The Idol was dead long before it ever even took the stage.
On March 1, 2023, more than three months prior to The Idol‘s June 4 premiere, Rolling Stone published a sordid expose on the behind-the-scenes troubles of the HBO show. With a headline proclaiming “The Idol: How HBO’s Next ‘Euphoria’ Became Twisted ‘Torture Porn,'” Cheyenne Roundtree’s excellent, thoroughly-researched feature reported how production on the show had gotten out of hand.
After original co-showrunner Amy Seimetz left the project due to “creative differences” (which apparently included frustration with producer and star Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye’s limited availability), HBO had roughly 75-80% of a finished show that no one was happy with. So they essentially started from scratch with Tesfaye and co-producer/Euphoria creator Sam Levinson in expanded creative roles, ballooning the project’s budget and taking it sharply...

It’s barely July, and The Idol is already over.
The series, created by Sam Levinson, Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Reza Fahim, ended its first season Sunday night with a finale so disorienting that Levinson’s prediction that his latest creation would be “the biggest show of the summer” now seems ridiculous. Conversations around The Idol, which has been met with derision ever since its premiere at Cannes in May, made me wonder if it was, in some twisted way, worth watching. Current speculation about its renewal has altered the question: Is any part of it salvageable?
The Idol’s problems aren’t limited to its gratuitous nudity or juvenile eroticism. The show is dogged by a thin plot and an incoherent narrative. Storylines are blithely picked up and discarded, their remains haunting attentive viewers. Character development? Who needs it. The show is suspiciously incurious about its gallery of maladjusted personas.

Everybody and their mother appreciates Rachel Sennott’s presence in HBO’s The Idol because she’s the new and true queen of comedy. The actress does an incredible job at playing the kind of character that loves to dig a hole for themselves, always chaotic, always stressed, but perfectly dressed (maybe not always). Leia is Jocelyn’s best friend and assistant, and we should all know by now that mixing business with pleasure has its costs. We don’t actually know if Leia and Joss were friends before she became her assistant, but we can go with that narrative anyway. Seeing that Leia has been in Joss’ life for a really long time, it’s only fair that she believes she knows Joss well. When Joss decides she wants to call Tedros over, Leia is the first to oppose this idea. She doesn’t like his aura immediately and...

The Idol, the most controversial show of the year, or one could argue, of the past few years, has come to an end with a fizzle rather than a bang. In terms of substance, we can surely say the last two episodes of The Idol have more than the rest of the show put together. Although that’s not saying much, considering the show was cut down to just 5 episodes. There’s one major loophole in the series, and that’s about Tedros’ character and how he goes from pimp to wimp in a matter of days. The problem also arises because we don’t really know the timeline of the show until it’s mentioned, which happens very briefly in the last episode. Let’s get straight into everything that happens in the last episode of The Idol.

The Idol Season 1 was supposed to have six episodes in total, but it was revealed that creative differences had taken the show in a slightly new direction. As a result, the season would be one episode less.
Even without knowing about the behind-the-scenes happening with the production, anyone who watched The Idol Season 1 Episode 5 could feel a massive shift in the show's tone as everything felt unfocused and rushed.
The first half of the episode saw Jocelyn go all out to try and reign in her life and career that'd been falling apart.
To do that, she needed to get from under Tedros' influence and then put on a showcase for The Suits, who made sure the cogs in the machine that is her career rotated were well greased, and no teeth were missing.
That whole scene at the house must have been the only thing that felt true to the show.

Goodbye, angels.
“The Idol” — or at least its first season — came to a conclusion after five episodes on Sunday night, but not without the usual dose of darkly sexual ups and downs for its jewel-eyed, rat-tailed stars.
Titled “Jocelyn Forever,” the episode begins with Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) at her home, working on a song with prolific hip-hop producer Mike Dean (played by himself). As she sings lyrics Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye) prompted her to write — “My kinda love / Force me, choke me ’till I pass out” — it becomes clear that the ex-pimp’s coke habit has caught up to him. Sweating, with his hair beginning to fall out of his famous rat-tail, he interrupts the jam session to give some notes. Jocelyn lets him know he isn’t welcome to do that anymore.
“You’re gonna kick out your only source of inspiration?” Tedros jeers. Jocelyn shoots back, “I...

