Showrunners are the creative visionaries of a series.
They might not be the original creators, but they cover all aspects of the creative elements, evolve the show's vision, and decide where the story and character arcs will go.
They run the writing rooms, head the development, hire writers, and ensure actors are kept happy and that the budget is not exceeded.
Series are usually a collective effort, with writers giving their thoughts, but showrunners have the final say and are essential.
Where would the industry be without people like Shonda Rhimes, Matt and Ross Duffer (Stranger Things), and Ryan Murphy?
It would be mundane and repetitive.
Intelligent and prolific showrunners are the difference between a hit and a flop.
They set an unwavering tone for their ideas, and consistency is vital.
If the reason you fell in love with a series is altered or gone one day, then the connection created is absent,...

Miranda Cosgrove is recalling an interaction she had with a young iCarly fan that didn’t necessarily go as expected.
During an appearance on Wednesday’s episode of Live With Kelly and Mark, host Kelly Ripa noted how the 30-year-old actress and singer had “not changed very much” since her debut acting role in 2003’s School of Rock at age 9.
“I do sometimes [get recognized],” Cosgrove said in response. “It’s funny because there was a moment when a lot of young kids didn’t really know who I was because [iCarly] hadn’t been on for a while. Then, Netflix got the show and they started playing the old seasons.”
The Mother of the Bride actress went on to recall an encounter she had with a young fan during a recent Target shopping trip.
“There’s a little boy just kind of looking at me in the toy aisle. He kept looking up at me.

Steve Burns, who became an icon of children’s television as the host of Nickelodeon’s “Blue’s Clues” from 1996 to 2002, recently spoke to “Today” and said he watched the viral documentary series “Quiet on Set” in “horror and heartbreak.” The ID Discovery series explores the alleged harassment and abuse that took place at Nickelodeon before and after the turn of the century, which is the same time Burns was the face of “Blue’s Clues.”
“I don’t have any particular insight into any of that,” Burns said about the allegations made in the documentary series. “I’m coming to it much the same as anyone else, with horror and heartbreak. It’s just terrible to watch it unfold. I don’t know what else to say, other than that it’s heartbreaking.”
An abundance of the allegations made in “Quiet on Set” revolve around Nickelodeon mega-producer Dan Schneinder and acting coach Brian Peck.

The curtain has been lifted, and the scene is grim.
Fans of Nickelodeon smash hits like All That, The Amanda Show, and Drake & Josh have been left reeling after learning that the shows that entertained us as children were shrouded in dark secrets.
At the center of it all is Drake Bell, the teen heartthrob turned troubled young adult whose devastating story was laid bare on Quiet on Set.
The chilling docuseries alleged years of abuse by Dan Schneider, the mastermind behind many of Nickelodeon's most popular television shows aimed at children and teens.
It wasn't just Dan — some of the most egregious allegations were aimed at the several convicted pedophiles who worked on those same shows.
There's an overwhelming sense of guilt that comes along with the revelations from Quiet on Set.

The horrifying new Investigation Discovery docuseries "Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV" will release an additional episode in early April, according to Variety. The series' first four episodes dropped on ID and Max less than two weeks ago, but have already been viewed by an audience of 16 million people, per the outlet. They've also inspired countless tough conversations about their dark subject matter -- the abuse and mistreatment of multiple child stars and crew members behind the scenes during the heyday of Nickelodeon.
"Quiet on Set" includes interviews with former Nick stars and others who witnessed the reportedly toxic work environments on Nickelodeon shows dating back to the network's early days. Prolific producer Dan Schneider (who was an unnamed but sinister figure in Jennette McCurdy's 2022 memoir "I'm Glad My Mom Died") is at the center of the show's conversations about sexism and mistreatment. McKenna Grace reprises her lead role as Phoebe in “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” which led the weekend box office with $45 million. At 17 she is not yet a household name, but she laid some groundwork early: At age six she had a supporting role on the Disney Channel sitcom “Crash & Bernstein.” Later she received an Emmy nomination for her work in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and portrayed the younger selves for the leads in movies like “I, Tonya” and “Captain Marvel.”
Her “Ghostbusters” co-star is Finn Wolfhard, who made his debut at 13 in CW’s “Supernatural” before starring in “Stranger Things” and “It.” Zendaya, star of “Dune: Part Two,” got her start as a Disney Channel regular. Her co-star, Oscar-nominated Austin Butler, cut his teeth at Nickelodeon.

