Nearly eight years have passed since writer/director Jason Lei Howden announced that he would be making a sequel to his feature directorial debut Deathgasm (watch it Here). In that time, Howden has made Guns Akimbo and set up a film and comic book project called Monsters of Metal… and now he’s finally getting ready to head into production on Deathgasm 2! But to get the sequel made properly, he needs some help from the fans. That’s why Deathgasm 2 is currently raising funds and selling perks – including accepting pre-orders for copies of the finished film – on Kickstarter.
Deathgasm, released in 2015, tells the story of two high-school metal-heads, Brodie (played by Cawthorne) and Zakk (Blake), who form a band called Deathgasm. One day, while delving into some dark magic to escape their mundane lives, the duo unwittingly summon an evil entity called The Blind One. In the sequel, “which promises...

Nearly seven years have passed since writer/director Jason Lei Howden announced that he would be making a sequel to his feature directorial debut Deathgasm (watch it Here). In that time, Howden has made Guns Akimbo and set up a cool film and comic book project called Monsters of Metal… but now he’s finally getting back to Deathgasm 2. Variety broke the news that Deathgasm 2 begins filming in New Zealand next year – and that Howden is also co-writing a four-issue Deathgasm comic book series for Opus Comics that will bridge the gap between the first film and the sequel.
Deathgasm stars Milo Cawthorne, James Blake, and Kimberley Crossman are in talks to return for Deathgasm 2.

The sequel, which is produced by Raven Banner Entertainment, is set to start shooting in New Zealand next year. Guns Akimbo is a little-known 2019 New Zealand film which has recently been added to Amazon Prime in the United States. It’s a film that has flown under the radar, but after viewing, it’s a film that deserves to have a wider audience.
In an alternate future, but maybe not with how 2020 is going, an underground fight club, Skizm, is gaining popularity by live-streaming real death matches between criminals. The police and the government want to shut it down, but they cannot find the criminal mastermind, Riktor (Ned Dennehy), or Skizm’s deadliest and top competitor, Nix (Samara Weaving), to stop the popular enterprise.

If you’re looking for a laugh, I’ve got a couple of funny trailers here for you to watch for an upcoming sci-fi comedy from New Zealand called Mega Time Squad.
The film is described as The Castle meets Looper, and it is said to be a "study in high-meets-low, combining elements of the sci-fi, the crime thriller, and the comedy to make a comedy heist film with a time-traveling twist." As you’ll see in the trailer, things take an interesting turn.
The story follows a low-level criminal from the small town of Thames in New Zealand who “steals an ancient Chinese bracelet time-travel device that helps him pull off a heist and start a new life. But he may not survive the demonic consequences of tampering with time.”

"If you meet your other self while time traveling, that's when the demon comes." Dark Sky has released an official Us trailer for a time travel indie comedy titled Mega Time Squad, made in New Zealand, finally arriving on Us shores in February. Described as The Castle meets Looper, Mega Time Squad is a "study in high-meets-low, combining elements of the sci-fi, the crime thriller and the comedy to make a comedy heist film with a time-traveling twist." It's about a small time criminal who finds an ancient Chinese device that can help him pull off a heist and start a new life – but he may not survive the consequences of tampering with time. This stars Anton Tennet, Jonny Brugh, Hetty Gaskell-Hahn, Arlo Gibson, Eru Wilton, Milo Cawthorne, & Simon Ward. Looks very low budget and wacky and dumb, and maybe entertaining. Here's the official Us trailer (+ original poster) for Tim van Dammen...

[To get you into the spooky spirit, the Daily Dead team is spotlighting double features that we think would be fun to watch this Halloween season. Keep an eye on Daily Dead for more double feature recommendations, and check here for our previous Halloween 2017 coverage.]
This October, get ready to rock (queue bending guitar notes). Because Daily Dead productions brings you the rock event of the season with Heavy Metal Halloween (queue random explosion noises). Live, from whatever venue you want to call your house, we’ve got two face-melting, pants-dropping flicks that are sure to leave your guests on their knees worshipping at the altar of the gods of rock (queue the Rob Halford knock-off kind of, sort of, not really hitting a high note).
Okay, don’t worry. I’m not going to keep using the crappy concert ad gimmick, but this feature is going to lean heavy on the heavy metal. Think of this Halloween season double feature recommendation as an opening act and headliner that will make for a great show where metal is the connective thread, but each movie has its own tone and themes that will give at least...

February is known as Women in Horror Month, when the spotlight is put on female filmmakers working inside our favorite genre, and many horror sites run pieces about movies directed by women. And that’s great! But there’s no reason why that spotlight should be limited to only one month, particularly when there are so many brilliant and talented female filmmakers working in the genre. Why not use this October to hit up these titles on Shudder and get to know some of the most exciting female voices in horror right now?

