Have you ever noticed Optimus Prime in Michael Bay's "Transformers" films isn't really all that heroic? To be fair, he doesn't start that way in Bay's original 2007 "Transformers" film. There, he tries to keep the fights between the Autobots and Decepticons away from densely-populated areas and, when that's not possible, makes an active effort to minimize casualties. Optimus even implores Sam Witwicky (Shia Labeouf) to place the AllSpark (ie. the film's MacGuffin) in his chest during the climax, knowing it will kill him but will also prevent his arch-nemesis Megatron and the other Decepticons from wreaking havoc on the universe.
Of course, Sam sticks the AllSpark in Megatron's chest to kill him instead, and Optimus and the Autobots return in the 2009 sequel, "Revenge of the Fallen," now working with humanity to hunt down the remaining Decepticons. By this point, however, Optimus has basically morphed into Judge Dredd, anointing himself judge,...

“Clone High,” the animated MTV cult classic about a high school devoted to teenage clones of historical figures from creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller (the “Spider-Verse” franchise) and Bill Lawrence (“Ted Lasso”), returns with new episodes on Max 20 years after the cancellation of its sole season. The core group has thawed to confront a more complicated world of social media and new cultural norms, where “Riverdale” has replaced “Dawson’s Creek” as the coming-of-age template, complete with slightly more adult humor and even sillier situations — and fewer executive notes since the creators now wield greater power.
Back are Abe Lincoln (Will Forte), Cleopatra (Mitra Jouhari replacing Christa Miller), JFK (Chris Miller), and Joan of Arc (Nicole Sullivan). They are joined by new clone classmates Harriet Tubman (Ayo Edebiri), Frida Kahlo (Vicci Martinez), Confucius (Kelvin Yu), Topher Bus (Neil Casey as a canceled Christopher Columbus), and Sacagawea (Jana Schmieding). After two decades of being frozen in time, or canceled for lack of a better word, the amusing genetic copies of Abe Lincoln, Joan of Arc, JFK, and Cleopatra are ready to defrost and enter a new era of high school drama. The long-awaited revival of the early 2000s adult animated cult classic, Clone High is about to rise from its MTV ashes and mosey on over to Max (formerly known as HBO Max). The Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Bill Lawrence-created series centers around idiosyncratic teenage clone versions of prolific historical figures dealing with interpersonal drama with each other while facing the trials and tribulations of high school. And all under the watchful eye of secret government employees, out to prepare the teens to become ruthless world leaders.

Nearly exactly two decades after being frozen in a meat locker, the students of Clone High are finally thawing out for a pinch-us-we’re-dreaming Max revival. Well, almost all of the students.
As revealed in the first of two episodes now available to stream, the hard-partying, impossibly horny clone of Mahatma Gandhi (voiced by Mad TV‘s Michael McDonald) will remain in the freezer for the foreseeable future. Fans will surely miss the presence of Abe Lincoln’s beloved sidekick, but the decision to exclude him from the revival was a no-brainer for Clone High‘s creators.

What memories does the year 2003 stir up? The first Pirates of the Caribbean film? Ugg Boots? Freedom Fries? When the only Fast and Furious franchise sequel was 2 Fast and 2 Furious? It was a time when two fresh faced geeks, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller didn’t have The Lego Movie or Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse under their belt. In fact, they practically had no experience in Hollywood, let alone some of the most revered animated work of their era.
To cut their teeth in business, the soon-to-be dynamic duo partnered with producer Bill Lawrence (who was the force behind Spin City and Scrubs at the time and had Ted Lasso on his future docket) to create 13 episodes of a little known animated show that premiered on Teletoon in Canada and eventually MTV in the U.S. That show was Clone High,...

There’s a funny little irony to the very existence of Max’s Clone High. Originally created for MTV in the early aughts, the animated comedy centers around a bunch of teenagers who are genetic copies of notable historical figures, reborn for a new era. Now the series itself has been resurrected with much the same DNA (creators Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Bill Lawrence all return, as do most of the voice cast), but in a whole new environment. But just as characters like Abe Lincoln (Will Forte), Joan of Arc (Nicole Sullivan) and JFK (Miller) adjust to their new normal, so too does Clone High, serving up a new season that feels every bit as silly and sharp as the show did the first time around.

Last week’s “It Takes a Psycho” ended on a startling transition. One moment, we were seeing Sally deciding to run away with Barry; in the next, we were in a desolate Midwestern location where an older Barry and Sally now lived with their son, John. Was this a fantasy? Another of Barry’s metaphysical trips to hell? Or had Barry become the latest 21st-century series to unleash a big mid-episode time-jump on us(*)?

