Sometimes you fancy the finest caviar known to humanity. Other times you fancy some greasy fish and chips. No Good Deed belongs in the latter category. It's an American thriller wrapped up in a day old newspaper, unashamedly devoid of artistic pretensions and providing a very palatable, unchallenging experience that rises above mediocrity thanks to a killer performance by Idris Elba.
The Luther star exudes a mesmerising sense of menace as Colin, described by a judge as a "charming, malignant narcissist", who escapes from incarceration, crashes his car and seeks refuge at a nearby house. He plays all innocent and nice to fool middle-aged mother Terry (Taraji P Henson) while her husband is away, but the arrival of her seductive (and thoroughly one dimensional) friend Meg (Leslie Bibb) threatens to trigger Colin's malevolence.

'No Good Deed' movie going unpunished to top weekend box office? (photo: Idris Elba in 'No Good Deed') Apologies for the bad wordplay above, but if Friday estimates are a reliable indicator, No Good Deed should indeed go unpunished to the top of the domestic box office this weekend, September 12-14, 2014. But why "unpunished"? Well, so far the Sam Miller-directed thriller starring four-time Emmy nominee Idris Elba (Luther) and Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nominee Taraji P. Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) has a downright putrid 10% score and 2.6/10 average among Rotten Tomatoes' top critics. Sony Pictures, whose subsidiary ScreenGems is distributing No Good Deed, reportedly opted to skip late Thursday screenings to ensure that the film's plot twist would be kept under wraps. More likely, however, it was the critics' derisive remarks that Sony wanted under wraps. For instance: "The final plot twist...

Screen Gems (Sony) released their new thriller film, "No Good Deed," into theaters this past Thursday, September 11th, and all the reviews are in from the top, major movie critics. It turns out that this film came far from resonating with them as most of them damn near hated it with an overall 27 score out of a possible 100 over at the Metacritic.com site. The movie stars: Idris Elba, Taraji P. Henson, Leslie Bibb, Kate del Castillo and Henry Simmons. We posted blurbs from a couple of the critics, below. Lindsey Bahr from Entertainment Weekly, gave it a 50 score, saying: "There's an intriguing premise buried in there that could have resulted in a smart look inside the mind of a malignant narcissist (which, the movie reminds us over and over again, was Jeffrey Dahmer's diagnosis too)." Dennis Harvey from Variety, gave it a 40 score, stating: "Ensuing action is tamely PG-13 in terms of graphic violence.

No Good Deed
Written by Aimee Lagos and Directed by Sam Miller
U.S., 2014
At times while watching No Good Deed it feels like the film is a test to see just how much of a creeper Idris Elba can be while still being popular with audiences. He plays ex-con Colin Evans, a violent man who loves nothing more than to toy with women. If at first it seems odd that Idris Elba is playing the typical B-movie criminal, it’s because he isn’t just going through the motions. The man who stole the show in Pacific Rim and recreated an icon in Mandela deserves a little more credit than that.
No Good Deed was directed by Sam Miller of BBC’s Luther and he knows how to take typical archetypes and work them around his leading man. Memorable villains like Hannibal Lector and Patrick Bateman are all too common for white actors,...

A rain-drenched summer evening turns into a deadly cat-and-mouse game for a devoted wife and mother when an escaped killer finds his way into her home in No Good Deed, a classic film noir thriller starring Oscar-nominee Taraji P. Henson and Golden Globe-winner Idris Elba.
Terry (Taraji P. Henson) left a high-level career as an assistant D.A. to become a stay-at-home mother of two, living a quiet suburban life in an upscale Atlanta community. One stormy night when her husband is out of town, Colin (Idris Elba), appears at Terry’s door claiming car trouble and asking to use her phone. Charmed by the charismatic stranger, she leaves him outside while she goes to get him a phone, but soon learns that no good deed goes unpunished.

After playing hard-boiled cop John Luther on the absolutely brilliant BBC series Luther, Idris Elba is stepping on the other side of the law for his next movie role, in this fall’s thriller No Good Deed (not to be confused with the plainly awful 2003 Samuel L. Jackson/Milla Jovovich crime thriller of the same name). Elba stars as a dangerous killer who, after staging a jailbreak, invades the home of a young mother (Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson) and threatens both her and her children. The mother, a District Attorney, is forced to pick up arms to defend herself against the intimidating intruder.
We’ve got the first trailer for the film today, and though it looks quite predictable, Elba’s presence may be enough to get me into the theater. He rarely goes for psycho roles, opting instead to play charismatic heroes (in films like Pacific Rim and...

