Snapchat and Atom Tickets have launched “Movie Tickets By Atom,” a ticketing service first announced two months ago as part of the line of “Minis” unveiled by the social network.
The app provides users in the U.S. and Canada with trailers and tickets and connects moviegoers’ plans with their personal networks. While Covid-19 has eliminated the traditional summer blockbuster season, with theater closures ongoing in New York, California and other states, theater circuits have gradually begun to reopen across the U.S.
The partners in the new ticketing venture say it will capitalize on pent-up demand. Atom said it surveyed 16,000 moviegoers online and found that 74% are ready to return to theaters in the next month, with 40% interested in an immediate return.
“With safety measures in place and movie fans eager to return to the movies, we knew the timing was right to launch Atom’s ticketing experience on Snapchat,...

Avengers: Endgame has managed to beat yet another commercial record over on Atom Tickets, where the film is now the biggest pre-seller in the history of the site.
In its first 10 days, the Avengers: Infinity War sequel beat the pre-sales record that last year’s Aquaman set over the course of 32 days. In a recent statement, Atom Tickets chairman and co-founder Matthew Bakal shared a few thoughts on the feature’s remarkable performance.
“The Avengers: Endgame phenomenal pre-sales period has proven it is in a league of its own,” Bakal said. “The anticipation and excitement for this movie is simply unmatched and the only question is how much farther will pre-sales climb with another two weeks to go. We’re in awe of the creative work Marvel, Disney, the cast and crew have put into making Avengers: Endgame a global event for all Marvel fans to experience together as the...

“Avengers: Endgame” keeps breaking box office records, and it’s still two weeks away from opening.
Atom Tickets announced Friday that the Marvel superhero sequel cracked their record for the best pre-sale title of all time on their service. And it only took 10 days to set the new record. Previously, DC’s “Aquaman” was the best selling film in pre-sales, and it took 32 days to set that record.
Atom already reported that “Endgame” had smashed several records within hours of it going on sale, selling five times as much as “Aquaman” did in its first day, and three times as much as “Avengers: Infinity War” did after just an hour of being on sale. And after its first week of pre-sales, “Endgame” sold nearly twice as many tickets as the next four record holders combined, which includes “Aquaman,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Captain Marvel.”

Highest debut of year-to-date seems certain. Can it go as high as $300m?
Avengers: Endgame, already a record holder for advance ticket sales, is on track to open in the $200m-$250m range in North America and stands a good chance of usurping current champion Avengers: Infinity War and go higher than $257.7m.
Marvel Studios’ upcoming 22nd release – it opens on April 26 – comes hot on the heels of the $1bn global milestone set by this year’s Captain Marvel.
Industry observers say there is no question it will exceed Captain Marvel’s $153.4m opening weekend in early March to score...

MoviePass and Sinemia may be floundering, but Atom Tickets still sees opportunity in the movie theater subscription space.
However, the ticketing service is going about things very differently from those companies. Atom is launching a new offering that will enable exhibitors to launch their own customized subscription services while relying on Atom’s infrastructure and technology. It hasn’t signed up any theaters yet, but is starting to have conversations with exhibitors. Atom plans to pitch the service, christened Atom Movie Access, at the exhibition industry trade show, CinemaCon, which takes place next week in Las Vegas.
MoviePass’s low-price plans, which initially allowed users to see a movie a day for less than $10 a month, proved to be disastrous. The company has lost hundreds of millions of dollars and its parent company’s stock price is in free fall. But it did successfully introduce the idea of subscriptions to U.

Aquaman is still over a week away from reaching North American theaters, but Arthur Curry’s solo debut already holds a few commercial records worth bragging about. As well as earning the best opening in China of any DC movie to date, James Wan’s flick has beaten the likes of Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2 to sell more advance tickets on Atom Tickets than any other film in the site’s history.
To put this achievement into context, a significant factor here is the exclusive offer to Amazon Prime members, which allows people to buy tickets on Atom for special screenings happening one week before the feature’s actual release. Still, it’s a promising sign of things to comes for the upcoming Warner Bros. film, prompting Atom Tickets co-founder and chairman Matthew Bakal to celebrate the news in a recent statement:

Atom Tickets is a kinder, gentler disruptor.
Exhibitors may be viewing MoviePass, the subscription service for filmgoing, about as warmly as they would the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, but they’re much more bullish on start-up ticketing service Atom.
Part of the reason is that the company, which was founded in 2014 and had a national rollout two years later, has put concessions front and center in its business model. Theaters, of course, make much of their profits selling customers popcorn and carbonated beverages at healthy markups.
“We want movie theaters to be the same as every other aspect of consumers’ lives,” says Matthew Bakal, co-founder and chairman of Atom. “Domino’s, Starbucks, Subway and everyone under the sun allows digital ordering.”
So Atom has integrated food and drink sales into its service. It’s offering digital preorders in 300 theaters and plans to be in 400 by the end of 2018. It’s available in Regal,...

What happens in a year without Star Wars or Bond? On the eve of CinemaCon (April 11-14), John Hazelton looks at how Us exhibitors plan to keep audiences visiting the big screen.
Us exhibitors — the savvy ones at least — know the Force may not always be with them. Though Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World and Avengers: Age Of Ultron drove the North American box office to a record $11.2bn tally in 2015, the success of those films also underlined cinema operators’ reliance on the kind of blockbusters that don’t necessarily come along every year. And the record tally didn’t alter the fact North American cinema attendance has been essentially stagnant for the past decade (1.32 billion tickets were sold last year, 4% up on 2014 but down on four of the previous five years).
No wonder exhibitors in the Us and Canada remain eager to find new ways to maximise their revenues — by making the most out...
