When the first episode of “American Idol” aired in June 2002, few could have predicted that the reality singing competition show would transform the television landscape. Voting by text message for your favorite contestants (and watching them get played off by Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day”) became a national pastime for much of the early aughts. “Idol”s massive success gave way to shows like “The Voice,” “America’s Got Talent” and “The Masked Singer,” but none have managed to capture the dynamic of original judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell, anchored by longtime host Ryan Seacrest. The sovereignty of the Y2K pop diva, coupled with a tabloid-fueled culture and twice-weekly episode format set the stage for “Idol” to dominate water cooler conversation.
“Idol”s handle on the cultural zeitgeist (it was the highest-rated show on U.S. television for seven consecutive years) gave it the ability to launch winners into the national spotlight.

One of the most inexplicable snubs in the 2021 Grammy nominations was the complete absence of The Weeknd. Now the Billboard year-end charts are out, and they confirm him as one of the year’s biggest commercial artists of 2020. They also make the recording academy’s oversight look even weirder.
SEEMake your Grammy predictions in 32 categories: Who will win, who will upset, and who will make history?
Granted, the Grammys shouldn’t be primarily about commercial success, but it’s incredibly rare for such a big hit-maker to be completely shut out of the nominations. His dominant hit single “Blinding Lights” spent four weeks at number-one and set a new record as the longest-running top-10 hit in history, so it’s no surprise that it was Billboard’s number-one song of the year. That makes this is only the third time this century so far that Billboard’s number-one song of...

For the past eight seasons, American Idol has chosen what's called a "goodbye song." After a contestant is eliminated, they play a video of their journey on the show with that song playing in the background. It started in season 5 with Daniel Powter's "Bad Day," which became an instant hit around the country. Ever since then, they've kept it within the Idol family, as all the singers have been former contestants (mostly winners), and even the very first champion from the UK's Pop Idol.

Los Angeles — The smash hit "Bad Day" should have been a good thing for Daniel Powter: The upbeat tune put Powter on the musical map.
It not only became the biggest hit of his career, but it was also the No. 1 song of 2006. With assists from countless spins on the radio and use as the farewell song on "American Idol," it went on to sell more than three million copies in the United States alone.
But lightning didn't strike twice for the Powter. In fact, lightning didn't even come close again. Powter never returned to the pop charts and Billboard even named Powter the decade's top one-hit wonder.
Powter eventually became sick of performing his claim to fame.
"When the spotlight hit me, I was like, `I don't want to be in the spotlight,'" he said in a recent interview. "I hated it. I hated being on TV.

It’s exactly 35 days (I’m totally not keeping count or anything) until the final of the 57th Eurovision Song Contest in the city of Baku, Azerbaijan which also equates to 5 weeks because I can do maths me. So, to get in the Euro-mood each week i’ll introduce you to five of this year’s entries all linked together by a (extremely tenuous) link as a WhatCulture! Countdown to the big, shiny event.
First up, I know Eurovision has this stigma in the UK for being camp and indulgent where we can never win because of political block voting (i.e. everyone hates us but Ireland) and yes, most of that is correct, although us sending completely rubbish entries doesn’t really help either. The fact is sometimes, if you give it a chance, the songs in Eurovision are actually quite listenable without the rocket explosions and glitterball drag...

It frightens me to think about American Idol contestants and their "heroes." Can't you imagine a youngster like Joshua Ledet swooning over The Pussycat Dolls and claiming he's listened to them since he was three? "My momma would tuck me in and sing 'Stickwitu' until I fell asleep! That's why I understand Soul!" Can't you picture Skylar Laine raising a Playskool lighter to the sky and proclaiming her undying devotion to Lady Antebellum? Can't you picture Hollie Cavanagh gloating over her love of... Lady Antebellum? Look, I was really scared that Lady Antebellum was going to come up. But it didn't. Phew. Still, some of the contestants' actual choices weren't much better -- even if most performances this week were really-effing-great.
And speaking of effing: If I were on Idol, I'd have chosen "F*ck and Run" by Liz Phair for Hero Week, because 1) I am a cunning homosexual who...

