Prior to the pandemic, British filmmaker Peter Chelsom shot an Italian-language movie titled “Security” based on the novel of the same name by U.S. author Stephen Amidon. The film, set in the posh Tuscan seaside town of Forte Dei Marmi, wrapped just before lockdown. It stars Italian A-lister Marco D’Amore as a cop looking into a web of sexual abuse cases. The entirely Italian cast also comprises Maya Sansa, Fabrizio Bentivoglio, Valeria Bilello, Silvio Muccino and Tommaso Ragno. The cinematographer, Mauro Fiore (“Avatar”), is Italian-born. Chelsom spoke exclusively to Variety about “Security,” which is co-produced by Indiana Production and Vision Distribution and being sold as a market premiere at the Cannes virtual Marché du Film by Vision Distribution’s new world sales arm.
This is the second novel by Amidon set in the U.S. and transposed to Italy, after “Human Capital,” which was directed by Paolo Virzì. Other similarities?...

It’s Easier for a Camel…: Meyers and Moverman Craft Serviceable, Familiar Remake
Although it pulls no punches in its re-working of Paolo Virzi’s 2013 title Human Capital, this English language rehash from director Marc Meyers finds itself in safe, capable hands with screenwriter Oren Moverman on board. For those unfamiliar with the original, an adaptation of the Stephen Amidon novel, it may seem there’s a certain level of proficiency and ingenuity here in this sometimes-vicious class conflict melodrama. However, Meyers version tends to pale in comparison to its original despite a high-profile cast, and the narrative’s non-linear puzzle pieces leading up to one detrimental moment doesn’t play as effortlessly this time around, if perhaps due to the tug and pull afforded some of the more noted cast members.…...

A lot is happening in Human Capital, a new film directed by Marc Meyers.
Initially an Italian film by Paolo Virzi loosely based on the 2004 novel from Stephen Amidon, Human Capital centers on two families brought together by the fleeting relationship between their teenagers.
Liev Schrieber plays Drew, a struggling real estate agent, husband, and father whose brief history suggests he has delusions of grandeur and get-rich-quick schemes.
Depending on the market, real estate can be that, but Drew chose real estate because his father instilled in him to do something society deems necessary for his life's work.
Drew chose real estate over coffins, he jokes.
But Drew has a secret that comes to light when he drives his daughter, Shannon (Maya Hawke) to visit her boyfriend, Jamie (Fred Hechinger), the son of a well-to-do hedge fund manager, Quint, and his wife, Carrie, played by Peter Sarsgaard and Marisa Tomei.

There’s a structural choice at the center of Human Capital that either sabotages a good movie or elevates a bad one to the level of just being a mixed bag. I can’t quite decide which it is. Early on, there’s some interesting potential here, before giving way to a lot of mediocrity, before hinting at something better towards the end. Again, it’s that choice of structure, which we’ll get into below, that makes for at least some degree of a disconnect. At the end of the day, a really interesting cast can only do so much here. Hitting VOD tomorrow, it can’t quite get over the hump. The film is an ensemble drama, or really a melodrama, about a number of bad choices over a short frame of time. Two very different families are brought together when Shannon (Maya Hawke) dates Jamie (Fred Hechinger...

Based upon Stephen Amidon’s homonymous novel, the British director’s latest film, by Vision Distribution and Indiana Production, will be shot in Forte dei Marmi. Following the roaring success of The Immortal, directed by and starring Marco D’Amore (and earning €6 million at the box office), the filmmaker is stepping in front of the cameras once again, this time under the aegis of Peter Chelsom. The British director, who has authored works such as Serendipity, Shall We Dance? and Hannah Montana: The Movie, is now in Italy shooting his new film Security, a thriller based upon the homonymous novel by American writer Stephen Amidon. Produced by Vision Distribution and Indiana Production, the film was written by the director himself alongside Tinker Lindsay. According to the synopsis of the book, which was published in Italy by Mondadori, the...

Alex Wolff said his role in the film “Human Capital” was one of the “most challenging” part of his career, but he literally put his blood, sweat and tears into his performance.
In speaking with TheWrap’s Steve Pond following the premiere of “Human Capital” at Toronto, Wolff described filming an intense scene with co-star Maya Hawke in which he smashed his forehead and accidentally got a big gash in his eyebrow, which he had recently pierced for the role.
“There was a moment where I was staring at Maya looking, and it went from her doing the scene to her genuinely looking at my eyes like something was wrong,” Wolff said. “And then I realized, ‘Am I sweating a lot? Oh, that’s blood dripping down my eye in the middle of me screaming at her.'”

“Human Capital” has returned home in a sense, in that American novelist Stephen Amidon’s 2004 book was made into a very well-received Italian film by Paolo Virzi in 2013, and now Marc Meyers’ U.S. feature is based on both prior incarnations. There’s no reason it shouldn’t work again in what is, after all, its original setting. Yet as with the recent stateside do-overs of “After the Wedding” and “Gloria,” this is another remake probably best enjoyed by those unfamiliar with its predecessor, which remains more incisive and memorable. This “Capital” succeeds as a well-acted crisscrosser of a melodrama between two awkwardly entangled families in upstate New York. Where it falls well short is in attaining the level of biting social commentary Virzi drew from the same material.

Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland play lovable oldsters on a road trip, with soppy, insufferable results
Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland take to the road in this soppy bittersweet heart-sinker – depressing in various intentional and unintentional ways. Lovably impulsive oldsters Ella and John infuriate their uptight children (played by Christian McKay and Janel Moloney) by heading off in their cranky old Winnebago for a last road trip in the sunset of their lives, despite their frailties. They are cheerful, gutsy, secretly scared of the future and by imminent revelations about their shared past.
It is an Italian production, directed by Paolo Virzì and co-written by Stephen Amidon, adapting the novel by Michael Zadoorian.

Chicago – Helen Mirren keeps establishing herself as an international treasure with each new role. She is the prime motivator in the new film “The Leisure Seeker,” about a retired couple taking one last spin in their Rv, which takes its nickname from the title of the film. Along the way secrets are revealed and the devastation of dementia is exposed, but the story never gets too serious or heavy handed.

Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland can do anything – except, perhaps, save this sentimental drool bucket of senior cinema. It's not their fault: The Leisure Seeker is a road movie that lets its formidable stars down by shamelessly pandering and following a predictable path to been-there-seen-that.
In his first English-language feature, Italian director Paolo Virzì (Human Capital) shows he has his heart in the right place – it's just his knack for pacing, surprise and blunt truth that's M.I.A. here. Receiving its North American premiere last spring at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival, where it snagged a Best Actress award for Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi, Paolo Virzi’s Human Capital was Italy’s submission for this year’s Best Foreign Language contender. Ultimately it wasn’t selected for a nomination, even though its considerable critical acclaim made it a wise choice (in 2014, Paolo Sorrentino’s sublime The Great Beauty took home the award, but Virzi beat out Sorrentino for Best Film on home turf), as Virzi’s familial drama is an expertly paced dramatic thriller crafted around what could easily been a generic narrative. Meanwhile, the momentum behind the film has instigated a reunion of Virzi with Bruni-Tedeschi for his next feature, even if its box office success wasn’t replicated after it reached Us theaters. A well-paced and engaging thriller, Virzi’s film is a triptych of perspective-based characterizations coalescing into an...

For What It’s Worth: Virzi’s Leftist Neo-Noir a Capitalistic Parable
Receiving its North American premiere last spring at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival, where it snagged a Best Actress award for Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi, Paolo Virzi’s Human Capital is Italy’s submission for this year’s Best Foreign Language contender. They’ve chosen wisely once again (last year Paolo Sorrentino’s sublime The Great Beauty took home the award, but Virzi beat out Sorrentino for Best Film on home turf), as Virzi’s familial drama is an expertly paced dramatic thriller crafted around what could easily been a generic narrative. A triptych of perspective based characterizations coalesce into an arresting finale engendering Verzi’s foreboding title.
Cleaning up after what appears to have been a large banquet, a member of the serving staff takes off into the cold Italian evening on his bicycle, shortly run off the road and into a ditch.

During the Tribeca Film Festival, I spoke with Human Capital (Il Capitale Umano) director Paolo Virzì and two of his stars, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi and Valeria Golino. Since then his film, which also stars Fabrizio Bentivoglio and Fabrizio Gifuni, has been selected as Italy's Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language Film, following in the footsteps of Paolo Sorrentino's Oscar win for The Great Beauty (La Grande Bellezza).
Valeria Golino as Roberta with Fabrizio Bentivoglio as Dino: "They are all fragile and at the same time they are funny."
This time we discussed what it feels like for him to represent his country and go up against filmmakers such as Dominik Graf, Pawel Pawlikowski, Bertrand Bonello, Ruben Östlund, Damián Szifron, Andrey Zvyagintsev, Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne. The Como connection to George Clooney, Giorgio Armani and...

“Human Capital” is a term used to assign a monetary value to an employee based on their knowledge, habits, personality, and creative and physical qualities. According to an insurance company, our lives have value, or in some cases very little.
Upon speaking with Paolo Virzi, the Italian director of his 12th and newest film Human Capital, he revealed he had calculated his own. Though he felt his value was awfully low given his age and his health, he’d agree that the real value of a human life is determined by the actions and behavior of humans that can only be considered priceless.
Human Capital is a three-part story surrounding a hit-and-run car accident as viewed by three different characters. It’s less Rashomon, more Amores Perros, capturing the dark edges, social commentary and young love embedded deep within the story. Following openings abroad, an American premiere in...

Italy hopes to repeat last year’s win in the Best Foreign-Language Film category with Paolo Virzi’s family thriller.
Italy has submitted Paolo Virzi’s Human Capital for consideration in the Best Foreign-Language Film category of the Academy Awards.
Italy holds the record for the most foreign-language Oscars, with 14 wins including the statuette for Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty earlier this year.
Human Capital centres on two families, irrevocably tied together after a cyclist is hit off the road by a jeep on the night before Christmas Eve. The film was based on the Us novel by Stephen Amidon, relocating from Connecticut to Northern Italy.
It won seven trophies at the David di Donatello awards, beating The Great Beauty for best film, and six Nastri d’Argento Awards.
Human Capital has also proved a box office hit in Italy
Italy’s Oscar shortlist also include Alice Rohrwacher’s The Wonders, Francesco Munzi’s Black...
