The entertainment industry can be brutal and punishing even during the best of times, let alone amid disruptive WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. But it’s even tougher for those with disabilities.
While there have been highly publicized donations to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation from superstars such as Dwayne Johnson, Oprah Winfrey and other A-listers to help their fellow union members through this challenging time, philanthropic organizations such as Inevitable Foundation, launched in 2021, have stepped up while keeping their focus on their mission, helping writers with disabilities.
“The higher up you get up in the industry, the less representation there is offscreen,” says Richie Siegel, the organization’s co-founder and president, noting that America’s largest minority group, the disabled, is the least visible. “We said if you really want to solve this problem, you have to start with the storytellers. You have to start with the writers.”

The WGA East’s second Showrunner Academy gets underway today, with the 31-member class taking part in a program designed to support television writer-producers, upper-level writers and new show creators in honing the skills necessary to become successful showrunners and TV industry leaders.
The Academy, which provides instruction from current showrunners and other industry professionals on a wide range of topics, is led by Diana Son and Frank Pugliese.
“Being a showrunner is so much more than being the creative voice of the show,” Son said in a statement. “It’s also managing a multimillion-dollar endeavor with over 100 employees. We’re bringing in accomplished and experienced showrunners who’re willing to share the breadth of their experience – the good, bad and the ugly – so new showrunners can have a head start on figuring out what kind of showrunner they’re going to be.

Samantha Bee has lined up her first post “Full Frontal” project: She and former CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien are creating a comedic docuseries about the crisis in women’s healthcare in the U.S., O’Brien confirmed to TheWrap on Monday.
Bee, whose TBS series was cancelled in June after seven seasons, devoted several segments to abortion rights on “Full Frontal.” O’Brien has produced and hosted CNN documentaries such as “Black in America,” which touched on the fact that Black women in America are three times more likely to die due to pregnancy complications than white women.
According to Deadline, which first reported the story, Bee’s Swimsuit Competition and O’Brien’s Sob Productions were already developing the series when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. In the far-reaching wake of the historic judicial decision, the two decided to also host. The still untitled series will be...

Where to Watch “Astronomy Club”: Netflix
Watching “Astronomy Club” is a little like getting a sketch comedy syllabus. In the best possible way, a group of eight comedians manages to tick the boxes of everything you might expect from the show. Over six Netflix episodes, they fill out a collection of original songs, impressions, fake trailers, celebrity cameos, and even an absurdist spin on a holiday treat.
What ends up making these episodes really work, though, is the “reality show” framework that these are all built around. Yes, everyone is playing themselves. But even getting to know the scripted versions of Shawtane Bowen, Jonathan Braylock, Ray Cordova, Caroline Martin, Jerah Milligan, Monique Moses, Keisha Zollar, and James III help make the sketches around them a little bit sharper. It’s a shortcut to knowing when everyone is playing against type or drafting off...

Ayo Edebiri still remembers the first joke she ever told. She was in eighth grade and had just joined the improv team at her school in Boston. She was an anxious, nerdy teen, fond of writing fan fiction about Jacob Black from Twilight eating hot dogs. Improv was not necessarily an obvious fit. Then she made a crack about why Christians’ favorite cheese was Swiss: “Because it’s holy,” she says, rolling her eyes. “For some reason, people thought that was really funny.” (For the record, this reporter laughed.)

It’s the time of Peak TV! There’s TV everywhere! You can’t shake a stick without hitting another TV show on another streamer! TV! TV! TV!
All that’s true — until it’s not.
The sheer quantity of TV does not always equate to quality TV winning out, and each year, there are a number of worthy shows that don’t reach whatever mystical threshold television executives have ascertained is required to keep a project in production. This is even more true this year, with the business pressures created by the pandemic often — and some cynics would argue, conveniently — cited as the reason for cancellation.
Here, IndieWire lists, in alphabetical order, the year’s shows that were canceled too soon. They’re gone — but not forgotten, thanks to the afterlife they could receive on those same streaming outlets that didn’t want to fund new episodes. As it turns out,...

BritBox’s reboot of British satirical puppet show Spitting Image has been renewed for a second season just days after it premiered the first episode of Season 1 online.
The Avalon-produced caricature comedy will be back in fall 2021 after BritBox said its first series premiere helped boost new subscribers ten-fold compared to its average daily sign-up rate.
Reemah Sakaan, group director of ITV SVOD and chief creative and brand officer of BritBox, said: “The fantastic response to Spitting Image just goes to show how much the world needs public service satire. Not only can subscribers look forward to another 9 weeks of anarchy but also now another series in 2021.”
The renewal comes just hours after executive producer Jon Thoday revealed that NBC backed out as Spitting Image’s U.S. broadcast partner just weeks before the premiere. The Avalon founder said there was “too much nervousness” about its satirical content among NBC executives.

There’s an “Astronomy Club” sketch called “Activist Rally,” where a passionate male organizer derails an entire meeting by regaling the group with his grand utopian visions. As far as sketch comedy goes, it’s the perfect example of the highly specific becoming easily recognizable — even to anyone who’s never attended an activist meeting. It’s also the kind of sketch that, at least on paper, wouldn’t necessarily read like it was written for an all-black cast. Such is the beauty and brilliance of “Astronomy Club,” the six-episode Netflix sketch series that debuted on the platform in December.
Unfortunately, Netflix announced publicly this week that it would not be renewing the show for a second season. That’s disappointing, not only because the show was funny and sharp and got great reviews, but if anyone deserves a little extra joy right now it’s black people.

“Astronomy Club” will not be coming back for a second season.
Netflix has decided to cancel the sketch comedy series after only a single season. The series featured the titular sketch and improv group and was produced by Kenya Barris via his Khalabo Ink Society banner at Netflix
News of the cancelation was announced in a somewhat ironic tweet from the official “Astronomy Club” Twitter account last night.
“Seems like a good time to mention ‘Astronomy Club’ was sadly not renewed by Netflix. Thank you to all the fans who watched! Hoping that more black artists & comedians are given the platform to have voices in the future,” the show’s read.

The premiere of “Astronomy Club” is so dense with fully-formed jokes, wry social commentaries, and wild left turns that you’d be forgiven for wondering if you accidentally dropped into the show’s second season rather than its first. There are sketches about a life or death hair emergency, the chain reaction of biases of people sizing each other up from either side of a locked apartment building door, and a harrowing disaster from the perspective of its gingerbread-men victims. There’s one about a support group for Magical Negroes who can’t let go of their need to help white people (think Bagger Vance), and another about Robin Hood getting a lesson in the intersection between class and race when he tries to rob a wealthy black family. Throughout, there’s a faux MTV-style reality show starring the Astronomy Club itself. This first episode sets the standard for “Astronomy Club” as clever,...

Following director Mary Harron’s recent “Anatomy of a Scene” video for the New York Times, one of the most famous sequences in “American Psycho” has a new look. Mara Wilson, late of “Matilda” and more recently a prominent voice on social media, stars in this female-led version of the business-card scene that birthed the famous line, “Oh my god, it even has a watermark.” (Warning: If the you consider the very notion of an all-female “Ghostbusters” a personal affront, this may not be the video for you.)
