Judging from the trailer, or the poster, Zach Cregger’s Barbarian seems to follow a classic horror movie premise, updated for the tech age: A young woman checks in to an Airbnb in Detroit, only to find a man — and assorted terrors — waiting inside. But that’s just a fraction of the story.
Halfway through the film, which opened at No. 1 for the Sept. 9-11 weekend, writer-director Cregger abruptly cuts away from a gasp-inducing moment, jumping from dank Detroit to sunny L.A., where a hotshot actor played by Justin Long is cruising in a convertible without a care in the world. That is, until he gets a call from his agent telling him he’s been accused of sexual misconduct in The Hollywood Reporter.

Keith Dewar and Kristine Killingsworth recap the latest episode of Mafs. Pic credit: @kay_kills/Instagram
As Season 15 of Married at First Sight continues, many of the show’s past participants are sharing their thoughts on the new couples.
Keith Dewar and Kristine Killingsworth are the latest alums who are revealing who they are concerned about and who they believe still have a shot at salvaging their relationship.
The duo were stars of Season 8 which took place in Philadelphia. The season was the first time the show increased the number of couples from three to four.
Keith and Kristine initially struggled in their marriage. They had common disagreements about finances, intimacy, and where they wanted to live.
The couple also struggled with managing the very different schedules their jobs required of them. However, they found enough commonality within each other, and decided to continue working on their relationship.

Stars: Georgina Campbell, Justin Long, Bill Skarsgard, Matthew Patrick Davis | Written and Directed by Zach Cregger
Georgina Campbell and Justin Long star in this twisted horror from writer-director Zach Cregger, about an Airbnb hiding a sinister secret. Cleverly structured, superbly acted and deeply creepy, it’s a dark-hearted tale that will make you think twice about booking that holiday apartment.
Barbarian‘s opening hook is immediately compelling. Twenty-something Tess arrives at her Airbnb in a rundown Detroit neighbourhood to discover there’s been a booking mix-up and a strange man, Keith (Bill Skarsgard), is already staying there. Having no other option – it’s late, local hotels are all booked up due to a medical convention, etc – Tess accepts Keith’s seemingly kind offer of taking the room while he sleeps on the couch, but she’s still cautious enough not to accept the drink he gives her.
However, when she...

"Barbarian" has quietly emerged as one of the biggest surprises of 2022. Written and directed by Zach Cregger, the subversive horror film centers on Tess (Georgina Campbell), a woman who rents an Airbnb ahead of a job interview in Detroit, only to find the house has been double-booked by a fellow named Keith (Bill Skarsgård). To say too much more would be to spoil the fun for those who've yet to see the movie (which you absolutely should asap), so I'll leave it at that.
In terms of its influences, "Barbarian" feels practically tailor-made for the current era of horror, in which filmmakers like Jordan Peele have come to fame making movies that blend imaginatively creepy imagery with biting humor and sharp social commentary. It's also a film that's hyper-aware of where the horror genre is at right now, flipping common tropes on their heads, embracing an unorthodox narrative structure, and...

This article contains spoilers for "Malignant" and "Barbarian."
I went into "Barbarian" knowing nothing about the film beyond its logline and main cast. Dear reader, believe me when I tell you it was the best way possible to enjoy writer and director Zach Cregger's horror movie, a subversive take on the genre where the red herrings and misdirection are virtually indistinguishable from the actual foreshadowing. I would say I can't remember the last time a film took me on such a wild and unpredictable ride, but that isn't true. It was almost exactly a year to the day ago when the gonzo, go-for-broke swing that is James Wan's "Malignant" came out.
Both "Malignant" and "Barbarian" center on people who, when the films begin, are stuck in toxic situations. In "Malignant," Annabelle Wallis plays Madison, a pregnant woman who has had multiple miscarriages and is married to an abusive husband.