Last year we saw Idris Elba take on some fantastical bad guys in Pacific Rim and Thor: The Dark World, and he even changed history as Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. But this year he's becoming a villain himself. However, he's not becoming a monster or a comic book villain, but rather a menacing man who weasels his way into a family's house after pretending to have some car trouble in No Good Deed. This looks like a typical home invasion thriller from this first trailer, but both Elba and Taraji P. Henson ("Person of Interest") seem to elevate this typical sort of story with their performances. Plus this film comes from Elba's "Luther" television series director Sam Miller, so that's cool. Watch the trailer! Idris Elba played late civil rights leader and South African president Nelson Mandela in one of his more recent roles, but in Sam Miller’s No Good Deed, Elba plays quite the opposite of the beloved political figure.

This review originally ran last November when 96 Minutes played at The St. Louis International Film Festival
Racism is never an easy topic to tackle in any medium, so when you add class warfare and the peer pressure of gang culture to the story, it triples the difficulty of pulling off a believable and sincere film. Against the odds, this is precisely what first time writer and director Aimee Lagos has accomplished with 96 Minutes. Inspired by true events, 96 Minutes is a story of four young lives, each of them on separate paths which violently collide.
Brittany Snow (The Vicious Kind) plays Carley, an upper-middle class hard-working white college student studying law. Evan Ross (The Family Tree) plays Dre, a young black man from a gritty part of town whose determined not to fall into the gangster life, despite retaining his friendship with Kevin, played by Jonathan Michael Trautmann, a 16-year old...

Brittany Snow, the blonde, blue-eyed beauty you probably remember best from crowd-pleasers like "John Tucker Must Die" and "Prom Night," is all grown up -- and if you don't believe us now, you will. With her latest flick, the dramatic thriller "96 Minutes," the 27-year-old actress proves that even though she's a bona fide triple-threat ("Hairspray," anyone?), she doesn't have to sing or dance to steal the show.
"96 Minutes" tells the story of four lives slammed together in one shocking moment, and explores how each individual deals with the situation at hand. Spoiler alert: Some deal better than others. We caught up with Snow to talk about carjacking, a capella singing and why she'll (probably) never be a lawyer.
What first drew you to this movie? It's a bit grittier than some of the projects you've done in the past.
Well, I initially got the script like four years ago and I loved it.

Michael Trautmann, David Oyelowo If “Crash” were re-cast and re-imagined as an Atlanta-set teen drama about a carjacking gone awry, it might resemble something like “96 Minutes,” a wan thriller whose reach for socio-economic/ethnic insight and relevance far exceeds its meager grasp. Below writer/director Aimee Lagos shares one her favorite scenes from her feature debut "96 Minutes," opening in select theaters this Friday. "96 Minutes" is on it’s face a story about a carjacking gone horribly wrong, but at it’s core it’s an exploration of four young characters – all very different on the outside and from completely different walks of life, yet whom are all struggling with many of the same issues emotionally that face so many kids as they come of age. These four characters are thrust into a situation that is way beyond anything they’re prepared to handle and in that heightened state of life and death they are forced to confront the big issues of who they are and who they will choose to become. The film is non-linear so as to highlight each of the four characters’ individual journeys and explore how even the most...

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson have both signed to star in No Good Deed – with a script from Aimee Lagos (who wrote and directed the incredibly strong 96 Minutes). It’s a cool project with a high concept kidnapping plot where a former District Attorney invites a stranger having car trouble into her home. There’s your good deed right there. No doubt it won’t go unpunished. The best part of the news is that Elba’s Luther director Sam Miller will be making this his return to directing after a decade away from the feature film camera. His attempts of the late 90s were, not great, but his television work has been both extensive and impressive. Hopefully this will be a solid partnership and a great film – which is aiming for a Spring start. It’s a safe bet that Henson will star as the former Da, but...

Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson are set to star in the thriller "No Good Deed" for Screen Gems and Rainforest Films says The Hollywood Reporter.
The story follows a former Da-turned-stay-at-home mom and her two small children who are terrorized and kidnapped from their home when she invites a good-looking mysterious stranger in to wait for help after his car ran off the road.

