A lot of sci-fi films helped shape the genre into what it is today, but perhaps none of them are as underrated as the 1982 film "Tron." The original entry into a franchise that would come to span several decades was studded with soon-to-be stars like the incomparable Jeff Bridges, who would go on to earn an Academy Award.
Bridges stars in the action-adventure as Kevin Flynn, a video game developer who gets trapped inside his own software and has to interact with the programs inside his computer's main frame to escape. Digital technology was still emerging in the 1980s, and computers were relegated to those with a proclivity for science. All that is to say, the public wasn't ready for a movie filled with symbolic computer metaphors, and the film was not a success.
However, as computers began to rise in popularity, so too did "Tron." Early web users looked...

On July 9, 1982, Disney unveiled the sci-fi actioner Tron in theaters, where it would gross $33 million and, decades later, get a sequel in Tron: Legacy. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
It would be all too easy to describe the Disney Studios’ Tron as yet another special effects movie in a year that has seen special effects achieve unprecedented heights of sophistication and technical virtuosity. It is that, of course, and it probably relies more heavily on computer-generated animations than any other movie yet produced. Both the eye and the mind are continually boggled by a bombardment of images that quite literally defy description. Who could hope to describe the electronically produced transformations that take place at faster-than-lightning speeds in the complex circuitry of a computer? They must be seen to be believed and even then you’re not quite sure.
But young Steven Lisberger, who both wrote and directed Tron,...

Joseph Kosinski is flying high off the success of “Top Gun: Maverick,” which debuted to a record-breaking 160 million over the Memorial Day weekend frame. The sequel is the first bonafide box office success for the director, who started his feature directorial career with Disney’s “Tron: Legacy.” That sequel earned 400 million worldwide, but that sum wasn’t enough for Disney to allow Kosinski to pursue an intended sequel under the title “Tron: Ascension.”
In a new interview with Vulture, Kosinski confirmed he had storyboarded and written the entire third “Tron” movie when Disney pulled the plug on the project in 2015. As the filmmaker said, “I got so close. I really tried.” Kosinski’s idea for “Tron 3” was to invert the franchise’s core structure. Instead of human characters being sucked into a video game world, the video game world would bleed into the real world and the film would...

This The Twilight Zone review contains spoilers.
The Twilight Zone Season 2 Episode 2
From The Matrix to Vanilla Sky and several, several Philip K. Dick novels, the notion that our lives are a perpetual dream fueled by technology, is a science fiction staple. Usually, this distinction is fairly binary: There’s a real-world, and a dream world, and once you figure that out, your entire world view changes. But, in the second episode of the new Twilight Zone’s second season, it’s not about taking the red pill or the blue pill. Instead, in “Downtime,” there’s a third concept: What if our virtual avatars went on without us?
All great Twilight Zone episodes have a twist, and, arguably, the twist for “Downtime,” comes pretty quickly. Newly promoted hotel manager Michelle (Morena Baccarin) quickly learns that she is not actually Michelle, but instead, a virtual avatar created by a man...

Bruce Boxleitner has revealed that a third instalment in the Tron franchise is "a done deal". The actor, who plays the characters of Tron and Alan Bradley in the films, told reporters at a Disney D23 event that the follow-up to Tron Legacy is likely to be released in 2013. Boxleitner said: "Oh, it's already a done deal. It's already in the works, my friend. It takes a long time to make these things; we won't get to it until next year anyway." Break out the neon gaffer tape and fire up the light cycle, User – it looks like we’re heading back to the Grid.
After the box office success of 2010’s Tron Legacy (despite a lukewarm critical reception it went on to make $400 million worldwide) and an animated series entitled Tron Uprising on the horizon the idea of another movie in the franchise was always a distinct possibility, and now it seems as if we’ve got some confirmation on that front – and from Tron himself, no less.
Bruce Boxleitner, who played Encom employee Alan Bradley and the title character in both the 1982 original and its sequel, was asked at a signing at the recent D23 Expo if he’d be willing to reprise his roles if a third movie were to be produced. His answer?

