Mikkelsen provided the character’s voice in the animated Star War Rebels series and reprises his role in the latest addition to the Star Wars franchise.
In an interview with EW, Mikkelsen offered a short description of Thrawn.
“He’s a top strategist,” said Mikkelsen. “He’s always seven paces ahead of anybody else. And ruthless, of course. But only when it’s needed, actually. I think he thrives also with the creativity of the surroundings. I mean, he’s not using people in a bad way. He’s using their creativity to reach his goals.”
Rosario Dawson leads the cast in the titular role. The series also stars Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll, and Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati.

The latest trailer for Disney+’s Star Wars series Ahsoka ups the action.
The two-minute clip released Tuesday showcases Rosario Dawson as the titular Jedi while also expanding the focus from an earlier teaser to include both more battle scenes and a longer look at Dawson’s co-stars, who include Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, the late Ray Stevenson as Jedi-turned-mercenary Baylan Skoll, Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati, Diana Lee Inosanto as Morgan Elsbeth, David Tennant as Huyang, Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn and Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger.
Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano, who made her debut in season two of The Mandalorian, states early in the trailer that she’s looking to stop Thrawn from becoming “heir to the Empire.” Winstead’s character convinces Ahsoka to find Sabine and enlist her in the coming fight.

“House of the Dragon” has made a name for itself not only as HBO’s wildly popular “Game of Thrones” prequel, but also as a show with a large following that loves to dissect its use of the female gaze, its portrayal of a deeply intimate friendship between young women and that relationship’s subsequent dissolution, and its intense appeal to fans of the romance genre.

Flexibility and adaptability are the names of the game for filmmakers who want to keep their head above water -- especially while shooting a series as sprawling and epic as "House of the Dragon." As much as the very highly-viewed season 1 relied on the strength of its scripts, certain aspects couldn't always be translated perfectly from the page. Whether because of logistical difficulties or bursts of inspiration in the intervening time or something else altogether, reality always has a way of laughing at the plans we make.
Take one scene starring Emma D'Arcy's Rhaenyra in episode 8, "The Lord of the Tides." Memorable for closing with the death of King Viserys (Paddy Considine) and lighting the spark for the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, a much quieter and more unassuming moment earlier in the episode stands out as a prime example of the chaos inherent in a television production.

Now that all we have left of "House of the Dragon" is the long wait between now and season 2, let's talk about what was perhaps episode 8's most necessary moment: King Viserys' (Paddy Considine) final walk to the Iron Throne. The scene comes amidst more challenges to the current line of succession — which the king himself further complicates by episode's end. Due to Viserys' rapidly declining health, the king had been spending much of his time in a milk-of-the-poppy-induced haze, no longer exactly fit to rule. However, he forces himself to make a grueling walk to sit on the Iron Throne for what winds up being the last time. He may be shuffling off this mortal coil, but the king is there for his daughter when it counts.
One of the most striking aspects of the scene is how long it takes for Viserys to actually reach the throne. Some...

The world of Westeros is a bit like the world of "Succession." You can pick a favorite character based on their charm or wit or general kicked-puppy look, but the chances are, anyone you end up loving is still going to commit atrocious human rights violations at some point or another. It's a part of the game of thrones: like Cersei Lannister once said, you win or you die. And to win, the characters in "House of the Dragon" resort to some pretty terrible things.
That includes the insidious actions of Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), who has spent much of the series making decisions either to appease her father or her now-dead husband. While many of Alicent's more questionable moves are forgivable, like marrying her bestie's dad because the patriarchy needs her to, others, like nearly gouging a kid's eye out, are a little less understandable. But few moments in...

Ryan Condal, the showrunner of the streaming show, “House of the Dragon”, has shared that Aegon II is an unlikely and unwilling king. The narrative course of the show sees Aegon II’s (played by Tom Glynn-Carney), ascension to King of Westeros. Speaking about Aegon II’s bid for King, Ryan said: “I think that’s the big mystery of this episode, which is– who is Aegon, really? Who is this man we’re about to make king?”
Going further, Condal elaborated on the character’s relationship to the throne and King Viserys.
He said: “Aegon is an unlikely and unwilling king. He doesn’t think his father ever really loved him enough or respected him enough to think that he was worthy of the job and much like Daemon, Aegon just wanted to know that Viserys loved him and thought him worthy. There’s a new king in Westeros: House of the Dragon’s ninth episode saw the coronation of Aegon II Targaryen, the reprehensible eldest son of Alicent Hightower and the late Viserys Targaryen. As played with punchable petulance by actor Tom Glynn-Carney (Dunkirk), the character is seemingly a perfect storm of un-kingly qualities: Aegon is a selfish addict and rapist with zero interest in leading the Seven Kingdoms.
It’s a character that’s reminding some Dragon fans of another villainous despot: Game of Thrones’ Joffrey Baratheon. The comparison actually came up behind the scenes, too. Shortly after Glynn-Carney was cast in the role, the actor discussed Joffrey (not to be confused with the other young Joffrey in Dragon) with showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik.

