Paris-based distributor Arp Selection has acquired French rights for Paul Schrader’s Oh, Canada ahead of its world premiere in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
Oscar nominee Schrader wrote and directed the film, which reunites him with Richard Gere some 40 years after their collaboration on American Gigolo, with other members of the cast including Uma Thurman, Michael Imperioli and Jacob Elordi.
Schrader has adapted the drama from late writer Russell Banks’ 2021 novel Foregone, about a renowned documentary maker with secrets from the past. It is Schrader’s second adaptation of a work by Banks, after 1997 mystery thriller Affliction, starring Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek.
“We’ve been long-time admirers of Paul Schrader’s work and devout readers of Russell Banks’ books,” said Arp Selection head Michèle Halberstadt.

Some of Hollywood’s most significant players return to the drawing board this Monday with plans to engage in another round of negotiations with SAG-AFTRA. Those in attendance are Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, Disney CEO Bob Iger, and NBCUniversal Studio Group chairman and chief content officer Donna Langley. The new meeting brings hope for closure to the ongoing strike that has kept SAG-AFTRA members from participating in film and television projects, with some exceptions.
The new meeting follows the end of the WGA strike. After months of back-and-forth and determination for better work conditions, the writers’ group recently agreed to return to work. Usually, a swarm of labor relations executives negotiate on behalf of the studios alongside the AMPTP. However, “by the time the CEOs began to engage again [with the WGA], they did so understanding that these problems that we were bringing to the table needed to be handled seriously,...

Now that the WGA and the AMPTP have finally found a similar plane of terms to agree on, the picket lines have thinned out with the writers going back to work. The big gains in the deal that the studios have made with the writers similarly apply to what the Screen Actors’ Guild has been fighting for since joining the strike. It is said that the resolved issues with the writers, which include the regulated use of AI for films and TV shows as well as residual pay for streaming projects, can also transfer to the actors’ terms. The actors’ union and the studios are scheduled to resume negotiations on Monday.
The resolution of the writers’ strike could hopefully mean a similar resolution for SAG-AFTRA as well. Once the actors’ union and the studios reach their own agreement, all the projects that have been put on pause will be back on after months of striking.

Pencils ready.
Now that the writers strike is over, Hollywood studios are gearing up to get production rolling again — once the other half of this year’s dual strike, the ongoing SAG-AFTRA walkout, is finally settled.
From “Star Trek” to “Superman: Legacy” to “Abbott Elementary” to “Wednesday,” every studio, network and streamer has priority film and TV projects that they hope to fast-track back into development or production. Audiences cannot survive on reruns alone. Had the strike lasted a few weeks longer, the 2023-24 broadcast season would have become even more dependent on unscripted shows and programs imported from streaming platforms and overseas markets.
Several big movie projects could see preproduction resume quickly. Paramount is hoping to have writers fine-tuning scripts for its planned reboot of “Star Trek” and its adaptation of Tom Clancy’s “Rainbow Six.” And Warner Bros. would dearly love to see Matt Reeves hunched over his computer,...

Mo Abudu, founder and CEO of Nigeria- and London-based EbonyLife Media thinks its about time Africans started speaking for themselves, in Hollywood and around the world.
“I’m sick and tired of having my story told by some stranger,” she told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View.
Abudu, who was born in London and has deep family roots in Nigeria, has been called “the most powerful woman in global media” by Forbes and landed on the publication’s World’s 100 Most Powerful Women. Having built EbonyLife Media from the ground up, she told TheWrap she is on a mission to empower Africans to tell stories that go beyond slavery and the legacy of that horrific period in history.
“As a continent, we have remained silent for centuries,” Abudu said. “The only part of our history that ever gets broadcast or made into features or documentaries is that era of slave trade.

Right after Elsa Ramo, managing partner of Ramo Law PC, graduated law school, she made an “unconventional” decision. Instead of working for an established firm, she set up a trailer on the Universal Studios backlot in the summer of 2005.
Her business cards may have come from Kinko’s and she may have had to use the bathroom on the “Desperate Housewives” set, but her bold move paid off. During a time when filmmaking was switching from 35mm to digital, Ramo was right on site helping young directors and producers as they sold their $200,000 movies to the open market for seven figures.
“I was literally the girl on the Universal backlot who could do your production legal for basically no cost because I was excited to sign a client,” Ramo told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View. “It was sort of a perfect storm of geographically being in the right place.

