Of all of Hollywood’s attempts to cash in on the video game craze of the 1980s, The Last Starfighter trails only Tron as the decade’s most fondly nostalgized entry in the video game movie’s micro boom. Like Tron, Nick Castle’s film is a demonstration of then-new CGI technology, which means that inevitably its heavy reliance on wireframe animations and blocky, thickly pixelated objects has very much aged, though the fact that its visual effects are tethered to the game technology of the day further highlights it as a relic of its era. Perhaps the one area in which it’s ahead of its time is in its conceit of an arcade game being used as a military recruiting tool.
At the center of The Last Starfighter is a teenager named Alex Rogan (Lance Guest), who lives in a trailer park at the dusty outskirts of his hometown.

In 1985, a lot of movie-going youngsters dreamed of traveling back in time, finding a bicycle in the basement of the Alamo, or using a mysterious map to discover pirate treasure.
In Kansas City, one kid left the theater with a feeling he’d someday own a house in “the Goondocks.” Then, in December 2022, that now-grown-up Goonies super-fan paid $1.7 million for the cinematic Walsh house. Why? He says The Goonies movie shaped his entire life.

Some films never get old, no matter how many times you see them. Others are about as interesting as unseasoned popcorn. Once in a while, a movie comes along that leaves an impression that lasts a lifetime. Such is the case with deeply devoted Goonies fan, Behman Zakeri.

Fox’s Next Level Chef Season 2 Episode 7 included a series first. Additionally, Chef Richard Blais declared that one professional chef created “one of the best dishes” in the show’s history.
‘Next Level Chef’ Season 2 included a series first
In Next Level Chef Season 2 Episode 7, the chefs were challenged to make dishes using a fish the teams fileted. However, in a series first, the platform wouldn’t stop as it descended from the top floor to the basement, forcing the competitors to grab their protein quickly.
Chef Gordon Ramsey’s group occupied the top floor thanks to Preston Nguyen’s gnocchi, and they decided on the salmon. California-based chef Tucker Ricchio is also a professional butcher and took the lead on fileting on the fish. Not wanting to play it safe, Preston tried to take risks with his flavors, but Ramsey expressed concern that the young chef overcomplicated the dish.

Jayden Federline, one of Britney Spears’ two children with her ex Kevin Federline, has shed some light on the status of his relationship with his mom.
Since the ending of her conservatorship last year, Spears has gotten into online rows with most members of her family, and her children Jayden, 15 and Preston, 16, have reportedly not visited the singer in months.
“I 100 percent think this can be fixed,” Jayden told ITV of their relationship. “It’s just going to take a lot of time and effort. I just want her to get better mentally. When she gets better, I really want to see her again.”
He also said to his mother during the interview, “I love you a lot. I hope the best for you.”
Kevin Federline had also suggested in a prior interview that her high-school-aged sons were keeping their distance because of Spears’ recent nude Instagram posts, but Jayden...

Britney Spears returns to Instagram to respond to her sons Sean Preston, 16, and Jayden, 15, after their tell-all interview.
This comes after the pop star released her first song, Hold Me Closer, with Elton John — the first since the end of her 13-year conservatorship.
After gaining her freedom in November last year, the singer has spoken out about her parents and accused them of abuse.
Kevin Federline, Britney’s ex-husband, came out of the woodwork to detail the singer’s relationship with her two sons, revealing that she hasn’t seen them in several months.
He then released a video of Britney arguing with Preston and Jayden, which quickly backfired.

“Get Back” music supervisor Giles Martin sees a wonderful irony to The Beatles’ final live performance: one of the last songs that the band played on the roof of Apple Corps headquarters is also one of the first collaborations between John Lennon and Paul McCartney. “One After 909,” a bluesy American freight-train tribute, epitomized the spirit and energy of The Beatles, who had come full circle after 21 chaotic days of writing, rehearsing, and recording a new set of songs in front of director Lindsay Hogg’s documentary cameras. Those abandoned sessions would later be cobbled together as the band’s swan song, “Let It Be,” but not before the making of their final magnum opus, “Abbey Road.”
The desperate surge of musical unity on the Apple rooftop clinched Peter Jackson’s narrative through line for his miniseries treatment of Hogg’s footage. “Peter and I talked about not making it too glossy,...

