“ThunderCats”, the 130-episode, 1985 cartoon series will be adapted into a live-action sword ‘n sorcery feature, to be directed by Adam Wingard (“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”):
“…’ThunderCats’ follows the adventures of a team of heroic, cat-like humanoid aliens on a planet called ‘Third Earth’. The series plot begins with the dying planet ‘Thundera’ meeting its end, forcing the ThunderCats to flee their homeworld…”
"My version is going to be 100% the ’80’s version”, said Wingard about the new film.
"When I was in high school, I was so into ‘Thundercats’ that I wrote this 270-something-page screenplay, like hand-written screenplay on it. It was my biggest dream growing up, to make a Thundercat’s movie, and so, here I am with the ability to actually do that. I’m still kind of fulfilling that dream."

Accomplished jazz musician Kamasi Washington has confirmed his new album, Fearless Movement, set for release on May 3rd.
Fearless Movement is Kamasi Washington’s first album in six years, and the saxophonist refers to the record as his “dance album”: “It’s not literal,” Washington clarifies in a statement, “Dance is movement and expression, and in a way it’s the same thing as music —expressing your spirit through your body. That’s what this album is pushing.”
Another significant theme of Fearless Movement is new fatherhood, inspired by Washington’s experience having his first child several years ago. In addition to his daughter appearing on the album, Fearless Movement features contributions from André 3000, Thundercat, George Clinton, Bj the Chicago Kid, D Smoke, and fellow member of Washington’s collaborative group Dinner Party, Terrace Martin.

Michael Gordon isn’t one for subtlety. The songs that the New Jersey artist makes as Mk.gee froth and fizz and occasionally freak out, making their unwieldy production not just noticeable, but an integral part of the songwriting. Take “New Low,” the brisk two-minute opener to his exceptional debut album Two Star & The Dream Police: its percussion has the lightness and congeniality of a schoolyard hand-clapping game, but it’s set atop a wobbling synth bass that underlines his contemplative lyrics. He sounds both resentful and filled with pity, pointing...

The last time Sean Combs’ music competed at the Grammys, a then-unknown Mark Zuckerberg had just created Facebook, Nipplegate occurred at the Super Bowl and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King garnered a record-tying 11 Oscars. It was 2004, and Combs, aka Diddy, won best rap performance by a group or duo — his third Grammy — for the thumping hit “Shake Ya Tailfeather,” featuring Nelly and Murphy Lee. The track appeared on the Bad Boys II soundtrack, which Diddy executive produced and released on his Bad Boy label.
So his return to the Grammys, two decades later with a nomination for best progressive R&b album for his The Love Album: Off the Grid, is a major feat — and a proud moment for the artist. Some would even call the nomination a win (though we should note that there is zero chance his album can compete with Sza’s...

This past July marked 10 years since Thundercat released his sophomore album, Apocalypse. Now, the virtuoso bassist is commemorating the release with a deluxe reissue, titled Apocalypse 10-Year Edition, due on March 1st, 2024 via Brainfeeder.
Produced by Flying Lotus, the original Apocalypse featured 12 tracks, all presenting Thundercat’s unique sound and capacity for expression. The reissue will arrive with two previously-unheard bonus tracks: “Before I loved myself ‘I’ pooped my ankles (true)” featuring Taylor Graves and Thundercat’s late collaborator, Austin Peralta; and “Paris” featuring Mono/Poly.
Thundercat and Peralta were close collaborators, with the latter appearing on the former’s debut album, The Golden Age of Apocalypse, in 2011. Peralta’s death in 2012 at the age of 22 hit Thundercat particularly hard, which influenced Apocalypse.

Thundercat has dropped a new song as part of Listerine’s new campaign in support of a non-profit creating more opportunities for diversity in dentistry. Stream the track, which features samples of mouthwash sounds, below.
Listerine’s The Whoa Collection collaboration with the creative agency Compound also features a limited edition bottle design by Philly visual artist King Saladeen. The campaign is designed to drive awareness and help close the diversity gap in dentistry within the Black community, with up to $150,000 of its proceeds going toward the Increasing Diversity in Dentistry (Idid) program.
According to a press release, only 4% of dentists in the United States are Black, and there is simultaneously a major disparity in oral health care access: a reported 40% of Black adults are living with untreated dental cavities. Founded by Dr. Jeanette Sabir-Holloway in 2010, Idid aims to change that by providing opportunities for historically underrepresented populations interested in becoming dental professionals.