TV producer Dan Schneider has issued a new response to an Investigation Discovery docuseries that uncovers the toxic and dangerous culture on the sets of his Nickelodeon children’s shows in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The first two installments that dropped Sunday were meant to reveal “an insidious environment rife with allegations of abuse, sexism, racism, and inappropriate dynamics with its underage stars and crew,” according to ID.
The next two episodes air tonight.
“Dan expected and asked a lot from his teams,” according to a statement obtained by Deadline. “They worked long hours and consistently made successful shows. In the challenges of production, Dan could get frustrated at times, and he understands why some employees found that intimidating or stressful. In a career spanning 30+ years, Dan worked with thousands of people, many of whom still tell him how much they enjoyed and appreciated working on his shows.

Jennette McCurdy hasn't always made space for her more difficult feelings.
"I realized I had so much judgment around my emotions, which just made it more difficult to actually accept them and process them," she tells Popsugar. "I had so much self-loathing around difficult emotions because of thinking that there were only a few acceptable ones. I thought, 'You're supposed to be happy and grateful all the time. That means you're a good person.' So I would just pretend to be that, and if I felt anything else, I'd punish myself."
Over the years, the author, whose raw and powerful memoir, "I'm Glad My Mom Died," has spent more than 60 weeks as a New York Times bestseller since its publication in August 2022, has realized that berating herself for having strong feelings didn't exactly work for her. Now, she's making space for her emotions in a...

So long Carly: Paramount+ has decided not to renew the revival for a fourth season.
“The series had a great three-season run and delivered on what fans really wanted to see with Carly and Freddie finally getting together,” said a Paramount+ spokesperson. “We want to thank the entire cast, the writers, directors and producers along with the whole crew for their dedication, creativity and talent.”
iCarly stars Miranda Cosgrove as Carly, Jerry Trainor as Spencer, Nathan Kress as Freddie, Laci Mosley as Harper and Jaidyn Triplett as Millicent. The revival launched in June 2021. It picked up nearly 10 years after the original Nickelodeon show ended, finding Carly, the original influencer, and her friends navigating work, love and family now as adults.
The original iCarly series, produced by Nickelodeon, ran from 2007-12. Starring Cosgrove, Trainor, Kress and Jennette McCurdy, it followed a group of best friends creating a webcast while grappling with everyday problems and adventures.

For much of television history, sitcoms were done in the multi-camera, laugh-tack format. A live studio audience would chuckle along with the sometimes funny, but often not, jokes that network television writers would spoonfeed to actors to deliver weekly. The setting was usually a stage that was easy to move when it was time to go to a different room or location in the story, with on-location shoots being too expensive for most sitcoms to take advantage of.
All of these descriptors remained in children’s television sitcoms as well. Most of them were simplistic in nature, low-budget, and not exactly risky in their storytelling. Nickelodeon shows like Drake & Josh, The Amanda Show, and Kenan & Kel were all effective for what they were trying to accomplish, but they certainly didn’t break boundaries when it came to the way we thought of teen television storytelling.

