Director: Imtiaz Ali
“Hum chetaawani nahin denge, marenge,” a Sikh committee warns Amar Singh Chamkila, who is too far gone into wink-wink-nudge-nudge gaane route to care.
When threatened Chamkila, as played by Diljit Dosanjh, is like, whatever…
Was Chamkila a brave musician who wouldn’t be intimidated by moral policing and creative fascism? Director Imtiaz Ali, who had lately been churning out balderdash like, cringe, When Harry Met Sejal and, double cringe, Love Aaj Kal (Kartik Aaryan’s own Razia Sultan) , is back in form.
And in Punjab where he loves to shoot from his hips.
Amar Singh Chamkila is shot like a docu-dream. The cinematographer Sylvester Fonseca keeps the visuals raw, real and rugged while editor Aarti Bajaj knows exactly where to cut before the raunchy singing hits the low notes.

Inspired by the story of social media star Qandeel Baloch, who was murdered by her brother in 2016 for what he deemed bringing dishonor on her family through online posts that would be considered mild by Western standards, “Wakhri” is a film that leans on its impressive visuals in order to make it rather pointed comments. It is also worth mentioning that it has just passed government censors in Pakistan, and will be released in the country starting January.
Wakhri is screening at Red Sea Film Festival
Noor is a young widow who teaches in a school in Karachi, with her life goal being to raise funds for an all-girls school in Lahore, fed up by the intense patriarchy of the local society, who has, among other things, girls of school age being part of arranged marriages. U.S.-Pakistani director Iram Parveen Bilal has wrapped principal photography at Pakistan locations on her fourth film “One of a Kind” (aka “Wakhri”).
Inspired by and offering tribute to unapologetic social media influencers like the slain Qandeel Baloch, the film is set in the world of patriarchal social media trolling and the burgeoning underground scene of the so-called “misfits” in modern-day Pakistan. It follows a Pakistani schoolteacher who accidentally unleashes the power of social media, unabashedly challenging the patriarchy. As she tries to keep her online identity a secret, she’s gradually exposed to society’s dangerous underbelly and forced to manage the repercussions.
Bilal describes the project as a “grounded masala” film that promises thought-provoking subject matter whilst also featuring loud Punjabi-language club tracks and Urdu-language rap songs to dance and chant with.
Bilal was named one of the directors to watch by the Alliance of Women Directors in 2020. Her previous film,...

Anurag Kashyap’s Dobaaraa featuring Taapsee Pannu and Pavail Gulati is an official remake of the 2018 Spanish film ‘Mirage’. The film could find a slot in the time travel zone or going by the last scene, it could be a ‘Baar Baar Dekho Returns’. This time around Anurag Kashyap has dabbled with the latest global fad with the term ‘multiverse’ or ‘parallel universe’ or still a ‘time travel’ of sorts. It seems Taapsee is also got into a time loop what with Looop Lapeta and now this.
Dobaaraa is this multi-temporal film, even the title has layered implications; Dobaaraa means ‘again’ as also ‘Do (2) Baaraa (12)’, which is important to the premise, with characters simultaneously existing in parallel universes and manipulating events in the past to alter the future.
Anurag seems to have retained the basic (Mirage) plot and adapted it to the Indian mindset, who may not be too comfortable...

On a day when the media was invited to a screening of his directorial, the mystery drama ‘Dobaaraa’, Anurag Kashyap did what Aamir Khan is famous for doing — let everyone know that he’s still good friends with his ex-wives. ‘Dobaaraa’ is awaiting its big-screen release on August 19.
Kashyap posted a happy picture on Instagram of him with his two ex-wives: Aarti Bajaj, the film editor whom he was married to between 2003 and 2009, and Kalki Koechlin, the actress and author who made her Bollywood debut with his 2009 film, ‘Dev D’. He called them his “two pillars”, to which his daughter Aaliyah responded with one telling word: “Iconic”.

It seems that the aesthetics of Western are having an impact in Hindi cinema nowadays, since after “Gangubai”, “Thar” also implements a similar approach, and even more intently one could say, particularly due to the story and the action here, which also moves towards noir, exploitation and thriller paths.
The story takes place in 1985 in the northern border of India, mostly in Munabao, a small town where Sureka Singh is the chief inspector. As the movie begins, a number of gunmen start shooting the place, while the tortured corpse of a man is found hanging from a tree. Sureka believes the instigators are either dacoit bandits or opium smugglers, since the area bordering Pakistan is infested with them. Along with his deputy, Bhur, he investigates but the case is proven more complicated than he initially thought. The appearance of Siddharth, a young and handsome man who is looking for some...

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is deeply pained by the false allegations of sexual misconduct that have surfaced against him, says his lawyer Priyanka Khimani, who feels that the MeToo movement has been reduced to a mere tool for character assassination.
On Saturday, actress Payal Ghosh alleged that Kashyap tried to molest her in 2014. Kashyap called the charge baseless.
On Monday, Kashyap tweeted a statement from his lawyer that reads: "My client, Anurag Kashyap, has been deeply pained by the false allegations of sexual misconduct that have recently surfaced against him. These allegations are completely false, malicious and dishonest."
"It is sad that a social movement as important as the #MeToo movement has been co-opted by vested interests and reduced to a mere tool for character assassination. Fictitious allegations of this nature seriously undermine the movement and seek to unconscionably trade upon the pain and trauma of the actual victims of sexual harassment and abuse.

In 1980, Saeed Akhtar Mirza had directed a film, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyun Aata Hai?, based on his own story. The film, designed as a slice-of-life film, created ripples as a neo- realism film, during the parallel cinema movement and acquired a cult following.
Thirty-nine years later, keeping the same middle-class angst in mind and character names, writer-director Soumitra Ranade tries to replicate this classic, in his own style.
Narrated in a non-linear and dis-jointed manner, the film's initial act is bit disorienting and yet intriguing. Albert Pinto (Manav Kaul) is projected as a sensitive and caring man till one fine day, without any intimation to his family, he decides to go on a personal mission to eliminate two prominent politicians, who are the cause of his grief. What motivates him on this act of revenge and how he goes about this, forms the crux of the narrative.

Ugly ugly hai biwi, ugly ugly hai husband, ugly ugly hai friends U G L Y, ugly ugly hai rishety, ugly ugly hai kishtey, ugly ugly hai duniya U G L Y. These lines penned by Vineet Singh for the title track summarise the world Anurag Kashyap brings to screen with his latest release. However, as always the world he puts on the screen sadly has very little to do with the fact the writer/director is a creative genius, but more to do with the fact that he observes life very closely. The ugly characters, the ugly situations and the ugly relationships are almost too confrontational because they remind you of things in your lives, your friends’ lives or something you’ve read or heard. After all, truth is stranger than fiction.

Marital Bliss: Kalki Koechlin & Anurag Kashyap
?Yes, we are getting married this year? is what Kalki Koechlin said earlier this year. The actress got married to director Anurag Kashyap over the weekend
38 year old Anurag Kashyap tied the knot to 28 year old Kalki Koechlin on Satdurday in Kalki?s maternal hometown Ooty. The couple has been dating each other since the release of Anurag Kashyap?s Dev D (2009). As the picture suggests it was a South Indian style ceremony attended by close family and friends including Kashyap?s 10 year old daughter Aaliya, from his previous marriage to editor Aarti Bajaj.
Our sources tell us that the event was strictly a private affair with a guest list that was restricted to only 40 people. However, few Bollywood filmmakers like Shahnaab Alam, Vikas Behl, Piyuash Mishra, Vikramadtiya Motwane made it to the wedding. The newlyweds are planning to throw a big bash...
