In Stan Original film Christmas on the Farm, premiering December 1, Poppy Montgomery plays Clementine Jones, an Australian author whose book about getting back to nature on a blissful Queensland farm is snapped up by New York powerhouse publishers London & London. But the truth is, “Clementine” is actually her daughter Emmy Jones, a New Yorker basing the book on her late mother’s journals.
When the publishers announce they want to experience an authentic Australian ‘Clementine’ Christmas before signing the deal, Emmy must race back to the old family farm, roping in her cousin David (Hugh Sheridan) and his husband Miles (Nicholas Brown) to help maintain the ruse. One problem: London & London CEO Ellison London (Jeanette Cronin) shows up with her handsome adult son Jack (Darren McMullen) in tow – and if he remembers the night he met Emmy in New York, the game will be up!
Asmara Felk and Demi Harmon also star.

Stan has announced a slew of new local commissions as it ramps up ambitious plans to have around a third of its first-run slate come from original production.
These include Hoodlum Entertainment feature film Christmas on the Farm, Matchbox Pictures drama Bad Behaviour, and a number of projects with Roadshow Rough Diamond, with whom the Nine-owned streamer has extended its partnership. With the latter it is readying a third season of Bump and a spin-off, Year Of, as well as a Gregor Jordan-helmed crime drama, Ironside.
Last year, Stan flagged it intends to invest in more than 30 productions per year within five years, drawing on Nine’s production facilities and co-productions with international partners including Hollywood studios and international networks.
Earlier this month, the service announced a children’s feature film initiative with the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (Actf), and it has a lengthy list of upcoming local projects...

‘MasterChef Australia’.
Australia’s largest production houses and a number of independent producers have asked Prime Minister Scott Morrison for urgent funding to help the industry get back on its feet.
Among their proposals are an immediate cash injection of $200 million to the sector, administered by Screen Australia, to support a back-to-work plan, and doubling the Producer Offset for TV productions to 40 per cent for 12 months, starting from July 1.
Echoing widespread industry sentiment, they call for content quotas on all broadcasters, pay TV channels and SVOD services to preserve the volume of local content and increasing and harmonizing the rates of all Offsets.
This recovery plan is detailed in a letter to Morrison signed by the CEOs or MDs of Endemol Shine Australia, Easy Tiger, Fremantle, Goalpost Pictures, ITV Studios Australia, Matchbox Pictures and Warner Bros. Television Australia.

Released today, the Covid-Safe Guidelines developed by the Australian Screen Sector Task Force set the stage for an imminent return to screen production – but only after travel restrictions are eased and the insurance risk issue is solved.
The 41-page document is designed to help producers eliminate and minimise the risks associated with exposure of personnel to Covid-19 as production resumes.
The task force comprised reps of Screen Australia, Screen Producers Australia, the Meaa, Aftrs, state agencies, guilds, the ABC, Sbs, Ausfilm and a number of production companies.
Screen Australia CEO Graeme Mason said, “These guidelines are an essential tool to help the Australian industry get back to the business of creating world-leading screen stories. Whilst each production will need to have their own individual plan, we hope that the Covid-Safe Guidelines will help inform practitioners on what they need to be considering before they get back up and running.

Support Act.
Hoodlum Entertainment’s Nathan Mayfield was devastated when the pandemic forced a halt to filming the third season of the ABC’s Harrow and the second of Network 10’s Five Bedrooms.
Mayfield worried about the mental health and well-being of more than 400 crew and cast who were directly affected by the shutdowns, and their families.
So he was delighted when the Federal Government announced last week a $10 million funding package for music industry charity Support Act.
A good portion of the funds will be used to open up the Support Act Wellbeing Helpline to all members of the arts and screen industries.
Launched in June 2018, the helpline is a free, confidential phone counselling service dedicated to help those who are concerned about any aspect of their mental health and well-being.

Hoodlum Entertainment, Aurora Films’ Antony Waddington and Ákos Armont and Sweetshop & Green’s Sharlene George and Gal Greenspan are teaming up to produce an asylum seeker drama adapted from a 2018 book.
Kurdish-Iranian journalist Behrouz Boochani chronicled his harrowing experiences in the tome No Friend But The Mountains: Writing from Manus Prison.
Boochani fled Iran in 2012 after the newspaper he co-founded was raided by the Iranian government. He attempted to travel to Australia by boat from Indonesia but the vessel was intercepted and he ended up on Manus Island, where he spent nearly seven years.
He wrote the book, which details the riots which erupted in 2014, in Persian on WhatsApp on a contraband phone smuggled onto the island, which was subsequently translated into English by academic Omid Tofighian.
It has been sold to 19 countries and won a slew of awards including the Victorian Prize for Literature, which the author accepted via video link while in detention.

Disney TV Studios, which encompasses ABC Studios/ABC Signature, 20th Century Fox TV and Fox 21 TV Studios, is re-evaluating its UK presence and overall international strategy, according to Variety.
However the move may not have any immediate or even longer term impact in Australia. Hoodlum had renewed its first-look deal with ABC Studios International and Disney Media Distribution will handle sales of The Gloaming.

Michael Lucas and Christine Bartlett.
After years of creating fictional characters in such series as House Husbands, Offspring, The Wrong Girl and Playing for Keeps, Christine Bartlett allowed herself the freedom to do something unprecedented in Five Bedrooms.
Namely: To flesh out a character modelled on her own life and experiences.
Doris Younane plays her alter ego Heather in Hoodlum Entertainment’s 8-part comedy-drama co-created by Bartlett and her frequent collaborator Michael Lucas, which premieres on 10 at 8.40 pm on May 15.
The set-up director Peter Templeman describes Heather as “funny, complex and raw, and that’s Chris.”
Bartlett tells If: “Michael gave me permission to be totally unfiltered, so I went balls-out like never before. I was blown away watching what Doris did to bring the character to life.”
At the crossroads in her life, Heather is married to Colin (Alan Dukes), whom she says “peaked at high school,” and they have two doltish adult children.

Created by Michael Lucas and Christine Bartlett, the plot follows a group of very different people who find themselves at a singles table at a wedding.

Netflix's new series Tidelands is a first for the streaming platform: it's the inaugural Australian series to be exclusively produced and distributed on Netflix! The new fantasy mystery centers on a small Aussie fishing village where a mysterious death leads an investigator to discover that the townspeople are actually magical creatures: half siren, half human. It's an intriguing concept, but will we see a second season?
So far, nothing has been confirmed by either Netflix or the creative team, but Netflix's history with both international series and supernatural shows could be a clue. This is the first Australian Netflix original, but the platform has produced original series with several other countries, from Britain's The Crown to Spain's Cable Girls and Germany's Dark. These shows have had a range of receptions, but it seems like the more a show can make its own brand, the better it does. Tidelands'...

Those are among the key points that emerged from interviews with 25 Australian, Us and UK screen industry executives published in Swinburne Institute for Social Research.s new report TV 2025: Reconsidering small screen media in Australia.
ITV Studios Australia MD Anita Jacoby said, .In the current climate we simply can.t afford to have independent producers and distributors not working together.. Production companies, particularly like ours, [will] become one because the economic model will force you to become one, and I can.t see how that will change. All the smaller players will be absorbed by the bigger players,...