Oscar Isaac is seeking redemption — and revenge — in the first trailer for “The Card Counter,” a tense thriller written and directed by Paul Schrader.
The movie, co-starring Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan and Willem Dafoe, centers on an ex-military-interrogator-turned-gambler named William Tell, who is haunted by the decisions of his past. After a vulnerable young man (Sheridan) reaches out to seek retribution on a common enemy (a mustachioed Dafoe), Tell attempts to give guidance in the hopes that it will provide an opportunity at restitution.
“It doesn’t matter to me if you did something bad in your past,” Haddish’s character says to Isaac’s in the two-minute-long clip. But a brooding William Tell disagrees. “Nothing, nothing can justify what we did,” he asserts.
Isaac’s Tell is vague about his past actions, but he does share that he learned to count cards in his 10 years in prison. That presumably...

“It doesn’t matter to me if you did something bad in your past,” Haddish’s character says to Isaac’s in the two-minute-long clip. But a brooding William Tell disagrees. “Nothing, nothing can justify what we did,” he asserts.

Abeckaser stars with Jackie Cruz, Katie Cassidy, Harlow Jane, David James Elliott, Robert Davi, Jasper Polish, Greg Finley, James Madio, David James Elliott, Elya Baskin and Courtney Lopez in the ensemble, which wrapped production at the end of March after a shoot in Los Angeles. It will get a 10-city theatrical run along with VOD in September.

Abeckaser also produced with Wild7Films’ Kyle Stefanski and Mike Hermosa, and Above the Clouds’ Jeff Hoffman. Executive producers are Katie Cassidy, Ron Rofe, Isaac Gindi, Eddie Gindi and Gustavo Nascimento.
“I Love Us was such a passion project and a labor of love. I felt the movie deserved to be with a company that really believes and loves the movie like I do. Lisa Romanoff at Vision was the right person for this journey for myself as director along with producers Kyle Stefanski, Mike Hermosa and Jeff Hoffman. We are excited for people to see it.”

Entertainment lawyer Elsa Ramo founded Ramo Law PC on the Universal backlot. Today, her firm of 12 attorneys handles 100 films and 30 TV shows a year, with clients ranging from A24 to Netflix. As productions cautiously return — or assess if it’s safe to do so — Ramo’s work has taken on a fresh urgency. She spoke to IndieWire about how she’s been advising clients to assess their productions and what sort of changes the upcoming months might bring.
When producers come to you, how do you assess whether they should try to move forward or wait?
Look, it’s not my job to say “wait” or “go.” The question is, if they want to go, how can they make it work?
Sure, but you’re allowed to have an opinion on this, too.

As Hollywood looks to resume film and TV production in the coming months, one major roadblock continues to be whether insurance and bonding companies will cover the risks associated with potential Covid-related illnesses and pandemic-related shutdowns. While producers have long made financial allowances for shutdowns and reshoots in their overall budget, insurance coverage on this type of disruption is in flux in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Elsa Ramo, managing partner of Ramo Law, whose firm represents producers and content creators, estimated that overall insurance and bonding costs of a Covid-protected production could be at least 15-20% higher, while other insiders said that it’s far too soon to determine the potential cost of future coverage — if it’s even available at all. “Most insurance companies are going to be sure that if it’s a type of pandemic similar to this, whether by duration or whatever the next outbreak is,...

The state of Georgia is aiming to be among the first to restart its economy in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. But in the state’s sizable entertainment sector, nobody is raring to get back to work just yet.
It’s not even clear that Georgia is over the worst of Covid-19, and several insiders say that studios are unlikely to risk the health of their casts and crews by going back into production prematurely. As of April 20, there were 19,399 confirmed cases of the virus in the state, and the death toll stood at 775.

