In 1965, the BBC resisted the introduction of Soo to The Sooty Show, for fear of making it too sexual...
The antics of Sooty, Sweep and Soo have brought entertainment to many over the past few decades. Originally a show with just Sooty and Sweep, show creator Harry Corbett had the idea of introducing another character, Soo, to the show. Soo was to be the talking character, and he mooted the idea to the show’s producer, Trevor Hill, back in 1965.
The answer? A swift no from the high ups of the BBC, “on the grounds that sex would be creeping into the programme”.
Corbett would go to his local pub afterwards and bemoan the decision. A reporter overheard him, asked if he could run the story, and Corbett agreed. It was, after all, factual.
These revelations have all come about in a new documentary, Sooty Ungloved, that...

Children's TV favourites Sooty and Sweep are lined up to star in their own film.
The puppet duo are to feature alongside their friend Soo in the new adventure, currently being penned by puppeteer and rights owner Richard Cadell.
The Radio Times reports that the as-yet-untitled movie has the blessing of Matthew Corbett (son of Sooty's creator Harry Corbett), and will see the bear and dog attempting to rescue their panda pal from a ruthless and controlling entertainment manager.
"She has been kidnapped by an evil showbiz impresario who will pull every trick in the book to turn her into a global superstar," explained Cadell.
"The film will be peppered with spectacular locations, countless celebrity cameos and buckets of slapstick, without detracting from the charm of the nation's favourite teddy bear, Sooty and his dim-witted best friend Sweep."
The Sooty Show was previously decommissioned by ITV in 2005, but after...

Paul Daniels was reportedly taken to hospital after being hit with a pizza by Sooty the puppet. The bizarre accident occurred as the TV magician was filming a segment for ITV's The Sooty Show last month. According to The Sun, the scene saw the much-loved puppet throw a pizza at Daniels's head. However, the second take saw puppet operator Richard Cadell put too much force into the throw. A dazed Daniels received medical attention and was taken to A&E to be treated for suspected head injuries and a black eye. "Paul was such a good sport and so professional," a source told the paper. "He's insisted they use the scene where he got injured, not the first one. "Well, he did suffer for his art, so it would be a shame to waste it. And after all, it's (more)...
