On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Is This What I Told Myself It Would Be?
Directed by Marjane Satrapi and written by Michael R. Perry, “The Voices” has a phenomenal trailer — snappy, stunning, and with a hunky Chinese Elvis impersonator! I would know; I’ve seen it dozens of times in the decade since Lionsgate made the movie: a feature that, up until now, I haven’t watched and will be using this week’s IndieWire After Dark to recommend to myself. Let me (us?) explain.

Bejoy Nambiar, in the past few years since the advent of Ott content, has come up with many stories for the streaming platforms and for theaters as well. As a writer-director, he has always been known for exploring cool subjects. Sadly, he overindulges himself, and the movie or the show quickly gets out of hand. Dange, which means riots, is a film that he ambitiously directed alongside a Tamil version, trying to pull off what Mani Ratnam did with Ravan/Ravanan and Yuva/Aaytha Ezhuthu. The Tamil film is called Por and follows the same plot as the Hindi one. Set in Goa, Dange is about rivalry between two men who seemed to have a history much before they ran into each other years later in St. Martins University.

After watching the film Bosco, I find myself caught in a whirlwind of conflicting emotions and perspectives. On the surface, it may seem like just another prison break movie with stereotypical characters and a somewhat predictable escape sequence. However, as the narrative unfolds, a deeper and more profound exploration of the human quest for freedom emerges, transforming the film into a captivating experience. The journey of Quawntay Adams, also known as ‘Bosco’, initially centered around the attempted illegal dealing of marijuana, for which he was sentenced to confinement in prison for 35 years. But the story takes an unexpected turn when he escapes prison with the help of a woman named Tammy, as he is desperate to meet his newborn daughter.
Spoilers Ahead
The escape itself may not be groundbreaking in its execution. Still, from the very beginning, Bosco’s character embodies the relentless pursuit of liberation, not just from physical...

“What if I don’t like the guy I am now, bro” says Bosco (Malcolm Kamulete). “You have to learn to like him ‘cause you’re stuck with him” says Rusty (Keiren Hamilton-Amos). Watching family dynamics play out on screen never goes out of fashion and BBC’s latest drama Champion is proof of that.
A love letter to South London, Champion is the first TV project written by Candice Carty-Williams, author of the 2019 novel Queenie, which will also be released as a TV drama on Channel 4 later this year. Champion tells the story of the titular family, focusing mostly on the Champion siblings, rapper Bosco and his sister Vita (Déja J Bowens) as they battle with their sense of duty to their family and their own musical success.

"Humans are the greatest weakness in any security system." Peacock has revealed an official trailer for a film called Bosco, a prison escape thriller based on a true story. Finally something that might just live up to the classic Escape from Alcatraz! Hopefully. Based on the true story of Quawntay "Bosco" Adams, who also produced the film. Sentenced to 35 years for attempted possession of marijuana, Adams miraculously escaped from a Federal maximum-security prison in 2006 while under 24-hour surveillance in solitary with the help of a woman he met through a lonely-hearts ad. This features a compelling cast including Aubrey Joseph as "Bosco", Nikki Blonsky as "Tammy", Tyrese Gibson as "Tootie", Vivica A. Fox as "Willa", Theo Rossi as "Ramos", and Thomas Jane as "Hunt". Bosco will feature original music from leading hip-hop artists, including Snoop Dogg, French Montana, The Game, Ddg, & more. Looks solid though probably not a new prison escape classic.

After the party anthem, ‘Sher Khul Gaye’ from the upcoming Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone-starrer ‘Fighter’, the makers on Friday released another song titled ‘Ishq Jaisa Kuch’ of the film.
The song radiates romance as it buzzes with the palpable chemistry between Hrithik and Deepika.
It is set against picturesque landscapes and has a melody at its heart that resonates deeply with the listener.
Sonically, it has a vibe similar to Daft Punk with punchy and groovy guitar line and reminds of ‘Ghungroo Toot Gaye’ from the Hrithik Roshan-starrer ‘War’.
Hrithik took to his Instagram on Friday and shared the song. He wrote in the caption, “Hai ishq?… Ya hai woh… #IshqJaisaKuch. Song Out Now! Catch the Full song Only on the Big screen.”
The song has been composed by music director duo Vishal & Sheykhar and has been crooned by Shilpa Rao, and Mellow D with lyrics furnished by Kumaar.