Tom Cruise expected to spend his summer in Italy, hanging onto the sides of planes, dodging bullets and engaging in elaborate car chases. The arrival of Covid-19 spoiled those plans, indefinitely postponing the shooting of “Mission: Impossible 7,” the latest installment of the globe-trotting espionage franchise.
With signs that the virus is starting to plateau, Cruise is hoping the big-budget action film, delayed since early March, will see cameras roll this June, insiders say. However, a tangle of legal issues and a lack of clarity on when sufficient medical testing will be made available has left the movie business in a sort of purgatory. Studio executives are desperate to get films back into production, but they’re also keenly aware that remains a pipe dream until a set of industry standards can be instituted to make sure that sets are free of the coronavirus. The Paramount Decrees have been the rules of the road for Hollywood since the golden age of movies, but the Justice Department’s decision to do away with directives that were hammered out decades before the rise of cable or streaming has barely registered within the entertainment industry.
That’s because they are widely seen as anachronisms — an attempt by the federal government to break up the stranglehold that studios once maintained on the business by preventing them from owning both the means of production and distribution. Under the regulations, a group of movie companies, which includes the aforementioned Paramount, as well as Universal, Warner Bros., Twentieth Century Fox, Sony and United Artists were barred from owning major theater circuits. But some of these companies, such as Sony, Paramount, and Warner Bros. still managed to make tentative steps into the exhibition space over the years, owning stakes in theater chains,...

Exclusive: Judy & Liza & Robert & Freddie & David & Sue & Me, the memoir written by Judy Garland’s manager and female power agent Stevie Phillips, is being adapted into a ‘Mad Men’-style television series.
Athena Pictures, the new banner set up by Andra Gordon and Sarena Khan, and American Entertainment Investors, which has backed feature films including Hotel Mumbai, are developing the project.
Stevie, written by Gordon, who worked on Tatiana Maslany-fronted feature The Other Half, will tell the story of Phillips’ rise from secretary to tour manager to agent to producer in a pre-MeToo era.
Having started as a secretary, working for McA’s Freddie Fields and David Begelman, under the glare of Lew Wasserman, she moved with the pair to Creative Management Associates, where she became Judy Garland’s “shadow”. Phillips went on to manage Garland’s daughter Liza Minnelli as well as Robert Redford, Paul Newman, Henry Fonda,...

For the first time in its 38-year history, the American Film Market is producing a conference about what was once considered taboo at the confab’s Loews Santa Monica digs: television. The Nov. 11 event will address how indie filmmakers can cash in on the tidal wave of new streaming services — Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Quibi, Peacock, AMC Theatres on Demand and more — and cable outlets investing billions of dollars to produce and acquire films.
Variety spoke with Anthony Bregman of Likely Story, which has a first-look production deal with Netflix; Brad Feinstein of Romulus Entertainment, a producer of Apple TV Plus’ first big feature, “The Banker”; attorney Elsa Ramo; and other industry vets to find out what streamers are looking for, how producers can get in the door and how this new paradigm is impacting indies.

Amid massive uncertainty for the future of movies, the American Film Market opens its 39th edition Wednesday at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel.
While the Southern California weather will certainly deliver sunshine, forecasts for the independent sector for both buyers and sellers are unpredictable, as factors such as the collapse of Donald Tang’s Global Road Entertainment; the retrenching of Megan Ellison’s Annapurna; questions surrounding traditional distribution through theaters as streaming services like Netflix and Amazon gain increasing traction; and other concerns impact the indie film biz.
Still, it’s not all doom and gloom, given that the domestic box office has rebounded smartly from 2017 with year-to-year grosses up 10%. More than 70 companies from 28 countries will be attending Afm for the first time as buyers — nine from China; four from both Italy and South Korea; three each from Canada, Germany, Spain, Taiwan and Vietnam; and two apiece from Hong Kong,...

Though their treatment has been less scrutinized than that of actors and writers in the #MeToo era, below-the-line crew members are particularly vulnerable to workplace abuse.
That was apparent when a representative from Iatse Local 600 — the Intl. Cinematographers Guild — visited the set of “Criminal Minds” Oct. 4, two days after Variety first reported on allegations of sexual harassment and retaliatory firings against director of photography Greg St. Johns. The union rep spoke to at least one camera operator and left business cards but, according to sources, fielded no formal complaint about workplace conditions. As one crew member told Variety, “We were all working or too scared to talk.”
While the crew members are protected by union representation and increasingly detailed policies about workplace behavior, the peculiar work arrangements that govern crew employment discourage them from reporting misconduct and limit their options for recourse.
