In a voicemail to a crush two years her senior, Mira (Preeti Panigrahi) wonders if her feelings are “puppy love [or] maybe it’s big dog love.” Directed by Shuchi Talati, Girls Will Be Girls has an unfortunate title that makes it sound like a sugary teen comedy. It’s a far more nuanced, interesting portrait of a 16-year-old girl coming to terms with a sexual awakening and her young mother, who never quite had the chance to experience one either.
Mira is “head prefect” of her rural boarding school in the Himalayas. She is essentially a class president expected to model and enforce exemplary behavior, warning fellow classmates about their duty to live up to the expectations of the conservative institution. In an early interaction with her mother Anila (Kani Kusruti), she chides her for being on campus, only to be reminded that alumni are permitted. Anila is far from a strict mother,...

In the tempest of puberty, the adolescent soul undergoes a metamorphosis akin to a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly. As this hormonal symphony plays out, the parental figure, once an unwavering beacon of guidance, may suddenly seem like an outdated lighthouse in the stormy sea of adolescence. The generational gap, instead of being a mere product of age, becomes a temporal paradox—a collision of parallel timelines where elders yearn to reclaim lost opportunities, and youth strive to forge their destinies. Shuchi Talati‘s debut feature, Girls Will Be Girls is an impressive and tender coming-of-age drama, skillfully handled with a sure touch. As the writer and director, she exhibits a keen understanding of the maelstrom of emotions that surge when we undergo the blossoming of youthfulness in our first romantic relationship. The film takes us on a delicate journey of self-discovery for a teenage girl as she aligns herself with the symphony of growth,...

Before Mira (Preeti Panigrahi), a headstrong and academically gifted 16-year-old, met Sri (Kesav Binoy Kiron), she didn’t think about love. She focused on her classwork and dreamed of perfect scores. Their courtship, a series of endearing encounters that start with a night of stargazing, changes her priorities. Now, Mira studies Sri’s body, fantasizes about their kisses and competes for his attention.
The drama of Shuchi Talati’s debut feature Girls Will Be Girls unfurls at the speed of a realization. It is a slow and deliberate narrative, with a pace that reflects the emotional currents of Mira’s life. Acclimating to its lingering rhythm, its loitering sensibility, takes time. Premiering in the World Dramatic Competition at Sundance, Talati’s film offers a sensitive and distinctive take on the fraught dynamics between mothers and daughters.

“And the air was full of Thoughts and Things to Say. But at times like these, only the Small Things are ever said. Big Things lurk unsaid inside.” Those words, from Arundhati Roy’s 1997 novel The God of Small Things, come to mind while watching Shuchi Talati’s Girls Will Be Girls, a coming-of-age tale about a teenage girl who’s trying to navigate her newfound romantic feelings, burgeoning sexual desires, and longstanding familial tensions in a society where none of these things can be spoken about openly. Through its tender storytelling, complex characters, and intimate, tactile camerawork, Talati’s impressive debut feature manages to make all of these unspoken elements ring out loud and clear.

For better or worse, there’s a tradition of precocious teens on film.
From “Heathers” to “Mean Girls” to “Euphoria” to “Mean Girls” again, teenagers — especially American ones — are perceptive, manipulative, sexualized, and adventurous… eminently watchable even when they’re not relatable.
But elsewhere in the world of filmmaking and adolescence, there are so many other ways to grow up. There are teenagers who still feel like children, others who can’t act on their changing minds and bodies, others still who don’t share their peers’ new interests and feel alienated as a result. Shuchi Talati’s striking Sundance debut “Girls Will Be Girls” is about one such teenager, the quiet, obedient, and book-smart Mira (Preeti Panigrahi).
Mira is the first female head prefect to be appointed at her boarding school in North India, a responsibility she does not take lightly as she is tasked with keeping classmates and friends in check.

A mother and daughter both come of age in “Girls Will Be Girls,” Shuchi Talati’s gentle English-Hindi high school drama set in the Himalayan foothills. In this engrossing feature debut about angst and desire, the draconian Indian boarding school setting robs its teen protagonist of the language to express (or fully understand) her burgeoning sexuality. Talati, however, fills in those wordless blanks with images both graceful and precise, yielding breathtaking tension when the boundaries between her mother and her boyfriend begin to blur.
At the start of 12th grade, 16-year-old Mira (Preeti Panigrahi) is the first girl at her institution ever named Head Prefect, a title earned for her impeccable academic record. The prestigious appointment comes with duties that involve reprimanding her friends and peers, either because their uniforms aren’t up to code, or because the girls have been spending too much time hanging around the boys (who...

