Blue Ice Docs has acquired Canadian rights to Spettacolo, Jeff Malmberg and Chris Shellen’s follow-up to 2010’s Marwencol.
Spettacolo won the special jury prize for documentary feature at the Dallas International Film Festival and received its international premiere at this year’s Hot Docs.
Blue Ice Docs plans an autumn theatrical release for the film that centres on a village in Tuscany where the people confront their issues by turning their lives into a play.
Their singular experiment became a 50-year tradition.
The deal was made at Hot Docs with Robin Smith of Blue Ice Docs in conjunction with Andrew Herwitz of The Film Sales Company and Malmberg.
Grasshopper Film acquired Us rights to Spettacolo at the end of last month.

The $500,000 project marks the follow-up to 2012’s Coast Modern from directors Michael Bernard and Gavin Froome and producer Leah Mallen of Twofold Films. Thunderbird’s Reunion Pictures will serve as executive producer.

Tel Aviv-based sales outfit Cinephil has sold Joshua Oppenheimer’s well-received doc The Look of Silence to France, Canada, Japan and Australia.
Wild Bunch picked up for France, in a deal negotiated with acquisitions head Vincent Maraval, Blue Ice Docs took Canadian rights in a deal with acquisitions head Robin Smith, while Madman Entertainment secured Australian rights with head of theatrical acquisitions Paul Tonta and co-founder/executive director Paul Wiegard inking the deal.
Transformer have nabbed Japanese rights in a deal negotiated with manager of acquisitions Shinichiro Kato.
Negotiations are underway in Poland, Germany, Spain, Benelux, Hong Kong and Latin America while prior acquisitions for the Venice and Toronto title include Drafthouse Films and Participant Media (Us), Dogwoof (UK) and Wonder (Italy).

The New Distribution panel will reveal how the vacuum in the Canadian distribution sector is quickly being filled up by aggressive new players such as Pacific Northwest Pictures and Indiecan, and how more established companies such as Kinosmith and Phase Four Films are stepping up to the plate. Attendees will learn about the new distributors, what they are looking for, and how and when to best approach them with their next film project. Even if you haven’t heard of Robin Smith, you’re probably familiar with her work. Smith was the head of the Tennessee Republican Party during the '08 presidential campaign and approved the distribution of some of the most underhanded and insidious anti-Obama propaganda to appear during the election. You may recall, for example, the video that the Tennessee G.O.P. released hammering Michelle Obama for her comment about being “proud of her country for the "first time” in “her adult lifetime." (The ad prompted Barack to tell critics to "lay off" his wife.) You may also remember the Tennessee G.O.P. press release titled "Anti-Semites for Obama" that pointedly referred to the candidate as "Barack Hussein Obama." Both smears drew national condemnation, even from Republican Party leaders. But one gets the feeling that if the Party gave into its true impulses and elected Ann Coulter or Rush Limbaugh its leader tomorrow,...