Blur are officially back with The Ballad of Darren, their first album in eight years. Listen to the complete project below via Apple Music and Spotify.
Featuring singles “St. Charles Square” and “The Narcissist” — the latter of which we named Song of the Week — The Ballad of Darren was produced by James Ford. In a statement, Damon Albarn described it as “an aftershock record, reflection and comment on where we find ourselves now.”
Albarn spoke more extensively about the project in our recent cover story on Blur. The LP marked the band’s most collaborative project in years, with bassist Alex James and guitarist Graham Coxon insisting on working out its 10 songs with Albarn. As a result, the singer called The Ballad of Darren “the first legit [Blur] album since [1999’s] 13.”
In his review of the album for Consequence, Associate Editor Paolo Ragusa called The Ballad of Darren an “enjoyable, heartfelt, and contemplative record.

From the moment he first heard Tame Impala, Thundercat felt a profound sense of connection to Kevin Parker — which made his desire to work with the Australian psych whiz more of a need than a want. “There’s a part of me that felt like we’d be in a band together,” the bassist and songwriter tells Rolling Stone with a laugh, adding: “Even if we weren’t in a band together, it just felt like we were definitely long lost bandmates from another era.”

In what’s destined to be the next viral TikTok audio, Thundercat and Tame Impala have teamed up for a collaborative new song called “No More Lies.” Check it out below.
Marking Thundercat’s first release since 2020’s It Is What It Is, “No More Lies” pairs Stephen Bruner’s classic slip-n-slide bass with Kevin Parker’s lush instrumentation as the two sing about the end of a relationship. “It’s not your fault, I’m just kind of ass,” Thundercat croons, before Tame Impala adds, “I’ll just be on my own.”
“I’ve wanted to work with Kevin since the very first Tame Impala album,” Thundercat said in a statement. “I feel that I knew that us working together would be special. I’ve been excited about this song for a long time and hope to create more with Kevin in the future.”

Gorillaz have released their eighth album, Cracker Island. Stream it below via Apple Music or Spotify.
Originally announced last August alongside the release of “New Gold” — a mesmerizing single featuring Tame Impala and Bootie Brown — Cracker Island not only augments the band’s canon of inquisitive pop gems, but also shows the animated quartet collaborating with an impressive list of guests, including Bad Bunny, Stevie Nicks, Thundercat, Beck, and more. With these parts combined, the sum of the album is an exciting plunge back into the search for meaning in the modern world.
For their part, the virtual band finds itself in the perfect setting for their search. 2-D, Noodle, Russel Hobbs, and Murdoc Niccals have left their West London home base for new digs in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, where fame-lust, toxic consumerism, and the occult blend together as easily as exhaust fumes and the Angeleno air.

Gorillaz, Cracker Island review: Damon Albarn’s band of apes return with their best album since 2005
“I’m on one per cent, but I’m there with you,” croons 2D on Gorillaz’ most enjoyable album since 2005’s Demon Days. It’s a sentiment that reflects the record’s commitment to finding collective fun in the face of isolating fatigue. Gorillaz have always been an apocalypse party of an act, but now, they’re laughing again. There’s a loose-limbed elation to the indie-funk grooves they find, with guests ranging from Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks to Australian psych-rockers Tame Impala and LA bass-bouncer Thundercat. And a sleepy solidarity in the more melancholy moments, which include a tender acoustic duet with Beck.
Britain’s first virtual band was created in 2001 by Damon Albarn and Tank Girl artist Jamie Hewlett in response to what the earnest indie purists saw as the “manufactured” state of chart music. But over the next two decades, the project has given the Blur...

This Little Light will see the longtime Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist excavating some of his most notable early musical memories with a who’s-who of guests; Rick Rubin, Cynthia Erivo, Thundercat, Patti Smith, and Margo Price are all confirmed to appear on upcoming episodes. Better yet, the pod will benefit the non-profit Flea founded back in 2001, the Silverlake Conservatory of Music.

There are two dials at Gorillaz HQ which determine 1) how many guests will be on an album, and 2) how elaborate its broader cartoon lore will be. 2018’s The Now Now, positioned as a solo album by Damon Albarn’s “2-D” alter ego, had minimal guests and only the slightest bit of extra-textual hijinks. On the other hand, 2020’s wildly overstuffed Song Machine project, in which every track was accompanied by at least one guest and a new cartoon detailing the band’s ongoing dystopian adventures, turned both dials to 11. Every track was a single,...

