For its upcoming 23rd season (and eighth season on ABC), “American Idol” had the unthinkable task of replacing superstar judge Katy Perry. Well, the long-running reality TV show ended up pulling from its own bank of successful winners, choosing Season 4 stand-out Carrie Underwood to sit in between Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie at the judges’ desk this year. See the first-look photos above and below.
Perry surprised fans when she announced her departure during an episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in February. She was an integral part of the show’s successful transition to ABC and earned an estimated $25 million per season. Perry’s last episode of “American Idol” aired on May 19, 2024, with her final performance being “What Makes a Woman” alongside third-place finalist Jack Blocker.

Nearly two decades have passed since Carrie Underwood released her debut album. Yet the veteran country singer seems as grounded now as she was early on. In fact, as she recently revealed, Underwood still drives the Ford Mustang she won as a contestant on the long-running singing competition series American Idol.

Underwood appeared in American Idol Season 4. During that batch of episodes, she ultimately emerged victorious, beating Bo Bice. However, many fans believe the world has seriously slept on these artists. Here’s a closer look at Bourg, Testone, and more underrated American Idol contestants.

Season 17 of “American Idol” ended on May 19. Will the new winner enjoy more success than the 2018 champion, Maddie Poppe? After all, she didn’t even get a chance to perform on this year’s finale despite releasing her first album, “Whirlwind,” just two days prior. What a contrast to the early days of the show, when the previous season’s winner was always showcased on the episode that unveiled the new winner of the franchise.

Sunday night on “American Idol’s” Top 5 performance episode, host Ryan Seacrest introduced Carrie Underwood as the “most successful” winner in the show’s history — sorry, Kelly Clarkson! Country superstar Underwood won “American Idol” Season 4 against rocker Bo Bice in 2005, and she’s kept busy over the past 13 years with her family life and winning seven Grammy Awards. Underwood served as a mentor this week to the Top 5 — Gabby Barrett, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Maddie Poppe, Cade Foehner and Michael J. Woodard — and also performed her new single “Cry Pretty” live, complete with glittery pink eye makeup in the shape of tears. Watch the official music video above.

39 years ago today, audiences were first taken to the galaxy far, far away that would deeply embed itself in popular culture and ignite the imaginations of sci-fi fans for generations to come. Star Wars opened in theaters on May 25, 1977, the Wednesday before Memorial Day that year. (Yep, next year we’ll be celebrating the 40th anniversary of Star Wars.) The film that would launch one of the biggest cultural phenomenons of all time started small, opening in fewer than 40 theaters. But when the movie started to break records in its small release, 20th Century Fox accelerated its release plans. Soon audiences across the world were captivated by the Millennium Falcon and binary sunsets and lightsaber duels. Six years to the day after the release of the first film, Return of the Jedi opened in theaters. The Empire Strikes Back had hit theaters in May 1980, when Star Wars was a summer and not a Christmas event.

Brace yourselves for one serious dose of nostalgia. It's been over a decade since American Idol debuted. With nearly 15 years of contestants in its history, the show introduced America to hundreds of music hopefuls—some of whom have been burned into our memories and our iTunes libraries forever. However, it seems those fond memories are a bit foggy these days. When many of the show's iconic contestants reunited on the Idol stage Thursday night for the series' finale, we couldn't help but rub our eyes and ask: Who is that? And if this show can produce one more bona fide radio/touring superstar, maybe the inevitable reboot will happen sooner than expected, no?

American Idol season 1 debuted about a week after The Wire season 1 did. Though my TV tastes over the years trended much more towards complicated scripted dramas like the latter, I spent a long time watching the former, and enjoying it in the moments when the series wasn't busy padding its run time with inanities (like the entire judging career of Randy Jackson) and simply let the contestants sing. Often, those performances were just overpraised photocopies of the original moments, but when an Idol singer put their own stamp on a familiar tune, or dug up an obscurity and made it sound like a hit, I couldn't begrudge the series its enormous popularity. Eventually, the show got too repetitive for me to stick with, especially as more and more scripted options rose up demanding my attention. The last time I watched an Idol season from start to finish was the 9th,...

It was one decade ago today that Carrie Underwood was named the winner of the fourth season of American Idol, and the 10-year anniversary prompted the country singer to get a little nostalgic on Instagram.
"So hard to believe it's been 10 years!" Underwood wrote in her post. "I'm forever grateful to American Idol for changing my life! #blessed."
The caption accompanied a sepia-toned photograph of Underwood on the American Idol stage taken shortly after she was announced as the winner.

I’ve been recapping American Idol since Carrie Underwood was a humble farm girl who may or may not have been able to afford Almay — let alone be the face of its national advertising campaign.
And throughout that time, the show’s judging panel has been my go-to source for mockery, outrage and befuddlement — as well as an assortment of all-important conspiracy theories.

It's here, "American Idol" fans. The live finale when we find out who is crowed the Season 12 winner, Candice Glover or Kree Harrison. Based on the comments last night on our recap of the performances, people seem to think Candice has this one in the bag.
However, there have been a lot of seasons when the better "singer" didn't win, so we think it could go either way. Really, the show can't go wrong with either lady. But we'll be here for the two-hour spectacular, which should feature some great performances along the way to finding out who is the next American Idol.
Join us for our live blog starting at 8 p.m. Et/Pt. All times Eastern.

