Most people would think that auditioning for an MTV reality show would be somewhat glamorous, but one person recently revealed that their time auditioning for the turn-of-the-century fever dream Say What? Karaoke was anything but.

Say What? Karaoke premiered on MTV in 1998. It was a spinoff of the popular reality show Say What?, where music videos for songs with fast or hard-to-understand lyrics were shown with the lyrics shown on the bottom of the screen.
Regular people, typically college students, would sing karaoke and then receive critiques from the judges. Celebrities like Shia Labeouf and Ashlee Simpson appeared as guest judges, and Say What? Karaoke was hosted by a series of stars like Boy Meets World actor Danielle Fishel, Dave Holmes, and singer Joey McIntyre.

Lady Gaga is going to be the host and musical guest on tonight’s Saturday Night Live and we went behind-the-scenes and spoke to castmember Bobby Moynihan about what we can possibly expect from the unpredictable pop star. “She’s a pro!” Moynihan gushed to Jim Shearer. He explained that she’s been acing the read-throughs. ”She’s not as crazy as everyone…as she makes herself seem to be.” Moynihan might have nothing but professional respect and praise for Lady Gaga, but what would his famous character, Drunk Uncle, say about her? “I think he would just stare and be confused,” Moynihan laughed before launching into the character. “Uh, you know, when I was a kid, people, people were just wore regular clothes and t-shirts and they didn’t walk around in helicopter dresses.” Will Drunk Uncle face off with Lady Gaga tonight? We’ll have to tune in tonight to find out.

In case you didn’t realize, VH1 Classic has declared today, 11/11/11, National Metal Day. We’re sure we’re not the only ones to blast Mastodon in our headphones while everyone assumes we’re typing away to the sweet sounds of Britney Spears. Not every metalhead wears leather pants, T-shirts and a scowl, right? Over the years, several surprising celebs have come out of the closet as fans of the hard stuff — and not just when those Iron Maiden shirts were really popular at Hot Topic.
Years ago, MTV discovered that Demi Lovato was a serious fan of black metallers Dimmu Borgir among other groups we’re sure never appeared on Radio Disney. Kat Dennings likes to tweet about knitting while listening to metal. This 10-minute video of a tipsy Kelly Clarkson rocking out onstage at a Metal Skool show in 2006 is truly endearing. And only one celeb has actually toured with Ozzfest — Ms.

On Wednesday (June 8), Nick Jonas showed up on my turf here at the MTV News offices to shed some light on his latest venture, working with Quaker Chewy Superstar Search to find the next big thing. While here, he also chatted with VH1's Jim Shearer during a live stream Q&A session before performing three tracks off his 2010 solo album.
The acoustic set really showed another side of Nick. He was lighthearted, cracked some jokes and charmed the room with his soulful, acoustic pop. A true testament to his musicianship and star power, he managed to turn some non-believers (we know you're out there!) into fans.
What did he dazzle them with? "Rose Garden," a sad track about how hard life can be; "Who I Am," a midtempo tune on which Nick confesses his need to find love; and "Last Time Around," a funky track about remembering a certain love in your life.

It’s not every day that I receive the following call: “Hey Michelle, want to go to Cancun on a party plane with the Goo Goo Dolls and VH1 Top 20?” After a couple of clicks on my trusty “Common Sense Abacus,” my calculations said “Duh.” Which is how I found myself at a very festive Lax terminal for Virgin America’s inaugural flight to Cancun, Mexico. Oh, look, a totally unposed photo! Yes, I wore my finest Three’s Company kimono-sleeved top for the occasion. The terminal was bustling. VH1 Top 20 was in the midst of filming (the episode premieres this Saturday at 9 Am Est – watch it), and everyone was uh-super jazzed. Mainly because they were handing out free chorizo by the gate. But seeing as it was 9 am, I was in the mood for something less “sausage party-ish.” And I found my answer, in the form of the Terminator 5 Of Pancake Contraptions: Self.

"The Grid" is IFC's new series about what's next in movies, gadgets, viral videos, games, and more. Each Thursday, IFC News dives into our archives to bring you more on this week's cool stuff. Here's what going on this week in "The Grid":
-Alonso Duralde told you about "I'm Not There," the new (maybe) documentary about actor Joaquin Phoenix, and other films that blur the line between reality and fantasy. Back in 2008, The IFC News Podcast 'rapped' up Phoenix's career in a retrospective podcast, and this week Matt Singer examined some theories about the nature of the film. We've also got a podcast all about movies that play at the blurry line between fiction and non-fiction like Andy Kaufman's "I'm From Hollywood." We called 'em "docsploitation."
-Kathryn Lyn talked to one of the creators of "Fallout: New Vegas." You can read more on the game's voice...

Apropos of nothing in particular, here's Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich talking with IFC's music blogger Jim Shearer about indie film, of which he's a huge fan, his friendship with Thomas Vinterberg and why there's still hope for low-budget cinema. For the record, he's thinks "Man on Wire" is "one of the best documentaries I've seen in years," he borrows Academy screeners from friends, he's seen "Control" four times and he believes that '07 was the best year for independent film.
