“She Wolf” director Tamae Garateguy, one of the most exciting talents on Latin America’s burgeoning genre scene, is set to direct “Fuckin’ Sexy,” a sex doll horror movie set up at Argentina’s Machaco Films, producer of Damien Rugna’s “Terrified” and “When Evil Lurks.”
A bold swing, which is what Garateguy’s fans love about her, “Fuckin’g Sexy” is set on the Argentina-Paraguay-Brazil triple frontier where laborer Juan stumbles on a life-size latex sex doll. It proves “a device of death” but, in a long journey through the jungle, Juan comes to recognises its “noble heart.”

“House of Gucci” (Universal Pictures Home Entertainment) The legendary and legendarily vicious Gucci fashion empire gets the old-fashioned big movie treatment with Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, and Lady Gaga. Is it kind of ridiculous? Yes, but it’s also the reboot of “Dynasty” you never knew you wanted, one that’s best watched with a living room full of your rowdiest and most opinionated friends. Everyone in the movie is doing a variation on Italian-accented English, the settings are opulent, and Gaga is giving look after look after hat after hat and you will respect the wild, criminal duh-raaamaaa of it all.
Also Available:
“American Underdog” (Lionsgate) Zachary Levi stars as NFL champ Kurt Warner, who overcame multiple challenges and setbacks on the road to football glory.
“Apex” (Rlje Films) Bruce Willis must kill or be killed in order to escape prison.

Ulysses is a hundred-year-old man living with his wife, Dalia, in their Argentine colonial apartment. This is the last night of his life and Ulysses will start to experience frightening events in his apartment and throughout the building. They are events that will force him to rethink past decisions, his present circumstances and his view about his reality. Let's start by getting this out of the way first. There is a certain point in Gonzalo Calzada's drama thriller Nocturna: Side A - The Great Old Man's Night, which may be different for everyone else, where you will say to yourself, ‘Okay. I’m going to cry during this movie, aren’t I?’. And that is okay. For me it happened around the half hour mark, where...

One of my favorite films of the year, Gonzalo Calzada's Nocturna: Side A - The Great Old Man's Night, and it's accompanying film, Nocturna: Side B - Where the Elephants Go to Die, are coming to DVD and Digital on January 18th. To be released by Breaking Glass Pictures, this duo of emotionally loaded chiller films has been making audiences break out the hankies all over the world, wherever it has played. I shamelessly count myself as one of them. Below lies my confession in my review from Fantaspoa this year. With the flick of a switch I realized my expectations, based off of Calzada's previous horror films, were wrong and I understood what his intentions really were. From there I was fully...

As new Covid protocols bedeviled travel to the U.K. and other parts of Europe, 3,000 lucky souls, including several hundred execs from Europe, were able to enjoy summer sun and post-lockdown reunions at Buenos Aires’ Ventana Sur. Latin America’s biggest film and TV market and forum, it wrapped Friday Dec. 3 with an humungous, though thankfully rapid, awards ceremony. Following, 10 takeaways from the hybrid event:
The Way the Market’s Going
Is this the shape of things to come? At least in the short-term?Big films and deals were announced at or during Ventana Sur: Vis revealed it’s teaming with El Estudio and Infinity Hill on the Rob Schneider-directed “Love Is Love,” now a Paramount Plus Original; Pantelion Films unveiled its “most ambitious undertaking to date,” “Usurpadora, the Musical,” a modern movie adaptation of the Televisa classic; FilmSharks confirmed deals with Netflix and HBO Max on Veronica Chen’s “High Tide.

Fernando Díaz’s Machaco Films and Roxana Ramos’ Aramos Cine have partnered to set up a joint venture: La Puerta Roja, focused on horror and fantasy movies as well as working with prominent genre directors from Ibero-America. Both companies are based in Buenos Aires.
The idea sprang from Machaco and Aramos’s co-production partnership on Demian Rugna’s next project “When Evil Lurks.” Machaco had already produced Rugna’s “Terrified,” awarded at the Austin Fantastic Fest among a flurry of international kudos, and whose remake rights were acquired by Guillermo del Toro.
A cinema-tv production company, Machaco Films was founded over 20 years ago. Productions include Fernando Díaz’s “Soul’s Square,” and Rossana Díaz Costa’s “Trip to Timbuktu” and “A World for Julius,” based on Alfredo Bryce Echenique’s same-titled novel.
As for Aramos, it has raised international expectations with Alexi Tolstoy’s short story adaptation of “Vurdalak Blood,...