Last year's "American Idol" winner, Scotty McCreery, will be returning to the show on a weekly basis, at least vocally. He's recorded Tim McGraw's "Please Remember Me" as the song that will play during the weekly eliminations.
"Every week, when the song would play and we'd have to watch the goodbye video, it was always a tough time," McCreery tells USA Today. "I never had to experience it, but I always felt it."
The elimination song was introduced in Season 5 with Daniel Powter's "Bad Day." Since then, it has always been one recorded by an "Idol" winner or finalist.
Season 6: "Home," Daughtry
Season 7: "Celebrate Me Home," Ruben Studdard
Season 8: "Home Sweet Home," Carrie Underwood
Season 9: "Leave Right Now," Will Young
Season 10: "Don't You (Forget About Me)," David Cook

Danger, American Idol contestants, danger! You’re about to enter “Songs from the 21st century” week, territory fraught with peril on all sides. The temptation: To sing major hit songs readily familiar to most of the viewing audience. The danger: That those songs are too readily familiar to most of the viewing audience and/or those songs are not exactly engineered as vocal showcases. That said, there are some recent hits our Idol Top 7 could hit out of the park if done right given the right guidance — i.e. our completely unsolicited advice. Two rules, though, as we dive into...

Call off the search dogs. Lower our security threat level back down to chartreuse. Our long national nightmare of not knowing the full Top 24 on "American Idol X" finally ended Thursday night (February 24), as Seacrest & Co. spent 14 hours reading 19 names. (Apparently "Idol" was just getting us in the mood for Sunday night's Oscar telecast.)
When the dust finally settled and the also-rans were told to mind the gap as they boarded the "Idol" Obscurity Train (Erin Kelly, Tiwan Strong, Brittany Mazur and Jimmie Allen, meet your conductors Vanessa Wolfe, Erskine Walcott and Hadas), "Idol" fans were left with a promising batch of 24 hungry young singers. And in an "AI" first, all 24 semi-finalists were profiled over the course of the two "big reveal" episodes. (Although, how could they not be in three hours of televison?!)

The future of "American Idol" was already up in the air with Simon Cowell's exit from the show before Ellen DeGeneres announced she wasn't coming back and rumors started circulating that Kara DioGuardi was also leaving the confines of the judges' table. In the past few months, we've spent a number of posts trying to figure out who would be the new version of Simon Cowell. But we realized that the search the producers of the show should be conducting is one for the new Paula Abdul.
Since her exit, the efforts of DeGeneres and DioGuardi have driven home the fact that the show really missed Abdul's approach to the show, which was equal parts poetic, positive, wacky, insightful and completely unhinged. And not only did Abdul give something to "Idol," but "Idol" also gave a lot to Abdul, resurrecting the former chart-topper's career and making her a player...

Allison Strong, Union City, N.J.Constant pouting, spastic crying spells, and the occasional desire to croon to “Bad Day” by Daniel Powter. If you're under 20 and suffering from these symptoms, you may be experiencing a midteen crisis: the heartbreaking realization that you've hit puberty and still aren't starring in your own Disney show. You may feel like you've been hit by a speeding double-decker bus, but you're really just moping on the couch surrounded by empty chocolate wrappers. I know this because I've been there. I had my first catastrophe at 14 years old: An agent came to my high school production of “Once on This Island” and requested an appointment with me. Hopeful that this was my big break into the industry, I walked into the agent's office, enthusiastically performed a song from “Wicked,” did my best reading of the sides provided, and didn't get signed. She explained that...

Young and talented B.o.B has claimed his fame even before releasing his debut album "B.o.B Presents The Adventures of Bobby Ray". His first single "Nothin' on You" which features Bruno Mars is currently sitting at No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100, beating Rihanna's "Rude Boy" and Train's "Hey, Soul Sister" among other hit singles.
According to Billboard, the track becomes the fastest chart-topping single for a male vocalist since Chris Brown, James Blunt, Ne-Yo and Daniel Powter stormed the list between November 2005 and April 2006. On top of that, B.o.B also has his "Airplanes" duet with Paramore's Hayley Williams landing at No. 12.
Following the success of those songs, B.o.B is going to release "Adventures of Bobby Ray" across the United States on April 27. Lupe Fiasco, T.I., Janelle Monae, Eminem and Weezer's Rivers Cuomo are lined up for featured guests.