Mira’s exploration of desire is stunted by the middling presence of her mother (Kani Kusruti), whose disapproval likely stems from an inadequate coming-of-age process during her own youth. The 40th edition of Sundance Film Festival kicks off today, and notably, queer and Himalaya-themed films take over the Asian/Asian diaspora slate of the mountain festival. In previous years, Sundance has been a frontier for Asian diaspora films. Last year alone saw a full slate of Asian diaspora films, with “Past Lives” (Celine Song), “Shortcomings” (Randall Park), “The Persian Version” (Maryam Keshavarz), and more, among others – there are considerably less Asian American films in the primary competition. This year, in the US Dramatic Competition, only one film, “Didi (弟弟)” by Sean Wang stands out amid the crowd.
Films about the Himalayas have taken center-stage in the World Cinema Competitions, however, with three titles this year: “Girls will be Girls” (Shuchi Talati), “Agent of Happiness” (Arun Bhattarai), and “Nocturnes” (Anirban Dutta). Queer Asian diaspora cinema is front and center this year as well, with “Layla” (Amrou Al-Khadi) and “Desire Lines...

Sam Altman, a major figure in Silicon Valley‘s burgeoning AI industry who earlier this year testified before Congress on the dangers of the technology, has been removed as CEO of OpenAI, according to a company statement. The surprise firing has set off a flurry of questions about why a startup currently positioned for a valuation of up to $90 billion would cut ties with its chief executive.
Shortly after news of Altman’s ousting, the company’s president Greg Brockman, who earlier stepped down from the board, announced he was quitting.

This article contains spoilers for Legendary’s “MonsterVerse” films.
Apple+‘s newest blockbuster series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, has now arrived to flesh out the larger than life “MonsterVerse.” Legacy Pictures has been building this shared universe filled with infamous kaiju ever since the reboot of Godzilla in 2014, and since, has given us all the classic monsters including Ghidora, Mothra, Rodan and of course, Kong.
Legacy of Monsters helps fill the little gaps in the periphery of the story, fleshing out the humans who choose to find, study, and often protect these massive creatures. At the center of it all has always been the imposing consortium known as “Monarch.” With all the giant-sized kaiju-chaos that can often be the most memorable moments of these monster movies, it’s understandable if Monarch shrinks in the presence of the true stars of the show. Not to worry, though, because we’re about...

We thought there was a possibility that “Most Memorable Year Night” on “Dancing with the Stars” would be a non-elimination night, but alas, Oscar winner Mira Sorvino was sent home at the end of the evening. Gold Derby contributor Cordell Martin “was kind of bummed that Mira went home earlier than I think we would love for her to go,” but “she was just one of those contestants … who’s really good, but just couldn’t find her footing in terms of being at the top of the leaderboard or having that strong fan base to carry her through.” Watch Martin’s slugfest with Jeffrey Kare and Daniel Montgomery above.
We didn’t just shed tears for Sorvino, though. “Most Memorable Year” was also the night the show paid tribute to late judge Len Goodman, who died this past April after appearing on the show since its debut in 2005. Pro...

Catfish: The TV Show stars Nev Schulman and Kamie Crawford shared that the new MTV season will be the darkest they’ve filmed to date, which includes quite a few shocking money scams.
“We have some uplifting, happy-ending episodes, but yeah, I think people are going harder. They’re giving more money. They’re making bigger sort of irreversible decisions,” Schulman told Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “I don’t know if it’s desperation that people feel in terms of trying to find someone or force themselves into these relationships, despite the many roadblocks and red flags. But yeah, things get a little kind of dark.”
“This season is the most money we’ve seen someone spend on Catfish before … ever,” Crawford added. “I mean, collectively, this whole entire rest of the season is going to be a lot of money spent. Get your calculators out. Add it up. I think...

This article contains spoilers for the Oct. 3 episode of “Dancing With the Stars.”
Latin Night saw a lot of missteps on “Dancing With the Stars,” but also some very sexy Sambas, Salsas and Rumbas. Actress Xochitl Gomez and singer Jason Mraz tied at the top of the leaderboard with 24 points each.
Marvel star Xochitl joked that with a name like hers, people would expect she was “born knowing how to Salsa,” but that it wasn’t true. “Salsa is your superpower,” said judge Carrie Ann Inaba, who compared her to Egot singer, actress and dancer Rita Moreno. Derek Gough gushed, “Your spins are out of control,” calling her performance “exceptional,” while Bruno Tonioli proclaimed it “superb.”
Singer Jason Mraz, a surprise breakout dance star in Week 1, had the last dance of the evening, a romantic Rumba with Daniella Karagach. Derek raved, “You nailed it.”

“Mississippi Masala” director Mira Nair says she was nervous to ask Denzel Washington to be more vulnerable in his scenes with Sarita Choudhury in the swooningly romantic 1991 drama.
“I fell in love during the making of this film during the writing of the screenplay of this film,” Nair recalled at a Women in Film screening Thursday night at Vidiots. “I experienced what I call the stupor of love. I was really weak-kneed,” she said in a post-screening Q&a. “And that was what I wanted from Denzel and Sarita. Sarita got it, but Denzel… no one talks to him like that,” she said with a smile.
She had hired because of his turn in 1988’s “For Queen and Country,” and said he was nailing every other aspect of the role. “He’s a consummate actor. He is just extraordinary. But when it came to the love stuff, I was wanting more.

