A lot of fans have been anxiously waiting for more films set in the world of the 2006 meta slasher Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (watch it Here) ever since that movie was release. The follow-up Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon still hasn’t managed to make it into production – but David J. Stieve, who wrote Behind the Mask with Scott Glosserman (and also wrote the Before the Mask script years ago) has made a short film called Wait for It, which is said to be set in the world of Leslie Vernon. That short film is now making the festival rounds and has been screened at a handful of festivals so far, with more festival screenings coming up this fall.

It’s time for a new episode of the Real Slashers video series, and with this one we’re looking back at a 2006 release that has built up a solid cult following, but still hasn’t drawn in as many fans as it deserves. The movie is Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (watch it Here), and you can find out all about it by watching the video embedded above!
Directed by Scott Glosserman from a screenplay he wrote with David J. Stieve, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon has the following synopsis: You know legendary maniacs Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and Freddy Krueger. Now meet Leslie Vernon, the next great psycho-slasher. Vernon, a good-natured killing machine, invites a documentary film crew to follow him as he reminisces with his murder mentor, evades his psychiatrist/nemesis, deconstructs Freudian symbolism, and meticulously plots his upcoming slaughter spree.

"Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon" has always been one of those horror films that seemed destined for a small but passionate fanbase. Both a love letter and a satire of the slasher subgenre, it has never quite broken into the mainstream, but the people that have watched it continue to sing its praises 17 years later. It's genuinely a really cool take on the mockumentary format and questions why audiences are so much more attached to killers than their victims. If the boom of the true-crime subgenre is anything to go by, perhaps these ideas are more important to discuss than ever before.
Thankfully, it sounds like we're about to return to the world where our favorite slashers like Michael, Freddy, and Jason are real. Bloody Disgusting exclusively revealed the first look at "Wait for It," a short film from "Behind the Mask" screenwriter David J. Stieve, which...

We follow her as she travels home after a night out with friends, always remaining wary of the inevitable return of her tormentor.

Happy Monday, everyone! Over the last few weeks of our Indie Horror Month celebration, we have had a pair of two-part video interviews from our Ihm: Revisited series queued up, but this week, we’re doing things a little differently, as we have a singular interview today featuring Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon’s co-writer and director Scott Glosserman. Then, we’ll be back on Wednesday and Friday for our next two-parter video featuring yet another beloved figurehead in independent horror.
During our discussion with Glosserman, he discussed how Behind the Mask initially came together and how he and co-writer David J. Stieve hoped to inject some life into the dormant slasher scene in the mid-2000s. Glosserman also chatted about how integral film veterans like Zelda Rubenstein and Angela Goethals as well as horror legend Robert Englund all were to the production of the film, and...

I don’t always have a reason to go back to older movies for review, but having just recently revisited this movie, I had to talk about it. Why? Well, because it’s phenomenal, but also because… well… not many people actually talk about it, and that’s a shame.
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is a 2006 film from director Scott Glosserman, and takes a different approach to the tried and tested and well trodden slasher genre. I recall seeing this flick back when it came out, and I loved it. Some 14 years later I was curious if it held up, and was over the moon that it did. It really did. The story follows a young documentary crew who follow Leslie Vernon,...

Having only just gotten into collecting Blu-rays within the last couple of years, I’ve become interested in the different ways some of these releases catch our attention as horror fans. Sometimes we get those movies that we’ve always loved and jump on immediately. Other times, we get the obscure films that might wind up being a hidden gem. And then there are those releases that remind us to revisit the movies we haven’t seen in years. Such was the case for me and the 2006 meta-slasher Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. I remember seeing the movie within a year or so of its release, enjoying it, but never really feeling the need for a rewatch until Scream Factory announced their Collector’s Edition.

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon fans (read our SXSW interview) know that co-writer/co-producer David J. Stieve was instrumental in creating one of the most smart and self-aware horror films of the 2000s. Now, Stieve is looking to tap into that same vein of horror for his next project, the short film Wait For It, and you can help bring his directorial debut to life via his newly launched crowdfunding campaign.
We have official details from Stieve on Wait For It below, and to learn more (and see behind-the-scenes photos from the set), visit the short film's official Indiegogo page. And if you haven't already, check out the Indiegogo campaign for Stieve's other project, the comic book series Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon.

While in Austin at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival, I had the opportunity to catch up with a variety of folks responsible for the modern cult classic Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, which celebrated its 10th anniversary with several screenings as part of the fest’s midnight lineup. Those on hand for the interview included co-writer/director Scott Glosserman, co-writer/producer David J. Stieve, star Nathan Baesel, and co-star Ben Pace.
As it turns out, when you get a group of filmmakers who also happen to be great friends together in one room for an interview, things can get a little nutty. That being said, we have some great highlights from Daily Dead’s in-depth chat with the gang behind one of the more boundary-pushing genre films of the last several decades, including the risk involved with making Behind the Mask, the legacy of Leslie Vernon, how they...

