ABC is starting to whittle down its comedy projects.
The Disney-owned network is not moving forward with two high-profile comedy pilots – Lucy Liu’s workplace comedy, which was formerly known as Kids Matter Now, and Work Wife.
The workplace comedy, which has also had the title Bossy, starred Lucy Liu and came from Better with You creator Shana Goldberg-Meehan, CBS Television Studios and 20th Century Fox TV.
The multi-camera comedy was ordered to pilot in March 2020 but the Covid pandemic meant that it wasn’t able to shoot until much later down the line.
Written and executive produced by Goldberg-Meehan and directed by Christine Gernon (Speechless), the show centered on a diva boss with no patience for working parents who adopts a baby and has a change of heart, casting her mother-of-three assistant as an unlikely mentor and upending the office dynamics.
Former Angie Tribeca star Hayes MacArthur was set as a lead opposite Liu.

A project that comes from a deep, personal place, for her directorial debut, actress Nadine Crocker turned the lens inwards for Continue and surrounded herself with the likes of Emily Deschanel, Shiloh Fernandez, Analeigh Tipton, Kat Foster, Annapurna Sriram and Dale Dickey. Production began in November of 2019 with the backing of Cassian Elwes and so if Sundance programmers are looking for a subject-related drama with punch, they might consider this could easily fall in a SXSW slot.

A short story about sex work in a future-looking world where people have robotic doubles of themselves, Doppelbanger sees George’s robotic sex worker breaks down on him during sex and he has to embarrassingly contact its owner, and double, Cecilia for help. Not the ideal situation to meet a woman you’d quite like a relationship with!
Surprisingly shot in black and white, this works for this style and makes Doppelbanger look like a futuristic old movie. The short scenes shot outside of the building are most impressive visually because of the use of black and white. Because of the story, I assume this is set in the future and the futuristic style home looks great. If the budget was low for this, the filmmakers have done a great job making the world it is set in look impressive and believable.

Movies are slowly starting to trickle back into theaters, emphasis on the word “slowly.” For the time being, audiences’ options are still better at home, as this week’s crop of new films includes outrageous new genre fare — such as “Becky,” from the directors of “Cooties,” which plays a bit like a hard-r version of “Home Alone” — and festival standouts such as Hong Sang-soo’s “Yourself and Yours.”
“The Invisible Man” star Elisabeth Moss elaborates on her ever-widening scope of tortured women in the wildly unconventional Shirley Jackson biopic, a movie which portrays the author of “The Lottery” as the kind of character one might discover in her mind-bending horror tales.
Here’s a complete rundown of the week’s new releases, with excerpts from reviews and links to where you can watch them. Find more movies and TV shows to stream here.

Contrary to her movie’s title, the protagonist in “Feral” hardly fits any indigent stereotype: She’s young, attractive, kempt, modishly dressed, in fact by all appearances rather closer to the cliché of the college-educated, gentrifying if still “quirky” Brooklyn hipster. No one would guess that Annapurna Sriram’s Yasmine is homeless, a deceiving appearance that’s one of the few things she has left to turn to her advantage.
This first narrative feature by cinematographer and documentarian Andrew Wonder is an intriguingly offbeat character sketch that falls somewhere short of a fully-rounded portrait. Nonetheless, his arresting subject matter and refined aesthetic make for a promising debut worthy of discerning viewers’ attention. After a year’s festival-circuit travel, it’s getting a VOD release on June 2.

The 2019 Sarasota Film Festival has just recently begun down in Florida, and already they have a noteworthy effort to put forth into the cinematic world. The work in question is Feral, an independent drama that offers up a lot of unique things that should keep you incredibly intrigued. Festivals without A-list films need to showcase art at its most cutting edge, and this is an example of that. It could be a bit too unusual for some, but the acting and filmmaking demand that attention be paid. A look at homelessness with no easy answers and no judgment, it’s oddly captivating and manages to put a lot on your plate in under 80 minutes. This movie is an indie drama about a girl on the streets, looking to survive as a blizzard slowly moves towards the city. Perhaps your average idea of a podcast is a public radio news program, with longform journalism uncovering a hidden area of everyday life. Maybe it’s an interview show, where hosts dig into the personal and professional lives of experts in any number of fields. Your favorite might even be a show where a handful of people talk about their favorite bits of pop culture — of which IndieWire has a few! — every week.
Beyond those podcasting subgenres is an emerging world of quality audio fiction, scripted programming that follows a carefully crafted story arc. Sometimes these shows are episodic, stretching over years’ worth of episodes. Others are less straightforward spins on a theatrical premise. ‘Evening at the Talk House’ Theater Review: Wallace Shawn Gets Serious, Matthew Broderick Stays Cool
Wallace Shawn writes one truly brilliant moment in his new play, “Evening at the Talk House,” which opened Thursday under the auspices of the New Group at the Pershing Square Signature Center in New York. Matthew Broderick plays a not very successful playwright who has turned himself into a very successful TV writer. Speaking to a server (Annapurna Sriram) at the Talk House, one of those musty theater-district hangouts that all but disappeared late in the last century, Broderick’s writer character reveals why he didn’t cast a failed actor (played by Shawn) 10 years ago in his last Broadway outing,...