Let’s be crystal clear about something right up front. Paddy Considine shattered our collective hearts as the ailing King Viserys Targaryen in HBO’s epic fantasy drama “House of the Dragon.” After delivering a beautifully rendered portrait of a wise and stoic ruler throughout the season, he went out in a blaze of glory by delivering a devastating swan-song performance in “Lord of the Tides,” the eighth episode of the series, as a monarch in his twilight, withering away in agonizing pain, leaving a legacy of rivalry and blood-lust in a battle to the death over the coveted iron throne.
Social media was ablaze with tributes and hosannas after the episode aired, with fans and critics declaring that the acclaimed English actor gave the performance of his career. Whenever a popular book series gets a television or film adaptation, certain debates are bound to occur. There will be those who loved the books and believe that anything the adaptation changes from the original texts is awful blasphemy. There will be those who believe that the on-screen version thoroughly improved upon the source material. These debates between book purists and show watchers are often strident and unending.
When "Game of Thrones" was airing, these debates occurred just as they always do. But by the time the show's lackluster later seasons had aired, it seemed that the book defenders had more or less won the debate. In the show's early seasons, when they followed the plot of the book more precisely, the show was extremely well-written and near-universally beloved. As the show began to stray more from the source material, the quality cratered. When it wasn't able to ape directly...

*Warning – spoilers ahead for House of the Dragon, episode eight.
House of the Dragon’s eighth episode provided perhaps the most poignant moment of the series so far.
As a sickly, aged Viserys (Paddy Considine) slowly makes his way up to the Iron Throne, his crown drops off his head onto the floor. As he bends to pick it up, his brother Daemon (played by Matt Smith) picks it up and places it on his head as he sits on the throne.
It’s an emotionally charged moment between the brothers who have had their differences throughout the series – and it turns out it happened completely by accident.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the episode’s director Geeta Patel revealed that the crown was never supposed to fall off Considine’s head.

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "House of the Dragon."
Paddy Considine put in a great performance in last night's "House of the Dragon," bidding the sickly King Viserys goodbye with an episode that was all about the character's painful yet dignified final days. In a world known for double-crossing and bloodshed, it was interesting to see Viserys go out in a non-violent but still excruciating way. Even more interesting? The definitive choices the king made in his last hours, bucking his long-standing reputation as an indecisive ruler. Most memorably, he took to the Iron Throne one last time to settle a dispute about the future of Driftmark.
Only, it wasn't easy for Viserys to get there. The king's progressive illness has hindered him more and more with each episode, and by "The Lord of the Tides," he's not nearly as mobile as he once was. After his full titles are announced,...

“House of the Dragon” is no stranger to drama, but it’s taking things to a whole new level as Season 1 draws to a close.
With episodes that have so far included a fatal beating at a wedding and a child knife fight, Episode 8, “The Lord of the Tides,” provides some good-old fashioned pettiness — perhaps something to look on fondly in the weeks and years to come.
After the unexpected decapitation of Vaemond Velaryon (Wil Johnson), King Viserys (Paddy Considine) insists on hosting a family dinner for his ill-behaved lineage. The king can no longer pretend that everyone in the room likes each other, but he hopes that this one meal (his last) can do what no other did and unite them — that if nothing else, the sight of their patriarch clearly on his last legs will inspire some loyalty, humility, and love.
But Viserys’ last supper is unique enough...

