Lucas Heyne’s feature directing debut Mope will have its world premiere later this month in the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival. Deadline has the first look at the movie co-written by Zack Newkirk and Heyne and produced by Parkside Pictures in association with Saxton Cinema & Uncooperative Pictures.
The drama is based on the true story of a real-life murder in 2010 at a San Fernando Valley porn company. That’s where Stephen Clancy Hill, a mope (slang for a wannabe porn star), who was living in the company’s warehouse at the time, went on a rampage with a sword when he was told he was fired. He eventually killed his friend and fellow mope Herbert Wong, who tried to intervene when Hill was attacking two others. Hill was killed in a standoff with police five days later.

Julia Roberts is so happy right now — and she not afraid to get cheesy about it.

We all know that those lovely folks over at The Asylum have a reputation for churning out low-budget, cash-ins of whatever the latest franchise or flavour of the month has currently hit the cinemas. From Transformers to The Avengers, you can be count on an Asylum production rearing its ugly head. That’s why I find it a tad confusing that Paul W.S. Anderson’s Pompeii got the Asylum treatment in the form of Ben Damaree’s imaginatively titled Apocalypse Pompeii. Did anyone even care for the original film? If this isn’t going to be the red headed step child, I don’t what is.

It starts like some kind of violent ballet: A semicircle of shirtless young men scream at something on the ground offscreen, in slow motion and without a sound, veins popping out of their necks like roided-out riverbeds. We can't see the object of their animalistic aggression, but that's not the point. Drunk on testosterone and plain old drunk, the hulking boys are not predators huddled over a zebra carcass; they're fraternity gentlemen. Welcome to Pledge Week.

Every year of movies seems to have a dominant theme. Half way through the year, it seems the focus is on artificial intelligence. It's well documented on the site of our fervent love for Alex Garland's Ex Machina that so eloquently dealt with the matter of A.I. and humanity's coexistence (read Brad's interview with Alex here). Heck, even Marvel touched on the subject with Avengers: Age of Ultron. Those are most fresh in our mind, but on June 16, Neill Blomkamp's Chappie will hit shelves on Blu-ray and DVD to remind moviegoers it was the first film to kick off the year of A.I. Of course, of the three, Chappie garnered less than stellar reviews (check out Brad's theatrical review). But just like the titular android, it's a flawed yet misunderstood piece worthy of reinspection. Part of the negative reception likely has to do with...

It looks like March is going to be a big month in VOD releases for genre fans, as there are a handful of great titles to keep an eye out for in the coming weeks. Several highly anticipated indie films are getting released, including It Follows, Spring, Faults and Backcountry, and there are also a handful of other fun films making their way onto digital platforms as well.
Here’s a rundown of what’s heading to VOD in March:
The Burning Dead (Uncork’d Entertainment)- 3/3
Written and produced by Jeff Miller and Jason Ancona (co-writers and producers of Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan), The Burning Dead pits a a horde of lava-filled zombies against a sheriff charged with the plight to rescue an estranged family from a volcano eruption. Amy Schumer and Bill Hader in TrainwreckPhoto: Universal Pictures With Sundance just wrapping up and Berlin starting up in a few days, we are now immersed in the year-long barrage of film festivals. One such festival in South By Southwest. A few weeks back they announced the first seven films of their program, including the opening night film Brand: A Second Coming. Today, they have revealed the rest of the features to be shown in March (except for the midnight program), and some of it has me very excited. The bigger titles announced do not do much for me. Paul Feig's Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, and the Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart starrer Get Hard leave a lot to be desired in terms of anticipation, as does a work in progress cut of Judd Apatow's latest film Trainwreck. I'm guessing an Apatow work in progress is probably around three and a half hours.

The second Hercules movie we’ve reviewed here in the space of a week, Hercules Reborn is a product of mockbuster kings The Asylum and unlike The Legend of Hercules, which told the story of Hercules discovering who he is, this iteration of the mythical hero’s take takes place after he kills his wife and children in a fit of madness and is now living in exile, banished for the murders. However when the bride of Arius, an officer in the Greek army, is seized during a bloody coup by a ruthless Greek general, the soldier turns to the legendary Hercules for help. Initially Hercules refuses, but when he sees this as a chance for salvation, he agrees to help Arius. Together they must battle the general’s army,...

