Survivor has aired 44 seasons and has been on the air for almost 23 years. Throughout the CBS reality competition series’ run, there have been plenty of epic highs and a handful of disastrous lows as producers introduce new elements to the game. Some have completely changed the series for the better, while other Survivor twists long to be forgotten by the show’s fans.

We’re starting our ranking of the five worst Survivor twists by taking you back to the show’s twenty-first season, Nicaragua. Geo Bustamante couldn’t have been more excited to have secured himself the Knowledge Is Power advantage on “Survivor 43,” despite what he already (sorta) knew to be true: it’s a curse! Upon getting the advantage in Episode 5 he said, “This is what I came here for! I came to ‘Survivor’ to get an idol or to get an advantage. I’ve never seen anybody use the Knowledge Is Power successfully, but it’s a very powerful tool.” He went on to say he’d save it because he was certain he wouldn’t be voted out that night. Less than 15 minutes later, Geo was the fifth person voted out of the game.
With Geo’s finding of the advantage and subsequent elimination, he became the third of three players to hold the Knowledge Is Power advantage and not use it successfully. For Geo, finding the advantage wasn’t the curse,...

When Survivor returned to air following a 16-month post-pandemic delay, it ushered in a brand new, twist-tastic era: A 26-day game, more diverse casting and smaller tribes weren’t even the half of it. But when Season 43 kicks off Wednesday, Sept. 21 (at 8/7c on CBS), viewers and its castaways are in for some big changes.
While host Jeff Probst has been very clear about which aspects of this new era are sticking around — the shorter game, small tribes, risk/reward dilemmas, earning the merge and Shot in the Dark are all here to stay — he’s put the kibosh on...

We’re only a few weeks out from the “Survivor 42” finale where Maryanne Oketch clinched the 1 million prize arguably because of her Final Tribal Council revelation that she had kept the only secret in the game truly a secret: her unused hidden immunity idol. Jaws dropped on the jury and the players that may have otherwise been inclined to vote for Mike Turner to win instead chose Maryanne as the “sole Survivor.” Now, as we forward look to “Survivor 43” this fall, we want to know what you think about the advantages, twists and challenges currently at play in “Survivor” and which, if any, should stick around for the upcoming season.

If you’ve been going through “Survivor” withdrawals ever since the finale aired last Wednesday, you’re in luck. CBS has released a deleted scene that takes place immediately after Lindsay Dolashewich was voted out on Night 24. To recap, Maryanne Oketch had a hidden immunity idol that she was going to play for herself to secure her spot in the Final 4, but she didn’t need to because Mike Turner gave her his idol instead. Maryanne briefly flirted with the idea of handing her own idol to Lindsay, but decided not to. How come? Watch the “Survivor 42” deleted scene above to find out.

Lindsay Dolashewich finished in fifth place on Survivor Season 42, the second-to-last player added to the jury. Jonathan Young joined her as the last member after losing the fire challenge to Mike Turner, leaving Maryanne Oketch, Romeo Escobar, and Mike in the Final Three. Of all the players in the Final Five, Lindsay was the only one who succeeded in all aspects of the game. She won individual challenges, made strong strategic moves, and played a solid social game. Unfortunately, that made her a target. And she wasn’t able to clinch a victory in the last immunity challenge, finishing her puzzle just seconds behind the victorious Mike. She later pleaded to Mike to protect her with his idol, which he ultimately played on Maryanne, leading to Lindsay being the final person voted out of Survivor Season 42. Here, Lindsay tells TV Insider all about those Hail Mary strategic moves in the...

Maryanne Oketch is officially Survivor's season 42 winner. Following a grueling and emotional season, the jury voted for the 24-year-old seminary student in the May 25 finale. After revealing she had a secret immunity idol, Maryanne secured a vote of 7-1-0, beating out runners up Mike Turner and Romeo Escobar. Lindsay Dolashewich and Jonathan Young were also in the final five. While the Survivor contestants seemingly underestimated her throughout the entire season, Maryanne was confident she was going to come out of the tribal jury a victor, telling Entertainment Weekly, "I felt as if I probably was gonna win." After 26 hard-fought days and numerous twists and turns, “Survivor 42” officially has its champion. By a vote of 7-1-0, Maryanne Oketch was crowned Sole Survivor, winning the 1 million prize over fellow finalists Mike Turner and Romeo Escobar. This makes the 23-year-old seminary student the first Black woman since 2002 to win “Survivor,” joining Season 4 champ Vecepia Robinson. But do you think Maryanne deserved to win Season 42 or should someone else have taken the top prize? Vote in our poll below that includes the Top 3 finishers.
Maryanne spent much of the season as a fun presence, with a beaming smile to match her love of the game. While some of her tribemates admitted that her energy was a lot to take at times, she played enough of a strong social game to make it to the merge where she largely avoided being targeted thanks to bigger threats in the game. Maryanne Oketch pulled off arguably the most exciting move of the season last week on “Survivor 42” when she orchestrated the ouster of Omar Zaheer. She successfully utilized her extra vote to take him out with the help of only one other person, Romeo Escobar, resulting in a 3-2-2 vote. Romeo and Jonathan Young received those four other votes, and while both made for safer options to boot, Maryanne ultimately risked it all and took out the biggest player left in the game.