The Idol wrapped up its (truncated) five-episode freshman run on Sunday — and Jocelyn’s season of idol worship might just be over.
As the season finale opens, Jocelyn is recording her new track “Tough Love” with Tedros’ hand-picked producer Mike Dean, with charming lyrics like “Hold me and choke me until I pass out.” The song is coming together, but when Tedros tries to get involved, she abruptly turns on him: “You’ve served your purpose.” Jocelyn laughs to her friends that her first meeting with Tedros was a total set-up by her former backup dancer Dyanne, calling him “a...

Note: This story contains spoilers from the “The Idol” episode 5.
“The Idol” finale is finally here and the HBO drama held onto its title as the most scandalous show of the summer until the very end.
Episode 4 of the Sam Levinson-created show left off with a grim outlook for Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) after the pop star gave her backup dancer and so-called friend Dyanne (Jennie Kim) the green light to take Jocelyn’s song, “World Class Sinner,” as her own. If her carefully planned comeback getting destroyed wasn’t enough, her personal life was also left in the toilet after learning that Dyanne and Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye) previously knew each other and had a relationship before Jocelyn and Tedros met.
Seeking revenge, Jocelyn called up her ex-boyfriend, Rob, to come to her house, who succeeded in making Tedros jealous. Jocelyn’s plan backfired, of course, when Tedros...

For Moses Sumney, being cast in Sam Levinson’s controversial HBO series “The Idol” was, as he tells Variety, “strangely cosmic.”
The singer-songwriter — whose two studio albums, “Aromanticism” and “Græ,” were released to critical acclaim — first came into contact with Levinson when he synced Sumney’s song, “Me in 20 Years,” for Rue’s special episode of “Euphoria” in late 2020. Sumney, who had been taking virtual acting classes during the Covid-19 pandemic, then found himself auditioning for the role of Elliot (Dominic Fike) in Season 2 of the series.
“I auditioned kind of on a whim, and it weirdly went really well and went pretty far until I think the powers that be were like, ‘So, I don’t know if he looks 16 years old,'” Sumney says with a laugh. “Then Sam called me and was like, ‘I love you so much as an actor, I’m gonna keep you in mind.

It might be too late to back away from The Idol now, and episode 4 takes the cake for creating more havoc in my mind than any other episode. But, I must admit, I have a more positive reaction to episode 4 than any of the previous ones, so I’m not utterly devastated that I had to stick around. When Leia says something along the lines of “it’s really messed up that we’re all just watching Jocelyn get abused and not saying anything,” I felt that and maybe I’m starting to see a little bit of the point the show is trying to make. Until now, it wasn’t the sleaze that was bothersome because that’s a common trait in HBO shows, but personally, I found it quite boring for such an interesting topic. Aesthetics and Lily-Rose Depp aside, there wasn’t much to anticipate, but episode 4 proves me wrong.

A lot of good art comes from pain. However, that is not meant to be interpreted in the literal sense, yet Tedros had been doing that for a long time to his "people."
Jocelyn tried to create a hit with Tedros and his bag of bizarre tricks on The Idol Season 1 Episode 4. After careful research, Destiny uncovered something about Tedros' past that made sense because of how he behaved.
A lot was happening in the episode, and as a result, most storylines felt rushed. If you tackle something as expansive as Hollywood or the life of a pop star and those surrounding them, five episodes are not enough to craft something worth following.
In an attempt to circumnavigate that glaring shortcoming, events in the episode felt like they couldn't wait to pass so that the next thing could happen.
A lot came up character-wise, especially with Tedros and Jocelyn.
Tedros was a proper sociopath.