The season's first "American Idol" eliminations are in the books, and now Tyler Grady, Janell Wheeler, Ashley Rodriguez and Joe Munoz will have to pursue their dreams of pop stardom on their own. All of the eliminations seemed to make sense (though Tim Urban was arguably worse than Grady) and each one was accompanied by an "Idol" tradition: The exit song.
This season, Will Young's "Leave Right Now" is the tune that will send fallen "Idol" contestants back to the real world. Considering the title and the fact that Young is a former "Pop Idol" winner in the U.K., it's a logical fit (even though it was big on the British charts all the way back in 2003). However, when played over the exit montages last night, it sounded simultaneously harsh and dour, especially considering the chorus: "I think I better leave right now/ Before I fall any deeper...

Canadian singer Daniel Powter has been voted the decade's one-hit wonder by Billboard magazine. The singer's track Bad Day stayed at the top of the Billboard chart for five weeks in 2006 and the song also did well across Europe. The magazine is describing a one-hit wonder as an act whose second single did not make it into the top 25. The vote included acts from 2000 to 2007 as some who released a song last year could just be taking a break this year. The track Terror Squad for Lean Back came in second place and Crazy Town with Butterfly came third. Mims was at number four with This Is Why I'm Hot...

Two of the top 10 one-hit wonders of the past decade come to you courtesy of "American Idol."
Only one of the two -- fourth-season runner-up Bo Bice -- was actually a contestant on "Idol." But the show was responsible for fueling the rise up the charts of the decade's biggest one-hit wonder -- "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter.
The song was played over the elimination montage for every finalist in "Idol's" fifth season, which led to "Bad Day" hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 2006. It would stay there for five weeks and became the year's top-selling single.
Since then, though, Powter has failed to crack the Hot 100 even once, which pretty much makes him the definition of a one-hit wonder.
Bice, meanwhile, reached No. 2 in 2005 with "Inside Your Heaven," the song written for that season's finale (winner Carrie Underwood went to No. 1 with it that same year). He...

Straight up now: I've known and liked Paula Abdul since way back last century when she was making MTV videos with animated co-stars like Mc Skat Kat and Keanu Reeves. The singer who graduated from the show's class of 2005, has re-recorded Motley Crue's "Home Sweet Home" which will be played each time one contestant leaves the show.

"I've always loved this song, and besides being fitting for 'Idol', to me, the title is also very fitting with animal rescue and finding animals their own homes," Carrie who is a known animal lover said in a statement. "The Insider" has learned that Carrie's remake of Mötley Crüe's "Home Sweet Home" will be the new farewell song played on the weekly results show after a contestant gets the bad news that he or she has been sent home. Other songs played during the contestants' farewell include Daniel Powter's "Bad Day," Ruben Studdard's rendition of "Celebrate Me Home," and Daughtry's "Home." Carrie's "Home Sweet Home" will debut on "Idol"'s elimination show this Wednesday. The song will be available for download through iTunes until March 16 and through retailers after that. A portion of the song's proceeds will go to The Humane Society of the United States, a cause close to Carrie's heart. You can catch "American Idol" Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. and Wednesday nights at 9 p.

Aside from his Evan Dando-tweaking breakthrough “I Wish I Was Him” way back in 1993, Ben Lee’s innocuously anemic pop has never been terribly interesting. But The Rebirth Of Venus, his seventh full-length, offers a more direct kind of terrible. Ruben Studdard is back on American Idol's radar.
The Season 2 winner will perform the "farewell song" used to play off contestants as they are eliminated from the top 12. This year, the song will be a cover of Kenny Loggins' "Celebrate Me Home", in a new version produced by Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam.
"It's very soulful, very heartfelt," Lewis said. "Ruben is singing his pants off".
As part of Idol's new sponsorship with iTunes this season, "Celebrate Me Home" will be made available digitally starting March 12, the day the first of the top 12 will be sung off. It's also expected to be included on one of the compilation albums annually released by American Idol, according to Iain Pirie, head of 19 Entertainment U.S.
Season 5's farewell song, Daniel Powter's "Bad Day", went on to sell 1.9 million copies and was the top digital download of 2006.
It's a significant gig for Studdard, who was dropped by J Records in December. He is, however, still managed by Idol's 19 Entertainment and under contract to subsidiary 19 Recordings, a link that paved the way for him to return to the show as the song's performer.