This article contains major spoilers for "Barbarian."
When you rent an Airbnb, the most important step of booking the place is making sure everything is on the up and up. You never really know what's lurking in the corners of someone else's abode, after all. Once you take the gleefully twisted roller coaster ride that is "Barbarian," however, you're going to thoroughly inspect every crevice of the place, if not outright cancel any standing reservations.
It's become partly cliche to say that a movie like "Barbarian" will have a cultural effect in the same way "Jaws" did with water, but I challenge anyone currently staying in an Airbnb property to witness this movie and not think about packing your bags immediately after you get home from the theater.
Director Zach Cregger ("Miss March") is a certified madman. This is one of those rare cases where minimalist marketing was a smart...

One of the most downright surprising studio movies of 2022 has arrived in the form of "Barbarian," the latest from Disney's 20th Century Studios. The film comes from writer/director Zach Cregger, and it serves as one of the first major horror releases of the fall season as we gear up for Halloween. But it was hard for anyone to imagine what they were in for, as the trailer (fortunately) gave very little away other than the film's basic set-up. By the time we get to the third act, there is a great deal to discuss, and that is precisely what we're here to do today.
The ending of this film warrants a great deal of conversation, to say the least. So we're going to break down exactly what happens and what it all might mean. But be warned, we're going to take a trip to spoiler country, and that is...

"Barbarian" is the new horror movie released by 20th Century Studios, written and directed by first-timer Zach Cregger. If you've seen it, you'll know it's a chaotically insane movie with one surprising, messed-up twist after another and more than a few "wtf" moments. Critics, including our own Ryan Scott, are raving about how bonkers it is, with the main sentiment being that it's best to go into the theater knowing nothing about the film to be completely surprised by its wild turns.
The premise is simple enough. A young woman named Tess (Georgina Campbell) travels to Detroit for a job interview and rents an Airbnb-style house only to discover it's already been rented to an awkward young man named Keith (Bill Skarsgård). She ends up deciding to stay in the house with him, and everything sort of goes crazy from there, with the trailers giving away the fact that something...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not seen “Barbarian.”
“Barbarian” is one of the year’s most-discussed horror films, largely because of some wild twists that were not spoiled in the trailers. That said, many of the movie’s biggest moments merit discussion beyond screams of “Wtf!,” and director Zach Cregger broke them down for Variety.
The movie’s first act is its most conventional, as Tess (Georgina Campbell) accidentally double-books an Airbnb for the same period of time as charming stranger Keith (Bill Skarsgård). She can’t find other lodging in this rough part of Detroit… should she stay the night? From there, Tess’ fear spirals as she creeps down into the hidden underground tunnels under the house, and runs into mutant woman known as The Mother, who savagely kills Keith right in front of her. It’s the Airbnb experience created from the stuff nightmares are made of for a young woman who discovers the short-term rental home she’s about to stay in is double-booked in the horror film Barbarian.
Tess, a documentary researcher, arrives late at night at the Airbnb she rented while in Detroit on a job interview. Stuck out in the pouring rain, she discovers that the key to the house is not in the lockbox. And, much to her surprise, someone is already in the house.
Keith comes to the door half asleep and informs Tess that he booked the house and has the paperwork to prove it. He invites her in out of the rain, and she reluctantly enters to compare their reservation confirmations.
Tess and Keith quickly realize that the company they went through must have accidentally double-booked the house.

Writer/Director Zach Cregger’s Barbarian goes full-throttle on unpredictable, edge-of-your-seat horror (read my review here). Releasing in theaters on September 9, Barbarian stars Georgina Campbell as Tess and Justin Long (Drag Me to Hell, Tusk) as Aj. Both characters get caught up in a rental nightmare beyond imagination.
Ahead of the release, Bloody Disgusting spoke with the actors about joining the cast of one visceral, unhinged horror movie.
Long is no stranger to horror and has demonstrated a fearlessness for playing more daring roles, like his divisive character in Kevin Smith’s Tusk. When asked about what it was that drew him to Barbarian, the actor answered, “It was the script. It was how well-written the script was. I had never read a horror script like that. You mentioned Tusk; it was like that.
“I remember having that experience. But this one subverted the genre in such an interesting way...