Birthday shoutouts go to Douglas Booth (above), who is 22, Tom Hanks is 58, and Jimmy Smits is 59.
Robbie Amell has joined The Flash in a recurring role, playing Ronnie Raymond: “In the DC Comics mythology, Raymond is a man who bonds with another to form the nuclear powered super hero, Firestorm.”
Elisabeth Hasselbeck is not happy about Rosie‘s return to The View: “Here in comes to The View the very woman who’s spit in the face of our military, spit in the face of her own network, and, really spit in the face of a person who stood by her and had civilized debates for the time that she was there – coming back with a bunch of control, ready to regain The View with a seat at that table.”

We're just weeks away from its anticipated arrival on the big screen, and Disney released the final trailer for "Maleficent" this week!
Mixing in a little old school charm, the clip begins with a look at the animated "Sleeping Beauty" film from 1959 and slowly transitions into the currently production, which stars Angelina Jolie as the evil villain and Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora.
In related news, Miss Jolie opened up to Elle magazine about casting her daughter Vivienne as a young Aurora. "For young Aurora, they needed a child who wouldn’t be fazed by the Mistress of All Evil hissing 'I don’t like children' in her face. And my little Vivienne—we call her my shadow, because there’s nothing I can do to shake her. I can be tired, I can be grumpy, I can be in a terrible mood, and she doesn’t care. It’s ‘Mommy,...

It seems to me a kind of cruelty – a misuse of parental power – to raise a child solely on a cinematic diet of cheery animated animals, moral motor cars and fables of sisterly love. Such sunny stories foster optimism, anthropomorphism and an increased risk of jazz hands in later life. No, far better to nourish your offspring’s imagination with deeper darker fictions that dare to confront the creatures of their nightmares and let those interesting folk take centre stage. Anything to avert a future request for tap dance classes and stage school. Unabashed happiness can be an ugly, ugly thing.
For my generation, and many that preceded it, Disney’s Maleficent was such a creature. A menacing composite of every sorceress and dark queen who ever stalked a fairy tale kingdom – haughty, manipulative and ruthless with blood red nails and a penchant for arch-villain couture. Her horned headdress and...

Entertainment Weekly magazine just unveiled the cover for its latest issue, giving us a look at Angelina Jolie as the title character in the upcoming "Sleeping Beauty" spin-off, called "Maleficent." In addition to the cover, the magazine also released a photo of Jolie with her 5-year-old daughter Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, who co-stars in the movie. "We think it's fun for our kids to have cameos and join us on set, but not to be actors. That's not our goal for Brad and I at all," said Jolie. "But the other 3 and 4-year-old [performers] wouldn't come near me. It had to be a child that liked me and wasn't afraid of my horns and my eyes and my claws. So it had to be Viv." "Maleficent" is directed by Robert Stromberg and co-stars Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, and Juno Temple. It's set to hit theaters on May 30th. Photo: (click to...

Fairy tale reboots have been all the rage in Hollywood since dueling Snow White projects Mirror Mirror and Snow White & the Huntsman swept the box office back in 2012 and were swiftly followed by last year’s Jack the Giant Slayer, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and Oz the Great and Powerful. Major studios aren’t over the trend just yet, with films like fairy-tale modge-podge Into the Woods and a Cinderella reboot in the works, but the revisionist fairy tale we’re most looking forward to is definitely this summer’s Maleficent.
Set to hit theaters in May, the tale charts the origins of the Sleeping Beauty sorceress (embodied by Angelina Jolie) and examines her descent into evil. Speaking with EW, the actress recently shed some light on the challenges of playing such an iconic villain. Discussing the goals of the film, she explained:
“The exercise wasn’t how can we have fun with a villain?...