Time for some "American Idol" results. Will the men keep getting cut? We won't know just yet, first we have to sit through a group sing to "Somebody to Love" by Queen, which is surprisingly good. Probably because there are so many talented women left.
Ford commercial, video recap of last night, Casey James, some other stuff. Then we reveal the judges' Top 3 -- Keith said Kree, Angie and Amber; Nicki says Angie, Amber and Kree; Randy says Amber, Kree and Angie; Mariah says Kree, Amber and Candice. So, that's not really that interesting.
Some real results -- Kree, Angie and Lazaro are in the Top 3. Oh. My. God. Are you kidding us with this?! Lazaro is soooooo much worse than everyone else in the competition. This not even funny anymore, he needs to go.
Carrie Underwood is there to perform and we'll make no bones about it -- we love her so much.

There've been complaints that last night's American Idol, themed around the hits and performances of past Idol winners, was old-fashioned and schmaltzy. Hey, morons: That's why I watchAmerican Idol. I want ancient, Wayne Newton-y performances from Mormon teenagers in pain. I want the new Rosemary Clooney to woo me in a collared denim dress that her great-grandmother weaved. I want singers who pick songs by Kenny Rogers or Alannah Myles to feel "naughty." Bring me the home-schooled!
I loved last night's episode, even when truly awful songs like Ruben Studdard's "Flying Without Wings" threatened to curbstomp us with hopelessness. For me, ranking the top 10 was a cinch -- though apparently I disagree with most of you about how interesting Angela Miller is. Guys, her emotions range from "happy" to "happy, but quiet sometimes." Come on.
One last note before I write another 200 words about Lazaro Arbos that amount to "Good try,...

I profess to be no expert in the field of Christmas variety specials, but I understand their cheesy, lovely, historical importance. At one point they were a platform for astounding collaborations, and you better believe the era of that kind of magic is deeply bygone. (Though I did see Carrie Underwood's holiday special a couple years ago, and I think she invited Bo Bice to sing with her? Anyway.)
Here are five moments from Christmas variety specials that I watch every year.
1. Paul Lynde wears a Santa suit and gives Donny Osmond purple socks.
The idea of shoehorning Paul Lynde into an anodyne Osmond Christmas special is pretty wicked. Lynde, if nothing else, was a sinister comic, and his very energy brings an air of knowing subversion to the proceedings. As a bastardly Santa in the Mormon fam's 1976 Christmas special, Lynde deals with bratty Marie and boisterous Donny, eventually...

Tonight’s American Idol season finale will feature either Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips as this year’s Idol winner. Although Sanchez’s powerhouse voice makes her an absolute shoo-in for the crown, Phillips’ laid back and amiable demeanor and good looks make him a dark horse favorite to win it all as well.
Carrie Underwood, winner of Idol’s fourth season, is now one of country’s biggest stars. But every great artists starts somewhere, and Underwood vividly recalls her experience during the Idol finale (she won over Bo Bice). (Click on the audio player to hear Carrie Underwood) Carrie Underwood

For the final salvo in what’s arguably been the deepest, most evenly matched field in American Idol history, Tuesday night’s Season 11 finale came up surprisingly light in the competitive fireworks department.
Maybe the Top 2 — Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips — were still heeding last week’s instructions from their fallen comrade Joshua Ledet: “No! More! Drama!” Or perhaps it was just the incongruousness of the matchup, which was akin to making a choice between a stunning courture evening gown and a perfectly battered old t-shirt. (“But what’s the occasion?” you might’ve asked.)

One thing was certain going into Thursday night’s American Idol results show: Next week’s final two was far from a foregone conclusion. Unlike in past years, when the final showdown was all but predetermined -- Adam Lambert vs. Kris Allen, Carrie Underwood vs. Bo Bice, Scotty McCreery vs. Lauren Alaina – next week’s Season 11 finale could have featured any combination of the top three. Such was the extraordinary talent exhibited by Joshua Ledet, Phillip Phillips, and Jessica Sanchez. However, somebody had to go home. Let’s be honest for a second: When life hurls a rock-hard, unripe lemon directly at your noggin, the last thing you feel like doing is getting out your citrus-squeezer and a carton of sugar and making lemonade. Thankfully, the female graduates of American Idol University have given us plenty of amazing tunes — and plenty of amazing lyrics — to offer comfort in times of unrelenting awfulness: “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” “How am I supposed to breathe with no air?” “There’s no use in crying. All my tears won’t drown my pain.” “Friday, I’ll be over you.

The British are coming on next week’s American Idol — at least in song. What would you like to hear the Idols sing?

Dubious claims dropped faster and more frequently during American Idol‘s Top 6 performance show than J.Lo’s legendary backside in her latest music video. Phillip Phillips kidded that the U.S. government is running tests to make Jessica Sanchez’s voice even more poweful. Skylar is a “thick-boned” girl, noted Hollie (who’s been in this country — and in front of the Idol judges — long enough that she really ought to know the term “thick-skinned.”) And Randy Jackson claimed to have invented the word “ginormous“ right there at the judges’ table. (I know I’ve been suggesting for years...