“Barbarian” is nasty. Whether you take that as a positive or a negative will be an entirely personal thing, but it’ll be a word that people on both sides of the opinion aisle will likely use to describe it. Georgina Campbell plays Tess, a young woman visiting Detroit for a job interview. She turns up at the rental home late at night only to find out that someone is already staying there, Bill Skarsgard‘s handsome and disarming Keith.

Imagine showing up for an Airbnb rental, only to discover that another guest is already there. What would you do? Check in anyway and hope for the best? Or take the mix-up as a sign and get the heck out? In “Barbarian,” Tess (Georgina Campbell) makes the wrong decision. It’s already late, and she decides to stay — this despite the fact that the stranger sharing the house is played by Bill Skarsgård (the actor who embodied Pennywise in the recent “It” remake). For audiences, this casting is a clue Tess is in for a scary stay. But it would be wrong to think you have “Barbarian” figured out.
For Tess, there are plenty of other red flags in the way her unexpected roommate behaves. Should she really believe they double-booked the same place in a derelict Detroit neighborhood? Or is there another reason he’s there? What if he...

Nothing says "stranger danger” like showing up at an out-of-town Airbnb in the middle of a downpour, finding entry into the rental blocked, the owners unavailable to take your frantic phone call, and someone else already inside, enjoying the warmth and the comfort that contractually belongs to you. It’s enough to make Tess Marshall (Georgina Campbell), the leading character in writer-director Zach Cregger’s feature-length debut, Barbarian, bolt from the premises and back into the dark. Except, of course, it’s late, she’s tired, and she has a potentially life-changing job interview the next morning in downtown Detroit with a documentary filmmaker. Besides, the stranger in question, Keith (Bill Skarsgård), seems to anticipate and counter every objection Tess can possibly make even as she warily decides to...

Any horror movie worth its salt is anchored by its performances. Script, cinematography, production design, score — all those things play a major part, of course, and you obviously can't make a film without them. But to make things really pack the punch necessary to be effective in the genre, you need top-notch actors who can take us there. Enter Georgina Campbell and Justin Long, two of the leads in the upcoming horror-mystery "Barbarian." The pair bring a nuanced sense of character to two fairly stereotypical archetypes in this film, and their command of those personas give the movie a firm foundation on which to build its absolutely bizarre and terrifying story.
"Barbarian" follows Campbell's Tess, a woman who, upon arriving at an Airbnb she rented in Detroit, finds a man named Keith (Bill Skarsgaard) already staying there. Against her better judgment, she decides to stay the night at the house,...

The power of a well-placed needle drop is something writer/director Zach Cregger clearly understands. After honing his chops as part of the comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U’ Know, which aired a sketch show for five seasons in the late aughts, Cregger has set his sights on horror. As Jordan Peele proved with aplomb, comedy and horror are two very different sides of the same coin, both using absurd premises to elicit physical reactions from their audience. For his clever horror thriller “Barbarian,” Cregger clearly took a page from the Peele playbook. With a chillingly relatable Airbnb setup, It’s no “Get Out,” but it’s a hell of a lot of fun — with a little something to say as well.
Opening with a bang, “Barbarian” starts on the edge of sinister and barrels toward the darkness, with a few diverting rest stops along the way. The movie begins...

This review should really start off with a faux spoiler alert – not that any major plot points are given away or twists revealed - it’s simply the fact that Barbarian needs to be seen to be believed.
It was made repeatedly clear by those involved in promoting the movie that no reviews or spoilers were to be published in any form until two days before Barbarian’s release, and after seeing the results, you can understand why. The story makes a brave handbrake turn and to detail it in any way would spoil the fun. It would be easier if this review simply consisted of ‘go and experience Barbarian for yourself, you won’t believe it’, but that wouldn’t make for a compelling read. So, if you’re still willing to delve deeper now that you’re aware of the potential danger - just like the movie’s protagonist Tess Campbell…...