After Disney hired screenwriter David Digilio (Eight Below) to write a sequel to Tron: Legacy in early June, it was assumed that the studio would make an official announcement about Tron 3 (working title) at this month's D23 Expo, but no such announcement was made. Disney hyped John Carter, The Avengers, Oz: The Great and Powerful and Pixar's upcoming slate of movies, but Tron 3 was completely off the radar. Well, not completely. Actor Bruce Boxleitner, who played Alan Bradley and the heroic program Tron in both the original movie and in Tron: Legacy, was in attendance at D23 and he revealed that Tron 3 is "already a done deal" and that it could be in theaters as early as 2013.

During Disney's D23 presentation, a fan caught up with Bruce Boxleitner, who played Alan Bradley/Tron in the original "Tron" film and in the recent sequel. The fan asked if Boxleitner will return for the third film, obviously trying to get the actor to confirm whether the third film is even being considered. "That's already a done deal," he said about returning for part 3. "It's already in the works." When asked if there is a planned release date, Boxleitner replied: "2013. It takes a long time to make these things, but they won't get to it until next year anyway."...

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the majority of people in the market for the Tron: Legacy Blu-ray set weren’t blown away in theaters by its story, but by the stunning visuals the film had to offer (especially when viewed in IMAX 3D). To a lesser extent, some feverishly believe the whole shebang, plot and all, was a magnificent followup to its predecessor, 80s sci-fi classic Tron. The good news for both of these camps is that the Blu-ray set, which includes Tron: The Original Classic and a satisfactory set of bonus features, is just the piece of eye candy worthy of any hi-def collector’s portfolio.
Storywise, Tron: Legacy is about par the course with the original. I’d describe as it as presenting a simple, easy to follow plot that posits some hazy computer mumbo-jumbo to make things seem more complicated than they are.

I’m not entirely sure the use of the word “Classic” on the cover is entirely justified here, since Tron‘s popularity must surely be classed more as a cult thing than something of the mainstream. Judged by “traditional” factors for critique, it doesn’t exactly shine; the tone extremely camp and a little too self-consciously wierd, the script is full of problems and the pace is all over the place, but it still conjours up a tangible nostalgia that is as much indicative of the magic of cinema as real quality is.
In conjunction with the Blu-ray release of Tron Legacy, the original “classic” is now also available to buy on blu-ray.
Although everyone should by now know the plot, there may be those of you out there who haven’t yet seen the original Tron, having only just discovered the sequel, so here goes anyway. Ex-encom employee Kevin Flynn...

The original Tron, which is also released on blu-ray this week (alone and also as part of a Tron double-pack alongside Legacy) was something of an oddity, far more visually impressive than it was involving for the audience. But somehow the characters gained as much of a cult following as that iconic aesthetic, and the idea of The Grid standing as an oddly prophetic insight into the future of Mmo’s and the invasion of gaming sub-cultures into mainstream cultures. And I have to say it holds an esteemed position in my own personal film collection.
Tron Legacy then, no matter how unexpected, was always going to represent an exciting prospect- especially since the advances in the technology of film-making have now caught up with the scope of the original film’s desired special effects, and what was once astounding and ground-breaking is now as possible as seamless motion capture and entirely CG characters.

We haven't yet embraced the 3D revolution here at CinemaSpy. Let's be honest, most of the movies released in the format don't benefit from it. Many were not filmed using 3D cameras so is it any wonder that they are underwhelming? Now Disney's Tron: Legacy has come to the Blu-ray market as the standard bearer for 3D entertainment in the home. In that respect, it steals a march on Avatar, which is only available on 3D Bd with a TV attached. But does Tron: Legacy do enough to sell us on 3D for small screens when we have yet to be convinced of the format's value on big ones?
Tron: Legacy is the sequel to the 1982 sci-fi semi-classic Tron. In the history of sci-fi cinema, Tron is hardly innovative in terms of its story. It stands out because it reflects a significant social development and it made ground-breaking use of computer graphics.