In a brief scene in her new movie 80 for Brady, Jane Fonda appears onscreen without her makeup or hair done, a collection of flowing blond wigs hung conspicuously on a rack behind her. It’s a surprisingly vulnerable moment in an otherwise broad studio comedy and a scene that Fonda specifically requested. In most of the rest of the movie, her character, Trish — a former beauty queen who now writes football-inspired erotica — is impeccably coiffed and hyper-feminine.
“It’s an exaggerated form of how I used to be,” Fonda says of Trish. “Please the guys. She’s had face-lifts.” Fonda wanted to reveal another layer to the character. “I wanted the audience to see her not done. What is it she’s covering up? All of us, we go home and we take it all off. And then we’re who we really are.”

Plenty of actors have played Abraham Lincoln well, but the actor still most associated with the role is Raymond Massey, who starred in Robert E. Sherwood’s Pulitzer Prizewinning play. The film version was not a hit, as Sherwood’s aim is to capture the melancholy, even the foreboding, of a man who was a natural for politics. In this reading Lincoln tries to resist his ‘call to greatness’ knowing he’s letting himself in for an unhappy life. The Warner Archive’s restoration retrieves the film from old 16mm prints, restoring James Wong Howe’s handsome cinematography.

“Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.” That Abraham Lincoln quote sums up the quiet, thoughtful dignity that actors have tried to portray on film for several generations now. And on screen, the 16th president has done everything from meeting Shirley Temple to fighting vampires. In honor of President’s Day, here are some of the actors who have played Honest Abe over the years.

On Wednesday’s “Late Night,” Seth Meyers warned that the stakes are extremely high for Democrats in next week’s elections and beyond. If Democrats can’t deliver on their campaign promises and give people a reason to vote for them instead of Republicans, Meyers said, they’ll lose power to people like Rudy Giuliani. Not actually Rudy Giuliani, because his political career is finished, but people who believe the things he believes and behave as bizarrely.
The specific thing Meyers’ favorite target for mockery did was to post a truly bizarre video where he pretended to be Abraham Lincoln and urged Virginians to vote against the Democratic candidate governor, Terry McAuliffe. Giuliani used an augmented reality filter that simulated Lincoln’s top hat and beard, and he spoke in a bizarre accent that started out sort of Southern and ended sort of German. Why Lincoln, you may be wondering?...

“America: The Motion Picture,” Netflix’s first R-rated animated feature, offers a satirical, revisionist reworking of the American Revolution, in which a chainsaw-wielding George Washington (voiced by Channing Tatum) fights the British with a merry band of Colonial misfits to avenge the death of his Bff, Abe Lincoln (voiced by Will Forte). They include beer-worshiping Sam Adams (Jason Mantzoukas), gender-bending science wiz Thomas Edison (Olivia Munn), “horse-racist” Paul Revere (Bobby Moynihan), one-armed Apache leader Geronimo (Raoul Trujillo), and handy blacksmith John Henry (Killer Mike).

For the second week in a row, “Saturday Night Live” had the task of working with — and trying to figure out how to use — a first-time host. Last week, it was Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”), and this week, it’s David Harbour (“Stranger Things”), which means the war between Amazon and Netflix rages on. Or something like that.
Host: David Harbour
As far as a first-time host like David Harbour goes, his opening monologue could’ve gone a number of ways. “SNL” could’ve brought back the old “audience” Q&a (with a cameo from any of his “Stranger Things” castmates) or gone back to the old crutch of the musical monologue or even just done the simple “‘SNL’ cast members show up and interrupt” bit. Instead, they went with the most obvious one in hindsight, the “SNL” studio tour turned Upside Down.

Matthew McConaughey is surprisingly flexible for such an inimitable actor; he can play anybody, and yet there’s no one else quite like him. He’s been a Hollywood leading man for more than 20 years — starring in adventure movies, sci-fi epics, stripper masterpieces, a smattering of mostly regrettable rom-coms, and more — but he’s never really settled into a type. He can do it all, but the easygoing Austin native is at his best when it seems like he’s just being himself. In an industry that swallows actors whole and spits them out on the regular, McConaughey has survived by embracing a “just keep livin’” philosophy that makes you feel like he’s just happy to be here. And if his shaggy, self-possessed, and almost supernaturally high portrayal of Moondog in “The Beach Bum” feels like McConaughey’s defining performance, that’s because it barely seems like he’s acting at all.

For many kids, there’s something special about Halloween. There’s a magical property to picking out a costume, dressing up, and going door-to-door asking for candy. Halloween lets children express themselves and be whomever they want to be, whether that’s a superhero, a unicorn, or Abe Lincoln. That magic fades as puberty and teenagerhood beckon, but there’s a lot of nostalgia associated with the spooky holiday.
The spirit of Halloween is perfectly captured in the 2010 video game “Costume Quest,” developed by San Francisco-based studio Double Fine Productions and published by the now-defunct Thq. The role-playing game used cutesy graphics and a classic turn-based combat system to tell a story about becoming something different on Halloween, with kids quite literally becoming their costumes to fight monsters.