Bloody Disgusting’s Barbarian review is spoiler-free.
Meet one of horror’s biggest, most savage surprises of the year. Writer/Director Zach Cregger (“The Whitest Kids U’ Know”) eschews conventions in Barbarian to keep audiences on edge, making for one of the most delightfully unhinged viewing experiences in recent memory. Not much is known about Barbarian beyond the fact that it stars exciting up-and-comers Georgina Campbell and Bill Skarsgård and that it’s set, largely, in an Airbnb, that’s (maybe) been double-booked. The trailers have been minimalist, the posters even more so. Even the title seems somewhat vague (who – or what – is the ‘barbarian’ exactly?). You won’t be surprised to hear that it’s all very much on purpose; the mystery is the selling point here, and while there’s certainly a lot to be said, and a lot that this writer wants to say, let’s keep this brief since going in as cold as possible is strongly recommended – Barbarian is the best horror film of 2022. If you’re a genre fan, you should definitely see this movie.

It has been a pretty darn good year for horror fans so far. We've had everything from the return of beloved franchises with "Scream" to the return of Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, the duo behind "Sinister," with the genre hit "The Black Phone." But oftentimes, it's the things that nobody sees coming that can shock and delights horror fans the most. And believe me when I tell you that shock is coming in the form of "Barbarian." You are not ready for the absolute unpredictable roller coaster of craziness that is about to happen to you when this movie hits theaters. It is the unexpected surprise of the year.
Writer/director Zach Cregger's latest centers on a young woman named Tess (Georgina Campbell) who is traveling to Detroit for a job interview and, as so many of us do these days, books a rental home rather than a hotel.

You have been warned, so expect minor spoilers ahead.

At first, the unpredictable home-invasion horror pic “Barbarian” seems too obvious to get worked up about. How can you trust a slow-burning chiller that repeatedly baits viewers with a scenario that’s so implausible that you repeatedly yell and/or laugh helplessly at its protagonist? Short answer: You can’t, and that’s awesome.
The set-up is simple enough: Tess first rents and then explores a suburban house near Detroit. That house was somehow double-booked, as Tess soon discovers through conversations with Keith, the gentlemanly but also suspiciously anxious other tenant. You might already be wondering: What sane person unwittingly rents anything in Michigan, and why is Tess spending so much time exploring a basement that has a hidden door, behind which is a room with a spare bed frame, a metal bucket, and a camcorder?
By the time Tess decides to follow her wonky instincts into a sub-basement(??), it...

In the new horror/mystery "Barbarian," nothing is as it seems -- and everything seems totally weird, so the fact that it isn't what it seems makes it even weirder and more terrifying than you thought possible. It's altogether strange and unnerving, but writer/director Zach Cregger also delivers a horrific tale that is ripe with moments for laughter, because it really is just so damn bizarre. He's a good person for this kind of mesh, given his background in comedy, and his unique script brings a whole new level of surprise to the genre.
"Barbarian" tells the story of a woman named Tess (Georgina Campbell), who arrives at an Airbnb she rented in Detroit one night only to find that a man named Keith (Bill Skarsgård) is already staying there. Against her better judgment, she decides to stay the night at the home until a solution can be secured — but,...

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have a new four-legged friend in their lives. The newest addition to the family, a 7-year-old rescue beagle named Mamma Mia, spent the majority of her life living in a cage at an animal-testing facility, where she was forced to breed litters for experimentation. For Markle, who has a rescue beagle named Guy, it wasn't long after she heard Mamma Mia's story that she decided to get involved, Los Angeles Times reported on Aug. 24.
According to the Beagle Freedom Project website, Mamma Mia is one of 4,000 beagles rescued from Envigo, an animal-testing facility based in Virginia. Once Envigo shut down on June 13, the dogs were transported to crowded shelters across the country. Mamma Mia and her eight puppies - Iris, Dahlia, Bonnie, Jillian, Indigo, Pebbles, Bluebell, and Lilly - were sent to Maryland, where the royal couple met Shannon Keith, an animal-rights attorney who runs the Bfp.