Dan Schneider is responsible for some of Nickelodeon's most popular shows. After starting his career in supporting onscreen roles in "Better Off Dead" and "Head of the Class," he began writing and producing the sketch comedy show "All That" in 1993 and eventually left to run "The Amanda Show" starring Amanda Bynes. He went on to launch "Drake & Josh" in 2004, followed by "Zoey 101," "iCarly," "Victorious," "Sam & Cat," "Henry Danger," and "Game Shakers," among others.
But in March 2018, his massively successful tenure at the network ended suddenly. A joint statement from Nickelodeon and Schneider read, "Following many conversations together about next directions and future opportunities, Nickelodeon and our longtime creative partner Dan Schneider/Schneider's Bakery have agreed to not extend the current deal," per The New York Times. The video that changed Alaya High’s life is, by production standards, rather elementary.
Shot on a phone, handheld at a slightly off-kilter angle, it shows the tiny 11-year-old girl as she sits in the passenger seat of her father’s car. It looks, in fact, like the sort of video every parent has taken in the spur of the moment. Footage fired off to a spouse or a grandparent, meant for a space no more public than a group chat, destined for an emoji reaction or, if the recipient is feeling generous or a little bored, a follow-up question. The content, though, is pretty extraordinary.

Since she first appeared in "E.T." when she was just 7 years old, Drew Barrymore has been a beloved fixture in the entertainment industry. Films like "Never Been Kissed" and "Charlie's Angels" solidified her star power, and she's started a new chapter as the host of "The Drew Barrymore Show," which kicked off in September 2020.
Over the years, Drew's candid, vulnerable conversation style has helped her interviews stand out on her talk show. She's been able to connect with people like Brooke Shields about the sexualization they both faced as child stars, and in particular, Drew's openness about the struggles she faced with her parents during her youth has allowed her to bond with stars with similar backgrounds, like Jennette McCurdy.

In a fiery video Monday night, Drew Barrymore called out media outlets like Fox News that misrepresented comments she made during a recent interview, in order to falsely claim that she wished her mother dead.
“You know what, to all you tabloids out there, you have been f—ing with my life since I was 13 years old. I have never said that I wished my mother was dead. How dare you put those words in my mouth,” the actress and talk show host said in the clip, posted to her Instagram account.
“I have been vulnerable and tried to figure out a very difficult, painful relationship while admitting it is difficult to do while a parent is alive, and that, for those of us that have to figure this out in real time, ‘cannot wait,’ as in they cannot wait for the time that the parent is dead,” Barrymore elaborated.

Drew Barrymore was just 6 years old when she first met director Steven Spielberg during a casting for 1982's blockbuster hit "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial." Little did she know, the audition would not only lead to her breakout role as an actor but a long-lasting friendship with Spielberg. In an interview with Vulture published on June 5, the 48-year-old actor said Spielberg was "the only person in my life to this day that ever was a parental figure."
Barrymore, who's been open about growing up with uninvolved and abusive parents, apparently asked Spielberg if he could be her dad while they were working on "E.T." together, but he declined. So then she asked if he could be her godfather, and he said yes. Spielberg also went to great lengths to conceal the realities of a film set for Barrymore after she noticed men operating the alien behind a wall and she asked him to kick them out.

Jada Pinkett Smith is hopeful that her long-running Facebook Watch show, "Red Table Talk," isn't coming to an end. Pinkett Smith; her daughter, Willow Smith; and her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, have hosted the show since 2018, and the series has platformed some internet-breaking conversations with celebrities since then. But on April 26, news broke that Meta (Facebook's parent company) was canceling all of its Facebook Watch originals, including "Red Table Talk." Deadline first reported the news.
Pinkett Smith addressed the news in an Instagram statement on April 27. She wrote, "We are so grateful to have had such a beautiful partnership with Facebook Watch and we are sorry to see the entire team disbanded. We wish everyone well in their new journeys to come."

Meta is shutting down its Facebook Watch original programming, a company spokesperson confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter, leaving the future of shows like Red Table Talk in limbo as production company Westbrook Studios shops around the talk show for a new home.
The shuttering of the Facebook Watch originals division, first reported by Deadline, comes as Meta implements wide-ranging cost cuts across the company, with the most recent including a round of layoffs that is expected to impact 10,000 employees. Included in the cuts is Mina Lefevre, the former MTV executive who led development and original programming for Facebook Watch.
One of Facebook Watch’s most well-known shows was Red Table Talk, the talk show co-hosted by Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith and Adrienne Banfield-Norris. The series had five seasons on Facebook Watch and led to a spinoff series, Red Table Talk: The Estefans, with Gloria Estefan, Emily Estefan and Lili Estefan.