The long-awaited sequel to 1982's "Tron" makes the original movie's innovative technology look old-school Atari by comparison -- a good thing for fans of sleek, modern upgrades.
In "Tron: Legacy," on DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3-D today, Jeff Bridges returns as Kevin Flynn, the genius software engineer and CEO of Encom International, who we learn disappeared in 1989. Twenty years later, Flynn's son, Sam (Garrett Hedlund), is Encom's controlling shareholder but takes little interest in his dad's business until Encom executive Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner) urges Sam to investigate a page from his father's old arcade. It is there that Sam is transported to the Grid—a virtual world inside the computer—and the 3-D neon fun begins.
The Grid has changed a lot since the original "Tron" -- it is now an inky-black, minimalistic wonderland of glass illuminated by neon lights and punctuated by the electronic grooves of Daft Punk...

With the DVD of “Tron: Legacy” hitting shelves next week (April 5), fans are in for a load of new material – but that’s not all they have to look forward to.
Next year, "Tron" lovers can tune in to Disney Xd and see the next chapter in the epic sci-fi franchise when the animated series “Tron: Uprising” makes its debut. The 10-part series is set between the time of the first film and last December’s “Tron: Legacy,” showing the titular Tron training a new program to take up his cause. For actor Bruce Boxleitner, it’s a long-overdue chance to fill in this missing chapter for the franchise and his character.

The big question on fans minds lately is whehter or not there will be a Tron 3. According to Bruce Boxleitner, there will be! The actor talked with MTV recently while doing press for the upcoming Tron: Legacy Blu-ray release. Here is what he had to say:
“I think 'Tron: Legacy' left it open-ended. You see two beautiful people riding off into the sunrise, and Quora seeing sunrise for the first time. That leaves it open to imagination and speculation."
"We also saw Cillian Murphy and the boardroom at Encom when Sam pulled the stunt in the beginning," he continued. "All these things have been left hanging out there.”
Boxleitner has played two character in the Tron franchise, Alan Bradley and Tron. Technically, he played three if you count the brainwashed Rinzler from Tron: Legacy who is revealed to be Tron himself. Someone else did all of the action sequences on screen,...

Someone had to go first.
As computers were getting faster and significantly more sophisticated, some producer was going to be the first to have computers handle the special effects in a movie. As it turns out, Walt Disney, which pioneered feature-length animation, took the plunge in 1982 with Tron. The film, starring Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, and David Warner, was visually stunning in its day as you felt immersed in the emerging video game world. The mediocre story took a backseat to the imaginative light cycle races and glowing disc battles. Audiences were intrigued, just enough to rake in $33 million at the box office for a $17 million production so it almost made money using the math of the time.
Flashfoward 28 years and as computers have taken control over special effects in all media, the time struck many as right to go back and revisit the world of Tron. Disney moved cautiously,...

In the run-up to the release of Tron and Tron: Legacy on DVD and Blu-ray, we look at just how ahead of its time Steven Lisberger’s 1982 Tron actually was…
It’s hard to imagine, now we’re all living in the future with our smart phones and wi-fi connections, that the 1982 film Tron was once on the cutting edge of what was possible in filmmaking. The technical accomplishments of what director Steven Lisberger, along with his team of computer programmers and artists achieved in Tron is well documented, and something we touched upon in our retrospective a few weeks ago.
What is less often appreciated about Tron, however, is just how much of what we now take for granted in computing was anticipated by Lisberger’s film. It would be wrong to describe Tron as prophetic, but through his understanding of what computing could bring to society, Lisberger succeeded...

What is less often appreciated about Tron, however, is just how much of what we now take for granted in computing was anticipated by Lisberger’s film. It would be wrong to describe Tron as prophetic, but through his understanding of what computing could bring to society, Lisberger succeeded...

Over the weekend a short film cut from unused material from Joe Kosinski’s Tron: Legacy was put out online. The short is to be included on the forthcoming DVD and Blu-ray release of Disney’s blockbuster but since it’s online, watch it below.
The Next Day is an attempt to bridge the twenty-eight year gap between Steven Lisberger’s original and the digital spectacular dreamed up by Kosinski and his team. Below is a look at the Us cover for the film’s home entertainment release and the UK version which sees an edition twinned with the original for double fun!
Whether or not we get a third film in the Tron series remains to be seen. Next summer we’ll be getting the animated series, Tron: Uprising, check out the trailer right here.

