Scripted formats were placed front and center of BBC Studios’ panel at Series Mania, as the Doctor Who seller confirmed it is making up to three more versions of Ghosts and has bought Spain’s Brutal Media.
One of the hit BBC show’s creators, Simon Farnaby, recently told a podcast the show – which has achieved smash ratings on CBS in the U.S. – is being remade in Germany and Spain.
Matt Forde, who runs BBC Studios Global Entertainment, confirmed “there are two or three other versions in the works.”
“We love those shows and love the UK versions,” said Forde. “We are finding ways into these worlds in local creative communities.” Ghosts was recently renewed for a fourth CBS season, although the BBC version has ended.
Deadline revealed recently that BBC Studios’ deal with Lionsgate, which spawned the likes of Ghosts, had elapsed, but Forde was bullish about the scripted formats game.

Exclusive: Channel 4 has defended the provenance of The Couple Next Door amid concerns from producers that it was penned by the husband of the UK broadcaster’s head of drama.
Two sources told Deadline that The Couple Next Door has been a talking point in the British drama community in recent days after producers joined the dots between Channel 4 drama chief Caroline Hollick and screenwriter David Allison.
Channel 4 has argued that Hollick recused herself from the commissioning process, but it has not stopped the broadcaster’s suppliers from questioning if nepotism played a part in the Starz co-production making it to screen.
Despite being recused, Channel 4 said The Couple Next Door was “commissioned by” Hollick in a press release announcing the series in March. She was also quoted in the press notice, trumpeting the drama as an “addictive, emotional roller-coaster.” Her relationship with Allison was not declared.

Amazon Prime Video is to co-premiere The Handmaid’s Tale for the first time in the UK with Channel 4.
The fifth season of Hulu’s original will land on both networks later this year in a deal rarely seen in the UK TV world.
MGM is international distributor of the dystopian Margaret Atwood thriller, which is created by Bruce Miller and stars Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes and O-t Fagbenle, and the move comes just a few months after Amazon acquired MGM, thereby giving Prime Video access to its distributor’s catalog worldwide.
Given these circumstances, Deadline understands both sides have worked together on launch plans and feel the agreement is reasonable. The UK deal will not impact the show in the U.S.

With this move, head of features and format, Sarah Lazenby, who commissioned hit show “The Great British Bake Off,” is leaving Channel 4 after nearly six years. The existing formats and features slate will be distributed across other departments, including factual entertainment, entertainment and features and daytime — including responsibility for More4 commissioning — which will be led by Jo Street.