2015 was a fantastic year for horror movies, and one of the more entertaining ones was writer/director Jason Lei Howden‘s metal/horror/comedy Deathgasm. It’s his debut feature, but you wouldn’t know it by how well it manages the balance between gory horror and big laughs. The movie recently hit home video from Dark Sky Films, and while it’s fairly light on special features it does include a commentary track from Howden. He’s understandably enthusiastic about his film, his cast & crew, and — of course — heavy metal music, and he delivers an entertaining track while worth a listen from fans. Keep reading to see what I heard on the Deathgasm commentary. Deathgasm (2015) Commentators: Jason Lei Howden (writer/director) 1. The opening black & white sequence was meant to emulate black metal album covers. 2. Producer Ant Timpson‘s “rectal prolapse” graphic is apparently on his business cards now. Hopefully I’ll remember to ask for one...

I’m not sure if it’s because I had the opportunity to see and watch more this year, but to me, 2015 seems like it was such an exceptional year for genre films across the board. Once again, indie horror gave us a bevy of incredible films from a variety of subgenres, and even studio films seemed to step things up this year as well (a trend I do hope continues). Here’s a look at some of my favorite genre offerings from this year:
Turbo Kid: One of two movies in 2015 that left me with a huge, goofy-ass grin on my face from start to finish was Turbo Kid, the wickedly fun post-apocalyptic story of a young hero, an evil warlord, a quirky sidekick and her gnome stick. Well here it is, my Top 15 films of 2015. If you’ve ever read one of my end of year lists, you’ll know that my choices tend to be a million miles away from the mainstream; and this year is no different! This year has been Amazing for films, I could easily had penned a list of 52 films – one for each week of the year – but instead I managed to narrow down the choices to 28 films quite swiftly. However, to hit this years target of a Top 15 (for 2015 geddit?) it took a hell of a lot of work. I think this list even surprises me – there’s a number of films that going back over the 508[!] films we’ve reviewed here on Nerdly in 2015, at the time I reviewed them, I didn’t expect would stay with me till the end of the very end of the year. Oh, and...

Blood of Your Blood: Paxson’s Comedy Horror Debut Lacks Bite
Unspooling with all the finesse of a drunken yet trenchant teenager’s expletive laden ranting at an underwhelmingly attended frat party, Madellaine Paxson’s directorial debut, the indie horror comedy Blood Punch, fails to satisfy even as it casts a wide net of genre blending.
Paxson, previously a writer of children’s television fare, directs from Eddie Guzelian’s (The Tigger Movie, 2000) screenplay, but everyone seems oblivious to how adults act and sound, whether or not in the confines of a sometimes ludicrous scenario. Since premiering in 2013 at the Austin Film Festival, the title has picked up its fair share of champions, with several sources praising the film’s wit and originality. Unfortunately, despite its ambitious twists and turns, these inklings of authenticity can be traced to notable elements from a slew of previous titles, and there’s little...

Deathgasm. That name conjures up a myriad of things in your mind. A myriad of things that Deathgasm probably contains in its short, but packed, 90 minutes running time. From death by dildo, decapitations, eviscerations, disembowelment, dismemberment and more. And metal. Lots and lots of heavy metal. Old-school metal, death metal, black metal; but definitely Not any hair metal!
The movie tells the story of Brodie, a metal-loving kid sent to live with his bible-bashing relatives who is an outcast at home And at school.
When he meets a kindred spirit in Zakk at the local record shop, they decide – along with Brodie only two schoolfriends – to start their own band, the titular Deathgasm (they rejected the name Intestinal Bungee Jump). Soon the duo’s resentment of the suburban wasteland leads them to...

★★★★☆ With What We Do in the Shadows, Housebound and now Deathgasm (2015), New Zealand is fast becoming the go-to place for crowd-pleasing horror comedies. Jason Lei Howden's directorial debut is primed for unalloyed genre thrills, making you laugh until your sides hurt and subverting the rom-zom-com format. If fears going in hinged on the suspicion that Deathgasm was an attention-grabbing title and nothing much else, worries dissipate soon enough, as a laugh-out-loud banquet of blood, made in the spirit of Evil Dead II (1988) and Peter Jackson's Braindead (1992), plays out on the screen. Brodie (Milo Cawthorne) is a heavy metal fan spinning the black circle for Satan.

What happens when two children’s entertainment scribes (boasting credits such as The Tigger Movie, The Penguins Of Madagascar, Peter Rabbit, and Kim Possible) collaborate on their first feature film? Obviously you get a kid friendly movie titled Blood Punch, filled with death, guts, murder, betrayal – wait, what? You heard right. Director Madellaine Paxson and writer Eddie Guzelian are ditching all that warm and fuzzy bullshit to bring you their own twisted fairy tale about three rowdy criminals forced to repeat the same deadly day over and over again. It’s like kind of like Groundhog Day – a vile, wicked, royally f#cked up Groundhog Day your mum certainly wouldn’t approve of.
It all starts when Milton (Milo Cawthorne), a shy chemistry wiz, meets Skyler (Olivia Tennet), a criminal looking for the best meth cook she can find. After meeting in Milton’s rehab clinic (where else would you find the best junkies?...