[Warning: This story contains spoilers for House of the Dragon, episode eight.]
From the opening scenes of House of the Dragon, viewers knew King Viserys’ days were numbered. Plagued by a form of leprosy, the king wasted away, week after week, losing body parts and manifesting grotesque boils, and all the while discontent in his court festered over his choice of heir (his daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen). In episode eight, Viserys became a Gothic spectral figure of death, with half his face hid by bandages or a gold mask, as he desperately tried to convince his feuding family to set aside their differences and prevent a civil war.
Actor Paddy Considine (Peaky Blinders) gave a heartbreaking performance of a man giving every last ounce of energy to stopping a Targaryen doomsday, only to utterly fail. It’s a portrayal that also seems likely to generate Emmy buzz.

Warning: contains spoilers for House of the Dragon episode 7 ‘Driftmark’.
House of the Dragon episode seven left Rhaenys and Corlys Velaryon without a son, Prince Aemond without an eye, and Rhaenyra and Alicent’s respective court factions the Blacks and the Greens without any doubt that they were at war – the “ugly game” for control of the Seven Kingdoms had begun. Despite King Viserys I’s weak pleas for togetherness, the blood of his family runs far too hot for forgiveness. Their enmity is now in the open, and as Rhaenyra and Daemon travel to King’s Landing from Dragonstone in next episode, ‘The Lord of the Tides’, that only promises to deepen.
Watch the teaser trailer below:
Here’s what fans can expect from House of the Dragon episode eight, directed by Geeta Vasant Patel and written by House of the Dragon producer and Light as a Feather screenwriter Eileen Shim.

Actress Emma D’Arcy is set to debut as the adult princess Rhanyera in the sixth episode of ‘House of the Dragon’. She recently spoke about how she did her own stunts and enjoyed the process in the series.
Elaborating on the same, she said, “I did a bit of stunt work, and at first, I was sort of cocky about it because I like a challenge.”
The preparations for the show unfolded right in the thick of the pandemic when everything was shut down including the gyms. Hence, these stunts came across as a shock to her system, “And then we went in to work with the team – and this was right in the middle of the pandemic, and needless to say, the gym hadn’t been open – it was a shock to the system.”

Many "Game of Thrones" fans felt burned by the HBO series' final season, leaving some to wonder if there's even still an audience for "Game of Thrones" spin-offs. Seven hells, I wondered if "House of the Dragon" was something even I wanted, despite being a die-hard fan of George R. R. Martin's books and the incredible world of Westeros. The series had two things going for it: one, it's based upon "Fire & Blood," a single novel that tells a complete saga; and two, it takes place during the reign of the Targaryens, which means dragons. Lots of dragons. Who doesn't love dragons?
"House of the Dragon" starts a bit shakily and has moments where it falters, but the series has more on its mind than just gratuitous sex scenes and graphic violence. There's still plenty of nudity and gore, but it's often in the service of the story, and...

As the upcoming series “House of the Dragon” approaches its release date, its showrunners Ryan J Condal and Miguel Sapochnik reveal that it is a “complex Shakespearean family drama.”
The series is a gripping saga that takes the audience deep into the extraordinary world of Westeros and explores the Targaryen family – the all-powerful dragon riders who are the seemingly invincible rulers of the seven kingdoms.
Even though the series is a prequel to “Game of Thrones”, “House of the Dragon” has an entirely new story with new characters played by an impressive cast.
Chalking out the line of difference between the two shows, Ryan said in a statement that “Game of Thrones” was about multiple families going to war over justice and decency.

Will fan disappointment over the final season of “Game of Thrones” subsided enough by 2022 that the world will be ready to return to Westeros? HBO is banking on that outcome. The cable network has a “Game of Thrones” prequel series called “House of the Dragon” in production now.
“House of the Dragon” will expand the world of the megahit fantasy series, telling a story about the golden-haired, dragon-riding royals of House Targaryen – the family that produced Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) – centuries before the events of “Game of Thrones.” It’s based on “Fire & Blood,” a novel by George R.R. Martin that was written as a companion to his “A Song of Ice and Fire” series. The first season will be 10 episodes long. It’s the first project to make it to series out of a number of “Game of Thrones” spin-offs HBO has in development.

“I know that I have been a victim of my own imposter syndrome, and I feel like that is something that needs to be overcome,” said “Grace and Frankie” creator Marta Kauffman, whose credits also includes co-creating the hit sitcom “Friends.” “Even though we feel like we are not ‘as good as’ or ‘as much as,’ you know, we have all these passions, these these things we want to do. But there’s this — I certainly feel — imposter syndrome.”
The other panelists — “Pose” executive producer and director Janet Mock, “The Undoing” director Susanne Bier and “The Great...