In our recent poll results, which asked fans to pick who they think deserved to be voted out last week, Omar received a sizable 58 of all votes. With the 30-year-old veterinarian secretly calling the shots for multiple post-merge votes, it only came to light after the previous Tribal Council that he was emerging as the biggest threat to win.

The 24-year-old seminary student from Ajax, Ontario leads our finale racetrack odds at 2/9, far ahead of our second place competitor, Lindsay Dolashewich, who trails at 23/2 odds. The Survivor Season 42 finale is here! The annual three-hour event premieres Wednesday, May 25 on CBS. In it, Maryanne Oketch, Jonathan Young, Romeo Escobar, Mike Turner, and Lindsay Dolashewich will have their last chances to impress the jury and win the 1 million. Survivor host Jeff Probst chatted with TV Insider about what to expect in the Survivor 42 finale, as well as how he has felt about the season — one of the most fun installments of the franchise in recent memory. Part of why it’s so much fun is because of the shortened format. The Covid-19 pandemic forced Survivor to shorten its seasons, resulting in 26-day competitions for the Seasons 41 and 42 casts. While a massive change from previous seasons, the shortened competition raised the stakes of the game and refreshed the series for longtime viewers. Survivor no longer guarantees food, punishes tribes for losing challenges, and throws in major plot-twist advantages.

For the second week in a row, the remaining castaways on “Survivor 42” took out one of the game’s strongest players. Drea Wheeler finally met her demise after collecting just about every possible advantage in the game up to that point, including a secret amulet, a Knowledge is Power advantage and an extra vote. The 34-year-old fitness consultant went out in rather spectacular fashion, using up two of her three advantages. Do you think Drea deserved to get the boot in this episode? Vote in our poll below, which does not include immunity winner Jonathan Young or Do Or Die survivor Lindsay Dolashewich.

Moments after Drea Wheeler exited the game laughing with all of her former competitors, Jeff Probst took a moment to praise the remaining Top 6 players. “I gotta say, just as a viewer, I can’t think of a season where I’ve ever seen this much fierce gameplay and camaraderie,” the host said. “This is the ideal way in my mind for ‘Survivor’ to be played. Because it is just a game. And it is just an adventure. And it’s an experience with people that you’re gonna know forever.” One week earlier, Hai Giang left the game in a similar positive fashion.

In a “Survivor 42” sneak peek video for the Wednesday, May 11 episode, Maryanne Oketch admits she’s having “so much fun” despite her toenail falling off. You read that right. When her fellow Top 7 castaways are sitting around killing time, she announces to the group, “Guys, I just lost my toenail.” The others are speechless at hearing that fact, particularly as Maryanne doesn’t seem to be upset at all. Why? Because apparently she loses her pinky toenails “pretty often,” she confesses. Watch the hilarious video above.

‘Survivor 42’ Top 7 power rankings: Drea Wheeler and Omar Zaheer are best positioned to win the game
Before his epic blindside, Hai Giang was looking very strong in the race to win “Survivor 42.” Now that he’s out, control of the game is truly up for grabs and (mostly) any of the remaining seven castaways have a path to the win. Drea Wheeler could advantage her way to the end or Jonathan Young could win every immunity challenge through to the final three. Maybe the personal connections Omar Zaheer and Mike Turner have made with everyone will actually pay off. Or just maybe Romeo Escobar, Maryanne Oketch and Lindsay Dolashewich can pull off some last minute resume-building tricks to earn points with the jury.

Despite playing one of the stronger strategic games of the season, Hai Giang was blindsided at the end of the May 4 episode of “Survivor 42.” The 28-year-old data scientist had been a core member of the majority alliance, helping to make crucial decisions on who to vote out, but one of those past decisions proved fatal for his game, as Omar Zaheer turned Hai’s closest ally, Mike Turner, against him. Do you think Hai deserved to be voted out at this point in the game? Vote in our poll below, which includes everyone except for immunity winner Lindsay Dolashewich.
Hai was riding high after last week’s episode, in which he persuaded Mike to betray Rocksroy Bailey, who they voted out unanimously. Mike clearly felt guilty about his decision, stating at the beginning of this week’s episode that he felt like he was playing Hai’s game more than his own.

Following the May 4 episode of “Survivor 42,” only seven castaways still have a shot of joining the show’s iconic winners list. Among them is Omar Zaheer, who’s angling to become the first castaway of Muslim faith ever to win “Survivor” after two decades and 41 seasons. As of this writing, the 31-year-old Ontario exotic animal veterinarian is tied for the #1 spot (with Maryanne Oketch) in Gold Derby’s “Survivor 42” predictions, which are determined by our readers.

