It’s time for a new episode of the Real Slashers video series, and with this one we’re looking back at a 2006 release that has built up a solid cult following, but still hasn’t drawn in as many fans as it deserves. The movie is Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (watch it Here), and you can find out all about it by watching the video embedded above!
Directed by Scott Glosserman from a screenplay he wrote with David J. Stieve, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon has the following synopsis: You know legendary maniacs Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and Freddy Krueger. Now meet Leslie Vernon, the next great psycho-slasher. Vernon, a good-natured killing machine, invites a documentary film crew to follow him as he reminisces with his murder mentor, evades his psychiatrist/nemesis, deconstructs Freudian symbolism, and meticulously plots his upcoming slaughter spree.

Having only just gotten into collecting Blu-rays within the last couple of years, I’ve become interested in the different ways some of these releases catch our attention as horror fans. Sometimes we get those movies that we’ve always loved and jump on immediately. Other times, we get the obscure films that might wind up being a hidden gem. And then there are those releases that remind us to revisit the movies we haven’t seen in years. Such was the case for me and the 2006 meta-slasher Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. I remember seeing the movie within a year or so of its release, enjoying it, but never really feeling the need for a rewatch until Scream Factory announced their Collector’s Edition.

Although it introduces a new horror villain, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon also co-stars Robert Englund, the actor behind one of the genre's most influential icons, and in a bonus feature clip from Scream Factory's recently released Collector's Edition Blu-ray, actress Angela Goethals discusses what it was like to work with a living legend on the 2006 film.

Shining a satirical ray of light on the horror genre is nothing new, as a number of films (both indie and mainstream) have done this for a few decades now, but only one (that I know of), Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, states that in its own cinematic world, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and Freddy Krueger actually existed. Don't believe me? Check out some Blu-ray clips from Scream Factory's Collector's Edition of Scott Glosserman's cult movie before it hits shelves on March 27th.

Trouble Is My Business with Brittney Powell. Co-written by actor/voice actor Tom Konkle, who also directed, and Xena: Warrior Princess actress Brittney Powell, Trouble Is My Business is a humorous homage to film noirs of the 1940s and 1950s, among them John Huston's The Maltese Falcon and Orson Welles' Touch of Evil. Konkle stars in the sort of role that back in the '40s and '50s belonged to the likes of Humphrey Bogart, Robert Mitchum, Dick Powell, and Alan Ladd. As the femme fatale, Brittney Powell is supposed to evoke memories of Jane Greer, Lizabeth Scott, Lauren Bacall, and Claire Trevor. 'Trouble Is My Business': Humorous film noir homage evokes memories of 'The Maltese Falcon' & 'Touch of Evil' A crunchy, witty, and often just plain funny mash-up of classic noir tropes, from hard-boiled private dicks to the easy-on-the-eyes femme fatales – in addition to dialogue worthy of Dashiell Hammett and, occasionally...

While in Austin at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival, I had the opportunity to catch up with a variety of folks responsible for the modern cult classic Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, which celebrated its 10th anniversary with several screenings as part of the fest’s midnight lineup. Those on hand for the interview included co-writer/director Scott Glosserman, co-writer/producer David J. Stieve, star Nathan Baesel, and co-star Ben Pace.
As it turns out, when you get a group of filmmakers who also happen to be great friends together in one room for an interview, things can get a little nutty. That being said, we have some great highlights from Daily Dead’s in-depth chat with the gang behind one of the more boundary-pushing genre films of the last several decades, including the risk involved with making Behind the Mask, the legacy of Leslie Vernon, how they...

With little over a month to go until Austin plays host to SXSW 2017 for another year, organizers of the annual showcase have announced that James Franco’s drama The Disaster Artist has been added to the stacked lineup.
Based on Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell’s non-fiction book The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, Franco’s passion project is set to recount the infamous story behind The Room, Tommy Wiseau’s widely-derided pic that has since gone on to become something of a cult classic. No release date has been set, but we know that the feature will be written and directed by Franco, who stars as the eccentric Wiseau, and features a cast comprised of Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Josh Hutcherson, Ari Graynor, Jacki Weaver, and former Community star Alison Brie. Bryan Cranston and Zach Braff are among those set to cameo.