With a current gross of nearly $400 million at the worldwide box office, "Tron: Legacy" can still only be considered a middling success. That's not great news for rabid "Tron" fans, who wait patiently for any news related to a potential (and no longer surefire) sequel.
Disney is looking out for those folks feeling the cold turkey effects of a world without Tron viral promotion by releasing "Tron: The Next Day" (found via SlashFilm), a short film that bridges the original 1982 "Tron" with the 2010 sequel, out onto The Grid.
The 10-minute movie assembles most of the viral campaign and events that fans followed for the two years prior to "Tron: Legacy"'s release into a mashed up faux-documentary chronicling the mischievous resistance group known as "Flynn Lives."
"Next Day" hones in on the gang's ringleader Zack Attack (a Banksy look-alike in the midst of destroying the "Flynn Lives" homebase), while incorporating...

Clu will not be happy. A 10-minute high-definition video extra from the upcoming “Tron: Legacy” Blu-ray has been leaked on to the Internet. The video presents the origins of the Flynn Lives organization and who was in charge of it. It also explains what happens after Sam decides to take over Encom at the end of “Tron: Legacy.” This is the first of two “Tron 3” teaser videos. The following video is titled, “Tron: The Next Day – Flynn Lives.” The video also features Dan Shor as Ram and Bruce Boxleitner as Alan Bradley. The second “Tron 3” teaser video is reported to be a hidden Easter Egg in the Blu-Ray, which will feature Olivia Wilde as Quorra and Cillian Murphy as Ed Dillinger Jr. “Tron: Legacy” grossed over $395 million worldwide and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. Ok, now this is the definition of Epic. Apparently one of the extras that will appear on the Blu-ray and DVD release of Tron: Legacy, this new short film, titled The Next Day, is the first of two TR3N teasers.
It explains the origins of the Flynn Lives campaign (which ran in the lead up to the release of Tron: Legacy) and who was in charge of it; plus it features the epic pairing of Dan Shor as Ram and Bruce Boxleitner as Alan Bradley! Tron: The Next Day also explains what happens after Sam Flynn takes over Encom at the end of the second Tron movie.
The second Tron 3 teaser is reportedly a hidden Easter Egg in the DVD/Blu-Ray and will reportedly feature Olivia Wilde as Quorra and Cillian Murphy as Ed Dillinger Jr., who is being touted as the villain of the forthcoming third movie.

The Tron: The Next Day video from the Tron: Legacy Blu-ray has been released. Bruce Boxleitner, Dan Shor, and Garret Hedlund star in Tron: The Next Day. The video details what happened after Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) disappeared in the 1980s, Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner) taking over Encom in his absence, and the beginning of the Flynn Lives movement. We are also shown what happened to Encom and shown the corporate environment after the events in Tron: Legacy. It’s very cool video but I can’t imagine that Walt Disney actually wants this video on the Internet as it serves as an inducement to purchase the film on Blu-ray when it is released. I doubt they know about this yet since its the weekend so I would watch it sooner rather than later before it is taken down. Tron: Legacy is directed by Joseph Kosinski and also stars Jeff Bridges,...

We've been hearing that the upcoming "Tron Legacy" Blu-ray will include a teaser trailer for "Tron 3." It turns out that the teaser is actually a 10-minute "epilogue," entitled "Tron: The Next Day." Even though "Tron Legacy" won't appear in stores until April 5th, the video has already made its way online. It explains the origins of the Flynn Lives organization and what happens with Sam at the end of "Legacy." And it even includes a scene with Ram (Dan Shor) and Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner). Check everything out below. Unless something changed, there should be two other videos on the "Tron Legacy" Blu-ray. The first features Quorra (Olivia Wilde) arriving at the Encom building on Sam's Ducati, telling the press that she has spoken to Kevin Flynn yesterday. The third is an interaction between Edward Dillinger (played by David Warner in original "Tron") and his son (played by Cillian Murphy...