With little over a month to go until Austin plays host to SXSW 2017 for another year, organizers of the annual showcase have announced that James Franco’s drama The Disaster Artist has been added to the stacked lineup.
Based on Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell’s non-fiction book The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, Franco’s passion project is set to recount the infamous story behind The Room, Tommy Wiseau’s widely-derided pic that has since gone on to become something of a cult classic. No release date has been set, but we know that the feature will be written and directed by Franco, who stars as the eccentric Wiseau, and features a cast comprised of Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Josh Hutcherson, Ari Graynor, Jacki Weaver, and former Community star Alison Brie. Bryan Cranston and Zach Braff are among those set to cameo.

With the Creation La Weekend of Horrors in its second day, some Really interesting news came out of the Behind the Mask reunion panel just minutes ago, and being that we were on the scene, we've got all the latest gory details on Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon.
According to director/creator Scott Glosserman, they want to do a sequel, but it is far from a certainty. The script for it picks up right at the end of the first film. Same tone, same aesthetics. Together with Behind the Mask co-writer David J. Stieve, Glosserman has found a way to continue the story of Leslie (Nathan Baesel) and Taylor (Angela Goethals) that makes sense. They've already spoken with Robert Englund to reprise his Ahab role of Doc Halloran. The filmmakers even have locations waiting, and most of the cast is in place and nailed down, but there no financiers as pf uet.

IMDb, as well as Leslie Vernon's official Facebook page (yes, he has one) have announced the long-awaited sequel to 2006's Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, currently titled B4TM. No news on what it stands for. I had originally thought "Before the Mask", but the IMDb shows the cast including Angela Goethals and Ben Pace reprising their roles as Taylor and Doug, which makes a prequel somewhat unlikely in my opinion. Scott Glosserman returns as director and co-writer, with David J. Stieve writing the screenplay. Nathan Baesel will be returning as Vernon and genre fav Robert Englund will continue as Vernon's "Ahab", Doc Halloran.

The sequel to the horror mockumentary film about psycho slasher Leslie Vernon is in the works according to writer David J. Stieve. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon was an indie film which blended horror and comedy. The film was about a young man, Leslie Vernon, who's dream is to be the next great psycho horror slasher. He gives a documentary crew exclusive access to his life as he plans his reign of terror over the sleepy town of Glen Echo, all the while deconstructing the conventions and archetypes of the horror genre for them. The film was in limited release in theaters but was a huge success at festivals and with critics and since its DVD release has received a large following making it a new cult favorite. Icons of Fright recently caught up with David J. Stieve, one of the...

A couple of years ago, a new slasher entered the pantheon of masked killers in the excellent Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon, a neat twist on an oversaturated genre. An Icons of Fright interview with David J. Stieve, co-writer of Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon has revealed that there has recently been some renewed interest in, and therefore some hard work done on, a potential sequel. The first film was a fun, snappy mockumentary about a movie-style slasher letting slip some of the secrets of his trade that definitely deserves its ongoing long tail of DVD revenue. The big conceit was that in the movie’s world Jason Vorhees, Freddy Krueger, Michael Meyers and all those bad boys are real, and Vernon was looking to climb the ladder and become as well known. Mask director Scott Glosserman was developing home invasion busser Playing House at Paramount Vantage but that seems, sadly, to have gone away. His next project seems to be a documentary (an actual documentary, not a Mask style mock one) called Truth in Numbers: The Wikipedia Story,...

The Icons of Fright gang posted an interview today with David J. Stieve, co-scripter with director Scott Glosserman of the superior meta-slasher film Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon. The writer revealed that after much speculation, there is now enough interest (though he won’t say from who) to get him and Glosserman actively developing a sequel.
The first film, released by Anchor Bay, was structured as a documentary about the titular wannabe serial killer, who aspires to become a legendary slayer of teenagers like his heroes Michael, Freddy and Jason. “Scott and I are painfully aware of the sequel trap, of treading the same ground again with nothing more than a bigger budget,” Stieve tells the site. “That’s not what’s going to happen. Things didn’t go the way Leslie wanted them to, particularly in the reaction of the residents of Glen Echo. I can...

I wasn't quite as big a fan of Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (reviews here) as some of the folks in the Dread Central offices, but I'm still pretty stoked to hear that a sequel is possibly in the works.
The boys at Icons of Fright recently checked in with Behind the Mask scribe David J. Stieve, who indicated there has been "concrete interest in making a sequel soon" and added that "it's legitimate enough to get (director) Scott (Glosserman) and I working on the story and plotting it out."
While he couldn't get into specifics yet, Stieve did indicate that considering how the filmmakers had to adjust their own expectations "in the wake of how things unfolded after the release of the film," so, too, would the sequel's "parallels to real life continue."
In an encouraging acknowledgment of how often many sequels fail to live up to their source material,...