U.K.-French sales, distribution and production company Alief has dealt Gonzalo Calzada’s award-winning Argentine thriller double bill “Nocturna” in France and Belgium to horror-centric streaming platform Freaks On.
Freaks On plans to release the film early next year, day-and-date on its platform, in select theaters and in physical media.
As envisioned by Argentine writer-director Gonzalo Calzada, “Nocturna: Side A…” turns on a nearly 100-year-old man who struggles to atone for the transgressions he has committed in his life. In “Nocturna: Side B…,” Calzada explores an experimental version of the same story.
“’Nocturna’ is inspired by my grandparents and the type of relationship they had with each other,” Calzada explained to Variety at last year’s Ventana Sur. “It’s also about the meaning of aging in a society that is imperceptive about seeing this reality. It shows the self-confidence of the twilight years as a unique possibility of...

It's nice to see a film that you love get embraced by a festival and take home a slew of hardware. Screamfest Horror Film Festival announced this year's award winners and Gonzalo Calzada's Nocturna: Side A - The Great Old Man's Night cleaned up. Among the feature film categories Calzada's dramatic horror film won Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor for Pepe Soriano and Best Editing. Another favorite of mine from this year, What Josiah Saw, was the only other multi-award winner taking home wins in cinematography and special effects. Libby Ewing won the best actress award for When I Consume You. Festival opener The Retaliators won Special Effects Makeup. The complete list of all the winners follows in the official announcement. ...

“Nocturna,” an Argentinian-made fantasy film that played last month in the Shanghai International Film Festival’s midnight fantasy section, has been picked up by Chinese company Naropean.
Naropean, which shares executives with Hgc Entertainment, one of the more prominent Chinese IP groups, has taken rights for China, Asia and Oceania, as well as remake rights. The deal represents one of the few rights deals struck so far at the Cannes Market with a Chinese buyer.
Directed by Gonzalo Calzada, “Nocturna” is actually a pair of films where events are told from the a different point of view. In “Nocturna: Side A — The Great Old Man’s Night,” the story follows a nearly 100-year-old man who, on his final night on earth, fights for redemption from his previous misdeeds. Alief has acquired international rights to the high-concept fantasy “Strawberry Mansion,” which world premiered at this year’s Sundance, where it was acquired by Music Box Films for North America, and by Periscoop Films for Benelux. Alief will be introducing the film to international buyers during June’s virtual Cannes market, and in person during July’s Marche Du Film.
“Strawberry Mansion” is written and directed by Kentucker Audley and Albert Birney. It stars Kentucker Audley, Reed Birney, Penny Fuller, Grace Glowicki and Linas Phillips.
The film is set in the not-too-distant future, where an all-seeing surveillance state conducts “dream audits” to collect taxes on the unconscious lives of the populace. U.K.-based distribution company Alief has secured global sales and remake rights for “Nocturna,” sides A and B, from writer-director Gonzalo Calzada.
The British distributors have also shared with Variety an exclusive trailer from the film’s upcoming marketing campaign, set to kick off on Dec. 1 at the multi-city Ventana Sur market.
The “Nocturna” films are produced by Argentine genre specialists Coruya Cine and Calzada’s regular producers La Puerta Cinematografica.
At last year’s Blood Window genre showcase, one of Ventana Sur’s prominent sidebars, the Nocturna films were screened as works in progress. Both were finished shortly thereafter and scheduled for a 2020 release which was postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak. A possible silver lining of the delay, the films were able to screen a preview at October’s B3 Biennale of the Moving Image in Frankfurt, building buzz ahead of their market premiere.

Buenos Aires — “The Good Intentions,” the first feature of Argentina’s Argentina’s Ana García Blaya, won two industry prizes, including the top European Vision Prize, at the 2018 10th Ventana Sur, which wraps Dec. 14 in Buenos Aires. It shared a third.

“Luciferina” is an intense and suspenseful horror film, which takes many of the cliches one expects from the genre, and subverts them in order to create something a little more original. Even though it deals with Christian horror themes and sexuality, it does so in quite the unique way. I had the opportunity to exchange e-mails with the film’s director, Argentinian filmmaker Gonzalo Calzada. What follows is a brief interview in which he tells me a little about the pre-production process of the movie, as well as the themes he tries to convey through this particular story. What compelled you to tell an exorcism (or sexorcism) story? Luciferina is a story that speaks of the struggle between the forces of good and the...

There’s nothing more tired than a horror movie centred around an exorcism, or demonic possessions in general. After more than forty years of copycats and generally unoriginal fare, I’ve come to accept that nothing will end up beating William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist”. Yes, the movie hasn’t aged as well as other classics —it takes forever to get started—, but it still manages to scare the crap out of me. This is why I wasn’t especially excited to watch Gonzalo Calzada’s “Luciferina” —yes, it’s always intriguing to watch a Latin-American horror picture (that is why the genre has done so well here in Peru), but, at least from what I could gather from the trailers, the film didn’t look particularly original or horrifying. Oh, how wrong...