On Wednesday, August 10, in partnership with the Carrera Cafe in Los Angeles, queens from season 14 of VH1’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race” unveiled a sickening FYC Mural to celebrate their show’s eight Emmy nominations and the three additional bids for sister series “Untucked,” “All Stars” and “Whatcha Packin’ with Michelle Visage.” Lady Camden, Bosco, Kerri Colby, June Jambalaya, Jasmine Kennedie and DeJa Skye were all in attendance and, following the unveiling, volunteered at the LA LGBT Center in Hollywood by filling food delivery boxes for community families.
The mural is displayed on the outer wall of the Melrose Avenue cafe that will also have special “Drag Race” coffee topper promotions and limited edition coffee cup sleeves as part of the month-long celebration. Depictions of the queens’ faces make up the image of the mural and so naturally they each posed for photo ops there before sipping down a latte that...

“It’s a little overwhelming at times,” admits Nick Murray, the director of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” on VH1, during Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts: TV Directors panel. He’s already won two Emmys for helming the reality TV show in 2018 and 2021, and is now one of the eight nominations it nabbed this year. “I didn’t expect this yesteryear, as a teenager wanting to direct television many, many moons ago, so this is beyond my wildest dreams. I’m living the dream, if you will.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Murray is nominated for directing the Season 14 musical episode “Moulin Ru: The Rusical,” a technical feast that included pre-production, choreography, music, set design, lighting, camera blocking, rehearsals, etc. “We shot it over 12 hours … pretty much as live, which is a testament to the crew,” he recalls. Even though the musical episodes are obviously quite challenging, for Murray...

We're revisiting the 1997 film year in the lead up to the next Supporting Actress Smackdown. As always Nick Taylor will suggest a few alternates to Oscar's ballot.
I’m betting that we have some thoughts about Ms. Goop. Some of these thoughts might be compartmentalized to certain aspects of her career, while others bleed over into a general patina of how one perceives her. We (the writer of this article) won’t and frankly don’t have the time to get into the grifter empire, the nepotism, her instrumentality amongst the many journalists and witnesses who helped to bring down Harvey Weinstein, Bosco’s awful 'Snatch Game', the lazy potshots from Knives Out, or her advice to combat the symptoms of Long Covid using a keto diet as she is currently doing, but know that these thoughts are in the back of our mind at all times when the subject...

As the choreographer of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Miguel Zarate’s goal is to ensure that every Queen stands out and hits their mark. “I always tell the girls, ‘if you look like trash, I look even worse,’” he says. “It’s my job to make them look amazing.”
Iconic drag artist and host RuPaul searches for “America’s next drag superstar” in this VH1 reality competition. The contestants compete in various challenges that test their performance skills, and choreography tends to be one of the more difficult skills to master. It’s not just about mastering the skill, as each Queen needs to make sure they don’t blend into the background of the performance.
For the dance numbers, Zarate is given a script before each Queen has a role, so he has to create a base for the choreography before they step on stage. As they start to learn the basic movements,...

“Normally, on one reality show you look for one or two things. With this we’re looking for like eight,” exclaims “RuPaul’s Drag Race” casting director Ethan Peterson. He and fellow casting director Goloka Bolte have earned two consecutive Emmy Awards for bringing beloved drag queens to the screen. Before a queen can rocket to stardom on the hit reality series, they must first make an impression with these two creatives. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The key to scoring a slot in the “Drag Race” competition is a killer audition tape and this pair of casting directors watches them all. “We’re looking for those authentic voices, queens who really know who they are and bring something fresh and new to the table,” explains Bolte. She admits that in order to get through the inundation of audition reels there are “a lot of late nights in pajamas,” but the hours are worth it.

“It was a huge undertaking, but something I had dreamt about for so long,” confesses Miguel Zarate about becoming the choreographer for Season 14 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” He inherited the title from Jamal Sims, who Zarate describes as a “father figure.” The dance guru put the queens’ moves to the test during an iconic “Rusical,” a 60’s-inspired girls group number, and the epic original songs for the top 5 contestants. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
One of the most acclaimed maxi challenges from Season 14 was the Rusical, “Moulin Ru.” It’s inspired, of course, by the Broadway adaptation of “Moulin Rouge!” but that doesn’t mean Zarate was content to plunder Sonya Tayeh’s Tony-winning dance numbers. “I definitely wasn’t looking at her choreography, nor any form of reference,” confides Zarate. “I just wanted to take the reins and have my own creative freedom with it.” Character work was...
