Sunday’s 65th Grammy Awards averaged 12.4 million total viewers across numerous platforms, including CBS and Paramount+, up about 30 percent from the prior year’s special and the most since 2020. That tally include out-of-home viewing.
Thank the (super-)star-studded guest list, including winners Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, and Beyoncé, for the bump.
The 2022 Grammys drew an initial 8.9 million viewers, per Nielsen, which placed the show just ahead of the record low reached in 2021. That year-ago show would adjust up to 9.6 million total viewers when including those who watched from outside of their own homes. The Covid-impacted March 14, 2021 Grammy Awards settled for just 8.8 million initial viewers, and would adjust up to 9.4 million.
The Covid Grammys, for lack of a better shorthand term, plummeted 53 percent from the January 26, 2020 special, which nabbed 18.8 million viewers. Trevor Noah hosted all three of the shows; for the first two, he was the face of Comedy Central’s...

Hip-Hop Turns 50. The Grammys Celebrate the Milestone Despite Its Complicated History With the Genre
Hip-hop has had a contentious relationship with the Grammys, but tonight’s 50th anniversary performance was a much-deserved celebration of the genre. The loaded showcase achieved performance co-curator Questlove’s previously stated goal to span the breadth of hip-hop’s 50 years. The Recording Academy has been criticized in the past for controversial award selections in the rap categories, but this performance was a decision that few hip-hop heads could complain about.

San Bernardino, California -- Hip-hop is so spontaneous that you never know where a historic moment might take place. That wasn't the case Saturday night, however: Guerilla Union informed all of us weeks ago that history would be made on August 21, 2010, in San Bernardino.
It was the kickoff of this year's Rock the Bells Tour, and out of its six previous outings, this one was surely the most inspired and ambitious. Most rappers perform on stage alongside a hype man, from Jay-z and Memphis Bleek to Busta Rhymes and Spliff Star.
But Drake — who is already unlike most MCs because he also sings during performances — worries about his background singers when he puts his shows more than who'll rap next to him.
Prior to a recent performance in Toronto, the hometown star decided during his rehearsal that his set would need more than just the band backing him.
"If I had a female voice," he says in an exclusive outtake from MTV's "Drake: Better Than Good Enough" documentary. "Someone else to go back and forth [with].
His keyboard player and musical confidant "D10" asks if Drake felt overwhelmed performing "Find Your Love" (which he also performed on "The Tonight Show" last night) onstage by himself.

With all the buzz surrounding the release of Rebirth, the mad quest to record songs before going to prison and his Twitter and Ustream habits, the biggest music-related Lil Wayne news has gotten swept under the rug a bit. That would be the release of We Are Young Money, the posse album that dropped just before the end of 2009 that secretly contains some of the best Weezy-blessed work of the past 12 months.
The album, which features contributions from Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Mack Maine, Gudda Gudda, Tyga, Lil Twist and Jae Millz. The two singles ("Every Girl," which peaked at 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "BedRock") were both heaters that had some great work from everybody (but especially Nicki Minaj, who is becoming the crew's most potent weapon). There's also some top-shelf production care of Cool & Dre, Kane Beatz and Tha Bizness, making it a wall-to-wall success.

I’ve written about Busta Rhymes shows in the past. You’ve read my praise of his and Spliff Star’s showmanship time and time again. I always throw in there that he’s one of the greatest, if not the greatest, pure live performer in hip-hop ever.
The energy doesn’t stop. They make you jump, scream, dance … everything a commanding Mc is supposed to do. The greatest thing about Mr. Rhymes and Street Colonel Spliff (please don’t forget Spliff when you talk about a Bus stage show — Spliff is more than a hype man) is that no two shows are the same. They switch it up every time I seen them. Every single time? Amazing. So often I’ve gone to rap concerts where I can tell you what the rapper is going to do before his own DJ can. They don’t switch formats. But Bus?...