Fright Rags has added four new beautifully dark T-Shirts to their collection that were inspired by covers of the Idw Publishing horror comic series, 30 Days of Night. Also in this morning's round-up: release details for Mickey Keating's Pod and the horror-thriller Blood Punch.
30 Days of Night T-Shirts: In the three-issue comic series 30 Days of Night written by Steve Niles with artwork by Ben Templesmith, vampires roam the frozen landscape of Barrow, Alaska. The town lies 300 miles north of the Arctic Circle, resulting in the sun not rising there (during the Winter Solstice) for 30 days. The vampires take this annual celestial event as an opportunity to wreak havoc on the townspeople.
In 2012, the series returned with 30 Days of Night Volume 1 by series creator Steve Niles and illustrated by Sam Kieth. Volume 2 in the series was released in August of that same year with artwork by Christopher Mitten and Davide Furno.

New Zealand hasn’t produced many horror films over the years, but those it has given birth to are remarkably strong entries. The late ’80s and early ’90s witnessed the rise of Kiwi director Peter Jackson who made a name for himself with the Bad Taste (1988) and Dead Alive (1992). Jackson helped shine a spotlight on the countries genre offerings and his success no doubt opened the door for a new generation of Kiwi genre filmmakers. The latest of these films to make its way Stateside is Jason Lei Howden’s outrageous debut feature Deathgasm about a group of suburban metal heads who summon a demonic force.
Milo Cawthorne and James Blake play Brodie and Zakk, two renegade outcasts who quickly bond over their mutual admiration of heavy metal and decide to form a band. But their dreams...

The horror comedy genre has seen many lauded entries over the years, from Mel Brooks’ 1974 feature Young Frankenstein to the 2010 film Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. The latest entry in the sub-genre comes from New Zealand, as writer-director Jason Lei Howden makes his feature film debut with Deathgasm. The film’s synopsis is below.
A pack of metalhead outcasts in a small New Zealand town form a band and make the mistake of performing accursed riffs off an ancient page of sheet music, releasing total hell on their hated suburban neighbourhood. They may not love their neighbours, but they’d also prefer not to be responsible for the end of the world. Blood will spray, pinch harmonics will shriek, monsters will annihilate, and the most balls-out heavy metal horror/comedy you could ever imagine is about to shake your foundations. Bang. Your. Heads.
The film will be playing at the upcoming Fantasia International Film Festival,...

During the 2015 SXSW Film Festival, Daily Dead had the opportunity to catch up with several members of the cast and crew for Deathgasm, the wildly raucous tribute by Jason Lei Howden to all things horror and metal. We heard from Howden, producers Ant Timpson, Andrew Beattie as well as co-stars Milo Cawthorne and Kimberley Crossman about their involvement in the project and much more.
I have to congratulate you all on a great film- it was insanely fun to watch with a crowd like this and you certainly found some really unusual ways of killing people with sex toys which was beyond crazy.
Jason Lei Howden: Funny story about that; Andrew popped over with the “Church Stuff” box that was filled with dildos and said it was my gift from production. And they ended up accidentally in our garage sale; I had forgotten about them and some guy was...

When you walk into a movie titled Deathgasm, there’s an instant expectation of horrific lunacy. By purchasing a ticket, you’re begging for a literal orgasm of death set to the tune of metallic shredding that would make Satan himself piss his pants, and that’s something first-time-feature director Jason Lei Howden delivers in droves.
Once the film kicks in, with a frantic opening credits montage that’s comprised of devilish scribblings and face-melting guitar riffs, your hair will spike up and an excited chill will shoot down your spine as one thing becomes immediately apparent – Deathgasm is the real deal. Straight from the bowels of hell comes a metalhead’s wet dream, scored by some of the thrashiest New Zealand and international metal icons around. F*ck thumbs, this film gets two metal horns way, Way up.

As someone who relishes new and unusual storytelling, it’s been great to see the recent boom of films coming out of New Zealand, a country that embraces and celebrates the unusual in ways most other places in the world just cannot. The latest Kiwi film to make its way Stateside is Jason Lei Howden’s Deathgasm, the ridiculously fun and bombastic celebration of horror and heavy metal that premiered at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival last night. While the film may garner a lot of attention for it’s more over-the-top approach to gore, nudity and its clever use of sex toys, what makes Deathgasm so special is that the story itself is full of heart and features breakout performances from both Milo Cawthorne and Kimberley Crossman, who bring tons of infectious energy to the project.

Jason Lei Howden's Deathgasm will show at the SXSW Film Festival. This film festival and cultural event takes place in Austin, Texas, each year. As part of the Midnighters line up, Deathgasm will play later this year. In the film, Brodie (Milo Cawthorne) is a new kid in a small town. A metalhead, Brodie becomes friends with Zakk (James Blake), initially through music. But then, they bond in blood! As well, the first trailer for Deathgasm has been released and it is a gruesome one. Brodie and Zakk team up through metal in this trailer. Soon, they find a way to summon a demon, who forces them into murder. Now, the body count stacks up and the blood spills all over as this duo lays waste to their friends. Medina (Kimberley Crossman) comes along for the ride, until almost everyone is sporting new wounds. The trailer is truly a gorey one.