“Dancing With the Stars” Season 32 kicked off right on schedule on Tuesday night, with all 15 couples, even temporary holdout actor Matt Walsh, hitting the dance floor for the first time.
“Bachelorette” star Charity Lawson and partner Artem Chigvintsev earned the highest score of the evening for their Tango, which judge Bruno Tonioli proclaimed to be “exquisite,” while Carrie Ann Inaba said it was “stunning,” especially for Week 1.
Charity took the lead from singer Jason Mraz, whose Cha-Cha-Cha with Daniella Karagacha to his own song, “I Feel Like Dancing,” prompted Bruno to dub him “the one to watch.” Jason, who claimed his higher-than-average dancing skills were due to an “extra vertebra,” earned a “7” from each judge.
After the audience votes were added, “Rhobh” star Mauricio Umansky and “Veep” star Matt Walsh were in the bottom two. Matt’s “non-traditional” Cha-Cha-Cha with partner Koko Iwasaki received a “4,” from each judge, a decision the audience booed.

Ananda (Tannishtha Chatterjee) says it all towards the end of Wendy Bednarz’s feature debut Yellow Bus: “There were so many chances to save her life.” That’s the message at the center of its tragedy. Not justice, but acknowledgement. Because while it’s easy to blame anyone whose presence touched a senseless and avoidable death, few (if any) are actual murderers. Grief has a tendency of blinding us from this fact, though. Even when the person we blame most is ourselves.
Ananda, conversely, wants justice. She saw the way the school bus door jammed after Ravina (Aarushi Laud) and Anju (Kshethra Mithun) boarded and how it didn’t when she’s supposedly shown the same bus again after the latter girl was left inside to die of hyperthermia. She sees the obvious guilt in the academy principal’s (Kinda Alloush’s Mira) eyes when attempting to give Ananda...

Netflix’s movie selection will make this a September to remember. From an abundance of romantic comedies and dramedies arriving on the streamer this month to fun-loving animation that tells heartfelt stories, there is no shortage of stream-worthy content as the colder months approach. While fall technically does not start until Sept. 21, this list may or may not supply some watch suggestions for pumpkin spice season.

You know, there’s this saying in the film Neeyat that really sticks with you: the more you see a lie, the more you believe it’s the truth. It’s quite fitting for the whole story we’re diving into here, as it revolves around the businessman Ashish Kapoor, who’s the big shot at Ak Industries. The thing is, he’s found dead during his birthday bash in this remote castle, and there are a whole bunch of characters involved in this tangled web. Now, all these characters are connected to Ashish Kapoor in some way or another. They each bring their piece to the puzzle, and then comes Mira Rao, a senior Cbi officer.
Mira steps onto the scene and starts piecing it all together. As she delves into it, she realizes that every single person has a pretty strong reason to want Ashish Kapoor gone for good.

Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac might be putting a freeze frame on their friendship after “Scenes from a Marriage.”
There’s no question that Chastain and Isaac, who’ve been friends since their early Juilliard Drama School days, went to tough places in the 2021 HBO miniseries created by Hagai Levi. Based on Ingmar Bergman’s own 1973 miniseries, “Scenes from a Marriage” starred the pair as Jonathan and Mira, a married couple falling spectacularly apart in the wake of Mira’s infidelity and Jonathan’s deep-seated repressions stemming from his old-world Jewish faith.
The series, which spanned five episodes and earned Isaac a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Actor but not one for Chastain, plays out as a collection of extended dialogues between the two characters, often identifying each other’s weaknesses and amounting to long scenes of yelling, tears, and breakdowns. Isaac, at one point, sang to Chastain to ease...

The first project to emerge from a multi-picture deal between Mpca and Parks, The Image of You has Pieterse playing identical twins Anna and Zoe, who share a bond so close that nothing — and no one — can tear them apart. While Anna is romantic and trusting, her sister Zoe is daring and dangerous.

According to The Verge, Apple has hired at least 11 of Mira’s employees as part of the acquisition.
The report cited a private Instagram post by Mira CEO Ben Taft.

Jony Ive, Apple’s former product designer, was once an advisor to Mira, according to the report.

How did writer-director Jim Strouse get Celine Dion to play herself and write five new songs for his film “Love Again?”
“It took months, maybe even a full year,” Strouse tells Variety. “There was a lot of thought, eating, letters and lookbooks.”
The Sony feature-length stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Mira) and Sam Heughan (Rob) as depressed singles that meet in a not-so-ordinary way after inadvertently exchanging a series of intimate and embarrassing text messages. Strouse found the film charming and a good blueprint that he could shape up after a few key changes.
