When the White House Correspondents’ Association hosts its first dinner in two years on April 30, it’ll be matched by the return of another D.C. tradition: pre- and post- event receptions, dinners and brunches that have made for a weekend of socializing and schmoozing.
Among the night before parties: Funny or Die and People, which will co-sponsor a late-night fete at The Reach at the Kennedy Center. Both brands have new owners: Henry R. Munoz, III bought Funny or Die and Dotdash purchased People last year and it’s now led by now led by Leah Wyar and Liz Vaccariello. For both brands, this will be their first Whcd weekend event in several years. In 2006, People started an annual party with Time on the Friday evening before the dinner, and the event got to be known for its mix of Hollywood celebrities and White House figures, as well as a hefty swag bag.

Of all this season’s limited series based on high-profile incidents of chicanery, “The Dropout” stands out. More than Showtime’s Uber show, Apple’s WeWork show, or Netflix’s Anna Delvey show, Hulu’s look at the life and career of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes feels as though it has a certain point-of-view on its subject. And that subject – Holmes, as played by Amanda Seyfried, and the culture that made her – finds brilliant expression in the series’ music choices, overseen by music supervisor Maggie Phillips. Rarely in recent memory has a pop soundtrack been leveraged so effectively, and so eerily, to underscore points the show is making.
Consider, for instance, a scene in which a pre-fame Holmes is waiting outside the Apple Store on the day of the iPhone’s release. Holmes, who idolized Steve Jobs, is in a giddy reverie as Feist’s “1234” plays; the song will, for a certain subset of viewers,...

Fox has canceled its original plans to broadcast New Year’s Eve Toast & Roast 2022 live in New York’s Times Square citing the surge of the Covid-19 Omicron variant, Variety reports. The network announced on Tuesday that it will instead air replacement programming.
“While we are confident in the health and safety protocols for Fox’s New Year’s Eve Toast & Roast 2022, the recent velocity of the spread of Omicron cases has made it impossible to produce a live special in Times Square that meets our standards,” Fox Entertainment said in a statement.

Given the ways that the internet has fundamentally changed the music industry, creators must learn the rules of an ever-shifting landscape -- and ultimately seek to diversify their revenue streams -- to build sustainable careers.
In the latest episode of Tubefilter's investigative news show, Creator News, we take a look at these paradigm shifts through the lens of traditionally signed Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall (whose 2004 album Eye To The Telescope sold 5 million copies) as well as self-described "DIY artist" Raye Zaragoza, who owns her own record label.
In the past, given the expenses involved with breaking a new artist -- including production and promotional costs -- new artists signed contracts with labels that were severely skewed. Labels typically pocketed 80% of any ensuing profits garnered by artists, Tunstall explains, with artists themselves taking home the remaining 20%. Over time, this has created a festering sense of financial exploitation -- as evidenced...

“Suzi Q,” a documentary about Suzi Quatro, who preceded Joan Jett onto the scene in the early ’70s as a leather-clad rock pioneer, has been picked up for North America by Utopia. The company will give the rock doc a one-night theatrical release July 1, followed by digital and DVD distribution two days later.
A U.S. premiere has been set for the Sonoma International Film Festival on March 29, where Quatro will make an appearance. The film already opened last fall in the UK and Australia, two territories where Quatro, a Detroit native, had her biggest chart successes.
Besides interviewing Quatro herself, filmmakers Liam Firmager and Tait Brady also sought out contemporaries like Alice Cooper and female musicians who felt Quatro’s impact, including Deborah Harry, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie of the Runaways, Kathy Valentine of the Go-Go’s, Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads and Donita Sparks of L7.

Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall follows the forces that connect us all in the new video for her song, “Little Red Thread.”
Directed by Szop, the clip finds Tunstall performing the buzzy stomper in a red room while an array of people suddenly find themselves following trails created by a piece of red string wrapped around their fingers. The threads lead far and wide, for some ending at a scenic outlook, for others another human. By the end of the clip, Tunstall’s finger is also wrapped with a piece of string.

Suzi Quatro.
Four years in the making, producer Tait Brady and director Liam Firmager are in fine cut of their theatrical feature documentary on rock ‘n’ roll trailblazer Suzi Quatro.
Suzi Q charts the career of the Detroit-born, UK-based singer/songwriter/bassist/bandleader/actor Susan Kay Quatro, hailed as the first female rocker to break through into the mainstream.
“It’s quite personal, an essay on the price of fame,” Brady tells If. “We look at her marriage and divorce, her children and sibling rivalry.”
Film Victoria is an investor in the doc produced by Brady’s The Acme Film Company, which he will release later this year via Label Distribution.
The international sales agent Kew Media began pre-sales at the European Film Market in Berlin, with deals to be announced.

Julius Amedume’s neo-noir psychological thriller “Rattlesnakes,” rock documentary “Suzi Q” and the elevated horror thriller “Itsy Bitsy” are among the new titles that Kew Media Distribution will be introducing to buyers at Berlin’s European Film Market, which kicks off Thursday.
They join a slate that includes three buzz-worthy documentaries: Rodney Ascher’s “Glitch in the Matrix, Michael Jackson expose “Leaving Neverland,” one of the talking points at Sundance, and Nick Broomfield’s “Marianne & Leonard – Words of Love,” also a hot title in Park City.
Scripted and directed by Amedume, “Rattlesnakes” tells the story of California life guru and family man Robert McQueen. What begins as a typical day of therapy sessions with his clients takes a turn for the worse… He’s expecting to meet a regular client in a rented apartment, but instead he’s ambushed by three masked men and held hostage.

If you listen to KT Tunstall at all or have heard one or two of her songs hear and there then you already know she’s got a lot of talent and a nice voice that have carried her quite far throughout her career. She’s been a person of controversy and of note a time or two in her career but for the most part she seems to have kept herself on the straight and narrow and has enjoyed what she does when it comes to entertaining people and living for the music. There’s no doubt her songs have a bit

Singer-songwriter KT Tunstall released a lavish new single titled “The River” on Thursday. The track will appear on Wax, her sixth LP, which is due out October 5.
“The River” opens in a place of frustration. “I’m holding on to something I don’t want to hold on to,” Tunstall sings. Sometimes a chorus serves as a source of hope, but this one offers little in the way of uplift. “I want to jump into the river, feel it on my skin,” Tunstall sings. “But the river is rocks and I’m already lost.