When Angelina Jolie told her kids she was thinking of playing the live-action version of Sleeping Beauty’s villainess in Maleficent, her six children all had the same response: No!
“They went, ‘She’s so scary!’” Jolie tells EW this week, in her first in-depth interview about the film (out May 30).
Only Vivienne, one of her and Brad Pitt’s youngest children, proved not to be scared by the intimidating black horns and icy cackle. The now-5-year-old even ended up playing a young version of Princess Aurora in the film (as seen in this exclusive new image). But that...

New photos from the upcoming live-action Disney film Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning and the young Vivian Jolie-Pitt, have been released.
Angelina Jolie On Acting With Her Daughter
Maleficent tells the story of the evil sorceress from Disney’s classic Sleeping Beauty (1959) uncovering how she became such an evil creature. Fanning plays a teenage Princess Aurora, and she certainly looks the part, but finding a young child to play a young Aurora proved much more difficult as all the children they met with were too afraid of Jolie in full Maleficent makeup.
In the end, casting Vivian, 5, in the role of young Aurora was almost a necessity, not an effort by Jolie to thrust her child into acting.
“We think it’s fun for our kids to have cameos and join us on set, but not to be actors. That’s not our goal for Brad [Pitt] and I at all.

Plus, Lari faces his father on Secret Lives, Will confronts an ex-lover on Nashville, Ste has his day in court on Hollyoaks and Salem’s gays have it out on Days.
Langford’s Picks and Pans
Secret Lives (Finland)
It’s nice to see that despite all the problems in their lives, Lari and Elias still find the time to be romantic and *gasp* have sex. Some other TV gay duos and possible duos should take note.
I’m also glad for some forward motion with this story, which was stalling for the past few weeks, and is something this show often does. Though I suspect it’s not going to go well between Lari and his father given that Illkea thinks that Elias ‘converted’ his son. My guess is that Lari’s wish that he and Elias live together permanently is going to become real. I did chuckle when...

Army Wives has added another recurring player as the show revamps itself in its seventh season. Brant Daugherty will appear as a recent West Point graduate and a love interest for one of the new Wives, according to Deadline. If Daugherty looks familiar to you, it might be because he appeared on Days of Our Lives as the guy who had an interest in Sonny just when Will wasn't sure how out he could be on? You know, the guy who made us question our loyalty to WilSon before that story could get going? (Our interview with Brant Daugherty here.)
As pilot season news continues, ABC is adapting another Britcom, this time hiring Rob Corddry to star in an adaptation of Spy, about a single father who accidentally gets hired by the secret service.

Those who managed to catch new SyFy b-movie horror flick 'Jersey Shore Shark Attack' over the weekend will be pleased (or saddened) to discover that it'll be arriving on Blu-ray and DVD across the Us from 28 August courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment. The kids from the 'Shore' certainly get more than they bargained for when their local beach is overrun with bull sharks hungry to feed on the flesh of over tanned simpletons. Jeremy Luc, Melissa Molinaro, Jack Scalia, Paul Sorvino, William Atherton, Tony Sirico, Joey Russo, Daniel Booko, Alex Mauriello, Audi Resendez, Grant Harvey, Dylan Vox, Joey Fatone and Ben Giroux all star and so don't forget if you missed out on its recent TV airing then make sure you catch it on Blu-ray/DVD later this Summer....

Tragically, the sharks eventually died of alcohol poisoning.
It was a given that Syfy's Jersey Shore Shark Attack would be a bad movie, but the question is ... is it a good bad movie? Surprisingly, yes, for the most part.
Thanks to a game cast, appropriately dumb dialogue, and some astoundingly bad special effects, it ends up trashy fun ... until it eventually wears out its welcome.
Jeremy Luc as "The Complication"
Things get off to an eye-rolling start as we meet the lead characters, the excruciatingly named The Complication (Jeremy Luc), Nooki ( Melissa Molinaro), Pauly Balzac (Daniel Booko), and Donnie (played by Joey Russo, who mugged Meg Foster for her eyes).
Fortunately, the level of satire rises a notch after that cringe-inducing roll call.
The Guidos get into the typical Jersey Shore shenanigans (they're after A.S.S. "Alcohol, Sun, Sex"), but because this is family-friendly Syfy, it stays at a...