Thought I was through writing about Tron Legacy? Well, just about. After weeks of speculation by fans as well, as cover art that leaked a tad early, Disney has officially announced the blu-ray and DVD editions for the long awaited sequel to 1982's Tron. Eight weeks after its December 17 opening, specs have been released for the film's April 5th bow on home video another eight weeks later. Despite mixed reviews for director Joseph Kosinski's debut feature, Tron Legacy has earned $169 million to date domestically and another $212 million overseas, bringing it's box office total to $381 million worldwide. With a budget estimated to be in the neighborhood of $170 million, that doesn't sound like much of a success...to some.Truth be told, Tron Legacy did quite well in merchandising, with a toy line that sold out over the holidays as well as a well received soundtrack album featuring Daft Punk's acclaimed musical score.

Anyone who is fan of the original Tron movie must remember Yori. Played by Cindy Morgan, she was computer programmer Lora Baines alter ego in the Grid. In the "real" world Baines was Alan Bradley's(Bruce Boxleitner) girlfriend, and in the Grid a companion of His alter ego Tron. Being quite a popular character amongst the film's cult fanbase there was apparently major disappointment that Morgan didn't reprise her role in the recent Tron: Legacy, with internet campaigns being set up left, right and center. Well, fans may get their wish for the upcoming threequel. I have it on good authority that Disney have "reached out" to Morgan to return as Yori/Lora for their upcoming follow up to Tron: Legacy. All we know is there's been some contact with Disney, and there's suggestions that she may be asked to return. So nothing official here for now, but don't...

Thanks to the ideas and direction of Joe Kosinski Legacy wasn’t just a sequel to the 1982 Jeff Bridges cult classic, but a relaunch of Tron as a key Disney franchise.
If you recall, Tron: Legacy got its start as an early concept video which lucky fans were first viewers at San Diego Comic-Con three years ago. It was a boost for events that brought us where we are today. While this teaser footage goes to show some cool and exciting ideas for how to continue the franchise and link it together with the original movie, it’s not officially announced that third installment will start shooting.
The first scene presents Alan Bradley/Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) and Ram (played by Dan Shor in original “Tron”). Ram has been running the Flynn Lives campaign and is destroying all files associated with it when Alan tackled him. Ram asks Alan: “Why did...

“Tron: Legacy” was the #1 movie at the box office this weekend, earning over $44 million. When the original movie was released 28 years ago, it was unlike anything we’d ever seen in theaters before, and the sequel certainly lived up to — and exceeded — that standard with its state-of-the-art 3D environments. Many people who saw the movie this weekend, whether they’d seen the original or not, seemed blown away by the look of the movie. Bruce Boxleitner, who reprised his role as Alan Bradley/Tron for the new movie, told Fox All Access.com that “Tron: Legacy” is one of the most unique looking movies ever, and that even when he read the script for the original film, he could envision what the Tron world would look like. He also compared the appeal of “Tron” to another movie he auditioned for: “Star Wars.” (Click on the audio player to hear Bruce...

Tron: Legacy almost operates as a litmus test for how much we will tolerate in our tent-pole filmmaking. Just how much bad dialogue, poor acting, inexplicable plotting, and emotionally-vapid characterizations will we accept as long as we’ve been convinced that the film is “cool”? How little actual content will we demand in exchange for $300 million light shows disguised as motion pictures? We casually accept seemingly intentional mediocrity in our franchise films, from The Flintstones to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, holding our nose but making these films into smash hits.
I am reminded of Patrick Stewart’s monologue towards the end of Star Trek: First Contact. “The line must be drawn here. This far, and no further.” If we as moviegoers accept this artless, soulless confection as a suitable example of big-budget filmmaking, then we deserve everything we get in the following years. The apparent absence of any attempt...

Chicago – Every great film is a delicate balance of a number of critical elements. Good films lack in one department while mediocre films have serious gaps that stick out like a red dress at a funeral. The overall mediocre “Tron: Legacy” is exceedingly fixated on its impressive visual effects while neglecting to focus on creating an evocative and humanized story.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Despite its big-budget use of special effects, you aren’t emotionally connected to its characters or plot. Following the ahead-of-its-time 1982 film “Tron” with Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner, Bridges reprises his roles in 2010’s “Tron: Legacy” with the duality of both Kevin Flynn and Clu. Boxleitner also returns as both Alan Bradley and Tron.
Perhaps surprisingly for some, “Tron: Legacy” is less about the actual character that is Tron and is much more focused on Jeff Bridges’ characters along with his son, Sam Flynn (played by Garrett Hedlund). And...

