Over the course of four seasons, “Star Trek” animated series “Lower Decks” has seen its crew of lowly officers take on the worst jobs in all of Starfleet, the type of menial work that only those at the very bottom of the chain of command are asked to do. But in the show’s upcoming episode, the core four characters get an assignment that promises much nicer pleasures: a glorified bar crawl.
“Parth Ferengi’s Heart Place,” the sixth episode of “Lower Decks” ongoing fourth season, sees junior lieutenant’s Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Boimler (Jack Quaid), Rutherford (Eugene Cordero), and Tendi (Noël Wells) assigned to Starfleet’s “Travel Guide Duty.” In a clip exclusively shared with IndieWire from the episode, directed by Brandon Williams with a script by Cullen Crawford, their superior first officer Jack Ransom (voiced by Jerry O’Connell) explains that the job, one of Starfleet’s most coveted,...

Captain Janeway back.
Kate Mulgrew is set to reprise her iconic Star Trek: Voyager role in Nickelodeon’s forthcoming CG-animated spinpff Star Trek: Prodigy.
The news dropped Thursday via a virtual panel at New York Comic Con.

“When [exec producer] Alex Kurtzman called me over a year ago to propose this idea I have to tell you at first I was a little bit uncertain,” Mulgrew said during the Nycc panel.
“After all I have played her for seven years in four-and-a-half-inch heels. I have invested every scintilla of my being in that woman. And I thought, ‘An animated version of Janeway? I don’t know.’ But...

The South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference and Festivals has announced its 2020 Jury and Special Award winners for this year’s film festival, despite it having been cancelled due to the spread of the coronavirus earlier this month.
The SXSW Film Festival had several Special Awards juries set up, but after the cancellation, the organization expanded to the juried competitions.
“When we curated and announced our slate for the 2020 SXSW Film Festival, filled with an array of wonderful films we were excited to share with our unique audience, we had no idea of the unprecedented impact that Coronavirus would have on all our lives,” Janet Pierson, Director of Film, said. “Our hearts were broken for all the filmmakers who invested so much time and talent in their work, hoping for a transformative experience at our event. We’re honored to at least be able to present our juried and special awards.

As moderator Jerry O’Connell put it, Star Trek: Lower Decks is like the Downton Abbey of Star Trek. The CBS All Access animated comedy series takes a look at the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships. Executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin and show creator and executive producer Mike McMahan (Rick and Morty head writer) took the stage at Hall H to talk about the new series which McMahan said will have plenty of comedy, but will stay true to the Star Trek spirit.
The team introduced the voice cast of the series which included Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid, who joined them on the stage. Newsome will play Mariner, a no-nonsense ensign who gets the job done. She’s good at what she does, but doesn’t care. Quaid will be playing Boimler, the by-the-book ensign who constantly gets in his own way.

Jack Quaid has joined the voice cast of the upcoming animated series “Star Trek: Lower Decks” at CBS All Access, Variety has learned exclusively.
As previously announced, the series will focus on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships. Quaid will voice the character of Ensign Brad Boimler. Described as a total stickler, Boimler does everything by the book. While great at sci-fi stuff, he’s completely bound to the rules. He doesn’t know how to follow his gut, and if he wants to be a captain some day he’s going to have to learn how to improvise.
Quaid will next be seen in a leading role in the Amazon series “The Boys,” based on the comic book series of the same name. On the film side, he is known for his role in the “Hunger Games” franchise as well as movies like “Logan Lucky,...