"One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated!" These are the immortal words that begin the song "Making Our Dreams Come True," the catchy tune used as the theme song of the popular series, "Laverne & Shirley." Cindy Williams, the actress who played the perky and positive albeit meek Shirley Feeney, has sadly joined her co-star Penny Marshall, passing away at the age of 75. Williams' children Zak and Emily Hudson confirmed the passing with the Associated Press following a brief illness.

A movie sequel to “Zoey 101,” the 2005 Nickelodeon series starring Jamie Lynn Spears, is coming to Paramount+.
The streamer announced the film, tentatively titled “Zoey 102,” on Thursday. The movie, which will premiere on Paramount+ later this year, stars Spears and several former cast members of the series, including Erin Sanders, Sean Flynn, Matthew Underwood, Christopher Massey, Abby Wilde, and Jack Salvatore.
The original series, created and executive produced by Dan Schneider, aired for four seasons from 2005 to 2008 and focused on Zoey, a middle schooler who attends boarding school at the fictional Pacific Coast Academy in Southern California. The film will focus on a reunion between Zoey and her friends at a wedding.
Although “Zoey 101” was popular during its original run, receiving an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Children’s Programming for its first season, accusations about on-set drama during the series’ production have made the show’s revival a dicier proposition.

Although “Zoey 101” was popular during its original run, receiving an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Children’s Programming for its first season, accusations about on-set drama during the series’ production have made the show’s revival a dicier proposition.

It's officially the best time of year for music-lovers. Spotify has released its 2022 Wrapped experience, and audio enthusiasts are already flocking to the streaming app to find out what their most-streamed songs mean about their personalities. But it's also time to see what the most-streamed songs of the year globally say about humanity as a whole - or about Spotify's 456 million listeners across 184 countries, at least.
Along with personalized playlists for all its users, Spotify also revealed its lists of 2022's most-streamed songs, albums, and artists on Nov. 30 as part of Spotify Wrapped. While 2021 packed some surprises, like music newcomer Olivia Rodrigo snagging the most-streamed song of the year with "Drivers License," 2022's lists were a bit more predictable, with long-established top artists holding down prime spots on the top lists.
Harry Styles ruled 2022; the lead single of his album "Harry's House," "As It Was," was the year's most-streamed song globally.

Holiday season is upon us, and with that comes the arrival of Spotify Wrapped, the audio giant’s annual data bonanza that honors the most-streamed artists and packages users’ listening habits into fun graphics to laugh and cringe at.
This year’s Wrapped, which analyzed listener data between January 1 and November 26, saw the return of The Joe Rogan Experience and Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy — both of which are exclusively licensed to Spotify — as the first and second most popular podcasts around the world, respectively. Newcomer Emma Chamberlain, whose podcast Anything Goes will become exclusive to Spotify beginning next year, took over the No. 3 spot on the global podcast list, followed by the Spotify Original series Caso 63, which was recently adapted into English with Oscar Isaac and Julianne Moore. Rounding out the global podcast list was Ashley Flowers’ Crime Junkie, which was...

Keke Palmer delivered all the laughs on Tuesday night as the host of the annual Time 100 Next gala, which honored 100 rising stars who are shaping the future of their fields.
“This is like a high school reunion but only the successful people showed up,” Palmer quipped during her opening monologue.
On the red carpet before the dinner event began, the “Nope” star expressed interest in headlining her own original studio comedy.
As for who she’d like to grace the big screen with, Palmer told Variety, “I would love to be in something with my girl Melissa McCarthy. I think me and Adam Sandler can make way. If Will Smith’s ready to go back to do some comedies, I’m ready.”
Palmer went on to give a passionate elevator pitch of a comedy she’d like to do with Smith, which would be in the same vein of the 1989 rom-com “Look Who’s Talking.
