K-pop stars NewJeans played a pair of sold-out shows at Japan’s Tokyo Dome this week, and on Thursday, the group welcomed Rina Sawayama onstage for a surprise appearance to perform one of that singer’s biggest hits.
During each gig, the members of NewJeans each deliver a short solo set, and during Hyein’s portion, she opted to sing Sawayama’s 2020 single “Bad Friend,” during which the Japan-born Sawayama herself came out to assist on her own track, Stereogum reports:

This crowd rushed to grab all the limited-release RichMilk Drips, Verdy x McDonald’s skate decks, and Clot Crocs they could. The law of scarcity rules the Complex land, and those with the signed Jeff Staple Panda Pigeon Dunks win.

Takumi Matsumoto is an actor and up-and-coming artist. Growing up, he loved musicals like “Peter Pan” and began acting at three. The early days of his career included commercials and eventually J-Dramas like “My Girl.” As he got older, his motivation grew, and he landed a supporting part in Takashi Murakami's “Jellyfish Eyes” and the role of John in the Japanese Broadway production of “Peter Pan.” Since then, Matsumoto has continued to work in theater, film, and television. Recently, he starred alongside Myuri in Yoko Higuchi's sci-fi drama short film “Synthetic Love.”
Recently, we spoke with Matsumoto about acting, the filming process in Japan, filmmaking relationships, and other topics.
What motivated you to pursue an acting career?
When I was three years old, I started acting. One of the reasons I studied acting was because when I watched the musical “Peter Pan,” I wanted to fly through the sky.

Under Childhood is a column on children’s cinema—movies about and for kids.Mamoru Hosoda’s Belle is an anime musical that reimagines the story of Beauty and the Beast as two teenagers whose paths cross on a virtual reality platform, where both appear as their respective online personas—one a pink-haired pop star with a stirring voice, the other a wolf-like monster covered in bruises. Surreptitious meetings between the two provide some respite from their somber physical reality. But a slew of online and offline threats circumvent the chance for a deeper bond to develop. The desire for a multidimensional friendship sets the film into motion. The release of Belle arrives in the middle of a rather historic moment in which many screen-mediated childhood experiences are not only more ubiquitous but also mandatory, even state-mandated. For many children, the pandemic has made being online a requirement for participation in public and private spheres,...

Kanye’s demands for the final cut on Jeen-yuhs makes its Sundance premiere all the more fascinating.
The three-part Netflix documentary directed by Clarence “Coodie” Simmons and Chike Ozah is raw, rambling and riveting in equal measure. The press screener – labeled ‘Work In Progress’ – features previously unseen footage from 21 years of the performing artist’s life. It’s far from an exhaustive biography, but it offers an intriguing insight into hip hop, fame, race, grief, mental health and perhaps most of all, friendship.
In Act 1: “Vision”, Coodie’s voiceover veers between interesting and intrusive as he narrates the process of making the documentary through the prism of his relationship with Kanye.
“He knew it would take a lot for him to earn people’s respect as a rapper,” he says, as we watch the young producer touting his wares at record companies. Coodie and Ozah keep the camera rolling during late-night recording sessions,...

Kanye West opened up about his late mother Donda West in a preview of the rapper’s appearance on David Letterman’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction.
West’s mother died in 2007 from complications after cosmetic surgery and never got to meet her four grandchildren, North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm.
“This would have been the funnest time of her life to have those kids running around that house, and being able to, like, go and buy them toys…” the rapper told Letterman.

In a preview of David Letterman’s interview with Kanye West, which begins streaming next Friday, May 31, the musician’s wife Kim Kardashian West, tweeted a clip of him sharing a touching memory of his mother, Donda, who died in 2007 after a surgical procedure.
While his wife looks on smiling, West answers Letterman’s question about the memory of his mother.
“This would have been the funnest time of her life,” he says, “to have those kids running around that house, and being able to buy them toys. I remember my mother bought me a bear that was multicolored, and I was very into [Japanese artist] Takashi Murakami at the time of [my] third album, ‘Graduation,’ so she bought it and said ‘That kinda feels like Murakami.’ And then I was sorta like ‘I don’t want that, it ain’t no Takashi Murakami bear.’ [Laughter] And then she passed a few weeks after...

Previously a guest of honor at Beyoncé’s Coachella last year, J Balvin claimed Coachella for himself on Saturday night, with a high-octane show at sundown.
While plenty of Latinx talent has graced the festival’s main stage since its inception two decades ago, the Coachella Stage has counted predominantly rock acts, like the Mars Volta, Café Tacvba, Kinky and Zoé as alumni; the shape-shifting Puerto Rican hip-hop duo Calle 13 became the first urbano act to play the stage in 2010. J Balvin not only brought urbano back to the main...

Billie Eilish is a 17 year-old homeschooled choir singer turned pop music prodigy. And she’s every bit as awesomely messed up as that pedigree implies: She’s the demon spawn of Lana Del Rey’s California dreams, who first compared a sweetheart’s gaze to napalm skies on her arresting 2016 single gone viral, “Ocean Eyes.” She later entertained fantasies of killing her friends on the guitar n’B song “Bellyache,” and warded off new ones throughout the rest of her 2017 Ep, Don’t Smile at Me.
Yet, the smirking candor...

“12on12,” a new episodic series hosted by nationally syndicated radio personality Elvis Duran, will be on hand for ComplexCon in Long Beach, Calif. this weekend. Among the artists participating in interviews conducted by Duran are Yg, Steve Aoki and Vince Staples, Executive Producer Steven Levine confirms.
The concept of the Cutting Edge Group’s “12on 12” centers around the musical DNA of an act, with Duran exploring the genesis of a musician’s evolution through the examination of twelve songs that mean the most to them. The show will create a musical road map with each song — from the first time an artist heard a song, their first concert, a song that inspired them or something that they sang with their parents — as Duran weaves a tale throughout the interview. Each show will also feature surprise guests, performances and interactions with each act – Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas, Sam Smith, Logic, Niall Horan...

Criterion adds Jellyfish Eyes to its collection, the directorial debut of prolific Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. Known for his multi-faceted platforms of painting, sculpture, and a continual blending of media meant to push the boundaries of what defines notions of art, his 2013 debut is a psychedelic children’s adventure conveying significant messages as concerns social media, the environment, and human interaction. Having had his work featured at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles during a 2007-2009 retrospective, it’s perhaps no surprise Murakami premiered his film at Lacma (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) in 2013, before it spread to other venues and ultimately a limited theatrical release in the Us in July, 2015. Named by Time magazine in 2008 as one of the one hundred most influential people (the only visual artist to make this particular round) perhaps explains the high expectations and underwhelming critical response to his first cinematic effort.
