Judd Ehrlich’s “The Price of Freedom” is an absorbing, disturbing, and scrupulously well-researched documentary that lays out the nuts and bolts of the National Rifle Association’s history. In the process, You probably think I’m talking about the NRA’s relentless lobbying of Congress; its macho coziness with presidents like Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump; its blackballing of political candidates who don’t have the right agenda; as well as the essential NRA ideology about what American gun law should consist of: no background checks, no training or permits, no restrictions on the buying and selling of assault weapons, no closing of the gun-show “loophole.”
The film covers all that stuff, and does it well. That said, we’ve heard most of it before, in the ongoing journalistic coverage of the gun debate (which is really a gun culture war), and in documentaries like “Making a Killing: Guns,...

Lamentably, many cities and school boards have been forced to drastically pull back their budgets in light of the perpetually sluggish global economy, leading to staff layoffs, school closures and the removal of music, arts and sports programs. In 2013, all three of those changes rocked Philadelphia's school system hard, and in the documentary "We Could Be King," we see how it affected two rival high schools which were forced to come together in sports and spirit. Directed by Judd Ehrlich, the film centers on the coaches, staff and students of Martin Luther King High School who had absorbed the population of the recently shuttered Germantown High School. The Mlk football team hadn't won a game in two years, and it's up to coach Ed Dunn not only to whip his athletes into shape, but to keep them from each other's throats. In this exclusive clip from the doc, you'll see...

Out on iTunes and cable VOD nationwide today, via TribecaFilm, is Judd Ehrlich’s critically-acclaimed feature documentary, "We Could Be King," which chronicles what happens when of 2 rival Philadelphia high schools - - Germantown and Martin Luther King, both long-time rivals - are forced to merge due to financial problems. Like so many U.S. cities across the country, the merger was the result of a budget crisis which forced Philadelphia to lay off over 4000 employees and close 37 schools. Slashing budgets and still facing shortfalls, Philadelphia did the unthinkable. It shuttered Germantown High...

Sports docs are fickle things. Often they're little more than highlight reels, adding a bit of social drama in to make the story seem more relevant than just the drama tallied on the scoreboard. Yet when done right, the synergy between on-field competition and off-field struggle makes for truly compelling storylines. The long shadow of the likes of Hoop Dreams falls over We Could Be King, and it's a testament to Director Judd Ehrlich and his team that the film at least strives for this type of penetrating and insightful filmmaking. Tackling the challenges when two rival Philadelphia schools are merged after severe budget cuts, the film traces the Cougars as they learn their oft-drilled mottos - humility, hunger - and bring these precepts...

The story of how schools deal with inter-school rivalry is one that has been seen in film for many years, whether examined in a dramatic setting or seen through a comedic lens. However, a number of these stories have been rooted in real-life tales, and a new documentary looks at how the students of two Philadelphia high schools deal with their rivalry. This story, however, doesn’t follow the usual pattern, as the documentary looks at how the students and administration reconcile their rivalry with city budget cuts that force the two schools to merge into one. The film is directed by Judd Ehrlich, and the first trailer for the film has now been released. The trailer can be seen below, and more information about the film can be found here.

There is a camp for everything. Dance, wrestling, Jesus — you name it, your kid can camp it. In Judd Ehrlich’s charming Magic Camp, the kids have no desire to be the next LeBron James or Sidney Crosby, however; they want to be like one of the Davids, Blaine or Copperfield. Held each summer in Bryn Mawr, Pa, Tannen’s Magic Camp, a spinoff of the famed Gotham magic store, teaches teenagers, mostly boys, the fine art of making a rabbit disappear into their ear or a wand suddenly appear in their hand. You think it’s difficult to saw someone in half? Just …...

Argo’s Oscar triumph will certainly enhance the careers of all those involved, none more so than its producer, director, and star, Ben Affleck. But it could also boost another filmmaker who has absolutely nothing to do with Argo, except a desire to bring to screen a part of the story that the acclaimed historical drama left out.
EW.com first told you about Science Fiction Land last fall, when its director, Judd Ehrlich, was seeking Kickstarter support to raise $50,000 to finish the project. (Mission: Accomplished.) To briefly recap here: Argo was based on the true-life tale of CIA agent...

Competition in the performing arts is a staple of non-fiction television and documentary at the moment, but few works step back from the American Idol-style face-off to depict the literal beginnings of their performer subjects. One film that does is Judd Ehrlich’s Magic Camp, a documentary about Tannen’s Magic Camp, a week-long event for budding young magicians where kids learn both stagecraft and sleight-of-hand from an illustrious group of visiting professionals. Ehrlich attended Magic Camp when he was young, and when he became a documentary filmmaker — his previous credits include Mayor of the West Side and Run for Your Life — he knew he had to return to capture that experience. Magic Camp receives its New York premiere at Doc NYC on Saturday, November 10, and some of the film’s young magicians will perform at the screening.

Ben Affleck's "Argo" has been universally acclaimed as a great political thriller based on true events, but two-time Emmy-nominated director Judd Ehrlich ("Run for Your Life," "Magic Camp") wants more for the story behind "Argo" than a film that takes significant dramatic liberties to simplify its plot. Ehrlich wants the truth, and he's spent the last seven years constructing a documentary to reveal just that. Enter "Science Fiction Land," Ehrlich's documentary that tells the true tale of Barry Ira Geller, a young inventor who optioned the rights to Roger Zelazny's award winning novel "Lord of Light." After writing a screenplay for the movie, he assembled a team suitable to tackle his passion project: "King of Comics" Jack Kirby; Hollywood makeup and special effects experts John Chambers and Maurice Stein; world-renowned architect Paolo Soleri, visionary author Ray Bradbury, and legendary...
