The Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced plans Wednesday for 52 world premieres and 78 U.S. premieres spanning a total of 43 countries throughout the 11-day event.
“At a time where there’s a dwindling of movie theater attendance, the role of film festivals has never been more important,” said Sbiff executive director Roger Durling. “At Sbiff, with the 38th edition, our marching orders are clear, to celebrate movies and to nurture and exalt the film community, the artists as well as the cinephiles. It’s a great slate with 43 countries represented.”
The festival starts Feb. 8 with the world premiere of “Miranda’s Victim” from director-producer Michelle Danner. The period piece is set in the year 1963 and documents the true story of Patricia “Trish” Weir (Abigal Breslin), who attempts to put her abuser behind bars after being kidnapped and sexually assaulted at 18 years old.

The fest will also offer a variety of free educational programs, including Mike’s Field Trip to the Movies (for 4,000-plus fourth through sixth grade students from low-income schools throughout Santa Barbara County), which this year will feature a screening of Guillermo del Toro...

Exclusive: Rob Lowe’s directorial debut in the documentary realm, Madness in the Hills, will premiere on Peacock on Friday.
The film tells the story of the mudslides that killed 23 people in Southern California in January 2018, including many friends and neighbors of Lowe. His community in Montecito was in the center of the destruction, which resulted from the Thomas Fire, which burned for more than a month at the end of 2017. (Check out the trailer above.)
Soil scorched by the fire was less able to absorb rainwater, so when heavy seasonal rains fell in January, massive mudslides resulted. Entire hillsides came down, sweeping boulders, cars and houses into the destructive path of the slide.
Lowe filmed his conversations with survivors and first responders, who share their harrowing personal experiences. The film also explores the role of climate change in exacerbating the destruction.

National Geographic has brought Emmy award-winning composers Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein on board to score its upcoming docudrama “Valley of the Boom,” Variety has learned exclusively.
Dixon and Stein are best known for their work on the soundtrack of “Stranger Things,” for which they received two Grammy nominations as well as an Emmy for outstanding main title theme music.
“We have long been inspired by the rich history and bright music from the 1990s, so when we learned of National Geographic’s ‘Valley of the Boom,’ we were thrilled to be collaborating,” said Dixon and Stein. “Sound shapes story, and we want this soundtrack to reflect the unconventional yet exhilarating era Matthew Carnahan exposes in the series.”

Much like the life of the mammoth pro wrestling personality it profiles, “Nature Boy” is both a celebration and a warning siren for would-be aspirants to fame and fortune. The latest installment of Espn’s “30 for 30” documentary series is under no delusion that Ric Flair didn’t enjoy (or at many points, bask in) his popularity as one of the biggest pro athletes in the world. But Rory Karpf‘s film also provides some helpful and needed context for the man that he was when he wasn’t landing pile drives. Those two figures may have eventually blurred together to the point of being unrecognizable, but the film does an admirable job of trying to distinguish between the two.
In true biographical fashion, “Nature Boy” charts Flair’s upbringing in an adoptive home, through his less-than-stellar academic career, to the origins of his wrestling superstardom. Eventually embracing a career that he initially shied away from,...
