Early in HBO’s Swedish-language adaptation “Beartown,” two people are running desperately through the snow. One is carrying a rifle, and the other is doing their best to avoid getting shot. Their faces are obscured, any telling identification avoided, but the chase ends with the hunter and prey isolated on a frozen lake, the latter kneeling in front of the former, before the image cuts to black just before a shot rings out.
Considering the audience learns both identities before the end of the second episode, this intense introductory scene isn’t meant to tease a mystery. “Beartown” is a blunt story, stocked with direct lessons. Still, it’s patient about revealing its thesis, and the life-or-death stakes set up from the get-go help to prepare the audience for when normal life in a small Swedish town turns very, very ugly. For a while, it may seem like “Beartown” will...

CBS All Access will not move forward with a second season of the experimental police drama “Interrogation,” the streaming service said Wednesday.
The 10-episode series centered on a case in which a young man was charged and convicted of brutally murdering his mother. The non-linear series was structured such that viewers were allowed to watch the episodes in any order, which CBS All Access billed as an opportunity for viewers to “follow the evidence like a cold case detective, abandon the linear narrative and determine their own investigative path.”
“Anders Weidemann, John Mankiewicz and Fabrik Entertainment’s unique approach to exploring an unsolved true-crime in Interrogation allowed the audience to follow their own investigative path of evidence and suspecting characters throughout a 10-episode arc,” CBS All Access head of programming Julie McNamara said in a statement. “They led an amazing team of writers, directors and cast, all of whom delivered...

“Interrogation” was picked up back in late 2018 and hailed from co-creators by Anders Weidemann (“30 Degrees in February”) and John Mankiewicz (“House of Cards”). It was based on a true story that spanned more than 30 years, in which a young man was charged and convicted of brutally murdering his mother. The addition of streaming services to the television landscape ushered in a larger wave of serialized programming, offering viewers the chance to binge a longer form story all in one setting. For a time, many believed the days of old-fashioned procedurals or sitcoms, of which you could watch episodes in any order because each one stood alone, was on its way out. That didn’t fully prove to be true, as the anthological storytelling structure was leaned into, creating standalone stories that all felt of one larger piece due to theme. And now, as these new platforms are in increasing competition with each other for consumers given the steady increase in content (more than 500 scripted series available per year alone), those two ideas have been melded together for one interactive drama: CBS All Access’s “Interrogation,” a 10-episode fictionalization of a true crime that the audience can watch in any episode order.

Former The Outsiders star Kyle Gallner is set as the lead in CBS All Access’ straight-to-series true-crime drama Interrogation.
Co-created by Swedish writer-producer Anders Weidemann and John Mankiewicz, Interrogation is an original concept based on a true story that spanned more than 30 years, in which a young man (Gallner) was charged and convicted of brutally murdering his mother. He is sentenced to life in prison, and spends the next two decades fighting to prove his innocence. Since the episodes are made to be watched in any order, the audience will jump back and forth in time, witnessing this man’s story unfold in multiple timelines — played at all ages by Gallner.
Peter Sarsgaard and David Strathairn also star.

David Strathairn to Star Opposite Peter Sarsgaard on CBS All Access True-Crime Drama ‘Interrogation’
David Strathairn will star opposite Peter Sarsgaard on CBS All Access’ upcoming true-crime drama series “Interrogation,” an individual with knowledge of the casting tells TheWrap.
Co-created by Anders Weidemann and John Mankiewicz, “Interrogation” is based on a true story that spanned more than 30 years, in which a young man was charged and convicted of brutally murdering his mother. Each episode is structured around an interrogation taken directly from the real police case files. The first nine episodes of the series will be available to watch in any order, with the conclusive season finale to be released at a later date.

HBO Europe has greenlit Swedish original drama Beartown, an adaptation of Fredrik Backman’s novel of the same name, to be directed by Peter Grönlund (Goliath). Series will be produced by Filmlance International, which is part of Endemol Shine Group. The five-part one-hour series, written by Anders Weidemann, Antonia Pyk and Linn Gottfridsson, will star Ulf Stenberg and Aliette Opheim. The story follows the goings on in the small town of Beartown, which is slowly losing ground to the ever-encroaching trees surrounding it, but with the junior ice-hockey team having a shot at winning the national semi-finals, all the dreams of the town rest on the shoulders of a handful of teenage boys. It’s heavy burden that becomes the catalyst for a violent act that will leave a young girl traumatized and a town in turmoil.