“Survivor 42” viewers are split on the poll results of last week’s highly debated episode. The hour ended with two Tribal Councils, one of them booting Rocksroy Bailey in a blindside and the other taking out Tori Meehan nearly by process of elimination. While fans believed that Rocksroy deserved to be voted out, they were significantly less enthused with Tori’s ouster, believing another castaway should have been sent to the jury instead.

‘Survivor 42’ deleted scene: Jonathan Young reveals he ‘almost passed out’ from lack of food [Watch]
In this week’s “Survivor 42” deleted scene, Jonathan Young reveals he “almost passed out” on the island from a lack of food (watch above). Remember, this year the castaways are not provided with free rice by CBS — instead, they have to earn their sustenance through rewards or other means. The previously unseen moment comes on Day 17 after Jonathan’s group wins a food reward of beef and veggie kebobs. “Food has helped me think way more clear, play the game way harder and enjoy life,” Jonathan says in a confessional. “Because I gotta tell you, for 16 days I was not feeling great. I was getting to the point where I had to slow down from standing up. I almost passed out. But now that I have food, I feel so much better.”

One day after “Survivor” made headlines when two Black women, Maryanne Oketch and Drea Wheeler, openly addressed their feelings on racism and subconscious biases, Maryanne has thanked two of her white castaways for being allies. Lindsay Dolashewich and Tori Meehan “had every right to fight for their safety in the game once both idols were played,” Maryanne wrote on Instagram, “but instead, they chose to take a step back to actively listen to where I was coming from, and [empathize] with the burdens that I experience.” The 24-year-old seminary student from Ontario added that CBS’s reality TV show is at its core a “social game that is a microcosm of society.”

“Survivor 42” contestant Tori Meehan received one of the more unique exits in the show’s history in this week’s ninth episode. After the 10 players were divided into groups of five, the teams were instructed to attend separate Tribal Councils, with the order playing a major factor in Tori’s ouster. Tori and the rest of the orange group arrived at the second Tribal of the episode to see that Rocksroy Bailey had been surprisingly booted, which shifted plans so significantly that Tori saw her torch snuffed without a formal vote even taking place. Do you think Tori deserved elimination? Vote in our poll below.

In one of the most powerful tribal councils in the history of “Survivor,” two Black women — Drea Wheeler and Maryanne Oketch — stood up against racism at the end of the April 27 episode. The moment happened after host Jeff Probst split the remaining 10 players of “Survivor 42” into two groups of five. The first group voted out Rocksroy Bailey, making him the second Black person eliminated in a row after Chanelle Howell last week. When the second group entered tribal council, Drea and Maryanne both had strong reactions to seeing Chanelle and Rocksroy on the jury, and it sparked an entire discussion on racism and subconscious biases that went beyond the game.
Heading into tribal, Jonathan Young‘s plan was to boot out Drea because she had a hidden immunity idol (he wasn’t aware she actually had four advantages). But all bets were off after Rocksroy took a seat on the bench.

Chanelle Howell saw her luck run out at the end of Episode 8 of “Survivor 42,” getting the boot from her tribe and becoming the first member of the jury. The 28-year-old executive recruiter had been floundering since her first Tribal Council in the pre-merge, which caused her former allies to drift away from her, and she was never able to find herself in the majority again. She was ultimately voted out by seven of her tribemates, and fans ultimately agree that she was the right person to go.
In our recent poll, where we asked you to pick which player you think deserved to be voted out, Chanelle earned 46 of the vote. Ahead of the ninth episode of “Survivor 42,” which will air Wednesday, April 27, CBS has released a sneak peek video showing the formation of a brand new all-guys alliance. Rocksroy Bailey comes to Jonathan Young and Mike Turner with a plan for all of the remaining men to “stick together,” and Jonathan admits he’s “very interested” in the idea. “Everybody’s always after the big guy in ‘Survivor,'” Thor Jonathan proclaims in a private confessional. Tori Meehan makes ‘Survivor’ history by winning first 2 individual immunity challenges of the season
Over the course of the first 21 years and 41 seasons of “Survivor,” only one woman had won the first two individual immunity challenges of her season: Laura Morett in 2009’s “Survivor: Samoa.” Now, her long-standing record has been tied by Tori Meehan, who just claimed back-to-back victories in the first two individual immunity challenges of “Survivor 42.” Talk about girl power!
One caveat in mentioning this record is that Laura’s initial immunity win was actually awarded to the best performing male (John Fincher) and female (Laura) of that specific challenge. Tori didn’t have to share either of her two immunity necklaces, which puts her truly in a league of her own when it comes to making “Survivor” history.

This limited the pool of potential eliminations, with Lydia Meredith meeting her untimely demise. But do you think she was the right person to be the merge boot? Vote in our poll below.
