Jeopardy!‘s 2024 Tournament of Champions continued on Wednesday night (February 28) as the divisive Yogesh Raut made his return to the Alex Trebek stage to take on Jake DeArruda and Nick Cascone. Raut, who won three games during Season 39, drew controversy last year when he posted a Facebook rant about Jeopardy!, referring to the long-running game show as “not important.” “Jeopardy has not nor will ever be the Olympics of quizzing,” Raut wrote at the time. “Jeopardy is not the problem; its centrality to American quizzing culture is…. There will never be healthy quizzing culture in this country until we can learn to stop pretending Jeopardy! is important.” Despite his comments, Raut was invited back for the Tournament of Champions, which kicked off last Friday, and he made the most of his opportunity. The entire episode was a back-and-forth battle, with each contestant dominating at different points. After the first round,...

It’s hard to become a Jeopardy! celebrity … unless, of course, you’re already participating in Celebrity Jeopardy!
The concept of the long-running quiz show institution is so simple that it doesn’t leave much room for personality. Sure, we’ve gotten to know some super champs over the years like James Holzhauer, Amy Schneider, and Goat-turned-host Ken Jennings. But most contestants come and go with little fanfare. That was not the case for Yogesh Raut.
This blogger, podcaster, and writer from Springfield, Illinois immediately popped off the screen during his first game on Jan. 11, 2023. The stoic contender was not shy about sharing his advanced level of trivia mastery. Raut had participated in so many prominent trivia tourneys (though he prefers the term “quizzing”) that he was already well-known on the scene. In the interview portion of his first episode, he shared an anecdote of how Jeopardy! super champion...

Jeopardy! viewers had plenty to say about recent champion Jake DeArruda, both positive and negative, but now the show’s producers have shared their thoughts on the polarizing contestant. The delivery dispatcher from Ludlow, Vermont, won three games in a row last week, earning 86,00 in the process. But some fans were irritated by his on-screen behavior, including his facial expressions and interruptions of host Ken Jennings. On Monday’s Inside Jeopardy! podcast, long-time producer Sarah Foss spoke with the 2017 Tournament of Champions winner Buzzy Cohen about DeArruda and the online reaction to his performance. “Let’s just talk about Jake,” Foss said after recapping last week’s episodes. “He’s only 23 years old. Ken joked in a post-game chat he’s got t-shirts older than Jake. [He] was inspired by Matt Jackson, who was another very strong champion back when he was 23 and just mowed down the competition.” She then asked...

Jeopardy! contestant Jake DeArruda was “drowning out the haters” ahead of Wednesday’s (February 1) episode, where he was looking to secure his fourth win in a row. The delivery dispatcher from Ludlow, Vermont, has been a divisive player among viewers, with some going as far as to call him the “most annoying contestant ever.” However, DeArruda was not letting the naysayers get to him. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to drown out the haters,” he tweeted, alongside a photo of himself in the shower being doused in champagne. DeArruda received a lot of support in the comments, with one person telling him, “Only those who succeed tend to have haters. You have a quirky personality I’m here for it.” “Good job! I get tired of haters on Twitter! Where’s the love?” wrote another, while one person added, “Haha, man it’s rough on here. But hey,...

It’s good news for comedian Hasan Minhaj, as Jeopardy! viewers appear to have found a new candidate for the “most annoying contestant ever.” Delivery dispatcher Jake DeArruda is the contestant in question, as some fans have deemed him “unwatchable.” The Ludlow, Vermont native has been on a roll since knocking Troy Meyer off the winner’s podium last week and, as of Tuesday (January 31), has won three games in a row. “Is it just me or does anyone else think Jake is the most annoying contestant ever?” one Twitter user commented after the latest episode, and others seemed to agree. “I won’t be able to watch him much longer,” tweeted another viewer. “I’m normally pretty tolerant of the quirkier champs, but Omg this guy. Ugh.” Alright, ladies. Drop a in the comments if you agree with Ken! pic.twitter.com/sibY7zJSV5 — Jeopardy! (@Jeopardy) February 1, 2023 I won...

Current Jeopardy! champion Jake DeArruda is opening up about his experience on the show and how he knocked off super-champ Troy Meyer in last Friday’s (January 27) game. DeArruda, a delivery dispatcher from Ludlow, Vermont, shocked viewers on Friday’s episode when he beat fan favorite Meyer, who had amassed 214,802 during a seemingly unstoppable six-game winning streak. In a series of blog posts, DeArruda shared his thoughts on the game, along with his views on the show’s hosts and past players. Upon arriving at the studio for his pre-game prep, DeArruda said he found out the name of the current champion, Troy Meyer. He admitted that his “eyes widened” as he recognized the name from the rankings of the World Quizzing Championships and other online trivia games. “Long story short, Troy is a far superior pure trivia player than Cris Pannullo,” DeArruda said, referencing the reigning champion on the broadcast episodes at the time.
