"How can you universalize the experience of being American." Hulu has launched an official trailer for their documentary film Anthem, which will be streaming on Hulu at the end of this month. Just in time for the 4th of July, of course. Anthem is Onyx Collective's new doc – a musical journey across America to re-imagine our national anthem for today. It's executive produced by Ryan Coogler, and directed by Peter Nicks. The film is hosted by composer Kris Bowers and record producer Dahi. Other guest stars include Joy Harjo, Ruby Amanfu, Charity Bowden, and Cecilia Cassandra Peña-Govea (aka La Doña). The film follows these two musicians as they travel from city to city engaging in conversations about the national anthem, resulting in a "journey to remix the American Sound." The film recently premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival in NYC. This honestly doesn't exactly seem like the most exciting concept for a film,...

Spirits Rangers‘ little heroes will continue protecting California land — and now, water.
Netflix has renewed the history-making animated preschool series for a third season, which will expand on the season two finale’s water protectors storyline. Created by Karissa Valencia, Hollywood’s first California Native showrunner, Spirit Rangers debuted its first 10-episode run in 2020 before releasing a second season in May. Beyond its Native-led cast on and offscreen, the show also features TV’s first all-Indigenous writer’s room and more than 100 Native or Indigenous crew members from the U.S. and other parts of the globe.
The show follows Kodi, Summer and Eddy Skycedar, three Chumash and Cowlitz siblings who, after activating beaded necklaces, can portal and transform to a magical dimension. Once there, their “spirit” ranger forms — a grizzly bear cub, red-tailed hawk and a turtle — use elemental powers to protect their California National Park. The second season...

Just as colonists forcibly displaced Indigenous people centuries ago, Native Americans have also been long maligned by an American film industry in which ugly stereotypes have persisted. Even today, Native artists struggle to carve out mainstream spaces for expression. It is against that troublesome backdrop that filmmakers such as Sterlin Harjo operate, bent on taking control of the Native narrative and “normalizing” the variety within the experience, even if incrementally.
That’s certainly what he’s achieved in 2021, with both the successful first season of FX’s “Reservation Dogs” (already renewed for a second season) and freewheeling new film “Love and Fury.” The Oklahoma-based Harjo’s fifth feature film, it’s a globetrotting documentary that follows Native artists as they navigate their careers, finding camaraderie with Indigenous people everywhere.
“I think there is a humanizing that we as Native Americans have to do for non-Native people, as we’re trying...

"Remember the sky you were born under. Know each of the star's stories..." This is a must watch 3-minute visual poem short film from the Sun Valley Writers' Conference 2021. They commissioned a set of three visual poems for the event this year, and this is one - now online. Remember is based on the words of the first Native American US poet laureate Joy Harjo, a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation. It's directed by award-winning filmmaker Jessica Sanders. It's a really lovely, calming three minute visual experience and I highly recommend watching at the end of your day. Maybe every day. "Featured in the film is Navajo contemporary artist Tony Abeyta, and Navajo friends Owee Rae and her son Kier, and Crickett Tiger and Santiago Romero. Tapping into the theme of interconnectedness, Sanders also included three generations of her own family, whose origins are from China, Turkey, Spain, and Germany.

Bonnie Raitt and the Indigo Girls are among the many voices featured on “No More Pipeline Blues (On this Land Where We Belong),” out on Earth Day (April 22nd) via Rock the Cause Records.
The track supports the ongoing fight against Minnesota’s “Line 3” tar sands oil pipeline, which cuts through more than 200 bodies of water, including the Mississippi River. The resistance is heavily led by indigenous women, including activist Winona Laduke — who has spent the last eight years trying to prevent the construction of Line 3.

Images from Cold War spy satellite show dramatic ice loss in the last forty years.
"When the United States launched its Hexagon Kh-9 surveillance satellites in the 1970s, the hope was to collect crucial intelligence on Soviet activities as they surveyed over 877 million square miles of the Earth’s surface. But these eyes in the sky ended up capturing images of a different threat to the future of the planet: the accelerating loss of ice on the Himalayas aka the world’s “third pole.” This phenomenon threatens the water supply of millions of people."