We’re about halfway done with 2023, and any cable drama premieres that come along in the second half of the year have a new viewership number to try to beat. The Hollywood Reporter shares the news that the Walking Dead spin-off The Walking Dead: Dead City (check out our review Here) is now the biggest cable drama debut of the year, having drawn in 683,000 viewers as it aired on AMC last Sunday, with viewers of the simulcasts on BBC America and IFC, plus replays, boosting the number of viewers to 1.12 million. The Hollywood Reporter notes that “Dead City also became the top series premiere ever on the AMC+ streaming service, in both viewers and acquisition, surpassing Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches (though as usual with streaming platforms, detailed viewing figures aren’t made public).”
Of course, 1.12 million is far below the number of viewers that used to tune in for...

That was an emotional rollercoaster.
The Idol Season 1 Episode 3 dived into Joecyln's complicated and traumatic past to explore why she was stuck in a rut.
Just when we thought Tedros couldn't be more messed up, he outdid himself at every turn, from sexually assaulting people who were trying to work to physically assaulting people at work.
It became clear that Joss and Tedros were developing a complex interdependent relationship.
We established that Jocelyn had developed unhealthy attitudes towards sex, which was clear in how she approached sexual situations. There must be a risk involved, whether physically or in general.
It has to involve some kinky fetish play, and Tedros preyed on that.
Sex is powerful as it is one of the rarest times two people bare themselves to each other. Even if no one planned on it being emotional, somehow, emotions might find a way into the situation, and that's when it can become murky.

‘The Idol’ Episode 3: Tedros Takes Control Over Jocelyn With a Sexual Shopping Spree and a Hairbrush
Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from the third episode of HBO’s “The Idol,” titled “Daybreak,” now streaming on Max.
The third episode of “The Idol” is here, and it further pushes the show’s already-salacious story, with a disturbing scene at the end that illustrates how thoroughly Jocelyn is under Tedros’ control.
“Daybreak” opens with the rat-tailed Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye) taking Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) out for a shopping spree and performing oral sex on her in the backseat of a convertible driven by her assistant Leia (Rachel Sennott). As he picks out skimpy clothing for Jocelyn to try on, Tedros threatens a sales associate: “Let me catch you looking at her again, I’ll fucking drag you down Rodeo. I’ll fucking curb-stomp you.”
We see Leia call Chaim (Hank Azaria) to express her concerns about Tedros’ growing power over Jocelyn. In a flashback to the morning,...

Episode 2 of The Idol may be significantly better than Episode 1 only because of Lily-Rose Depp’s command of the screen. Apart from that, it’s still an aimless plot that makes less sense the further down you go. The show claims to represent the dark side of the music industry and Hollywood in general but switches lanes to cults and exploitation. As we already know, the series is deep in controversy because of a toxic behind-the-scenes mess and a whole reshoot situation after the original female director left and Sam Levinson got on board.

When we think about the fact that Abel was unhappy that the show had cast a bigger lens on Jocelyn rather than Tedros, our skepticism about seeing the show makes complete sense. The Idol Episode 2 had some particular scenes that were so strange that I got second-hand embarrassment for everyone involved while watching them.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from the second episode of HBO’s “The Idol,” titled “Double Fantasy,” now streaming on Max.
The sophomore episode of “The Idol” has arrived, and following last week’s controversial and divisive series premiere, the stakes within the show have been raised. Troubled pop phenom Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) has a tortured video shoot, and then later invites her love interest, cult leader Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye) and some of his followers to her house for a night of debauchery. The sex, drugs and industry drama is amped up compared to the first episode in an hour of television sure to start online discourse.
This episode is difficult to watch without considering reports of behind-the-scenes drama that nearly derailed the show. Notably, director Amy Seimetz left the series in April 2022 amid reshoots and shifts in creative direction, including a report that Tesfaye believed that...