Any day that bears news pertaining to Idris Elba can’t be all bad, right? That was my line of thought upon reading Variety‘s story, wherein we learn that he and Taraji P. Henson are taking the lead in the new Screen Gems thriller, No Good Deed. Sam Miller — occasional helmer of Elba‘s BBC hit, Luther — will direct a script from Aimee Lagos that centers on “a former D.A turned stay-at-home mom and her two small children who are terrorized and kidnapped after she invites a handsome but mysterious stranger into their home to wait for help after his car runs off the road.”
So long as we can overlook the obvious absence of an original bone in that logline’s body, one could still agree with this writer’s sentiment that Elba and Henson are game enough to elevate any (potentially) underwhelming material to something that’s,...

Movie Viking/TV detective Idris Elba sure knows to strike when the iron's hot. The Golden Globe-winning star of Luther has just completed press commitments for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, and is gearing up for his newly announced role as a young Nelson Mandela in the biopic Long Walk to Freedom, which goes into production this summer. But this hasn't stopped the devastatingly dashing leading man from signing on to a gritty thriller set to shoot next month in Georgia. THR reveals Screen Gems has paired Elba with Oscar-winner Taraji Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) for the forebodingly-titled No Good Deed, directed by Sam Miller. Penned by writer-director Aimee Lagos (96 Minutes), the feature focuses on a former district attorney who has walked away from her career in criminal prosecution to become a full-time (presumably single) mom. However, her home and children are threatened by a charming stranger...

96 Minutes is the story of a carjacking and the separate stories of the four people involved. Based on true events she saw as a college student, Aimee Lagos’s directorial debut gives a gripping view into the lives and experiences of four very different young adults. If it’s possible to comprehend why someone would do the unthinkable – Lagos certainly presents some insight. Film Independent was able to talk with the filmmaker as 96 Minutes began its run at the Pan African Film Festival.
I know you’ve been in quite a few festivals but how is your Pan-African Film Festival experience going, so far?
Aimee Lagos: It’s been great. I went to opening night last night, which was fantastic, and the film was really good.
Which film did they screen for opening night?
Al: It was Think Like, what are they calling it? Think Like a Man.
We were talking about that movie,...

Jen Yamato over at Movieline has some brand new, exclusive stills from Christian Serratos’ (Angela in The Twilight Saga) new film, 96 Minutes. Enjoy the stills from the movie below:
Lagos: “Brittany Snow (Carley) and Christian Serratos (Lena) rehearse a long walk and talk scene where the two girls bond after Carley rescues Lena from a potentially painful run in with her ex.”
“Christian Serratos (Lena Martinez) delivers a great performance in this scene where she discovers her boyfriend with another girl.” — Aimee Lagos
96 Minutes is described as:
Four lives, one fateful night — tensions run high in this April’s 96 Minutes, in which two college friends (Brittany Snow and Twilight’s Christian Serratos) clash with a pair of Atlanta teens (Evan Ross and J. Michael Trautmann) after a carjacking gone wrong. Filmmaker Aimee Lagos makes her feature debut with 96 Minutes following her award-winning short Underground, again examining what happens when class and social lines collide; after the jump, Lagos takes us through 13 moments from the shooting of her film.
Go see all of Movieline’s exclusive images from 96 Minutes here.
These stills are great! You really get a feel for the movie just by looking through the stills and I really like the director commentary that goes with them.

It was a late night down at the Ballpark Hilton where Cinema St. Louis held their annual post-fest awards party for the St. Louis International Film Festival last night. The most coveted prize is the audience-choice award and this year it was a bit of a surprise when In Darkness was announced as the winner. The Descendants or The Artist both seemed like more obvious choices but Agnieszka Holland’s drama about Jewish refugees living in the sewers beneath in Nazi-occupied Poland apparently wowed St. Louis audiences enough to take home the prize. It was not a film that We Are Movie Geeks was able to review in our extensive coverage of the fest, but one we will certainly look forward to seeing and reviewing. The Artist received the second highest number of votes and was named “Best Foreign Narrative Feature”. Big congratulations to Cinema St. Louis. This was their...

Evan Ross (The Family Tree) plays Dre, a young black man from a gritty part of town whose determined not to fall into the gangster life, despite retaining his friendship with Kevin, played by Jonathan Michael Trautmann, a 16-year old white kid with a troubled home and dreams of becoming a gangster. Christian Serratos (Twilight Saga) plays Lena,...
