Fritz Lang continues his take-no-prisoners indictment of America’s curious relationship with crime; this time he presents the thesis that an innocent man can be a pawn in cosmic game of injustice. Three-time loser Henry Fonda, the glummest actor in ’30s films, doesn’t mean to rob or kill, but gosh darn it, They Made Him a Criminal. Those considerations aside, it’s a wonderful cinematic achievement, made all the better by a decent digital restoration.

The Rolling Stones released a music video for “Ride ‘Em On Down” starring Kristen Stewart on Thursday. ‘Ride ‘Em On Down’ Music Video Eddie Taylor originally recorded “Ride ‘Em on Down” in 1955. This is the band’s first single off their 25th studio album, as well as the first in more than a decade. “It […]

The Rolling Stones release Blue & Lonesome, their first album in eleven years, today, and this occasion is marked well: with a music video in which Kristen Stewart barrels a Mustang Gt down Los Angeles’ abandoned streets and waterways while rocking out to “Ride ‘Em on Down,” the band’s cover of an Eddie Taylor tune. The shot-in-two-days, François Rousselet-directed effort is quick, sunny, sexy, a bit dumb in a way that’s plenty affable, and wisely favors immediacy over coherency.

Kristen Stewart has achieved the ultimate L.A. dream: driving on a clear freeway!
Better still, K-Stew- who recently deserted the bleach bandwagon to return to her natural dark shade – hit the “Gas, Gas, Gas” behind the wheel of a vintage ’65 Mustang while shooting a video for the Rolling Stones‘ new cover of the bluesy classic “Ride ‘Em On Down.”
“It didn’t take much more than a few words to get me amped on the idea,” says Stewart in a statement. The clip shows her driving wildly around the empty streets of downtown L.A., before dancing beside a...

Reason No. 147 why Kristen Stewart is too cool for school.
The 26-year-old actress stars in the latest Rolling Stones music video, a rousing cover of Eddie Taylor's 1955 blues hit, "Ride 'Em On Down." The track is the third to come off the legendary rockers' new all-cover album, Blue & Lonesome, released Friday.
In the three-minute clip, Stewart rocks a ripped T-shirt and blue jeans as she joyrides in a sleek turquoise '65 Mustang. In between smokes and a pit stop to gyrate near an abandoned gas station -- giving us a glimpse at her taut midsection -- the former Twilight star jams to the Rolling Stones track, driving erratically through the streets of Los Angeles. When she gets pulled over by a "police officer" in plain clothes, she utters one of the few lines she speaks in the video: "You should probably get out of here."

Elmore James (January 17, 1918 - May 24, 1963), inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, is one of the most important figures in the development of the blues. By playing electric guitar not as a louder version of an acoustic guitar, but rather as a new instrument that took advantage of the amplifier to create a new sound, he revolutionized the blues and influenced several generations of rockers as well.
Fortunately, there is a single-cd compilation that offers an excellent cross-section of his legacy: The Sky Is Crying: The History of Elmore James (Rhino, 1993). Unfortunately, it's no longer in print and isn't on iTunes, but it was so popular and highly acclaimed that there are plenty of copies still floating around, as a look at Amazon.com quickly reveals -- and they're still cheap, too. The 21-song collection includes items from the Trumpet, Chess, Flair, Atlantic, Chief, Fire, Sphere Sound,...

Eddie Taylor (Henry Fonda) leaves his third stretch in prison and walks straight into the arms of his wife to be, Joan (Sylvia Sidney). He vows to leave his criminal ways behind him and make a new life with Joan, but it proves hard to go straight. No-one trusts him and when he appears to have become involved in a deadly bank job, no-one will believe in his innocence (apart from the doting Joan). Eventually they go on the run together, but the odds seem stacked against them.

Director Fritz Lang has a nigh-on peerless resumé. Metropolis, M, The Big Heat, Scarlet Street and this, only his second film made following his move to Hollywood from an increasingly problematic 1930′s National Socialist-dominated Germany. Film Noir, Expressionism and big themes of determinism, human nature and destiny – all seemlessly woven through his oeuvre and all very much present in this excellent crime drama.

Last week saw the release of 2011’s Oscar-favourite The Artist, alongside two other acclaimed indie films of the year in Martha Marcy May Marlene and Like Crazy. This week brings a different mix to the shelves, with Ralph Fiennes’ directorial debut, Coriolanus, topping the list.
Continuing on from last week, too, Play are releasing a handful of exclusive Blu-ray steelbooks of contemporary classics that will be must-buys for fans of the films and the format. If you’re not yet Blu-ray capable, now is definitely the time to update your television / player to enable the best viewing experience your home has to offer.
My personal picks of the week:
Another tie this week, with two very different films topping the list for me.
Ralph Fiennes’ Coriolanus & Michael Dowse’s Goon
Coriolanus Iframe Embed for Youtube
DVD and Blu-ray

Back in the Prohibition days, when real gangsters were feted like tabloid celebrities, Hollywood jumped on the band-wagon with a series of films loosely-based-on-something-vaguely-resembling-true-stories. This film is not usually mentioned in company with your Scarface, Little Caesar et al, possibly because it came along a few years later, but I suspect because it is a bit more considered and more artful than those other crowd-pleasing shoot-em-ups. You can decide for yourself as the 75th anniversary edition of You Only Live Once is released on DVD (although, annoyingly, not on Blu-Ray), today!
Henry Fonda – still some years away from being type-cast as America’s pre-eminent good-guy – plays three-time loser, Eddie Taylor, leaving prison under a shadow … If he’s imprisoned again, it’ll be the chair. As he leaves it’s obvious that he’s loved by the prisoners and warders alike – But all he’s interested in is Joan, the...