Following the success of last year’s Dallas Buyers Club, director Jean-Marc Vallée returns with another high profile title and a big Hollywood star that should easily be this week’s Specialty Box Office go-getter, Wild. Starring Reese Witherspoon, who also produces with Bruna Papandrea under their Pacific Standard label, the Fox Searchlight title will open in a comparatively wider release by this weekend (it opened in NY and La Wednesday) than some of its more recent high-profile brethren including last week’s The Imitation Game or last month’s Foxcatcher. Liv Ullmann returns to the director’s chair after a long absence with her take on Strindberg’s Miss Julie with Jessica Chastain, Collin Farrell and Samantha Morton via Wrekin Hill Entertainment. IFC Films and Magnolia Pictures will each open features Comet and Life Partners respectively which have at their center two people in an intense relationship. And two...

As many of you know, I am a fan of Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. I also hope you know that they are still trying to raise funds in order to make the next installment. First they were doing preorders for the film, but now they have opened a store where you can buy Leslie merch. The video below was posted today on their Facebook page and it has Ben Pace (actor from the first film) comically telling you to buy some tiny hearts. Follow the link here, in order to connect to the store and buy something to help fund this (presumably) awesome film!

A month ago we got the first word on a new web series entitled "Nypdm" about a world where a pair of unusual detectives pull back the curtain of shadows and lies that surround the unnatural criminal underground of New York City. Now the first four episodes are available, and we have them for you right here to check out along with a few stills and an update provided to us by producer Monique Yamaguchi.
From the Press Release:
"Nypdm" is a new web series that revolves around an unusual unit of NYC police detectives who possess a unique connection to a dark underworld where monsters are real. Taking an "it takes one to know one" approach, Lt. Spiller (Natalie Turpin) heads a special group of cops who have much in common with the monstrous suspects they pursue with one key difference: They're the good guys.

IMDb, as well as Leslie Vernon's official Facebook page (yes, he has one) have announced the long-awaited sequel to 2006's Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, currently titled B4TM. No news on what it stands for. I had originally thought "Before the Mask", but the IMDb shows the cast including Angela Goethals and Ben Pace reprising their roles as Taylor and Doug, which makes a prequel somewhat unlikely in my opinion. Scott Glosserman returns as director and co-writer, with David J. Stieve writing the screenplay. Nathan Baesel will be returning as Vernon and genre fav Robert Englund will continue as Vernon's "Ahab", Doc Halloran.

'For Your Consideration' campaigns are everywhere this time of year. It is Awards Season after all. And with the Streamy Awards on its second year, the web series world seems to have firmly marked their calendars. Web networks like Revision3 have put up a Streamys "For Your Consideration" page to make it easy for fans of their shows. Even Star-ving co-star Corin Nemec has activated his 'fan army' into helping his comedy series take home some hardware. Other series have turned to video to drum up support, and fan submissions, like Elevator Show's Fyi video for actor Ben Pace and Broadway's Shoshana Bean's musical Fyi video for indie comedy The Battery's Down. But it isn't all a popularity contest, as public submissions only account for part of the process. With the deadline for public submissions this Friday (1/15), it then turns over to the International Academy of Web Television's (Iawtv) hands,...

Don’t know about other folks, but I Loved the 2006 horror spoof, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (spoof isn’t the best word choice, but a movie like Btm really is unclassifiable). Now there is word that our favorite homicidal maniac may be returning so Dread Central checked up with Leslie’s alter-ego to see if he might offer some information.
From actor Nathan Baesel himself, word is -- "We've been talking for about a year, and Scott [Glosserman] and David [Stieve] have fleshed out a pretty workable frame. Scott called about a month ago cracking himself up while relating the newest machinations he and Stieve had come up with. I have to say it feels like it's going in a direction that appeals to a lot of what I was wanting to do with Leslie and satisfies a lot of the conceptual elements that turn Scotty on while...