We never could have guessed that the biggest twist on this week’s Sistas would come courtesy of *triple-checks notes* Bayo.
Wednesday’s episode, which we’ll break down more fully in a moment, ended with a couple of lookie-loos sneaking photos of Danni and Sabrina at the supermarket. Naturally, Danni assumed that the grocery gawkers had their eyes on her, but that wasn’t the case.

In the fifth season premiere of Paramount+’s brilliant “The Good Fight,” liberal feminist attorney Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) learns of the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg just moments before she is set to deliver an oral argument to the highest court in the land. Five episodes after the character hears this devastating news, Ginsburg appears to Diane in the form of legendary performer, writer, director and comedian Elaine May, who dons the icon’s signature dissent collar for an incredibly memorable and perfectly calibrated guest appearance.
Diane dreams up Ginsburg at a particularly tumultuous time, personally and professionally. As a white woman at the top of a historically Black law firm, Diane has been facing pressure to resign her named partner position. Her husband Kurt’s (Gary Cole) staunch Republican ideals and job offer from the National Rifle Association haven’t helped her case either and jeopardize her marriage.

Blasting off Sunday evening at the Tribeca Festival, Space Oddity is a small, character-driven dramedy of one young man’s odd life-altering plan to take a one-way ticket to Mars just as love and family intervene on his plans. If that premise sounds improbable, it actually is the kind of thing that seems to be popping up lately as fodder for various indie-centric film festivals. Earlier this year at SXSW, we saw comedian Jim Gaffigan in Linoleum, where he plays a father and husband whose lifelong dream of being an astronaut takes flight when he builds a rocket ship in his garage to do just that. Like Space Oddity, which comes from Kyra Sedgwick directing a Black List script by Rebecca Banner, that film focused on the rather offbeat behavior of its central character, much to the chagrin of his family.

The prospect of leaving Earth for good does not scare Alex (Kyle Allen). Instead, it inspires him. It’s not that he doesn’t cherish his mother, his father and his sister. They’re as close as a family can be. Nor that he is at all hopeless about the state of the world. Though he’ll admit it’s hard to plan a future on a planet that seems to have none. In his mind, Alex’s decision to embark on a possible (one way!) mission to Mars is a chance to start anew, to dream anew.
The conceit is a neat one, and as Kyra Sedgwick’s feature film directorial debut unfolds, it actually feels quite generative. Who among us wouldn’t also wish to leave everything behind and go on our interplanetary adventure? But that is all this is, a conceit. For “Space Oddity” wants to firmly ground itself on Earth,...

‘Space Oddity’ Film Review: Kyra Sedgwick’s Family Drama About a Cosmos-Obsessed Son Never Lifts Off
Billionaires may see funding space travel as the best recourse for an uninhabitable planet, but everyday folk have escape issues, too, albeit for more relatable reasons.
In the indie drama “Space Oddity,” the rocketing-to-Mars dreams of a space-obsessed young man are a barely concealed cover for lingering grief. That’s a compelling set-up for a knotty family story, but not as evidenced by the surface cutes that keep real feeling at bay in this curiously uninvolving directorial effort from Kyra Sedgwick.
We meet wholesome-looking Alex McAllister as he delivers some eager, presentational voiceover about “mankind’s next chapter,” along with glimpses of space-travel paraphernalia, and shots of him running through flower fields and woods to a percolating, galactic-tinged score out of a planetarium show. An astronaut in training, Alex is thrilled to be part of a privately funded, hotly hyped program aimed at colonizing Mars where, Alex tells us in voiceover,...

It must be nice to live in Fatima’s head, a magical fantasy realm where you’re always right and your actions carry absolutely no consequences.
Unfortunately, it’s quite a different situation outside of Fatima’s head (aka the real world), where she remains very much in police custody for playing Home Run Derby at Hayden’s apartment. But rather than showing an ounce of remorse for what she did — which includes throwing out Hayden’s father’s ashes and asking, “You wanna join him?” — she doubled down on Wednesday’s Sistas, telling Andi, “Where I’m from, we handle s–t ourselves.