HBO’s newest original drama, “The Idol,” delves into the dark side of fame.
Co-created and co-executive produced by Sam Levinson, Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Reza Fahim, it stars Lily-Rose Depp as Jocelyn, a pop star whose antics have captured the public’s attention (think Britney or Miley).
The logline for the series reads: “After a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) last tour, she’s determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America. Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?”
The drama is just unfolding, so if you’re eager to know exactly when you can see new episodes, we’ve assembled a handy guide to “The Idol” release schedule and what time new episodes air.

We’re just one month away from the June 18th premiere of the Walking Dead spin-off The Walking Dead: Dead City, which follows the characters of Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as they go on a rescue mission to the zombie-infested island of Manhattan. Today, a full trailer for the show has arrived online, and you can watch it in the embed above.
Eli Jorné, who has been a writer and co-executive producer on The Walking Dead for multiple seasons, serves as showrunner on The Walking Dead: Dead City. This show will see Maggie and Negan traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror.
Cohan and Morgan have been playing Maggie and Negan since season 2 and 6 (respectively) of The Walking Dead.

We live in a world where we're constantly discouraged from following our dreams - we're taught we're better off letting them go to pursue more practical ambitions. Sometimes these voices come from our parents; sometimes they come from other relatives, friends, even teachers and mentors. Eventually, they start coming from us. It wasn't until Puerto Rican singer and songwriter Paopao, born Paola Nicole Marrero Rodríguez, finally stopped listening to those voices - putting her fears and excuses aside - that she was able to make her dreams of being a music artist happen.

Although an insane number of zombies, or walkers if you prefer, were dispatched over the course of The Walking Dead‘s eleven seasons, it was always other people that were the greatest threat to the group of survivors the show followed. And while that will probably continue to be the case on the upcoming spin-off The Walking Dead: Dead City – which focuses on the characters Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and is set to reach AMC and AMC+ sometime in June 2023 – we’re also going to be seeing some interesting zombie moments on the new show. In fact, Scott M. Gimple, the Chief Content Officer of the Walking Dead Universe, says The Walking Dead: Dead City will feature a particularly awesome, disgusting, terrifying walker.

The Walking Dead wrapped up its 11 season run back in November and this year brings the eighth and final season of Fear the Walking Dead, but that doesn’t mean the overall franchise is coming to an end. There’s the Rick & Michonne spin-off to look forward to in 2024, the Daryl spin-off (The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon) coming along later this year, and The Walking Dead: Dead City, a spin-off that will follow the characters of Maggie and Negan (played by Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan). It has now been announced that The Walking Dead: Dead City will be reaching AMC and AMC+ sometime in June 2023.
Since that’s just five months away, we should be hearing a specific date soon. Fear the Walking Dead season 8 consists of twelve episodes and the season will be split in two. The season begins airing on May 14th, then after six...

The Walking Dead has come to an end, but Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan will continue playing Maggie and Negan in the spin-off series The Walking Dead: Dead City (which was formerly known as Isle of the Dead). A premiere date for the show hasn’t been announced yet, but AMC has unveiled a teaser trailer, and you can check that out in the embed above! The 20 second teaser is worth a look, especially to see a really gross moment involving a zombie that’s in an advanced stage of decomposition.

The Walking Dead is over, but there are several spin-offs on the way. Norman Reedus will continue playing the character Daryl Dixon on a spin-off that takes place in France and is going by the title The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan will be back as Negan and Maggie for The Walking Dead: Dead City (which was formerly known as Isle of the Dead). Andrew Lincoln and Dana Gurira will reunite as Rick Grimes and Michonne for their own limited series. Plus there’s going to be more Fear the Walking Dead and Tales of the Walking Dead. While marking the end of The Walking Dead at the finale’s premiere event, Reedus, Morgan, and Cohan also took a moment to discuss their upcoming spin-offs.
