Those closest to Elizabeth Edwards said their final goodbyes to her at an emotional service in Edenton, N.C., Saturday. The funeral for Edwards, who died on Dec. 7 at age 61 after a grueling six-year battle with breast cancer, was held at Edenton Street United Methodist Church. Elizabeth Edwards, former wife of Senator John Edwards, has died after a long and courageous battle against cancer. She was 61.

The family released this statement: "Elizabeth Anania Edwards, mother, author, advocate died today at her home in Chapel Hill, surrounded by her family. Today we have lost the comfort of Elizabeth's presence but she remains the heart of this family. We love her and will never know anyone more inspiring or full of life. On behalf of Elizabeth we want to express our gratitude to the thousands of kindred spirits who moved and inspired her along the way. Your support and prayers touched our entire family."

Edwards died at her Chapel Hill home, where family and friends, including her estranged husband John, had gathered in recent days after doctors informed her that her cancer had spread and recommended she not undergo further treatment.
