The announcement of winners for the ASCAP Screen Music Awards, being held virtually again for 2022 and announced Monday morning, included revealing the top vote-getters for several Composers’ Choice Awards, including the scores for “Encanto” and “The White Lotus.”
Germaine Franco prevailed for film score of the year for “Encanto.” Cristobal Tapia de Veer won two of these peer-voted awards, for television score of the year and television theme as well, for “The White Lotus. The video game score of the year honor went to Wataru Hokoyama for “Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.” Triumphing in the documentary score of the year category was Amanda Jones for “Dreamland: The Burning of Black Wall Street.”
Those five Composers’ Choice Awards come on top of ASCAP’s traditional Screen Music Awards, which collect date to honor the most-consumed music of the year in the fields of TV, film and video games, with dozens of winners cited.

By now, you all know the drill. When we have a busy week, article wise, when there isn’t enough space to get to everything hitting theaters, we use part of the weekend to catch up on reviews. Today, the round up has three titles to detail, which again represent a trio of very different genres. There’s the teen mystery Low Tide, the documentary Memory: The Origins of Alien, as well as the action outing Semper Fi. How are these films? Are any of them worth recommending? All of them? Well, read on to find out my take on each of the movies below… Low Tide Back at the Tribeca Film Festival, this teen-centric drama/mystery/thriller played, and I was bummed to have missed it. “I loved the subculture and how it looked and felt,” director Jeremy Saulnier recently told us about his earlier days. “It’s always evolving, thousands of subgenres of metal, punk, hardcore you could find. You could find your tribe no matter what, but within a general subculture it was one of the most diverse. I was attracted to the more aggressive side of the music. I loved metal and just felt I needed to harness that power. As I got older and more into the film, I felt this inevitable connection and I could never find closure on that experience and I had to archive it.”
The result is Green Room, a terrifically intense thriller that’s now in limited release and expanding in the coming weeks. If it’s not in your town yet, you can experience some of it as the full soundtrack has now arrived, featuring a...