A wonderful, visual display of computer graphics and visual effects, “Tron Legacy,” is one of the most immersive films made in years with a plot that blows last year’s billion dollar baby [Avatar] out of the water. Thematically, this movie is about utopia versus an imperfect world, capitalism versus socialism, fathers and sons, and finding one’s self. Jeff Bridges has no problem rehashing Kevin Flynn, while Olivia Wilde is a doe-eyed surprise. Perhaps the one caveat in this digital world is the ambition to restore a young looking Bridges as Clu 2.0, while the hero of the film, Garrett Hedlund, was not as charismatic as he should have been. Daft Punk’s score sores with electronic sweetness with some slight help from Hans Zimmer’s composing genius. “Tron Legacy” is a movie for the users, not the programmed critics.
It’s no surprise that Tron Legacy is not a critic’s dream film.

27 years have passed since the summer of 1982 and the arrival of Tron. Much has been written about the film's most important historical point, that being the first true use of computer generated (CG) imagery for special effects. Today, CG has become commonplace in movies and even television shows. Tron's digital 1982 world may look as dated as an original Apple II computer does to an iPhone but its core idea -- a world existing inside the computer where beings lived and died fighting in gladiatorial video game arenas -- still has a strong attraction to a lot of us.

For quite some time now the hype machine has quickly been building to gargantuan levels for Tron Legacy, and now it’s firing on all cylinders as the movie hits the big screen. I haven’t seen the original Tron movie in its entirety in over 20 odd years. I’ve caught glimpses here and there and it looks quite dated. None the less, I resisted the urge to watch the DVD before heading off to Tron Legacy. Jeff Bridges plays Kevin Flynn who more or less upped sticks and left the family home and pitched his digital tent on the grid, in a virtual world which he created, or in other words, he disappeared. Garrett Hedlund (Troy, Friday Night Lights) plays his cool geek son, who is so cool that he has no interest in running his fathers company, Encom. Instead he plays a yearly prank on the board and...

Ever since the 2008 Comic-Con, the Fanboy Universe has been waiting with bated breath for the follow-up to Steve Lisberger’s Tron, a groundbreaking science-fiction adventure released by Disney 28 years ago. Considered the first shot fired in the digital cinema revolution, Tron has carved out a singular space in the genre. Now that the revolution Tron began has changed cinema, the time seems perfect to revisit the world of the film with an eye towards birthing a new franchise.
And that’s what Disney has done. The new film, entitled Tron: Legacy will doubtlessly reap a fortune from both the aging nerds who saw the first one and the new generation brought up on gaming. It is also poised to launch more films and become another blockbuster franchise.

Last week, I got to see the very first UK screening of Disney’s new tent pole movie, Tron: Legacy. The hype for the movie had been building over the past 12 months with various trailers and marketing telling us that this could be the coolest movie we see all year! Disney had arranged the first screening to be at the Waterloo IMAX which is a fantastic venue, and we were told that the print we were watching was the only IMAX print in the world. All impressive stuff but read on to find out if it deserves the title as the coolest film of 2010… and to find out if it’s any good!

On this week's very special Tron-themed episode of The Golden Briefcase, Tim and Jeremy are joined by our editor Alex Billington to conduct a Q&A with Tron himself - actor Bruce Boxleitner. As we all know, Tron Legacy (watch the trailer!) hits theaters on Friday, and Boxleitner returns after 28 years to play Alan Bradley again. Listen in as the guys go over the phenomenon that is Tron and hear a few of Bruce's stories of the making of the first and second movies. Due to a small technical glitch, this episode is simply just the talk with Boxleitner this time, but it's 56 minutes long and definitely worth listening to, so check it out below! The Golden Briefcase is also broadcast Live on Tuesday nights starting at 7:30Pm (Pst). You can listen in via our Ustream page or by visiting our own live page right here on Fs.