Vic Mensa peels off some tasty licks while falling through the sky in the wild new video for “Strawberry Louis Vuitton.”
The tender, soulful tune features contributions from Thundercat as well as R&b artist Maeta. In the video, co-directed by Mensa and Danielle DeGrasse-Alston, Mensa goes skydiving with his guitar, strumming and singing the whole way down before finally landing cooly in a field where he’s got a female companion waiting for him.
In a statement, Mensa explained that “Strawberry Louis Vuitton” was largely inspired by the late designer Virgil Abloh.

This year’s Grammy nominations for Best New Artist were … unexpected, to say the least. If you look back at the odds for the Grammy nominations on Gold Derby, only five of the expected 10 contenders actually made it in, those being Latto, Muni Long, Anitta, Wet Leg, and Omar Apollo. There were definitely a lot of surprises when it came to more niche genre-specific artists, and perhaps two of the biggest surprises were jazz artists Samara Joy and Domi and Jd Beck. But don’t count out the jazzists for the win here.
Samara Joy and Domi and Jd Beck represent different branches of jazz. Joy is more of a traditional jazz vocalist. Her sophomore record, “Linger Awhile,” which is nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Album, features a collection of timeless standards sung by Joy with her phenomenal voice. Joy is perhaps most similar to previous Best New Artist winner Esperanza Spalding,...

While some people accuse the Grammys of being a popularity contest, this is not really accurate. The award show often features many acts that are not widely known by the general public, some of which even go on to win big. This year, among the Harry Styleses and Beyonces of music, let’s consider which under-the-radar artist could get their moment to finally shine in the mainstream.

It’s Tuesday morning, less than 24 hours after she’s won an Emmy, and Quinta Brunson’s voice is hoarse. The days of pre-award festivities leading up to the Sept. 12 ceremony were frantic, starting with Variety’s Showrunners Dinner. Then came the Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony in downtown Los Angeles, the Governors Gala and Disney’s post-Emmy celebration, which spilled into the next day. Something had to give.
Yet when the “Abbott Elementary” creator and star sits down for an in-depth interview with Variety, her creative voice is clear and strong.
On the morning after the Emmys, she’s back on Warner Bros.’ Burbank lot, about to take part in a table read and start production on a new episode of the hit ABC comedy. Before the grind resumes, however, Brunson stops by the studio commissary’s executive dining room for breakfast and a quick conversation about the Wbtv comedy...

What makes a great "Hot Ones" episode? An unshakable serenity from its guests? Intriguing celebrity anecdotes? A healthy dose of schadenfreude? For this writer, a lot of the "Hot Ones" appeal comes from watching your faves suffer a little bit. The First We Feast phenomenon is all about watching celebrities chow down on the spiciest wings on the planet, and some of the best episodes often feature uncontrollable coughing fits, trippy revelations, or a whole lot of milk-chugging — ideally all three, but I'm not picky.
That said, it doesn't always have to be complete misery. A genuine connection with host Sean Evans is also very important: it helps the first half of the interview, over some of the milder wings, go over a lot smoother. There's a delicate balance to maintain, and the "best" episode might be different for everyone. Natalie Portman's unflappable composure won't be as fun for...

Gru and the minions are back in an all new blast from the past adventure. “Minions: The Rise of Gru” takes viewers back to Gru’s childhood where, on the brink of adolescence, Gru wants nothing more than to join The Sinister Six, a group of villains notorious for their collaboration in crime.
The adventures of all these characters as well as the minions are backed by a reimagined soundtrack full of ’70s hits.
Produced by Jack Antonoff, the soundtrack includes St. Vincent’s rendition of Lipps Inc’s 1979 hit “Funkytown,” H.E.R.’s version of “Dance to the Music” from Sly and the Family Stone in 1967, Bleachers’ rendition of John Lennon’s 1970 song “Instant Karma” and Phoebe Bridgers’ version of The Carpenters’ 1972 ballad “Goodbye to Love.” Even the Minions get a few spotlight moments like when they sing Paul Simon’s “Cecelia.”

A series of wildly colorful posters with an unusual collection of artists have appeared in London in recent days, listing Diana Ross and Tame Impala across the top, along with Phoebe Bridgers, St. Vincent, Thundercat, Brockhampton, Caroline Polacheck, RZA, Brittany Howard, Bleachers, Tierra Whack, Weyes Blood, Kali Uchis, H.E.R. and others, with a “produced by Jack Antonoff” listed at the bottom.
